The girls and I were accompanied by my niece on a ride to grab some walnuts. After we crush them in the driveway, we’ll bury small piles in the field and hope for some seedlings come spring time!

Did my annual 3/12 horror scene. Went with a big old Homelite 450 for the amputation duty this year. The kids always enjoy it.

Saw this in front of a house nearby. It had potted flowers arranged on it. I kind-of know the guy so I stopped and asked about it. It fired up on 2nd pull and he said I could take it around the yard. We made a deal and I drove it home. I think it's a Ride-O-Matic and the hood / grill are very well home made. Engine is a '79 Briggs. Trans is 50's Borg T3, a 3 spd that was used in Studabakers and Willys. Belt management is a little sketchy with a clutch rigged off of the orig. shift lever which I fiddled with and got to work better. I'm guessing slim chance on finding any orig. tin for this so one thought I have for this is to fab / find / mod a 30's looking waterfall grill and rounder hood and maybe front fenders and headlights on left and right of grill. ebinmaine saw this yesterday and after hearing my vision he had an apt phrase for it that I cannot exactly remember, but I'll paraphrase and say it's ZZ Top meets Green Acres. It came with a trailer and I loved the 1/2" dia spoked wheels as soon as I saw it. Unfortunately, the wheels are done in. eb got me thinking, and now I'm considering trying to salvage the wheels by finding 2, 18 x 4 steel motorcycle wheels for rim doner. Trailer also has stake pockets, tilt mechanism and brakes that engage on tire tread. I have a couple other projects in the works and one more that's in planning stage. I'll post some pics and progress / thoughts one of these days soon.

I use IH red on my tractors, single stage acrylic enamel. The color is pretty close.

I agree with this. I try my hardest to teach that to my kids. I used the same rules my dad and grandad did with me. I had them sit right there with me and helped them build there first tractor, minibikes and go karts. Now they understand them and appreciate them. And it's super cool when u see them kinda bragging to there friends, oh no we didn't buy this me and my dad built it.

I stopped at the local Fleet Farm on my way home & purchased a Regitar RUC15 coil, sold there under the Calco name. This coil fits A LOT of different tractors and auto's. Surprisingly enough it was also the cheapest coil that they had (this is never my luck), all of the 6v coils were almost twice the price. To satisfy my curiosity I checked the resistance across the primary coil on both ignition coils. The coil that was on the tractor has 1.2 Ohms of resistance, the new coil has 2.7 Ohms of resistance. After the new coil was installed I put in about 30min of seat time. I'm happy to report that the tractor ran like a champ, not one hick up, miss or bogging issue the whole time. It also held a charging voltage of 14.3vdc. Happy tractor - Happy boy!! I was so happy that I decide to make supper for the wife. After discovering that we were fresh out of Ramen noddles, this planned changed to going out. Took her to Mac & Don's Steak House & let her go nuts on the dollar menu. Thanks so much for your help everybody!!!!

Hey Pullstart! That's some mighty flat country out your way in Michigan. Looks like good ground, too. I'll bet you would love to have some of those rocks and boulders EBinMaine has to contend with. I'll bet Eric dreams about flat ground like yours when he slumbers (he never sleeps - I heard he only gets drowsy and always has one eye open). Happy Halloween everyone! Cheers! Dave

My first B-100 I did with rattle cans. If I remember correctly I used about 5 cans of primer and 10-15 cans of red (I typically put on three coats). At about $5.00/can, thats at least $75.00. After 30 days, the paint still had not cured and I had to remove it and start over. I then switched to acrylic urethane and an HVLP spayer. I will never go back to rattle cans for the horses. However, no matter whether you use rattle cans or a spray gun, USING PROPER BREATHING PROTECTION IS A MUST. Your life may depend on it. You may not have any ill effects immediately, but long term damage to your lungs begins as soon as you inhale any paint, especially acrylics.

My daughter was in college 100miles away. With a bit of help and advice from me,,she was able to change out a fuel filter [railmounted under the car] and was soon on her way. It totally impressed some of the college men who happened by. She is currently seeking a higher degree and driving a 1979 Buick but wants a truck.....There you go!

You are doing it right! My daughter has a female friend who had a flat tire and didn't know what to do.Erin changed the tire.It was like magic to her friend. No big deal mom showed me how to change tires years ago.Mom is pretty handy to.You can't teach them everything but it is surprising what they pickup watching you.

At a show 2 weeks ago. A young girl was driving her family Craftsman pulling a trailer with a friend. They rode around for hours on end and finally the machine just stopped...It would run but nor move. The girl was just crying and sobbing. Her friend tried to comfort her to no avail. I looked underneath to see the belt off the transmission pulley and shredded. Another GT buddy was going to help me get her machine back to their family spot. We both explained that the belt was no big deal, but she said "dads going to kill me"! We told her that wouldn't happen. The girls mother came to the location and we told her the belt came off and was shredded, and she said, "we have that problem all the time" ! When the father arrived he was very rough with the little girl asking "what did you do"? My friend stuck his neck out and said, "she was just driving around with her friend having a good time"! I hope the guy didn't give his daughter too much lip, as she didn't cause the problem!

