I really must stop the Craigslist wheel Horse Alerts I have set up. As I have stayed with the 400 series all these years as I visited the Big Show I often wondered where such clean and great condition 520 are found. A recent craigslist local alert and I found the 1996 Anniversary 520H posted. Only 1 pic was shown but I knew what it was. The recent inherited owner placed it with his local SCAG Dealer to sell against the price of a new SCAG zero turn. Posted at $850 I offerd $725. No choice after it was accepted....100 mile trip to pick up. The tractor had sat unused but the fuel was emptied prior. Hours show 1000 hours but based on the condition and appearance its very hard to believe. Tires look original and the paint is just perfect...even on the deck. The onan sounds fine, idles smooth and runs up to max rpm .....the deck engaged is smooth and quiet. All the dash lights function. The hydro ran well but the column motion lever at the max up foward was not right ....almost reaching straight up vertical. the forward speed was not as fast as it should be but I ran really steep hills all over the property and the speed never faded. I have a 416H with the column motion lever to compare and will take a look at the linkages and such. They washed the tractor at the shop but the original dash decal was lost so they dropped the price to $700. Of course I know the decals are available. Here are a few quick pics.

Kev, gotta say that I’m loving that little girl and have never met her! You can tell in her pictures that she has a sweet spirit, but loves to have fun! Your girls will be like Emory, they will love the show once they go and it will be a yearly tradition afterward. Doing this stuff with our kids is what makes it all worth it!

It seems that in this new modern era there is a chance that maybe someday December 7th, PEARL HARBOR just might be erased and forgotton by future generations. Dam shame that is. To all the men and women that were there on that fatefull day rest easy, most are gone now, old age and time has taken its toll. I am here to beat the drum of rememberence. Thank you for your service and I shall never forget your sacrifice. I guess only because my father was there serving aboard the USS PENNSYLVANIA. I hope this day does not become extinct in the minds of future generations.

The transplant is complete and running like a top. Used her move some firewood today. The recap. Project tractor. Late 60s Raider 10 Donor tractor. Mid 70s C 160 hydro. Used the engine, wiring harness and gauges. Engine gaskets and carb came from I Save Tractors. Front tires are 3 rib 4/8 Dstones from Miller tire. 4 tire tubes and a case of RV antifreeze from Tractor Supply. Loaded all four tires. Two link tire chains came Ebay. And a few other items came from came stock room and the bone yard. Remember don't throw out anything, you might need it someday.

All Fixed!!!! Pulled the carb apart and found some black colored crud in the needle and jets. It did not come from my fuel line as its brand new translucent blue line. The inside flapper on the check valve is black though. If you use one be sure to clean it 1st. Good lesson here. She also got a new set of NGK plugs too as the others were totally black and fouled. I did come across something awesome though. Found some welch plugs on top of carb with that looked like needles. Removed the plugs and sure enough, adjustable low mix screws. It's my lucky day for once HA. About a 1/2 a turn to each and she starts and idles much better than before. Thanks EPA! 22hp Predator Running After Carb Clean & Low Adjustment Also installed a new set of Tri-Ribs. It's like having power steering now. These things are AWESOME!

Growing up with a 1966 IH Scout as our families’ primary worker, I have a special place in my heart for those little trucks. Rarely do you see them in decent original shape for sale here in Wisconsin but this 1965 version showed up recently. I’m trying to figure out a way that I can buy it... Merry Christmas to me! Then I wouldn’t see my wife for about two weeks. After two weeks I might begin to see her out of my left eye... Non original wheels of course and late model bucket seats and radio but the claim is little to no rust. This one has the dual stick transfer case and the flip down windshield. Notice the u-hook on the hood that catches the latch on the top of the window. These were originally designed to compete directly with the ever popular Jeeps That came to fame during and after the Second World War. They were spartan but tough as nails. This one has a rebuilt original 152 CID international 4cyl. With 93hp! That won’t win any races! These were ALL WHEEL drive though with lockers front and back, almost impossible to get them stuck with the right tires. Its fun to dream!!! Maybe one day...

