Update on Scottie...he no longer has the NG tube (they removed it this morning), his diet was changed from clear liquids to as tolerated, he started physical therapy, played a game, rested and he had many visitors. Here is a picture of Scottie sitting up in the medi-chair for the first time since the accident. When a person starts therapy they only sit up for a total of 60 minutes. But as many of you know Scottie had to prove the nurses wrong and he sat up today for a total of 80 minutes. Tomorrow he will start sitting up on the edge of the bed and learning how to transfer. Please pray that he continues to have the strength and determination to push through PT/OT. We are looking at Wednesday or Thursday for possible discharge.

No need for a blower here for the past three years. I am tempted to take the blower off the 520 and put a plow on to take advantage of that nice warm heated cab. But, I'm sure this action would bring on a blizzard.

Thanks for the updates. So great to hear positive news regarding Scottie’s recovery so far. A young person in good health with a desire to recover fully will make great progress towards that end. Positive mindset is very important and a dose of Divine intervention is super helpful too! At our teen Christmas Party on Friday night, one of our youth leaders had brought his little kids. He relayed this story to me yesterday about his 8 year old daughter was very attentive to the things that went on throughout the party. On Saturday evening at the dinner table right before her dad was going to pray over the food she said, “Daddy please don’t forget to pray for Scottie and Bryan for healing!” Well said young lady.

So I have two 520's Since I don't name my tractors I just call them 520 #2 & #3. 520 # 1 is in good health. Not so much for 2 & 3! #2 is a 1996 73501 Overall decent shape except for the Onan. Starts and runs but smokes and has a nasty smelling exhaust. Fouls out new plugs and dirties fresh oil in an hour if it doesn't burn it all first. Bad rings I suspect. 9 pin connector has been taken out completely but not the worse job of splicing back together. All gauges work as should except for hour meter I suspect which says 454 if you can believe it. Transmission is good yet but it and the whole tractor needs a bath. It has the older stick on style floor board and a different steering wheel from #3. I probably overpaid for this tractor but more than made up for it on #3. Came with in decent shape SS tall chute blower. Its primary duty was to get left at the cabin for snow removal duty. #3 is a 1996 73502 Has good PPG20 motor, Starts and run with a little smoke & surging but goes away when warmed up. I suspect the coil has been replaced as it is not mounted down in the motor but up on top with a relocation bracket. The bad is the left rear axle and hub need replacing. Hub was loose and wallowed and then proceeded to chew on the axle. I have it temp. repaired with a song and a prayer just to get it to limp around the yard. None of the gauges work, tie rod ends are loose and axle spindle end are wallowed out bad. 2400 hrs on a non working meter. This tractor has the newer style buttoned on floor boards & a real ungly seat! This tractor I actually made $75 after I sold the deck and a blade that came with it so a FREE tractor. We like free! My plan is to cannibalize one to make the other one sound and my thought was to take the motor off 3 and drop it in 2. The carcass would be then parted out. It was suggested to put a 16 HP Kohler thumper in it or a 22 hp Predator in the donor tractor. The problem with that is it would take more to $$ to do that then what it is worth. Now I'm on the fence about which one to cannibalize? May be do a transmission swap instead?

My lips are 🤐Jim about the goings on in the shop! I need to have you guys over when we can “pretend” like we are working on something and instead focus on discussion about Diesel GT’s, 26-12-12’s, and Super-C’s! Dan always brings with him a great sense of humor. Jim was grumbling to him about the mess that my shop was when Dan says, “Would you like to try running heat in my shop?” Then Jim said something that still makes me chuckle every time I think of it, “That’s so true Dan, maybe if Jack didn’t have all these Cubs cluttering up his work space we could get something done! I can’t turn around without tripping over something yellow and white!”

I'm close to retirement too and I buy tools left and right. Need a sideline to fill up my days and I'm going to sell them one at a time on CL. Yep, sittin on my porch waiting all day for somebody to come by and pay me for a screwdriver. It's the only way I'll have someone to talk to.

So the first k181 I stuck on 552 was a dud. Smoked like a freight train on startup. A friend gave me a k181 off a 1975 cub. I changed oil pan and set it up for the wheel horse. Found stuck valve easy fix because he couldn't get it running. Bore looks awesome std bore with cross hatches slightly visible. Got it running no smoke runs good. So I got rid of the green and got carried away with paint. Umm only did top side of fenders for now. Want to brighten it up a bit because I do plow peoples drives in winter time. I put temp cover over vr from a Chinese vr so I can paint the Delco cover

Scottie is exhausted but we started therapy and we are making plans to go home (date yet to be set). But first we need to make sure his GI tract is working properly and he eats. They started his oral pain medication regime today and we will see how that goes. He still has his lovely grin and attitude...boy did I miss that!

