There's a young couple that moved in down the road from us a few months ago, they run every afternoon down our dead end road together,#younglove. A few times they've stop and talked to me about my Z turn and my tractors, they plan to buy one to maintain their acre. I told him if he is just going to cut grass a good Z turn is the way to go. They plan on putting in a large garden, and he want something that can handle yard and garden attachments. I explained the difference between a garden tractor and a riding mower, and I suggested buying an older garden tractor and a new Z turn. I could tell he liked that idea but the wife said why buy two when you can get one that does it all, so you know who won that debate #younglove. So the other day he rides up on a new Husqvarna garden tractor he bought at the local dealers end off the year sell. It a GT and it's pretty stout, a lot of plastic though, but my man is beaming with pride. He said it was more than he planed on spending but the guy told him it would do everything he wants and then some. He was showing me everything and telling me about everything it can do, then he showed me the extra features that he really liked, cup holder, deck wash out port, metal front bumper, and of course the I/Smart phone holder . He also has an app for his phone that lets him know when the maintenance is do. As he road off, I thought of an old song: curb feelers and fender skirts scrub the chrome 'till your elbow hurts pinstripes and cherry packs grass stains on your second hand slacks keep on bettin' think your gonna win you can dress it up and try to pretend a car's a car and that's a fact but a Deuce and a Quarter aint no Cadillac

Funny story , as I posted in another thread , I sold my sled & trailer a bit ago . The fella that came to look at it brought his son ( I think ) he was 16 or 17 at most . I had to uncover and push out of the garage the 66 Ariens snowblower and the Wheel Horse . As soon as the Tractor hit the sunlight , the kid forgot all about the sled and couldn't stop drooling over the Wheel Horse . Maybe all youth is NOT LOST .

This is what I use, I added a strobe to the top of the cab this year.

I am taking the other side, it's his money his yard, let him enjoy it. they are nice machines if used within its limits. there is dealer by me that sells them. I checked them out. yes they are platicy and fancy. I think alot people buy them thinking it's a sub compact and they are going to move the earth with it. most of the world doesn't want old equipment anymore regardless of how well it works. it's hard to find shops that even want to work on the older, out of business, power equipment anymore too. to those reading this be very thankful you can work on your own stuff and teach all you can

Here's a few pics.. Patriot horse when I first got a plow set-up. Worked great but the engine ticks a bit. In order to save that engine I switched to the failed effort of the mongrel mixed up 1267. When Cinnamon horse was done we switched the 42" plow to it. All those tractors were fine for moving snow but the tires I use are oversized all around and I was steering into the windrow of snow all the time. Then we got a 48" plow and it was great!! Sometime this season we'll try out the monster 60" plow made by @wallfish. Believe it or not this is a 48" plow. Trina got a cool angle and it looks enormous....

Big day today- I took my newly acquired 1988 and 1989 312-8's off the trailer for the first time! These are my first Wheelhorse tractors, and my first garden tractors ever... I've had a stamped steel 12hp MTD lawn tractor for years, but need to up my game because we're moving from a half acre to 8 acres. I got the pair for a great deal off Craigslist. I feel like I hit the jackpot- this gentleman was a Corvette guy, and kept fanatical records for every service ever on the 89, which he bought new. The 88 is in great shape too. I got a 42" rear discharge deck and a 42" single stage snowblower in the deal, and he threw in a 25 gallon 12V sprayer as well. Hours are ~1500 for the 89 and ~1300 for the 88, which isn't bad. They don't smoke, start with just a hint of choke, and need minimal maintenance- and i know exactly where to find the info i need to fix these girls

Lotta nice rigs! Mine isn’t so fancy but she pushes snow like a dump truck Posted it plenty of times before...it started life as a Wheel Horse Workhorse GT1600/8 speed. Originally it had a Briggs 16 twin. I found it for sale in NY a few years ago with a Kohler Magnum 10 installed. I picked up Karl @nylyon on the way thru Brewster for the ride. Swapped out all 4 tires to something better, added cast weights and a 5 sector 48” plow. This sucker has performed almost flawlessly all these years with normal maintenance.

A Wheel Horse dealership offering some killer Black Friday deals is about the only way you MIGHT see me out on Black Friday shopping. I never go out and participate in any of this retailer-driven madness.

Little update.. First of all, thank you all for the prayers and well wishes. 5 days of continuous chemo, 2 to go. Still feel fine except for starting to lose my appetite. They tell me you bottom out a few days after chemo is done. Talk to you all later Jay

That sheet metal wonder put together with sheet metal screws isn't going to last long if used as a garden tractor.

Does he seem like the type that might have any mechanical ability? If he does, I'd be inclined to offer to show him how to change the oil and do other basic maintenance on it. If you do that and he learns that he can do some things himself, he might be more inclined to buy a real tractor when his gives up in a few years!