Yes we need to keep teaching this in school and remembering. Thank you to all that served. My dad caught the end of WWII in the security force in Germany. My step dad joined the Merchant Marines at 16 right after Pearl Harbor. The Merchant Marines while not true military lost more supply ships than the US Navy. They are somewhat forgot hero’s along with all the Military Veterans who are truly each hero’s

@stevasaurus @wallfish @pfrederi I spent some time today to remove and clean up the engine pulley as much as could be done to it. Turns out it is too worn to use. Also was quite a bit more rusty than I expected. I ground down the rust and of course the belt was sitting even more deeply in the pulley. The rear pulley on this tractor isn't right so I'm replacing all 3. I've ordered a replacement 3" for the front and a 4" for the transmission, both 5L/ B groove size. As for the brake/clutch linkage and rods... They too were ummmmmm Mickey mouse engineered. What was happening was the rod connecting the brake drum to the clutch/ pivot was too short. When you push the clutch pedal on these models the brake is engaged as well. One motion. Because of the brake rod being too short I had nowhere near the amount of free play I needed to set the park brake, and also the belt idler would not move down enough to allow the installation of the 1" shorter belt as discussed in previous posts. I took a rod from a B/C series and straightened it in the vise. Then using the old rod as a guide I bent the new longer rod to the right position. It took a fair amount of experimentation to get the pedal in the right place and get the park brake adjusted. Here's a couple of pics. One showing the brake engaged. One not. I also threw a set of used but better than what was there tie rods on.

Just my opinion, which that and a dollar will buy you a cup of coffee, but I would try to buff a tractor that looks that good before I tried to oil it up. I bought a harbor freight buffer and have had good luck buffing tractors. The paint is a lot tougher that automotive paint and won't burn near as easy. I had some tractors that looked like new after I buffed them. Good luck that is a nice looking 520. I have some nice ones but the 96 anniversary one has eluded me. good luck eric j

Found this today about Hollywood types who signed up after Pearl Harbor actually saw action not just to make movies... I worked with a guy years ago who was in the army stationed in Hawaii in the late 30s (Coast defense artillery). They drilled with wooden rifles rarely fired their big guns ..too expensive. https://www.msn.com/en-us/movies/celebrity/16-hollywood-stars-who-saw-real-life-combat/ss-BBQzu5s?li=BBnb7Kz

And people wonder why I don't have cable TV anymore. If I wanted to know what a given person or organization or agency thought, I would ask them. I don't need them telling me what to think. Best we can do as individuals is to keep reminding people of the things that we have experienced in the past that led to create who and what we are today. Some were good. Some were bad. It's absolutely fantastic and I try as hard as I can to be positive minded as often as possible. That said, the negative things in my past have certainly shaped a portion of my being. Be forgiving. But never forget.

Just for info purposes for this thread, the carb vent (for atmospheric pressure) will release any fuel or air pressure inside the carb bowl so a check valve can't cause or hold any pressure in the bowl. This is the vent which was flowing fuel out when the bowl over filled so it definitely isn't clogged. Restriction of flow from a check valve could cause more pressure on the inlet side from the fuel pump. Glad to see you got her going.

Starting to look like something now. Seat base painted and fitted. High back seat that originally came on the Black Horse. Cleaned up not bad after a wipe with white spirit. After this photo was taken. Pair of rear lights that have been on the parts shelf for a few years. I'll wire them up when I do the wiring.

