14 pointsTeaching my oldest daughter how to stack firewood is 'funner' when she gets to drive the 520H!

11 pointsGot my first retired military paycheck today!!! After months of waiting and stacks of forms and endless phone calls! I guess it does pay to turn 60! Now I just gotta live to hit 61 Nothing like a good ole check from the U.S. Treasury. I did drop it on the floor to see if would bounce @Achto says its like winning the lotto... I dunno Dan it wasn't that big of a check but enough for a couple more horses! Now to apply for cheap heath insurance and other benefits. Any tips from other retirees?

9 pointsAbout a month ago, I was using my Raider 10 for yard work. It required lots of shutting the engine off and restarting. Toward the end of the day, the tractor would barely start, and I had to jump it to put it away. I found the original regulator (dated 1971) had gone belly up. I replaced the regulator, and all is fine. I decided to add a volt gauge so I could monitor the charging system. Ebay to the rescue! $7.64 later, I have a voltage gauge... I didn’t realize how nasty the steering wheel was... Danny

7 pointsLot of stuff floating around in my head...... problem is that it’s not connected to anything up there
-
6 pointsStill in the works, Its still red and just looks like any other 1054 at the moment. Over the winter I Promise to get a thread going on this build

5 pointsCongrats Jim! Thanks for your service. After retiring from crawling around in peoples basements, you better get a part time job doing some thing Jim. I'm sure Cindy don't want you hanging around the house playing with tractors & finding things to break all the time. Maybe you could get a job mowing the greens at Lawsonia with a reel mower on a RJ. 36 holes to mow every day, JUST THINK OF THE SEAT TIME!!

5 pointsThanks guys! Working a half day and then spending the afternoon with the family. I guess growing up isn't so bad after all.

4 pointsOk so here is what I did... 1. Checked to ensure the rear was connected tight to the frame and two of the bolts were just slightly loose so they got tightened. Still not fixed 2. Pulled fender pan and really cleaned EVERYTHING good. Found the set screw on top rear corner of the tranny that holds the detent spring in place. That was loose. I puled spring, inspected it and stretched it slightly and then reinstalled. 3. Oil fluid was overfull so I changed oil and filter (takes 5 quarts with the new filter. I have not driven it for an extended period of time however so far no popping out of gear going down a few hills when tested. Hopefully that is the trick. I feel the issue was the detent screw was not tighten enough. Thank you for everyones help. I hope to test it out more this weekend.

4 pointsI did that. Then I worked another 14 years and woke up one morning tired and said maybe I will go back to being retired. I did, Marv

4 pointsI heated it with the torch and bent it slowly. A bit of used oil sludge helped to heat treat/quench it.

4 pointsSay Richie, is that a pic of the two of us from a couple of years ago?😂 I did the tire inflation markings with decals on my VW. Really adds to the military look!
-
4 pointsI keep thinking about ways to incorporate things from the Thing - pun intended! Maybe a shovel mount, grille guard, antenna, emergency light?
-
4 points@Super-C 4 me, you can’t throw something out there that sounds that awesome and then say “Shhhh!” What’s the deal? I would love to see a build thread on that...

4 pointsOne cool detail on many vintage military vehicles is the tire inflation pressure printed above each tire and lifting eyes with "lift here" etc.
-
4 pointsExactly the type of thing I was thinking of. Since it’s Emory’s idea, I might let him get to help design it. He was really excited about the VW, so we’ll go with his idea. Will have to wait until after Christmas though, as I promised him I would paint his “Scrub Cadet” for Christmas this year. I’ll start a thread when we get started.

3 pointsI retired 10 years ago and I have enjoyed ever minute of it. I do a lot of fishing and playing with my grand kids. I have taken up making jig heads and fishing weights. I sell them on craigslist. I make enough money this year to buy my wife a new car and paid cash for it. It takes a while to get started but it keeps me busy and keeps me from being a couch potato. Find something to do with your new time off. This will also help you stay in better health than just sitting around in the house. Have yourself a great retirement for the rest of you days. I am 71 and still having a great time with the rest of my days. By the way I get all my health benefits from the VA also. I have problems with Argent Orange but I do not let it stop me from keeping busy. Best of luck.

3 pointsGee Jim, by the title you had me fooled for a minute, I thought maybe you hit the lottery big on a scratch ticket and were running around your back yard in the dark yelling WOO HOO in your birthday suit. All kidding aside, thanks for your service and don't spend it all in one place.
-
3 pointsThanks Jimbo been on the VA like a dirty diaper too! This whole thing has been like navigating a minefield with blinders on put finally figuring out persistants pays.

3 pointsThanks Sylvan, I have renovated a lot of machine tools in my time but never a vehicle like this. Similar methods but this seems more of a living thing as I will get to drive it when it's done. Mick

3 pointsAfter straightening then bending it closer, I ended up cutting and welding it. Fingers crossed, it’ll get in there!
-
3 pointsWell if you look carefully in the second pic theres a small blue dot in the middle of it . Hmmmm?

3 pointsThis thread got my all excited about it again I couldn't help but to share what's floating in my head

3 pointsThe fuel cap was broken and rusty. No gauge parts left at all, just the cap and dial. So I machined up the face and made an aluminium disc to bond over the top. I made a little ide entry breather unit out of brass to allow air to enter the tank but not water. Quite happy with the result.

3 pointsI’d love to see more of that one! I can’t tell if the frame was moved up on the transmission, or if something else in the rear is going on?

3 pointsI had a problem with a tender boiling a good battery dry a few years back. I now put the tender on a timer where it will only be on one hour a day, works for me.

3 pointsWas getting the Wheel Horse C160 out to clean and remove the tiller. One-year-old Duralast gold battery from AutoZone was toast. It was kept on a tender all last winter, GT was used earlier this year to till the garden. Battery would not take a charge. Looked up the warranty on the battery.... 3 MONTHS!!!!! I guess they know they sell a piece o’crap. Never again!!! Grabbed the fairly new one out of the Cub Cadet 123 (that needs a new right front axle) and it fired right up. I cleaned up the tiller and got it stored away, got the front blade out and more accessible, but ran out of light before I could get it mounted on the C160, in anticipation for snow this winter. Meanwhile, also removed the bagger from the Craftsman PGT9000 and put it away. I am hoping to get the Speedex 1631 out soon and plough the garden..... hopefully that will help with the weeds next year. Off to local Battery Outfitters shop for a new battery tomorrow..... hopefully will have better than a stinkin’ 3-month warranty on their GT batteries.

2 pointsThis popped up for sale today... I wonder if this new regulation of weed is the culprit?
-
2 pointsWell, maybe not unto death... I was “retired” for two months...enough of that...back to work!
-
2 pointsThere are some people out there who are uninformed about actual value and look to see what the highest asking price on is and start there. I would go over and talk to the seller and attempt to educate them on actual market value. If they know you aren't trying to rip them off you may be able to strike a deal. May not happen that day, but be sure to leave your phone number.
-
2 pointsShow us a picture of the parts and mark where you suspect it is leaking. Some possible options, as I understand the problem. If the "hole" that the seal seats in is worn or pitted you could possible use some "gap filling" locktite in the seal groove to get a seal. If it has pitting you could fill the pits with JB weld and carefully sand it smooth. Both the locktite and JB weld repairs would require the part be oil free.

2 pointsOr it was just another C/L BS story looking to gather e-mails and phone numbers. Why would anyone give that tractor away for free??I mean, come on,ask fifty bucks for it.Someone would buy it.
-
2 pointsThose look like 1045 front tires... Dell I love Emory’s idea! Maybe theme it after the Thing, with gloss black trim as you’ve done?
