Little more work on the rj58

Knew you guys would come through! Given all the reasons stated above, I'm going to pass. The little bit of communication between the seller and I has resulted in me thinking he's........a bit crazy. Thanks for all of the replies fellas

Tire size, hood size, overall size, blah blah blah. I'd rather be do'n some surgery on Ed's punkin! Think it's all figured out and made some new bigger diameter tires for it. Just didn't want to make a big change at this point and the smaller tires look right for the pine model anyway. Seems like the proportions are more correct now. It doesn't really seem like there's much of a difference in these pics but looking at it, that little size change made a big difference in the overall appearance. To me anyway. Here's a few comparison pics. First 2 are the new larger tires here's the smaller first tire on the same frame here's the small tires with the smaller pine model Here's the bigger tire on the smaller pine. Now for finishing them and to get started on the fronts.

Me and Trina and the dog just came back from an hour or so snowshoeing in the forest. Temperature in the high 30s and nice bright beautiful sunshine. As we were coming back up the hill we scared up a GREAT HORNED OWL. THAT RIGHT THERE IS A MASSIVE BIRD

Thanks guy's for all the kind reply's. Tractor now runs like it was brand new. My next move is to find a snow blower and have it ready for next year. For now, we are looking forward to summer sunshine and mowing. Nothing beats a HORSE !!!!!!

Try telling Dad to get himself a smaller Kohler powered short frame tractor for using a push blade. (Anything from a 854,855,856,857 ect. or or even up to bigger stuff like a B80 or C series) Lots of choices but you don't need a big engine to push snow. Just makes it SO much easier to swap butts instead of attachments. Blow the snow and a quick clean up with the blade is nice and the blade is excellent for the small storms. How many times does the weatherman predict a big storm and 4 inches or less falls and vise versa. Swapping them back and forth is a pain. But, if you do need to do it, have a good look at it first when you can, figure out a way to "Quick Hitch it" for each one.

Pretty sure that been repainted. I would be skeptical at $1500 and would want to go over it with a fine toothed comb. So here at Red Square we don’t allow posting links to Craigslist, Ebay, auctions etc. I removed your Craigslist link but added a few pics to your post of the 314H.

Just got my new horses home.... 1959 RJ and a 1961 701....someone in this world needs a kick in the horsy stones for cutting up an original 701 hood. good thing I’ve got a mint front nose to weld in. gentlman in Ohio I bought these rusty gems from drove for wheel horse back in the 1970’s did the trucking from the plant in Indiana to Ohio....thought that was pretty awesome...come summer time I’m buying two 854’s off him....my collection keeps getting bigger. a question out there to everyone. I’ll need the wide starter generator cover and double pulley starter generator...eventually

Well I went to pick up my bolens ride master today and we'll I was there I got this little gem for $150. Wasnt planning on getting anything else. But the gentlemen said he felt it needed to go with me and i was not gonna disagree. Came with a solid deck and it's got a k-90 and solid seat pan!

Although nothing major, here are a couple more pics as promised of some of the recent odds and ends that I was able to knock out on this project in recent days. Stripped, cleaned, and primed the gear covers for the mower deck... Also had to do some repairs on the quadrant height control and plunger pin on the mower deck. First pics show a before and after of the original wallowed out holes where the pin engages in the height control, so I just made a repair by brazing up the holes and filing back to profile. Not perfect, but way better than when I started. To go along with that repair, I had to fabricate a new plunger pin on the lathe where it was worn from engaging in the quadrant. I still need to repair the hole in the deck wheel support assembly where the plunger rides in the tube. Not decided yet, but I may make a little partial sleeve guide as such and weld it into the tube to give the plunger a little better guide to hopefully minimize future wear. Next I fabricated a new idler arm assembly for the deck drive idler pulley as well as a new R.H. mounting plate and pin for the deck. I had to slightly modify the idler arm from the original by making the "barrel" part of the arm slightly oversize (O.D.) in order to accept a new bronze bearing as the original was not large enough in diameter to allow reaming for the bearing installation and still have some wall left. In hindsight I probably should have made it even a little larger yet so I could drill and tap in a grease zerk since this has always been a common wear area for me, but after finishing this one just decided it wasn't worth making another one. Maybe when this one wears out, I'll do that for the next guy . I did use an Oilite bearing so it does have some lubrication. The pulley is a NOS one that I found on the auction site. And finally, cleaned and primed the 6594 pulley for the deck. I installed new ball bearings in the pulley, but ran into a slight issue with the casting as the original bearings must have spun slightly in the pulley casting causing some very slight wear as the bearings did not tightly press into the pulley. They were a snug fit, not at all sloppy, but also not a tight press fit. I tried some Loctite 620 sleeve retainer that I had on hand, but it never quite seemed to set up (too old I assume), so I just fell back on the old JB weld and hopefully with the bolt in place nothing will move. Right now the bearings seems good and tight. That's about all for now. I guess my request for ideas to modify the deck hanger assembly that I posted in the implements section didn't get any results so I guess that I'm on my own on that one. Oh well, didn't hurt to ask I guess.

What do you guys think of this deal? It seems a bit high to me.. When I was younger, my friend and I did a somewhat "restore" on his grandads Wheel Horse mower. Really just a good paint job. I don't know what model it was but it was old. Metal seat old. Anyway, I have always wanted one since then. I would love to know what you guys think of this price, and the model in general. Thanks

Then use a three jaw puller to remove the drive pulley. don't forget the Allen set screws.
  16. 3 points
That’s the pto disc. remove the four bolts and retainers, disc may be tight but will slide off. The bearing race can be difficult at times. Use heat and pb blaster in key way.

