Men Are Just Happier People! What do you expect from such simple creatures? Your last name stays put. The garage is all yours. Wedding plans take care of themselves. Chocolate is just another snack. You can never be pregnant. You can wear a white T-shirt to a water park. You can wear NO shirt to a water park. Car mechanics tell you the truth. You never have to drive to another gas station restroom because this one is just too icky. You don't have to stop and think of which way to turn a nut on a bolt. Wrinkles add character. Wedding dress - $5,000. Tux rental - $100. People never stare at your chest when you're talking to them. New shoes don't cut, blister, or mangle your feet. One mood all the time. Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat. You know stuff about tanks. A five-day vacation requires only one suitcase. You can open all your own jars. You get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness. If someone forgets to invite you, he or she can still be your friend. Your underwear is $8.95 for a three-pack. Two pairs of shoes are more than enough. You almost never have strap problems in public. You are unable to see wrinkles in your clothes. Everything on your face stays its original color. The same hairstyle lasts for years, maybe decades. You only have to shave your face and neck. You can play with toys all your life. One wallet and one pair of shoes - one color for all seasons. You can wear shorts no matter how your legs look... You can 'do' your nails with a pocket knife. You have freedom of choice concerning growing a mustache. You can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on December 24 in 25 minutes. No wonder men are happier!

Seems there are plenty of other chores for a work horse in the snow even without blades and blowers. Sure have hauled and burnt the wood the last 10 days! Gary

This will likely fit many other models as well. They tend to wear where the motion control block rotates on it. Toro has just discontinued it so I decided to make up my own. Since I can't easily cut the slots for the E-clips, I decided to just use cotter pins and washers. I used all 316 stainless steel since I had some left over scraps at work. Here is the pin cut and drilled. Here is the mounting plate cut and drilled sitting beside the pin. All welded up. This is my pin and a worn out OEM pin for comparison. Here are some more comparisons between the two. That is a used nyliner bushing sitting between the washers as if the block was there with the bushing installed into it. Since I have 4 520's, I made up 4 pins. I am unsure if a horizontal or vertical pin placement is better or easier to use so I made 2 of each. I hope there is enough room to install the cotter pins. Here are the plans that I drew up. Wheel Horse motion control pivot.pdf My writing is not the best. From the center of the first hole to the inside edge of the mounting plate is .77". Cleat

Well the RJ58 restoration has been on our list of things to do for a couple years now, and we finally got some time to do it. I really enjoyed restoring this little tractor with my two sons, and of course its like a brand new toy for them now that its all painted up and shiny. But the best part was the learning experience, for all of us. For me, I learned a lot of about my two boys. And for them they learned a lot about patience, how things come apart and them go back together again, and most importantly they learned how much hard work goes into a complete restoration like this. It might have taken twice as long verses if I just did it all myself, but it was worth it. They seem to have a lot more respect for it now, compared to a new toy that was just given to them. And as many memories as I already have with this tractor, we just added some more. I'll post some pictures of the process from start to finish, I hope you guys enjoy! Here are some pics of the RJ back in 1996. Here are some pics of it loaded ready to go back home for a full restoration. Some pics of the tear down.

Well, I finally got my 857 running I bought at the auction in Charlottesville. I had a dead coil, nasty carb with lots of tar in it, plugged pulse fuel pump, fried regulator, and destroyed wiring harness. I rebuilt the carb, disassembled the fuel pump and cleaned it (still full of stale fuel and terrible amounts of dirt plugging it up) swapped out coils, and jumped it straight from the battery to start her. She runs pretty good, but needs a head gasket, regulator, and rewire. It did develop a peck about a minute after starting it. It doesn't smoke or throw any oil. Check out the video below and tell me what you think the peck is. I'm suspecting timing and if that is it, how do I adjust it?

