So I went today to look at the other goodie he was telling me he had! Well as a true HORSE-A-HOLIC would do, I seen it and had to have it. So I loaded this beautiful 1054 and sickle bar up and brought it home!!!

Here are some ice fishing sled ideas. I saw a nice sled built out of conduit at a bait shop out side of Traverse City, Mich. Just some ideas here. Check this one out...I want to make this.

Serial tag starts with 62... they only did that in 1962 and used the tags up in early 63, Flat front frame /front axle mount indicates 1962... and it has a Kohler. If original engine... you have a 702. If engine was replaced... could have been a 552 or 702.

I see no one mentioned to clean the surfaces so be sure to clean the surfaces well.

Map gas works too... but never heat the soldier, heat the copper and test swipe the soldier for melting point now and then.

Drove beside this “double Dodge delight” off and on for about 45 minutes today! Truck reminded me of a white version of Jim’s and that Dart—well... IT speaks for itself!

AHH!! OK. Copper is too expensive to buy for that, but if you have it lying around...excellent. Clean all joints to be soldiered with wire mesh or sand paper...inside and out. Coat with flux, the cleaned areas. With a butane torch, heat the joint from the bottom...it does not take a lot of heat As the joint becomes hot, touch the soldier to the top of the joint. Remove heat, the soldier will flow all around and inside the cleaned areas. You can wipe with a damp cloth, before the joint cools, to get a nice looking joint. If you have a lot of that copper, that works great for the runners for building an ice fishing sled. Just sayin'

Definitely a 702...1962. That serial number fall in-between my 502 and 702. The spec # 28626E is correct for the K161S 7 hsp Kohler. Also correct seat for the 702. Correct steering wheel also. I also think that mower deck is also right for that horse. You do need a belt guard to make it drive-able. The guard funnels the slack toward the engine drive pulley when you step on the clutch. This stops the transmission input pulley so you can shift the transmission with out grinding the gears. Nice find. edit...not the correct steering wheel...I stand corrected

This past Saturday, I added a new addition to the fleet and a new addition to the registry. Serial number #2336268. The motor dates to approx Sept 1954.

So I am here at the airport waiting to board a plane to Europe. Back to my birthplace for a little while. Looking forward to it but as always a little apprehensive about leaving the comfort and safety of home.

WHX24 - that is the type on the Charger - easy to deal with and very clear. Yes, the scrap yard is my favorite place to shop. I make metal sculptures and get lots of material from there as well as good useful tools and hardware. Thanks for all the responses! It really helps me out and I look forward to getting this thing mowing again!

Jim, Thank you and good description. That looks like what I need and I just ordered it! David

Put an ad in wanted classifies Moo... pretty popular model in RS here so someone is bound to have one. 753 and other models may work too. I think it should be mandatory every one here should have a 702!

.... clean clean clean . I preferred map gas myself and I always tried to heat the backside of fitting (where pipe goes into fitting) then moving to the front before adding the solder . The solder will follow the heat around and just for reference a 3/4” fitting should use about a 3/4” length of solder and a 1/2” fitting should take about a 1/2” length. Try not to over heat as the flux will burn turning black and making the solder not to take as good.

Hello David and You would have the 8 HP Briggs with what I call the ham can style filter...large variety. See if this is what you need. https://www.amazon.com/Briggs-Stratton-270528S-Filter-Element/dp/B0038U3FX8 RER's are a favorite of mine and we do have the manuals for yours along with most manuals for engines used on here should you need.

@stevasaurus has you covered Eric. When joining metal, tig, mig, flux core, stick wire, lead solder, silver solder, or brazing, cleanliness to the bare virgin metal is imperative. Be careful not to contaminate the clean surfaces with a dirty flame. The solder will go to the heat. Heat the fitting and draw the solder into the joint.

Ok thanks stevasaurus for all the info! I just got the old girl fired up and she ran darn good for not having the carb cleaned yet! no knocks and no smoke- yes I am aware that I will have to find that belt guard for it and put some new rubber on the front before it's drivable. Hopefully finding that belt guard doesn't prove to be a daunting task! I am very happy with the find thus far- especially for the price I paid for it!

Sure looks like a 702. Do you have the drive belt guard for the transmission? Necessary for the clutch to work. Click on the picture. Garry

These machines sat in the back room at the dealership for over 25 yrs, either traded in or left there by customers. It was time for them to get out in the sunshine, get a little clean-up and maybe find new homes.

Thanks guys and yes I feel very lucky to have picked this one up. Seems like it's been well maintained and taking care of overall.

Ya after some research I'm leaning towards them being simplicity or Allis chalmers. But definitely agree good cast wheel weights are good cast wheel weights regardless of brand.

Hi all! I just recently picked up this old tractor and I am not sure that it is a 854 as the owner claimed. I have seen pics of 854 gas tanks on here and the dash board looks different than mine. Please take a look at my pics and let me know what this might be and what the engine might be, and if I have the correct mower deck. it looks to be all original to me but even the engine plate was all painted over and faded. Thanks!