Only thing is I would still keep is the 42" bucket size as it's easier to load less of the heavy things but it can still carry more of the light stuff like mulch, brush or something. The steering stuff on the tractor can always be worked out, especially if you have the tools and skill to build the FEL.

to the Matt. The 314H is a great garden tractor. The 14 HP Kohler Magnum with the Eaton 1100 transmission is a very capable machine that could handle any attachment except a 60" deck. It appears this is a well maintained tractor with many years left. The price is high for my area, but may be fair in your area. Other members closer to you will surely give some advice. The fact is, no new tractor for this price will out perform or out last this tractor.

Recently picked up a near complete 61 db and although it was repowered, began the trouble-shooting process and replacement parts search. Many thanks to Jabelman for technical assistance and providing a key element to fitting this engine correctly. See the main obstacle is carburetor base. Shame, the prior owner replaced the original engine and didn't keep the sheet metal, not the hood bracket, or even the carb/offset! Just tossed all So here's a few pictures of the progress made. The old recoil & shroud were toast. I rebuilt a pull and rustled up a vertical 7hp shroud. Just enough to to test for spark. Removed the drive belts. (This thing has no neutral) engine does have spark! Thank God! Magnetron Ignition are amazing! The whole unit will be gently disassembled and put back together as per the manual. I have just enough of the implements to hurt myself! Lol It's no Wheel Horse by no means, but a challenging and rewarding endeavor...... Regards, Oldman

Carb cleanings and adjustments just weren't cutting it. The old Charger 12 was running like crap. New carb and gaskets sent straight to the door. 1 year warranty The shaft for the choke needed to be changed. Notice the tape on the left side of the carb!! Its there for a reason. That little BB is spring loaded and when you remove the shaft it fly's out, hits you in the eye and causes temporary blindness. Needless to say that BB is imposable to find once you've lost track of it. I use thread lock when reinstalling the screws. Runs like a top. choose files...---------Click to choose files.url

No need to press it on. Start the engine, let it idle shoot some wd40 on some 240 grit wet and dry paper and run it along the shaft. That cleans it up real nice.

I'm don't know much about the 175 but I'm going to call and find out. He told me in passing one day that he was going to sell it because he had bought a zero turn and I told him to let me know I might be interested. Thanks for all of the replies. I'll keep updating as this project progresses.

I'll say no, first off it would be more of a pain to remove the blower housing from it's frame than swapping to the correct blade and frame...but with another style/brand blade and a lil fabrication it would be doable but IMO just not worth the headaches and hassle. Here's a few pictures hope these help put things in perspective... I had a 520xi with both a single stage thrower and the 48" snow blade the xi series was a bit faster foe implement change overs than the classic series IMO.

Shoot pb blaster in the Allen holes and keyway. Let sit and clean up the crank shaft for a smooth pull while removing the pulley. The pulley is made of cast and will break if forced. if the pulley breaks let me know I have several.

Well that was unnecessary but appreciated, your stock size was close enough. This double set of disks is going to be working in my garden not setting pretty in a show. But as a Tool & Die maker I like the fact that it's going to be the exact size it once was. I did measure it with a large set of digital calipers....lol Thank you for your attention to detail, so far I have been VERY happy with the decals I have received from you. Again thank you......Pics to follow

D's have the weak link coupling the motor to the pump. Not knowing the condition of your D I would opt for the 8 speed.

If yo have the three point and a plow to fit it I would say the "D" is the way to go! Hearing the big 16 thumper at work is music to my ears.

Don’t know about the 301 but the 212 I put in my 606 roller is a monster. It starts on the first pull every time and has plenty of grunt, even with the upsized engine pulley I installed. I had to massage the sides of the grill to clear the air cleaner but no cutting was required.

Not sure what part of our state you are in, but here in the mountains there aren't a lot of Wheel Horses. Scarcity can command a higher price, but there is a limit to that and I feel the seller is way over the limit on this one. You may want to take a look at it and disregard the awful spray paint job, seeing how well it performs. If it runs well, transmission and lift work smoothly and is in good mechanical condition I would say it is probably worth $ 750 to $ 800. If it has been properly maintained you will be able to get several more decades of use from it.

No reason to beat around the bush on this. My little inner perfectionist nerd is screaming: RUN FORREST RUN!!! It looks like a very rough lick of paint, with not much (if any) focus on detail or quality. If that's a pointer to how the mechanical side of thing are, ..................................... In my book, a mint really really nice low hour 314H with perfect original paint and RD deck, can't even come close to that price tag. I know some dream about it, but let's be realistic. Doesn't matter how much of a WH fanatic you are, that thing is very very far from a 1500$ tractor. Looks a lot more like a 500$ worker to me. 1500$ should put you up for some of the nice and rare stuff if that's your thing, or it could put you behind the wheel of something bigger and way more decent than that. Just my

The Eaton 1100s are strong hydros, but they do have a quirky warm up. In cold weather, some require as much as a 10 minute warm up before the lift will operate. I have four tractors with this hydro and some lift immediately and some require the warm up. Toro actually recommends a 10 minute warm up on all of them.

I have both blowers, blades, front end loader etc and they all have their place. For a light snow under 8" or so the blade does it well and quickly. For a very deep snowfall the little wheel horse would have trouble pushing a blade so the blower works better. For the odd time we get wet sloppy snow sometimes it ends up being a bit of both. Always best to have multiple tractors, Wheel Horses in particular love to travel in herds. Here is my lineup from 2015 Cleat

Standard bore for k341 is 3.750 Ive rebuild countless k series in this shape. yes the k341 is worth Rebuilding. In my opinion the k341 and m16 were the best single cylinder engines ever built. bore the cylinder, most likely the crank will need to be turned, grind the valve seats and plain the head. Replace with quality parts and your engine, at least in my area, should be worth 1000.00.
