7 pointsHello Red Square forum members, I'm an old dog, and my master is an old guy who is so old school, he doesn't have internet access. I have to go down to town and use the Wifi at McDonalds. Fortunately the signal is strong enough in the parking lot ( they don't let me inside ). My master has several Wheel Horses, all oldies but goodies. 6 pointsHi everyone, Ive made a few posts and received really helpful advice and feedback. What I haven't done is made an introduction. My avatar and my member name are actually that of my faithful companion, Jake, the fearless Miniature Pincer/Chihuahua mix. My name is John and I live in Oceana County, MI. Anyone who lives here knows how bad the winter of 2018 was and it was particularly bad in my area. For what ever reason, a storm system settled in over a 3 county area including mine and just hovered there for a week. We got record snow and too much of it in too short an amount of time. I killed my old Allis Chalmers which already had numerous issues and being short on funds, had no choice but to purchase a garden tractor. Not only do I have acreage that needs mowing because of the tick problem out here, but keeping my driveway which is probably about 200 yards long in the winter is a must. I absolutely dreaded the realization of having to buy a garden tractor. As I have said a few times in my posts, The relatively new snapper I bought worked ok for a season and than went to crap. After trying to repair the thing myself I made numerous visits to have it repaired by specialists. Nothing worked, the thing was just garbage. On one trip when I brought it to a tractor supply company to have it fixed, there were tons of brand new Husqvarnas mixed in with older brands of garden tractors waiting to be repaired. My neighbor's relatively new craftsman that looked brand new also went to crap after it's first use. This pretty much sold me on never getting another garden tractor again, but necessity requires one to do things they don't want to do and fate had a pleasant surprise waiting for me. I went online and began my search for something I didn't believe existed, a quality built, reliable garden tractor. I saw a couple of Wheel horses on Craigs List and decided to see what the online consensus was. Red Square was not one of the websites I originally went to. What I found both with people who owned Wheel Horses and other brands of garden tractors was an absolute lack of any negative comments about Wheel Horse. People had their preferences for Wheel Horse or other brands, but even people who preferred other garden tractors had nothing bad to say about them. I was very skeptical, but kept researching. Things like ease of implement exchange, cast iron and talk of quality built engines kept popping up, even from people who's first choice wasn't Wheel Horse. So my mind was made up. I found one that I knew I was getting a great deal on and would at least get me through the winter. I never understood the hype about Harley Davidson Motorcycles until I rode a friend's. Then I got it. I don't ride motorcycles anymore, but I was and remain a Honda fan, but I understood instantly when I rode that Harley that there was nothing else on earth like it. Even though I would never buy one, I understood instantly why people love them. My first time operating a Wheel Horse was a similar experience. I was surprised by the power and speed and how smooth and quiet my 312-8 was. And boy did she ever plow the driveway with ease. The more I work on My wheel horse and the more I learn, The more impressed I become. I have quickly fallen in love with this brand and will be a Wheel Horse owner for life. In fact, Even though I planned to get a new tractor in the future to pull my Woods L306, I am now seriously considering modding it to be a self powered pull behind mowing deck for a Wheel Horse. No doubt I have contracted WHA disease. I Have gotten so much helpful info from the forum and from members. I plan on becoming a supporter in the very near future. Thanks for all the Help Everyone. 4 pointsRight now I'm a happy boy. Hopefully my happiness will continue for years to come with my experiment. The key ways on my hubs were in terrible shape & it bugged me to think of throwing them away. After some deliberation and a lot of questions I decided to try this. Cut a new key way 90 degrees to the old one. Drill & tap a new set screw hole for the new key way and use the old set screw hole for my secondary set screw. Any thoughts on this experiment welcome.

3 pointsHi Neil Not heard of a C126, does it have a Kohler K series engine? I had problems with the starter on my 73 C120 Raider 12. Could not get parts in UK. Then I found this https://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/simon-auto selling this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Anlasser-12V-fur-Kohler-Motoren-K211-K301-K321-K341-/400889709395?hash=item5d56e38353 Ordered one (it come from Germany) arrived very quickly. Had it a couple of years now and my WH does a lot of work. Absolutely perfect. Not quiute identical to the old one but unless you're into shows does it matter, the beast starts! BTW for belts I use http://www.beltingonline.com/ excellent service, the belts I've had for my WH and the Westwood have all been Continental (a la tyres), the WH ones lasted longer than the Toro belts. Easy to order but they are very helpful if you ring them. Best to have the WH part number though Hope this helps Keith Kent

3 pointsWelcome to the forum. If you can identify the starter a kit like this would likely repair it. The bushings wear and create excessive drag in the armature. This company in Canada told me they would ship to Europe. https://www.bantasaw.com/catalog/viewproduct.asp?i=&p=5140 With permanent magnetic fields there is not much to fail electrically. Garry

3 pointsI had great success with the trench filled with gravel like Jim @SylvanLakeWH suggested. used a 6" ditch witch and went down about 18" (due to elevation gain away from wettest area of 12" +/-). Once the ditch was in I filled it with #4 gravel to within a couple inches of the top. Covered that with a strip of 6 Mill plastic and soil, over filled it ton allow for settling. Haven't had any standing water since.

