7 pointsDO NOT USE THIS GREASE!!! These transmissions are made to throw the oil around inside the transmission case, thus lubing things that do not set in the amount of oil that is usually in the trans. Anything to thick will not get passed the #1533 bearing and properly lubricate the bearings in the outer axle. While we are on it...you also DO NOT want to over fill these manual transmissions. If anyone on here gets a chance, take your manual transmission and put it on the bench...put on the intake shaft pulley and hook it up to a 1/3 hp electric motor, with a fan belt. Put it in any gear and plug it in. Look down where the shifter goes and see the oil storm inside the case. You will see why 90wt is the best choice for these transmissions.

5 pointsIts been said 'what good is a post without pics, especially from a noob', right? Started disassembling things to clean and perform the maintenance on my newly acquired 91 520H (first Wheel Horse by the way and I love it!) and as always, one thing lead to another and it has turned into a full blown 'chassis up' restoration/custom. This will not be a show piece, so not going for perfection here- its gonna be used, a lot, it WILL get dirty, and probably scratched and chipped up here and there. You purists will probably not like me haha, some MILD custom work is in the plans, mainly some very subtle patina and earlier decals. Its hard to make a late model, pointed nose variety look like an older model but Im gonna try, so here we go! Any advice along the way, please speak up! I own a classic car shop and weve built plenty of 100k+ cars, but that doesnt mean I cant make mistakes, as I already have. Pic 1 was the day I rolled it off the trailer. The next, well, theres this custom header shop nearby, and they have boxes of stainless 'oops' pieces......

5 points"00" is a grease, not an oil. it is for the Big Box Store throw-away mowers that have a transmission without proper bearings and is only designed to last a couple years. The bearings in your transaxle need to have oil that is designed to cling to them and be circulated by the gears rotating in the sump.

4 points@WHX24 found this located near me and asked if I would pick it up for him. Well, it was sold when he contacted the owner. I was disappointed because I wanted to see it in person. It seemed like a steal at $150 or at least it did to me. Out of curiosity what's your opinion on the value? It sure looks to be in good shape and as far as running, the ad said they haven't run it in 4 years. Pretty cool little Pond.

4 pointsMy tiles are laid! It’s time to head to my brother’s place for a Christmas overnighter and let this all cure for a day or two!

4 pointsThat service bulletin about the shift rails and stop pin is #60 issued 1-15-65. I'm betting they still used up any old rails they had on hand. The bulletin about using 40 wt to help alleviate the problem was somewhere before that. They had changed the owners manuals to 40 wt and when they changed the rails they neglected to change the owners manuals back for a bit (knowing the Ponds, probably using up what they already had printed). Keep in mind that this only pertains to the 2 piece case trannys. The 3 piece didn't have the suction issue. I'm with professor Stevasaurus on the 90 wt...………..period. Been playing with these things for 60 years and it works.
-
4 pointsEric, if you over fill these transmissions, you will not get the oil thrown around like you need. Please...if anyone gets a chance...put the trans on a bench and belt it to a 1/3 hp or another horse to look down into the shift hole. When you see how the oil is thrown around, it will tell you tons about these transmissions.
-
4 pointsHere is the deal...if you have a dip stick (newer trannys)...you also have the fill plug on the left side of the transmission. Go with the dip sick. If you do not have a dip stick, you still have the fill plug on the left. Go with that...it should be pretty close to the same amount...1/12 qts to 2 qts. You cannot go wrong with that information. Something to think about...if you pull out the fill plug on the left side of the trans and no oil seeps out...you are low on the level of oil that needs to be in there...whether you have a dip stick or not!! These trannys are from 1958 and they are still going strong...90 wt oil...end of discussion!! The only exemption is what happened with the shift rails and the oil suction issue. Fix that and you are still at 90 wt. 1960 to 1967?? @Racinbob

4 pointsWow, thanks you all! I camp, hunt, and do a lot of outdoorsy stuff. About 4 years ago I bought an old Coleman lantern at an antique shop and restored it. Two months later I had 7 and realized this may become a problem, but assured the girlfriend "this is a fun hobby and keeps me at home, I can foresee having 12-15 but thats it." A year later I counted 104, they overtook the garage, back shed, some found their way into the house on display, then began pouring over to my work office when she said "buy all you want, but you're not bringing any more to this house!" Im now afraid to count, and no doubt hit close to 150 before selling 25-30 off. Long story short, if this addiction is even remotely close to lanterns, I am in big, big trouble!

3 pointsThe sun looks so huge tonight... I just realized that we’re in the same time zone as a place such as Maine! It’s 5 o clock and it’s probably pitch dark huh @ebinmaine?

