Ok, I am about ready to get back into the shop, now that my bathroom project is coming close to the final stages! I was going to get this thing built and finished then do an @Achto style unveiling but this might need some input from the peanut gallery. I also enjoy the interaction from y’all while it’s coming together! So here’s where I’m at. I have an old Commando 800 rolling chassis that came from the local auction. It’ll get a square hood from the 60’s. Maybe the hood will be shortened... how far I’m not sure yet. The chassis might even get a slight stretch, as I see fit. I grabbed a rolling automatic chassis from @fast88pu at last year’s big show, with hydro lift. It’ll be mated out back with some 15” race car tires. I’m going back to my roots with a @pullstart engine. @elcamino/wheelhorse gave @19richie66 a Predator 6.5 horse engine at 2018’s Big Show, who gave it to me. It should work just dandy, with a dual exhaust dumping out back. The Commando tower has manual lift which I’ll try to retain for underside attachments, since the hydro cylinder will be used for the dump box. Yep, it’s a UTV/Gator inspired build. I still need to find a decent Ohio Steel trailer for the box, or I might add some Wheel Horse flair and use some hood skins to build box sides. I am not sure if I’ll make this a bench seat or single seat vehicle. There are still some some surprises in the works with a special @Vinylguy decal package, but that’ll stay under the radar until we’re closer to completion. Here’s to finishing this thing before June!

Here is another take on the idea.

It was about May when I started dreaming this project up. We saw this nice JD 140 at the Portage, WI show. The young man was nice enough to show me the box action. I think hydraulic dump would be the cat’s meow!

A little over 600lbs of steel, 15lbs of 6013 welding rod, a huge, HUGE, HUGE, THANK YOU to Jim @WHX24 for his help today and the metal work is finally done on my new trailer. Here is the best pic that I could get from the back. Jim pointed out the drawer for the ramps. I don't like ramp gates on a trailer, most feel like pulling a parachute down the road to me. So when I built the orange trailer 15yrs a go I made a drawer to hold the ramps under the trailer. I was able to salvage this drawer from the old trailer and install it on the new trailer. When I made it the last time the door was made from what ever I had laying around and it was effective but not real pretty. This time I made the door out of new metal for better ascetics. After Jim left I also added some tie downs, can't have too many of those . I discussed adding a head ache bar to the front or as Jim called it a Horse stopper. After a very short discussion we both decided it would be a good idea. So we dug around to find some pipe and then while I was burning some metal together Jim set to work prepping the parts to make it. I think it turned out great and it is a good safety feature. This pic also shows the hitch set up. Nothing left to do now but throw some paint at it, do some wiring, and put the deck on. Unfortunately I have to go back to work tomorrow so progress will come to a halt until next weekend . I will post more pics when there is some thing to show.

Where did the time go Paul?? WOW!!! Now that is a plateau.

Ok, here's what I have. It's a 3/8" rod with closed end loops. That ain't gonna break easy.

Nice!!! That thing came out sweet. One thing I like about my trailer is the winch. Not used often but it's nice to have when needed for pulling up rollers. Just a hand crank winch with a strap, not a cable.

Picked up this 552 project yesterday. I got a battery for it and it runs. Next step is some tires. I pulled the wheels and dismounted the tires. I’ll be taking the wheels and hubs in for powder coating tomorrow and replacing the axle seals while it’s apart. Once I get it functional I’ll start fixing it up more.

I do have a 10’ skid... stacked about 3’ high up in the rack with random diamond plate, even some stainless, aluminum and whatnot. We’ll get something figured out.

Carb is not plastic after all. Gave it a little scratch and it's alli as usuall. Replacement fender arrived today and is now fitted. Looking better already. Thanks go to Chris Sutton for spotting it on e-bay.

I did kick around adding a tool box to the front but I'm gonna opt to keeping my tie downs & stuff in the truck. I have brothers that like to borrow things ya know. If they borrow the trailer and the tie downs are in it when it leaves, there's a pretty good chance that they won't be when it comes back. Just saying

I have had a 1970 GTO sitting in my garage since the mid 80's. Parked it when the transmission quit shifting properly and no 98 octane fuel. Did start gathering parts in the late part of the 80's. Quarter panels were re- placed and trunk floor replaced, frame sandblasted and painted. Health issues and other life issues caused it to just sit there. Through an odd set of circumstances last summer I found a guy close to me that restores cars and has done a bunch of GTO's. He came up and looked at the carand as of Nov 20th it is in his shop. It is now back to bare metal and awaiting his magic touch! Since he has the body I figured I had better get the engine and rest of drive train ready. I have the engine ready, transmission ready to be bolted to it. Both of my kids are happy dad finally got thjis thing somewhere to be finished up.

You can get a centrifigal clutch that engages at 1800 RPM. Even with the engine running at full you can still slow and idle with the hydo lever. Going too long on the frame will give it a worse turning radius than a greyhound bus so keep that in mind to. Changing the Akerman angle on the steering arms will help and also make the front wheels track better.

Okay so the pulley came-in today, took off the 6" OEM and put on a 4.5" pulley with no issues. I really like the difference in the speed of 2nd speed high to mow the grass..... I took it out for a pretty good test this afternoon …… ME LIKEY ….. thanks to all for the helpful suggestions..... Think I will end-up with a 5/8ths 80 or 81 inch belt. I had a 1/2 X 79 laying around and used it for the test. Worked well.