Howdy there Eric, That generator might still be good. You can only tell by testing it. My suggestion..... Lick your fingers, apply to the contacts and have Trina give it a good spin. When you come back down off the ceiling you can get good money for a working generator. Oh, and take pictures, too. I wouldn't miss that circus for the world! Wink, wink! LOL...! Cheers! Dave

If I had time Chris that's what I would do. Frame off teardown and taking the best of both. Maybe even doing a @dclarke 520 look alike job on one. Trouble is I don't have the time with 1055 project and others well underway. Also don't have the room with just one service bay open and I need to get her back on duty asap. Simple motor swap might be the best option right now. I plan on doing a teardown of the smoker just to see what it might need. Who know maybe a inexpensive Onan re-ring job. Did I just use inexpensive and Onan in the same sentence?!?!

got my plow mounted today seems like the last few years i have not needed it wife said may as well put it on and it will scare the snow away again this year. 90 pounds rear wheel weights and all tires loaded. it does a great job! the last 4 yrs here in ohio we haven't had hardly any snow to speak of . the 90's and early 2000's we had plenty of snow but lattley none it was almost 50 degrees here today. i can remember yrs ago we had plowable snow already and cold as hell. maybe it's globile warming ?? i have a single stage snowblower i bought 4 yrs ago for this 857 started to restore but it just sitting in a pile now don't really have a use for it. not enough snow to use it not like it used to be 15 - 20 yrs ago

I recently took some Craftsman tools to my local Ace Hardware (also a Craftsman dealer). They were warrantied with no questions asked. If you happen to still have a K-Mart, they carry Craftsman tools also.

Rebuttal.....Mike when you are as close to retirement as I am you ain't gonna buy a new tinning hammer to replace the one you lost at the last job either, sides when you run into as many hang nails in a sliver wizzard's shop..... you need a claw! Jack ... don't you dare tell them about my trademarks or tell them about me putting fitings on a 10" duct instead of the 12"! @Achto finally shows up to supervise and I get side tractored about tractors and I lose what little concentration I have! Who the he double hockey sticks can concentrate on the job when guys are mumbling about diesels, 26" tires and C-195's????? Oh then Ritchie calls and i gotta run the bull with him...under alot of stress here!

I think swapping the engine would be a lot less work that swapping the transaxle. They both look nice otherwise so parting out could be quite doable. Thanks for telling us your

There actually speedex fenders. When I got the tractor I found this set hanging on the wall. So I grabbed them and I did a little wet sanding on the one. Surprisingly with a little time I'll be able to blend the patina and make them look like they belong with it!

If this engine is for a generator, I'm going to say no it's not for any tractor. Generator engines will have a tapered PTO end on the crank shaft instead of a keyed shaft. This is not to say that you couldn't purchase a taper shaft to keyed shaft adaptor & use the engine in a tractor. The adaptors can be found on ebay in 1" or 1 1/8" for around $60.

Progress on this has been slow the last few weeks, I finished the linkages for the brake pedals, replaced the front wheel bushings with bearings and mounted those tires. My tie rods were shot so I picked up a new set from Lowell, I also added a front support bushing to the lower steering shaft and replaced the bushing in the rear lower steering shaft support. I cut the Tecumseh gas tank bracket apart and adapted it to fit the Kohler, got most of the bodywork done on the fender pan and have been working on mounting this seat pan. Hopefully in the next week or so I'll be able to take the seat pan to have new cushions made. The recoil on the K181 needed several new pieces to get it back into shape, boy I wish I knew the trick to rewinding that spring and getting that thing put back together. That was a chore.

Somebody's kid was doing bird circles in the asphalt parking lot down the street. I have run tires 20 years and had 3/4 of the tread left. They died from dry rot setting inside the garage.

I recently took them out of a K341 .... had a 'rattle noise' thought sure it was the balance gears and sure nuff they were quite sloppy -- but turned out they wernt the 'rattle' - it was a sloppy rod!! Luckily the shaft was still OK, new rod and OK. So back to removing the B gears, I can NOT tell a BIT of difference without them!

Swapping motors sounds like a plan Jim, if you need it going now. You can always hang onto the other one for parts if your plan is make one out of two.
  37. 2 points
Jim, you never know you may get lucky with a re-ring job on Onan #2 and you wouldn't have to part out #3...funny you mention you dont name them since I the 2 I still have came from the same dealer, Fred 1 and 2 would be my 520s
  38. 2 points
Sounds like a good project. Me personally I would probably just start with tearing them down and assembling one solid machine. Then I would look at what's left and make the decision from there.

Definitely. Square Hood with square fenders. That looks pretty good.

Yup. I went. The large NOS sign sold for $3,100.00. The smaller sign sold for $1,050.00. The bucket everyone is talking about was actually an NOS loader bucket that would be used for maybe mulch. Had the spikes wired to it and never installed. The manuals went for a good price. I was able to snag a nice 1957-present large manual. Plus the gray binder which I had never seen before. Many other binders/manuals that I had never seen before. 12 tractors I think that were in less than good shape but salvageable. Many other parts that went for fair prices.

Trina made a bit more progress today. I cleared off the work bench so she could wire brush the rest of the exterior of the transmission. We brought it in to the cellar workshop and set it by the big huge wood stove for a while. This evening she painted it. Maybe soon it'll start looking like a tractor.

Wow that is really good news Lowell... Cindy, being the medical person she is, thought he might be in the for many more weeks! This is really good news! A few good things coming his way but don't let him in on our surprises... Thanks for keeping us updated but now we will expect you to do so untill he is playing soccer or piloting a tractor again!

Cider vinegar will remove the rust as well. Mild acid. Use gravel, BBs, screws, nuts and bolts ect. to loosen the big stuff up quickly if there is any.

I have used this unusual method for years and its always been extremely effective. No chemicals no noise. Takes a little thinking and setting up but once you have the system set up , then every other time its cake. I have a thread about it here somewhere. Its just plain electrolysis. I first do the inside of tank then the outside.