3 pointsMy favorite Christmas scene is the Nativity Scene in front of our county court house. The birth of Christ has been celebrated in the same location for several decades.
-
3 pointsOverfilling could hinder the splashing You can fill until it flows out the fill plug or, as I have done for years, 1 1/2 qt in 3 and 4 speeds and 2 qt in 6 and 8 speeds. There's a chart around here someplace that also follows these amounts.

3 pointsYes when age and getting around becomes a factor Id have to agree with you....But I think id just find a cozy small town then. Everyone has a preference and weighing all options as we go helps us to decide. Ive no children or anything sadly but when my time comes Ill probably just fade into the bush.....smiles.

3 pointsYep mike, if I could get her in the house I would do. First outing today in the driveway, all seems good with the new wheels and hubs at the front. Got to make a PTO brake as that bit is missing. Not a big job. Just chatting with an exhaust fabricator to see if I will need to sell a kidney to get a shiny new muffler.

2 pointsThe last two day we have had about eight inches of snow in Greencastle, Indiana. Not much for some places in the country but more than we have had for a few years. The DePauw University 1884 McKim Observatory is in my front yard on a earth raised circle. The brass telescope came from London and was made around 1880.

2 pointsSo the other day I opened my back door only to find out the metal clad on the outside fell off. That's when I Took my finger to touch it and pushed it all the way through. Yikes! Called Pella to get just a replacement slab with glass and no hardware.l was told it was $2000. Yikes again! So I'm going to pick up lumber next week to build another door to fit the hardware and the glass. This Otto be a fun but challenging project.

2 pointsHi! Newbie here! What a great site! I’m not out cutting grass, snow on the ground, temps in the teens! So I’m thinking about next summer. Need parts! Inherited my MIL’s Raider 14, been mowing with it for years and babying it along with parts found on EBay. Where do you guys find your parts? Specifically looking for this little gem, if anyone has an idea where to get NOS parts for this “never give up” lawnmower I will be one happy camper! Thanks!
-
2 pointsWe have several members that can fix you up with good used parts like that, but fifty year old NOS may be hard to come by. You could post an ad in our free classifieds. https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/classifieds/wanted/?do=form&d=2 A-Z Tractor is a good honest supplier many of us use. https://a-ztractor.com/

2 points40w motor oil has been working in my L107 for 52 years and she is used year round. We have a tendency to Over think this oil/lubrication stuff. these are not high speed high stress trannies. Change whatever you use and keep the water out and they will outlive you!!!!

2 pointspost an ad in the wanted section, I am sure someone here has something they would sell off.

2 pointsI concur.. walk behinds are virtually worthless, unless it's a David Bradley.. people pay a lot of money for them just to have as decor it seems.. that and they were on some History Channel show.. so that drove the prices to insanity. Though they seem to be dropping now.. I've had an Evinrude/OMC walk behind, Pond, Simplicity, Planet Jr., Gravely, DB, Handiman.. etc. They were all cute to look at and putt around a show with. But that was it. The Gravely was atleast versatile. Those Clintons can be had for about a dollar a pound at local shows. I have never paid more than 75 for nice original ones. And often bought them for tires, if nothing else. I stopped buying them entirely now, there's just such a small demand for anything but the most unusual.. Sprywheel for example. A neat collectors piece. But unless you need to do some light tilling, they are virtually useless these days. (This is coming from the guy who as 600+lb 3hp engines that sit around and do nothing too mind you) Some makes did offer a rotary mower for the front.. just incase you were looking for an excuse to run one now and then..

2 pointsYes i have heard it called that. I remember my dad using that term growing up on the farm. I used to ask him do we get it from the field. I was real young then!

2 pointsSo, my girls will be spoiled this Christmas. We could not find a better deal on a good set than the 224 pc Craftsman sets at ACE. So they are starting off right with quality tools and two different paint pens. Let’s just hope they arrive from backorder on the 24th as planned! Merry Christmas, ladies!

2 pointsI bet a multi pack of smoke bombs aughtta do the trick! Light a red one, toss it in the muffler outlet and black duct tape the inlet shut... CHOOOOO CHOOOOO!!!
-
2 pointsagree with above on the zero rating , that does not apply to older style gearbox, you could go 75x90 wt gear oil and it would help in cold conditions, my own opinion , is that , REGULARLY CHANGING TRANSMISSION OIL IS VITAL ,. another thing is to regularly use every gear and hi/lo ranges to cycle every phase of operation. i have taken a stiff and hard shifting transmission, and put ROAD TIME ON IT , to heat it up and then flush it out with a lighter atf fluid or kerosene in operation. usually its a couple of these flush cycles that make a transmission operate like new, it just takes time. only my opinion , have a good holiday, pete
