15 pointsSo, as you may know, the Mississippi River in south Louisiana is lined with refineries and chemical plants. A fire broke out at one chemical plant, and the local fire department raced to the scene and immediately called for backup - they needed a lot of backup because of the proximity to a large refinery. Fifteen other crews showed up with their shiny new engines and ladder trucks. They looked at the inferno and determined it was already out of control. Best thing they could do was try to keep the fire from spreading to the neighboring plants. The plant manager begged the fire crews to try to put the fire out because his plant warehouse contained forty million dollars worth of chemicals. No one was willing to tackle a fire that was already out of control, nor were they willing to risk their lives and shiny new engines on a lost cause. The plant manager proclaimed that he would award one million dollars to any fire department who could save his warehouse full of valuable chemicals. There were no takers. As the crews organized to keep the fire from spreading, they heard an approaching siren and horn blaring and saw an old, dirty, beat-up engine bearing down on them at full speed. A group of old men on board were yelling "Get out of the way! Get out of the way!" Firemen lept off the road as the old truck barrelled through the main gate to the plant and crashed into the first plant building near the fire. To the astonishment of the onlookers, the old men clammored down off the truck, connected hoses, and deftly set about controlling the blaze. The other crews joined in the effort, and within 15 minutes, the fire was under control. Everyone was amazed at the bravery and professionalism the elderly firemen had shown. When the fire was out, the plant manager approached the elderly firemen, thanked them profusely, and explained his offer of one million dollars to the crew that saved his expensive chemical warehouse. A crowd gathered around them as the plant manager asked the old fire chief what he planned to do with all that money. "Well, thank you very much. I don't know about ALL of the money, but I'll tell you one thing for sure. The FIRST thing I'm gonna do is get the brakes fixed on that fire truck."

6 pointsThe 1st thing is that a 1057 is a 1967 horse. The transmission is a #5058. This means that it is a "Heavy Duty" 3 speed with 1 1/8" axles. It also has the bevel gear differential...no pinions. The paint job looks great.

6 pointsYes, factory setup. The A-90 Special was built as a horizontal shaft with a Briggs engine I think only 1974.

5 pointsI’m not old, but sometimes can’t get out of bed. I don’t work for the man, I work for my family. Most times, it pays off somehow. Sometimes though, I can’t get out of my own way. I live an awesome life, have a wonderful wife and awesome kids. Sometimes, I wish it were legal to point, shoot, aim when I am cut off in rush hour traffic. All times, I ask myself if I can take a few minutes to help those on the side of the road. Everybody’s story reminds me of a song. It’s a great way to cope. Sing along with it, my friends! Sing as if nobody where listening! I can’t dance... but I will try once in a blue moon... after a bit of bonfire and friends and whatever is in my cup.... Dance as if nobody’s watching! Laugh, well laughter comes to me when everything else has hit the fan but nothing sticks around too long! You know the game... when the officer pulls you over saying “you don’t wanna be doing this right now” as you’re getting a tow towards home but it’s rush hour.... and you can only reply “you’re right, officer! I want to be camping right now!” P.S. @dells68 there’s a firefly in my room!

5 pointsFolks, if it ever appeared that I wanted sympathy, that wasn't my goal. I don't even fault uncle sam for my thing. I made that choice. I just figured that you folks would be a better sounding board than a bunch of people I'd never met. I just spend about half of my waking day looking up at this phone, so I thought I should make use of it.

4 pointsHad finished the Raider 12 and there was the lift, sitting there EMPTY.......... This is my $400 "barn find". It's a 94 416-8 with a little over 1100 hours. It had been sitting for about 4 years after the PO bought a zero turn. The guy I work for part time told me his uncle had a Wheel Horse in his shed and he might want to get rid of it. He sent me some pictures. It really looked like a brown lump. But he did clean off the ID tag. The shed turned out to be more of a "run in" with a dirt floor (and it didn't face east) Took the power washer to it and YEP There was a Wheel Horse underneath. New battery, fuel lines, spark plugs and an air filter and it ran like a champ. Even mowed the front yard with it. Couldn't stand looking at the empty life so.......Let the fun Begin!