Thank you for posting this thread! My cousin Paul (as many of you know) is a now retired 20 year veteran of the US Navy. He was a Riverine from 2006-12 and served two tours in the Sandbox. His next station was at the Marine base Camp Smith just up the hill from Pearl/Hickam. We got the opportunity to visit him in 2015, ironically only a few months after Sparky was there and posted all those great pics. Because of Paul’s connections, he was able to get us into the 74th remembrance ceremony at Pearl Harbor seeing that we were there on December 7th, 2015. It was very surreal to stand on the harbor opposite the USS Arizona memorial at the exact minutes 74 years later where this tragic event took place. There were about 1500 people there for the ceremony and we ended up being only a couple of rows behind one of the living survivors of the Arizona! He must’ve been about 92 years old and yet you could see the emotion, pride, and love for America just eminating from him. I knew at that time most of these men would be gone within a couple of years based on their old age. It was one of my great privileges to be there in that place on such a date. I try my best to educate my children about the true history of the United States of America. We have an audio dramatization of the story of Squanto and the Pilgrims that we listen to every year during Thanksgiving week. We often talk of the sacrifices made by so many throughout our nations history that give us the freedoms that we enjoy today. That is why I shouldn’t be surprised when last spring, @Coulter Caleb choose to memorize and recite FDR’s Pearl Harbor speech. In preparation for it, we spoke about the tragic event, read books about it, watched the films, and studied the Presidents actual speech. Caleb understood the seriousness of the speech that he was giving. He was applauded by his peers and adults alike. It is my sincere desire to pass along to the next generation the importance of our history. These events shaped our nation and we must never forget the success and failure of our past! Thank you to all who have served!

I got to go to Hawaii during the summer after my 8th grade year in 1976. I still vividly remember the visit to the USS Arizona Memorial. Even at that “young and dumb” age, I was moved to tears by all of the names on the wall, by the enormity of that ship, the knowledge that so many were still down in that ship, and the sight of the ship still “bleeding” oil. I will never forget the sacrifices made by so many for this country!

I would start by popping off the valve cover and checking the tappet clearances. Should be done every so often anyway. Specs should be in the manual. Not an expert on this motor but I don't think there is a comp. release on these. I do know a fine looking when I see one tho! I would love to put one of those engines in a 520 chassis.

Scott Melburg has been doing this for several years in the school he teaches at in Indiana. Several Wheel Horse tractor owners have donated tractors to his student run club that has restored tractors donated to them. Tractors owners need to connect with their local school corporations to determine interest in accepting or receiving a donated tractor for use as educational tools.

Fixed the headlights. It was a reluctant switch. Cleaned it up and it works fine. Replaced the incandescent bulbs with LEDs. For good measure, added an LED light bar and harness with rare earth magnet mounts. All items sourced from Amazon. I have some matte black adhesive vinyl I may try on the chute to help cut the reflective glare.

A 1 milliamp draw will show full battery voltage on a voltmeter set to VOLTS because the meter is wired in series between the negative post and the negative battery cable and is measuring voltage. Not the conventional way to use a voltmeter but it works and you can not damage the meter using it this way. Garry

Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable at the battery. Keep the key in the OFF position. Connect at test light or voltmeter to the negative battery post and the cable you just removed. If no short is present the light will not illuminate or a voltmeter will show 0 battery voltage. If a short is present the light will illuminate or a voltmeter will show battery voltage. Start disconnecting items one at a time and reconnect until you get the light out or 0 volts. When that happens you have found the problem circuit. Let us know what you find. Garry

So my job has me traveling often and one of my "worksites" is Pearl Harbor. Been there maybe 15 times but never had the time or was with other folks who had already been and didn't want to go again to the Arizona Memorial. I just got home today from a 3 weeker so I had a couple Sundays off and was alone for part of the time so I went. I am so glad I did!! I'm not a museum guy and if I'm in one I usually breeze right thru.....but at the Arizona I spent almost 4 hours taking it all in....the movie....the boat trip...the memorial...the museum...and the grounds. They open at 7am and only have a limited number of tickets per day so I was there bright and early at 6:40am and I was still a 100 or so deep in line and when 7:00 came there were probably 400 people behind me!!. I got my ticket for the first showing of the movie which then leads directly to the boat to take you to the memorial. At the memorial the first thing you notice is the smell of oil which is still today (after 74 years) leaking slowly out of the battleship. You can see it coming up and then hitting the surface and quickly spreading out. Getting there early meant the water was calm and I could see a whole lot more than you would if the water was disturbed by waves. The feeling out at the memorial was somber and there was no loud talking, screaming kids and no one yakking on their cell phones....it was a very respectful crowd. There was a tour guide who was full of great stories about the Arizona both before and after the attack. It was interesting to learn that Elvis Presley was a huge contributor to the Arizona Memorial project! Of course I remembered my camera...here's a few pics (and two selfies....I gotta learn to smile). Mike............