Eric, I would open them all up at the same time. You just have to get the left (or brake shaft side) off to see what you have. You may even have one of those 8 speeds that used the needle bearing for the lack of the #1533 ball bearing. I envy you having a nice winter and 3 transmissions to explore! Take good pictures, measurements of axles, whether you have the one or two piece mushroom gears, what your side plates are made of (if 10 pinion) (steel or aluminum). With what you may have, I would want to know the case half numbers and casting numbers if you have them. A casting number will tell you the year or close to when they used the half...ie...no way they used a half that was made in 78 in 77...but they could have used it in 79 or 80. Start a thread with pictures of all 3 transmissions. Let @pullstart give them a name....let's see...Rue Paul would be #1 (transmissions)...Geraldine might be 2nd.

I hate to admit it, well not really I buy tractors for parts. If the price is right buy it, a parts tractor could turn into a project depending on it's condition and how much you like it. It's a Charger or electro/with a hydraulic lift, an added plus. K-series do have balance gears but are very reliable. The plus side is it looks to have been stored in doors and not out in the weather. The rear lift on that tractor is a desirable item and I would guess the deck is a 42". Pull the spark plug and check it for oil deposits, turn the engine buy hand and check the hydro's fluid. If it looks good, go for it. Buy them all!!! That's my motto.

Earlier this year I purchased a 10x20 shed from Shelter Logic through Northern Tool. It was on sale at the time for around $330, and so far I love it. Now keep a few things in mind, as previous posters have mentioned you must clean the snow off during every storm. It is amazing how much an inch or two of snow can cause the roof to sag. The other thing is I went into this purchase viewing this tent as a temporary solution. Under good care these can last a while, however your best option is always wooden, or even metal structure. For me this fit my budget for now and I will be putting aside money over the next 2-3 years to build something.

Thanks Lane. There will also be some pocket tie downs in the middle of the bed. The white arrows show the extra cross pieces I added so there would be something solid to bolt them to. I like to have a lot of tie down options.

Yes was just throwing out some trailer essentials that we might have missed 'Fish. . Dan says he just pushes them on. Comments were then thrown around about when you get to be a certain age with bum shoulders! I've got a nice almost brand new high test hand winch I dumpster dived for (right up your alley ) for consideration Dan but needs cable or a strap. Then again you can always hook a come along to that handy weld on up front. Nice to have a trailer littered with those. I also have that set of high test safety chains that you gave me but guessing you have another set... Only other thing I can think of is a box of sorts for storing tie downs, extra quart of oil, lug nut wrench & other road essentials? Most likely would have to go up front?

When you get the retaining ring off take a good look at it. They are stamped when made so one side has rounded edges and the other has sharp edges. In this application you want to install it so the sharp edges face out so it fits the groove better. If installed with the rounded side out side pressure on the wheel can force it off the axle. The groove in the axle deserves a good cleaning also. Garry

Nice looking work. You might want to go over the welds where you stretched the axle with a needle de-scaler. That will peen the metal, which will reduce the residual stresses caused by the welds. This reduces the chances that a fatigue crack would start at the welds in the middle of the axle.

I bought ChannelLock 927 snap ring pliers last year, and I'm real happy with them so far. I hear from more experienced tool guys that they're not the same quality as ChannelLock products of the past, but these were a major step up from what I was using before. They come with an assortment of straight and right angle tips -- do yourself a favor and buy a spare set, I've already lost some of mine. The tips are part no. 927T. I bought mine at a local hardware store, they're also available from numerous online sources.

So he asked and I helped....and enjoyed it. Back in the day when I worked in shipyards welders didn't do any grinding. Not allowed by union rules so every welder had to have a sidekick who did the grinding ... guess what I was today! Had a productive day tho and got her up on axle. Looking to be a very nice horse hauler! Didn't get a pic of the "horse stopper" on the front Dan sorry. ..any body wants to get him something for his birthday, Xmas , father's day .. a welders apron would be appropriate. .. more than once a caught him to be a flaming... The orangish racks in the back are a nifty slide storage for loading ramps that was repurposed off the old trailer with a hinged door to trap then in during transit. The ramps hook in the back channel for moving wher needed. Tractors will be easily be able to be loaded.

I have found 3/8” bolts (my preferred method) or C clips (pain in the butt sometimes) holding the wheels on. Frank... being a Frankenstein tractor... has one of each!

I took a couple of days to play with the 857 between other projects. I had been seeing where some of the rat rod guys were coating their rides with a mixture of boiled linseed oil and a little mineral spirits. Decided I give it a try. I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out - but, one word of caution, don’t do this if you think you might want to paint down the road. I cleaned up the muffler and wheels and gave them a quick paint. I had to use Miller’s tire paint on the tires because someone else had decided there was no need to worry if they got red paint on the wheels (had to be from another tractor as they are narrow and the tractor is 100% original paint.). Pretty pleased with the look. I’ll update as time goes to see how long before I have to oil again.

Me and Willy go back a long way, and if he is ever Ridin' on the City of New Orleans, he can always stop in here. I have the best chance of that happening cents, since, sense we now have Recreational Pot in Illinois and Rye Whiskey from Kentucky and Point Beers from Steven's Point Wisconsin. Bring on the party.