4 pointsHi everyone. Well finally found my first Wheel Horse a few months back.. Its a 1966 1057 . Its in pretty decent shape . All original except the steering wheel. Has the original Wheel horse tires on it yet . Not to good though. I got a snow plow and the deck with it. Has the original 10 horse Kohler. I think it had some engine work done to it . There is another tag on it . i think it has something to do with the bearings. It runs and sounds good. no smoke. So my plans are to strip the tractor down and restore it. I started tearing everything apart. Taking a lot of pictures. And labeling everything. and making diagrams of stuff. The rear and trans seams pretty good .Gear oil nice and clean. The axles don't have any play or slop. Looks like somebody might have repaired them. . The rear axles measure 1 1/18 . Is that correct for this rear ? I thought 1 1/8 axles were in 8 speeds only. I'm just learning. Don't know. I really appreciate all the help from all of you guys on this great forum. I don't think i would have bought a wheel horse if it wasn't for this forum. I will be asking you guys a lot of questions. So i hope you don't get mad at me. I'm not to good with computers either. So you might have to bear with me. I am going to try to post some pictures . I know you guys like pictures . I finally finished the hood this morning. Thai isn't going to be know show tractor. Just a nice restoration of it , i Hope...............I am using Duplicolor red engine enamel with ceramic in it. 5 coats of red .Then i wet sanded it. Then buffed it. Then waxed it. NO clear coat. It turned out pretty nice . It looks much nicer in real life. All the parts will be stripped to bare metal.. So here's some pictures . I hope. They only let me put 2 pictures on . I will try it again. Thanks again everyone. Bob..................

4 pointsYou know it’s funny Kev, the simplest things in life are those that bring us the most joy. Good food and fireflies make the best friends and memories. What was a blast for a 9 year old warms the heart and souls of us old geezers. The simplest things bring the most joy, we just have to sit back and wait for them. Fireflies bring out the best in us all from 9 to 90! Have a great day my friend!

4 pointsWell okay. I'll go ahead and stick my broken butt on here too. First things first. To you and all of those of you who have served in any branch of the services whatsoever. Thank you. Many moons ago I was signed up to go in the Air Force but I did not go because the guy lied. A lot. Extensively. Everybody knows recruiters stretch the truth some but this guy actually did it so much he was downgraded and relocated. Blah blah blah. No worries. I've told some of you in the past and I'll tell everybody now. For a couple decades and change I didn't have a very easy life. Not complaining. It's the past. In 2013 I decided I did not like who I was and where I was headed. I ended up getting a divorce and losing about 90 lb. I have found some of that but I'm pretty comfortable where I'm at right now. During that whole exercise I went down into some of the deepest darkest holes emotionally that somebody could imagine. I've told quite a few people in the last few years... I've crashed and burned, and I've lived and learned. I got to a point where I decided consciously that I was sick of being cranky and negative all the time and really just wanted to be me and have fun. A joke about the fact that I am 5 years old a lot of the time. Well. I may be a little bit older than 5 but I live a great life now and I'm very happy. I guess that's why I feel like a little kid a lot of the time. Anybody. Any one of you. If you want to talk, complain, shoot the breeze, whatever. Send me a PM. I text regularly with several people on Red Square. Keep your chin up. Your chest out. And your mind open. And smile. After awhile you even begin to believe your own bright shiny face. Signed, Ebinmaine Eric Bear

3 pointsOver 24,000 have joined to date and about 350 are here on an average day. Lots of people come here for one specific item they want to sell and others, like me, seeking answers to a question and then they find out how many great people are here and stick around.

3 pointsWe just spent about 4 hours cutting wood and clearing brush. We cleared about 250 - 350 feet of path. Almost to the back of the property now. Also cut down a BUNCH of small white pines to give breathing and sun space to the hardwoods. Also cut up a red oak which will be for firewood in a season or two. This section of the path begins back around the white poplar that's laying on the forest floor. Zoom in just above the tractor seat and you can see the pile of oak fire wood. There's a path cut from here to there... Then to the left and around the corner and another couple hundred feet down in... We're almost all the way to the back of the property now. Awesome.