This statement is true with almost every restoration/freshen ups. I do all most all of my own work, machining, body work, painting, and rebuilding. The cost of every one of my resto's goes over the sale value of the tractor and usually over my projected budget. Not a big deal to me cause my tractors aren't going any where. If you're keeping the tractor then it's up to you how much you wish to spend on it. I've seen some really nice spray can paint jobs. Just take your time & try to stick with one brand of primer & paint from start to finish, this tends to help avoid issues. If your painting the tractor to try to make a little more cash on a sale, then put it back together. You'll spend more cleaning it up than you'll ever get back out of it.

Those look like black walnuts. Are you sure you want black walnut trees in your yard?!?!?!? I have one in my yard & every other year I have to clean up after the darn thing. The pic below was after my first cleaning last year. By the time the tree was empty this 8' pick up box trailer was level full (yes to the top of the racks) with wall nuts. "Sell them" my friends have said, well if they were worth 5cents a ton I'd be happy to. Instead I take them out to my nephews woods & dump them. In fact, last year was the last time that I will have to castrate my lawn. That tree will be history as soon as the ground freezes this year.

Looking at the first pics and the description, I need to add that she wasn’t ashamed in the pictures, she was trying to keep her nose warm. We had a great time in the garage, and I was thrilled that she was interested in the way the belt guard aids in the belt/clutch design, etc. Our 1/4 mile test drive to pick up walnuts was fun, she kept saying “this thing is so jumpy now!” I know that they know I love ‘em, the random hugs tell me so!

I think the hole that you are referring to is the one for the cam shaft pin. When you install the cam this pin is driven into that hole, it is an interference fit & this is what creates a seal. Your pin may have loosened up causing it to leak. Once the bearing plate is installed on the engine I do not believe that this pin can fall out. I would clean the hole out with some brake cleaner to get it as dry as possible, then fill the hole with silicone. Other option would be the to pull the bearing plate off and reset the pin.

Gloss paint, particularly in light colors, increases the reflective capability of the paint. Flat paints tend to absorb light.

Kohler Coils and for that matter " most" modern coils are internally resisted. If not you need to use a ballast resistor (and since they have problems of their own i wouldn't recommend it by a correct coil. They are usually marked like the picture above if they are not internally resisted. also any coil marked 6 v can work with a 12 volt system but must have a ballast resistor.

Lol I really would like to find another hood lol but that's how I got the 552 and don't like running around without a hood lol
  37. 3 points
It was probably heating up due to excessive current flow at twelve volts and higher voltage and resulting current flow pushed it over the edge. With a resister in line the coil will see about two amps of electrical flow, but without one it is doubled to four amps and with higher voltage applied it would be two and a half to three times as much flow as it was designed to handle.

I do like Rustoleum, but prefer it in the quart containers. The harbor Freight purple gun with the built in pressure regulator works for me. The red Rustoleum primer works as well and i actually prefer it to the etching primer. I do a light etch with oxalic acid first, then the primer, and then the paint. On the tractorsthat you want to lookolder, there isno reason that you cannot clear over the old paint if you sand it a bit with very fine wet or dry. Practice first on the BACK side of some panels and you will know if all this fuss is for you. You can also add hardener to the paint, but it is something that can be deadly if you inhale the fumes. Even if you make mistakes while learning to paint, color sanding and buffing can correct minor orange peel. I use wet or dry sand paper from800 to 1600 grit and soapy water. It does not take much sanding at all before you buff. Here is a Rustoleum job color sanded and buffed

No, I don't plan to resale this tractor. I'm 70 and wanted a WH since I was a kid. This is just a winter project to keep me busy. All hobbies are the same way. I spend months and $$$ building RC planes but try to sell em. Pennies on the dollar is about all you can get. No, this is just going to be Garage Queen when I'm done. In it's current state it runs and drives and appears to all be there

Eureka! You solved the problem. The external resistor on points ignition dates back to the mid '50s when 12 volt systems replaced 6 volt. The solenoid on all Ford products had a small "I" terminal that went to the coil to supply 12 volts while cranking and paralleled the wire from the run position on the ignition switch which had a resistor. GM and Mopar did similar things with two wires from the switch to the coil one of which went through a resistor for normal running, the other bypassed the resistor for starting. Throw that coil in the trash and get a VW coil that has the internal resistor.

@Dennis C. At least 2 coats of primer and at least 2 coats of color. Let each layer dry and wet sand it before the next coat. My wife did her GILSON this way and most folks can't tell it is a "rattle can" job.

Hi, independent what you preferr for coloring, the only advice i can give for is: The more time you spend for a good finish ahead the Surface, the better it looks after coloring. Even at a closer look. Mostly on working equippment, i didn't spend that much time to clean the Surface ahead, but the Result comes quickly. Sandblast as prepare for coating is one issue, rust prevention is the other at things, they should last long. I'm thinking about, to do powder- coating in a similar Red, but the Price is a bit higher than Coloring. I did it 10years ago on a Motocycle, it lasts without significant damages.