I have those same weights.... seem to remember finding info suggesting either Sears or Simplicity.... didn't apparently care enough to commit it to memory.... bottom line is they're 12 inch wheel weight... and when you need it... brand is irrelevant.

If you use an oxy/acetylene torch do not go to a neutral flame like you would use for brazing and gas welding, much too hot! A plumber's torch uses air and acetylene and is much cooler.

I didn’t use the pulley off the old motor. Not sure if they are same size but I am happy with my decision. Just got to cut in a few gauges and button it up for now. Grass needs mowing. 😂

You don't remove that bolt, just turn a 1/4 turn and just snug it when you close it.

Yes I agree - If I were to run a stack I would've routed beside the hood - not hacked a hole in it! To each his own, though. Eric, I'll have to dig through my pictures and see if I have any others of it. Paint is 50 years old, but the interior has been completely redone, as well as the running gear. Had a year-correct 283 in it for a few thousand miles, but the person who rebuilt it did a bad job and broke some rings. It wound up having to have a couple of cylinders sleeved. While it was back at the engine builders, we threw a known good 71 350 LT1 in it. It was only going to be in there temporarily, but its been in for about 6 years now. Has a 3 speed on the column w/ overdrive, 4.11 gears and averages 21 MPG running 75 with the factory AC blowing. It's a good driver. The original 327 in the Camaro was tired. We had a freshly bored 350 block and all the pieces to put it together but had been procrastinating due to the heat. My dad and I put it together last week and I installed it and had it running Wednesday evening. Drove it around just enough to make sure all was good with it before leaving out in the 106 degree heat on Friday. Richard, I didn't take any more pictures of it, but it did appear to be using all of the vari-drive setup.

Went to a classic car show and cruise in Vernon, Tx this weekend, and coupled with the show is a antique engine/ tractor show. This was one of two garden tractors that was there, the other being a CC 104. Has a predator swap and a stack out the hood (which I don't particularly care for) but was a neat tractor nonetheless. The owner wasn't around so I didn't get a chance to talk with him. Anyone know what model it is? I forgot to get a picture of the SBC powered Farmall Cub with zoomies on it, which was pretty cool. Here also is a picture of my buddy's 78 Little red express, my new-to-me 81 Porsche 928, my dad's 57 Chevy and my step-mothers 68 Camaro that we took. It was pretty hot, but an extremely fun event nonetheless.

Don’t see why not. Plenty of room in the tunnel. Just secure it away from the linkages. That was my plan on the wife’s.

....that looks like a C-series steering wheel. Should have a three spoke . It does however have the correct 1962 one year only starter/generator belt guard (flat ...no bump on s/g end) and the lift lever has detent not the dial adjust that came in 63 . Get a a good picture of the dealership sticker and see if it’s listed and/or add picture to the dealership list thread.

Are these the parts you are referring to? Glenn Petti one of the great Vendors here has them. Mower Deck: Washers & Spacer Bushings Fits on the idler slider bar: Parts #107675 & #107674 Two pair of Washers & spacer Bushings for basically all Wheel Horse mower decks from 1974 to 2008; for B & C-series and later 200 & 300-series tractor decks. A pair of metal washers to fit over the upper washer is included, for extra support, mounting instructions included. These allow the slider bar to move freely so the idler deck pulley maintains the correct belt tension for the spindles. $6 for the kit: (two metal washers, two upper plastic washers and two plastic Bushings). Plus, 1 oz = $3.50 shipping.

There is a station just up the road from me that just remodeled their store, new tanks and pumps, the whole 9 yards, with E0 90 octane added to every pump. I was so excited I pulled over, got out, and did a happy dance on the shoulder of US15.

Funny engine drain story. I replaced the engine in my 1267. I wanted to change the oil before the Steam Pageant. I looked and no drain pipe out the left side. Hmmm I can't believe I didn't put a pipe on it Oh Well ordered a 3/8" brass street elbow a pipe and cap. Go to put it in and it has an old oil level sensor in the block. Take it out and it's 1/2 " pipe. Go back to the store and get a bushing and finish up. Sitting at the show I look over at the tractor and there is a 3/8 square head plug on the right side of the engine already!

Your problem is that the pinion gear (that is on top of the fork gears) is under the "C" clamp. That pinion should be at an even height with the reduction gear (the large gear on the cluster gear shaft) and on top of the "C" clamp. The "C" clamp fits in the groove in the splined shaft. Below, you can see the "C" clip on the splined shaft...that pinion sits on top of the clip,,,not under it.

Two belt idlers are mounted ahead of the front tractor axle to redirect the belt back to the center double spindle pulley on the deck. This front assembly is often referred to as the mule or mule drive. Most decks have one idler on the deck with a few exceptions. The 37" SD two-blade deck has two idlers that could be flat or V-style depending if the drive belt has 4 sides like most common belts or 6-sided double-V belt. Some 60" decks also used a 6-sided double-V belt. The front idler assembly is part of the mower deck and some illustrations show it with the deck and others have it on a separate illustration/page.