3 pointsIt was a simple choice not to buy a Big Gas bottle. I‘m searching in the Aquarium store for CO2, because the normally have 5 litre bottles, but just bigger bottles available. cost 120€/filling + deposit of 80€. - for just few Weldings too much money. so i thinkin about my options, how i can get a bit CO2 as Gas, the Hardwarestore has few smaller bottles 2 Litres, but no Pressureregulator for and a mini finethread i have no adapters for. The bottle costs 28€ And it’s a one Way bottle - no deposit. Than i see the Sodaclub display in the Hardwarestore, they offer an extrabottle gas including deposit 12,80 the filling about 7,99. it was about half the price of the Oneway Bottle. i simply remember i had purchased several months ago a refilleradapter for, what have an thread for big Bottles. So my decision was simply and clear, bring those both together an test how long i can Weld.😎 Have 2 reason‘s for using small bottles, firstly i wanna have that much Material in my less Space, on the other hand the weight is perfect for a quick repair Welding even if i must each time carry it. i‘m still satisfied, it works longer than i calculated or expected.😎 by app. 13l/min i can 20 minutes Welding and there is still a bit rest in the Bottle. for quick fieldrepairs it was a perfect solution with a Generator.

3 pointsNearly Finished. Just the Tubes for tiltcylinder must be ordered. Starting today with dismount the Shovel, than i dismount the Cylinders. Than i grind the Weldings a bit smoother. yap, looks good. Repaint the Arms after Test. than i jump into the Car an drove to Hardware store, because Gas is about nearly empty. just to be prepared, as i see a Paint, that comes closely to the Blue of my Beast. Hey it was also a rustpreventing Color -same like Hamerite. i grab a bottle of black and blue and my Gas and drove home. Adter Painting i compare and it seems the same Color. cool. what to do while waiting - decide to rework the Shovel. the Base idea was given ahead with quickchanger. Welding here Welding there and set additional Seems to enforce. than i opened the Black and paint it a bit. The Result looks pretty nice.

3 pointsThat story (in different renditions, Hay barn-House of ill repute, you name it) has been around forever! Thanks for sharing.

3 pointsThis is the place to come buddy. You’ve been here enough years to know that you are among friends who are here to support you. I think amongst us old horses heads one comon connection is the respect, admiration, and great thanks for your service to each and every one of us. Keep your chin up buddy - you’re among brothers!!!

3 pointsSympathies,Just know you are not alone.I look back on what I did in a day 20/30 or 40 years ago and I have a hard time even believing I did it.I built a 36' x 24' pole barn in 30 days by my self.I even set the trusses by hand ,solo.Without the support of my wife it would not have been possible. I won't go into the very serious health issues I have suffered but the least of them, was the removal of a malignant lung tumor 2 yrs ago.I am still going to fight and I hope you do as well.Life is good!

3 pointsGlad to help if I can.I took this tractor to the big show so if anyone was interested they had it to study. The boom is 4' 10" from ground to tip.The reach is 31" from the front of frame. The top portion of the boom is 10" long and the main section it attaches to is 41"It uses a Harbor Freight winch and with 45 lb rear weights will lift 400lbs with me in the seat. The boom is mounted to the outside of the frame and is reduced 1/2" internal spacing at the tip to house the pulley. The material I used is 2 inch channel iron which I salvaged from a previous project. My goal was to keep the boom as light as possible and I can carry it with one hand. This mount will not allow the mounting of a normal hood.

2 pointsYesterday I asked why was I so tired, when due to the wet weather, I'd done nothing. Today has been nice and sunny. Outside at 9am. I've cut down the out of control 25ft long boundary hedge from 6ft to 2ft high. Hauled the rubbish away with the Sears/Roper and trailer. Three good loads. Mowed the lawn, then fitted the deck to the C-125. Mowed green and verges then dismounted the deck and cleaned it down. Finally finished at 6pm. And you know something? I don't feel a bit tired.