Sorry, I will be of no help. I don't know as many intricate details about the later models, and don't personally have any models with louvers. I haven't been able to locate any parts manuals that show that drip tray listed. It seems I've seen a picture of that setup before... could have been here on the forum. Seems logical and illogical to me at the same time... the drip tray would keep the engine cleaner, but even with separation from the hood, the airflow restriction by covering the louvers back up negates having the louvers at all. Who knows... could have been one of those things that some left the factory that way until they realized it was more trouble than it was worth or something.

When cleaning the carburetor was the idle jet #5 removed and cleaned? The hole in the bottom can be plugged up to the point that one would not think there is a opening there. Behind the welch plug are three holes that meter in fuel in stages as the throttle is opened. Any one plugged will lean the fuel mix and lead to surging. The main jet #6 is fixed so any of the idle circuit plugged will lean the mixture. Just my

Looking at the parts break out for the VM-80 engine I didn't see any regulator. is there a regulator mounted on the chassis of your tractor?? if not I would guess you have a very low amperage fixed charging system...probably 3 amps at best. Anything beyond a couple of LEDs will be draining your system. Using all LEDS for your desires get a bigger battery and put it on a charger frequently.... Good news as you have a mag system the worse that happens is you will run the battery down and the lights will go out. As long as you don't shut it off you will be OK

My snow season horses are all 10 pinion and have survived pushing large amounts of snow. i liked them so much I put a 10 pinion in my 310-8 that has big ags. She is used to haul things around again no issues. My thought is if you are planning on pulling something so extreme you would break the differential you probably should get a bigger tractor. that would be cheaper (and more reliable) than trying to build some locking system. The other thing to consider is if you build a stouter locking differential what is the next weak link in the chain to break...the frame to tranny plate.????

That caught my eye too. Most of you know about the 1976 B-80 I bought new and then converted it to a 160. I was planning on having Terry make me up a pair of B-160 decals for that reason. I agree with no B-160's out of the factory though.

My understanding is head bolts should be checked & re-torqued after a little run in and when warm. Couple of my Kohlers were very loose after running.

I too would like to know what that tractor started life as. Could it be a 1982 SB-421? There were no B-160's to the best of my knowledge.

To set the timing you can use the static timing method. You will probably need to remove the flywheel cover to see the marks for "S" spark and TDC. Probably a good time to replace points too. Kohler static_timing.pdf

Thanks everyone. I appreciate all the well wishes. With 4 other furry friends bouncing around the house you don’t have time to sit around and dwell on it. It was hard the first couple of days but there is plenty of loving still going around.

The world can never have too many boxing squirrels Ed. Just saying in case you are looking for another project... The hammer price for the complete set of stuffed, boxing squirrels was $70,000.“Afterwards I had to leave the room and go to the bathroom and think about what I’d just done,” Christopher said. He’d just paid $70,000 for eight dead squirrels wearing tiny boxing gloves.

Caleb has one of those really nasty sick “bugs” going around and so no shop time for us last night or tonight. I wanted to work on sorting out the wiring so bad tonight but one look at him reminded me that it wasn’t fair to him to work on this project without him. So I studied over some of the info sent to me by my buddy from the Sunshine State—thanks @19richie66 for the emails! This forum has so many great guys on it and I’m enjoying getting to know more and more of you better. @pfrederi looks to me like you have a top notch customer added piece that was so well executed that it looks factory. Thank you for sharing pics and including it here. Someday when I pick up a louvered hood I’ll know where to look to get the proper plan for a tray and water evacuation tube!

I finally moved the tower pivot points forward a couple inches and did some hydraulics mock up. I’m not crazy about the lower tower mounts but I had the 1”x2” bar stock so that’s what I used. It looks a little clunky but it should work. I still need to do some welding cleanup but it looks like everything fits and will clear after some final adjustments.

My present crew consists of the first I bought, 1055 with 42" blade, GT-14 with a Johnson front end loader and the 418-C with 42" blade. Our snow fall tends to be six to ten inches of wet and heavy so a snow blower wouldn't work well here.