He has it listed for $950 with the plow, mower deck, and a beat up old little trailer. I am trying to be as respectful as possible and have told him that there are many unknowns in this equation and really I'm assuming all the risk. The problem is its located about an hour and a half drive from my house so Im in a bit of a pickle with being able to do a good once over on it and try to get it to start. The belt cover alone is $150, and you guys know the cost of the rest of it. He has come down to $800 but that is before I was brought up to speed on the starter/generator cover price. Its my first tractor but I feel I have a good eye for quality and don't mind getting the hands dirty. My heart is set on the 953, its such a beauty. Im not going to paint it or anything, I love the patina and colour of the faded red...... but I do want it to be a fully functioning perfectly running machine hydraulics and all. I just want it to plow a little snow and take my daughter and her friends (all under 5yrs old) on tractor rides around the block and to the fairgrounds. Take it to the local steam show on the labour day weekend and putt around. I really didn't expect to get this type of response but boy am I pleasantly surprised by the clydesdales in this forum. Much respect.

Seems awful early to be talking about a major winter event (snow ) but all the weather guessers on all the local channels are saying we are gonna get hit! Hearing all sorts of measurements from 4” up to 14”. Luckily my winter machine is all prepped for whatever we get. Took it out tonight and buzzed around the yard for 15 minutes just to exercise the ol’ girl.

Noooo..... Unfortunately not. That will get us through sometime in late February I believe. Kind of hard to estimate because this is the first year that we've tried to rely more on wood. That's our new installed rodent condo system. No more to put in there for this year Lee. Next spring as soon as we can get in the forest we'll start harvesting and drying. We're planning to come up with around 4 cord for next year.

We finished up putting the metal roof on and then filled it right up. Somewhere around 2 cord in there.

I buy good, quality stuff when, and only when, I need it...in the quantity I need... Sometimes its on a Friday, sometimes another ending with "day"... I save a lot of money by NOT buying anything because its "on sale"... I also don't watch TV, so I couldn't tell you what sales there are...this also tends to save money...

Stepney Your a genius! Fired right up! Can't thank you enough for the suggestion.

if they are going on a lawn tractor , car, boat, airplane, truck etc i prefer to just make my own battery cables...that way you get exactly what you need. i have a crimper , 1-2-4-6 gauge cable , and an assortment of ends. add some heat shrink tubing and you are done faster than driving to an auto parts store

You got bitten by the WH fever real quick, you may have to get a shot for that, did you know they have one similar to a flu shot for your problem ? I have a 77 C-120 8 speed and wish I could find one with a Hydro but they seem scarce in the Northeast.
  33. 3 points
Wheel Horse with a hydro is not a substitute for a zero turn - but it can bridge the gap between a Wheel Horse with a manual trans and a zero turn ( and then of course you have the versatility of a garden tractor )

Once we move onto my new property- first priority is going to be to setup one of those harbor freight "duct tape sheds" so i can fill it with more wheel horses. i'm in Western NY and this must be a hotbed for these tractors cuz i see a beat up but running C-120A for $175 and i can't stop looking at the thing wondering if i need a hydro in my life

Ok the first real "fix" to my 1989 312-8... one of these is a transparent Lego cylinder capped with a transparent round Lego tile. can you tell which one? Total cost to fix= free because I raided my kids' Lego bin. I think online these are under $.10 apiece but the shipping is kind of rough.
  36. 3 points
Oh I'm addicted already- i kind of lied, they came off the trailer 2 weeks ago but i just joined the forum. in that time i've already thrown some parts and fixes at the 89 and discovered it needs oil seals on the brake shaft and left axle. This forum is pure gold for finding parts and info to fix.

Whaddya wanna bet they spent more than enough to buy 2 fully outfitted Wheelhorses with a half dozen implements.... We'll stick to our old iron.

I also refuse to follow this retail madness. Sure you can prolley get good deals but to see crowds trample over each other to get to that good price? No thanx!

So, to add a little interest to my Thanksgiving day, we had some unexpected visitors show up at the door. Three very friendly goats showed up and made a nuisance of themselves. A call to Animal Control and the sheriff showed up. We found where they had escaped from and we herded them back home.

We're waiting to see what's cookin for Northern New England too. I've got the heavy tires and chains on the Cinnamon horse. Gonna mount up the 48" plow and throw the steel weights on Sunday. Trina has a mid-mount grader on her 867. Both walk behind snowblowers are tuned up, gassed up, ready to go! BRINGITT !!!

Totally understandable. Patience sometimes can be hard to achieve. I've been there. I'll be there again I'm sure. In the trucking and machine operation field I've said to quite a good many people over the years... If you have to process the thought about whether or not you should do something... you probably should not do that thing. Just like anything else, supply and demand dictates the pricing of any given thing. None of us are in the area that you are and thus, we don't know the supply or demand. The correct price for an item is the one that makes the buyer and the seller comfortable and happy. Although I do realize full well that a 953 is a whole different level of tractor, I just really would not be anywhere near comfortable paying more than $300 to $400 for a Wheelhorse that does not run or drive and you can't test the condition of the hydraulic system.

It may very well stay bonded but once a brake lining gets oil soaked it isn't a terrible idea to replace it. It'll work if it stays glued in but it'll work better if it's new and dry. IMHO and experience.

All of us probably had a similar response when we first showed up. I've been on for a couple years now. Many of us have become good friends, be it digitally or close by. Ask a question about ANYTHING. Not just tractors.... You'll have advice or an answer VERY soon. Lovely group of folks....

From 1789, George Washington..... I found this to be most excellent: “Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor…. For the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted; for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed…” “And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations, and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions … to render our national government a blessing to all the People, by constantly being a government of wise, just and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed … and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord, to promote the knowledge and practice of the true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and Us, and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.”