3 pointsor just go with a simple french drain - trench / gravel / topsoil cover and seed...I did it around my garage 25 years ago and it still works like a charm...Depending on your soil type, depth will vary - clay needs deeper trench than a sandy / loamy soil... I just used a shovel, but your plow idea would work well I would think...

3 pointsToday I took some time to clean up the 520LXI mower. Did the typical PM on it and worked on the rear weight bracket. I thought I would mention that I tried Miller's tire paint on the plastic wheel weights and it worked very well. I also coated the steering wheel. Nice little clean up. I repainted this machine when I got it a few years ago. Two years ago I got a 60" deck with original paint which is pretty faded now. I think I will give it a quick worker repaint before I put it on. I love this machine!

How many fellow red square members are going to be there? Looks like good times from all of the pictures ive seen. I cant wait to check out all the cool stuff in person! 👍

2 pointsHello Neil, I've been inside a few of these Starters also, so you're probably familiar with what I covered in this LINK. I still have it as a spare, but was promised to someone, but not sure if they still want it?. I'll check with them. I also imported a new aftermarket one several years ago for my c-120 when it was still reasonable shipping rates, but still cost me about UK£80 !. If you buy new, just check what version you have and the number of Teeth on the Bendix.

2 pointsYes that's a little steep for his book Clyde. A guy had one on here awhile back for the same coin. A guy has the right to offer one up for 1500 but that doesn't mean we have to bite. Originals were $50 and the was closing them out for less. He may have a few left wouldn't hurt to ask. I suggest you contact him direct. I misplaced his contact info but possibly one of the other fellas will chime in with it yet. Another thing you could do if he is sold out of them is put an ad in wanted here and a member may have an extra to part with for a RESONABLE margin. Hope you find one it is a good read.

2 pointsI ordered 2 RR from Caltric on Sunday afternoon, received them in the mail at noon on Wednesday. I replaced the faulty RR and now have 13.9 volts on volt meter. Now if it would quit snowing, I could go roll the lawn. Thanks again everyone

2 pointsHad one trip on an LST that took us to San Clermente island for manuvers....that was not a fun trip..only good thing was the cig's for $1 a carton... Oh, and the LST did not have a turntable in the hold...real fun backing up the six-by's' and generators on a floating 10 foot roadway of marston matting on floats..

2 pointsPerforated pipe would likely be best. May I add, this is the first time I've heard of a Squid that wanted out of the water. While, 50+ years ago, stationed aboard the USS Guam never saw any Squids that didn't love water.

2 pointsDid a drain at my last house with a 30' L x 20" W trench, used both, perforated pipe and stone. Rented a walk behind tiller to help dig it and had that thing buried up to the top of the engine. Should've just rented a small back hoe! The stone allowed water to drain quick and easily into the pipe and the pipe allows it to flow out faster. The house was on a hill so the pipe was routed on a decline through the entire length of the trench and around to the hill slope to daylight. If it's flat ground, you can dig a large pit area filled with stone for it to drain into.

2 pointsShould have mentioned the drive belt needs to be totally covered with fabric. Some have raw rubber on the sides and they will not slip in the pulleys which is what provides the smooth clutch action. Garry

1 pointagain Jake and John. Very nice introduction. You won't find a better place for WH info nor will you find nicer people on the interweb!!! Did you get any of that snow today? We got maybe a couple inches down here in Kazoo but not enough to push or blow. Pretty much melting as it hits the pavement. There is a fellow in Crystal, MI (a coupe hours east of you) that advertises on CL all the time that has a lot of WH Tractors, Implements and assorted parts if you get in the mood for a road trip. I haven't gotten over there yet but it is on my short list of things to do. Again, welcome and we're glad you're here. Jim

1 pointYou can pressure stamp or indent your gasket material in the shape of the gasket needed, then cutting out the gasket is much simpler. A set of gasket punches for cutting the holes where the bolts or indexing plugs are located really speeds up making your own gaskets. Good luck with your rebuild.

1 pointYou will need at least 4 inches of dirt to grow and sustain grass....would you be interested in burying perf pipe ( with a sock - no gravel required )... anyway, I wouldthink a walk behind tiller with just the center tines would do a good job...that last one I put in was 75 feet long, so I had a backhoe do the trench and I put the perf pipe in and back filled it with the blade on my wheel horse...

1 pointOk, I stopped in to get a few more pictures of the casting numbers and the engine pulley arrangement etc. I tried to see if I could talk to someone to get some history but there was no one around. “C3654S” ?? @DennisThornton, I’m thinking it’s been shortened by the looks of that rough area there on the left hand side This oil can-as-hydro reservoir kills me! I’m not sure if the engine is free because I can’t disengage the engine from the transmission with that killer spring on there holding tension and I didn’t wanna go poking around on it too much since it ain’t mine. I’ll see if I can get someone to answer the door at a later date.