2 pointsNews 12 at 6 o'clock, June 24, 2010 AUGUSTA, Ga. -- A lawnmower lawsuit is now shifting into gear. More than 15 manufacturers have been accused of misrepresenting and overstating the horsepower in engines. "Horsepower, it's a man thing now," says Harry's Equipment Shop owner Harry McGahee. "Everybody wants more horsepower ... A lot of people don't buy a lawnmower, because it doesn't have as high a horsepower than what it's rated at." A lawnmower in your garage bought between 1994 and April of this year could net you up to $35 if you have a push-behind lawnmower or up to $75 if you have a riding mower. The total amount of the settlement is $65 million dollars, and some companies are offering extended warranties. Individual awards could be lower than those amounts if enough plaintiffs join the class action suit. The settlement means the companies are not admitting they falsified horsepower but have decided it is in their best interest to pay out claims. John Deere, Husqvarna, Toro, Kawasaki, and several other brands of lawnmowers and lawnmower engines are included. You'll need the serial number of your lawnmower or lawnmower engine to file a claim

2 pointsJust wanted to share what I found for straps. Under $20 per set. These are from Zoro .com
-
2 pointsYou may remember a few years ago they stopped mentioning Horse power in Small engines talked more about ft-lbs of torque. There had been a lot of creative HP ratings prior to that. There are different ways of rating HP. The KT 17 and M18 are both flat head 42 cubic inch twins . The AO-42 twin on my Mule is 42 cubic inches overhead valve and is rated at only 14 hp. The cam shafts have different part numbers (Maybe Isky designed a high lift cam for Kohler on the Magnums...)
-
2 pointsLittle more progress on the trailer today. Paint, wheels and axle configuration completed. Decals arrived from Terry as well (as usual - fantastic quality @Vinylguy)...but I will make you wait to see those until applied to the finished product... All that's left is to line it all up, drill some holes, bolt it together, add the decals and then load the nieces and nephews... Oh, also thinking of adding a front wheel. It would "hang" from the tongue suspended while hooked up to the tractor, but would be used to wheel the trailer around when not hooked up. Have a spare wheel barrow wheel and an old bike fork that will work... We will see...not sure I want the added "stuff" on the trailer.

2 pointsMajority of the parts should be showing up today in the mail. Went to a local shop that recently closed and got some NOS blade kits. One for the 42" deck and one for the 36" deck for another tractor I have. The blades for the 36" are in original Wheel Horse packaging. I'm gonna save that box just because of that. Spent a little time shooting the breeze about wheel horses with the kid that's selling the shop contents off. He's got a lot of neat stuff in that place, and I invited him to join up here as well.
-
2 pointsI probably will. Who wouldn't want to see a 520H that has been pieced together from multiple tractors, powered by a Kohler from a Cub, with a turbo from a Ford?

2 pointsEric, If you need some help learning to solder Sept 7 would be a good time to let you practice while you and Trina are here. I will help the both of you become Pro's in no time and have plenty of scrap copper with new copper fittings that I will donate to the cause. Looking forward to the M & G and some teaching you both the correct way IMO to be the one of the best soft solderer in Hiram! Have a great weekend to the both of you.
-
2 pointsTomay-to/ tomah-to We WANT a whole pile of 'em... I guess I'd choose what we have here.... Trina's new "go-to" is the 867 brought to us by @buckrancher and Mrs buckrancher. And of course the C160.

2 pointsThough not mounted to a WH one of the guys here put one on the rear of one.The truck crane like wallfish pointed out is mounted to my wood splitter. That Red Oak round is 18" long. Not sure a WH could handle the weight it will lift but it works great. The black box at the right of the mast is the winch controls
-
2 pointsBoy this is a tough one. I would ether be to young or hadn't been thought of yet. Hum, not so shore that I was thought of. Your right you cant have just one. A 953 with all the ground engaging attachments and a C-160 with attachments to be used year-round.
-
2 pointsLook and angle A and G in the drawing. In the end the difference is 1/2 degree G fits at each end of the A totalling 179 degrees. A straight line is 180 degrees. Garry
