5 pointsHi all. I'm currently redoing a work horse gt1142 but more custom then original. I've bought a p216 onan and the HD 8 speed 8 pinion rear diff to swap into it the rear end Ive already rebuilt currently waiting to get seals for it though. The onan I have picked up for $200 with about 1,050 hours that I'm tearing to to hone up re ring and reseal it. Everything so far looks good and seems to be well taken care of

5 pointsI have been reading Straight from the Horse's Mouth, and that led me down a rabbit hole. My grandparent's farm is a few miles away from the birthplace of Elmer Pond. Elmer and his brother (founder of Speedex) worked at Shaw Manufacturing in a tiny Kansas town. Among other things, Shaw made garden tractors, and I found one for sale. As it turns out, the seller knows some of my family, and his late father was a great collector. His father got a shaw tractor running and accumulated another frame and multiple engines. $2500 is the asking price, but I don't think the value is really known. It will go to auction if he doesn't sell it first. Any ideas on value or desirability? If anyone is interested, I would be happy to make an introduction. I am only interested if it is almost free. Here are some pictures of the collection for sale:

4 pointsI have a little time off this week so I’m making some progress. I welded some box to the front hitch. It will act as a bumper and give me a point to attach the front of my angle braces. It’s a tight fit getting around the wide Onan using the Cub plans from PF Engineering but I think I made it work. I also mocked up one up one of the boom arms and the bucket brackets to check clearance. As it turns out, the forward swept axle and oversized 18” front tires make things a tight fit when turning the wheels with the bucket down. The tire rubs slightly on the boom arm. I think lowering the tower boom connection a 1/2” and raising the bucket boom connection 1” will give me the clearance needed without negatively affecting performance.

4 pointsFound a couple of nice Shaw tractors with impalement in the $ 2,000 range. Need to educate the seller. Considering the condition It would be very hard to justify more than a few hundred unless one of those engines is super rare. For Sale: 1948 Shaw Duall Model R6, complete with sickle bar mower, cultivator and plow. All original and in excellant condition. Very good tires.Owners letters from company, original advertising and business checks. Pictures available. Asking $3800 Located south eastern Wyoming http://raregardentractors.com/gardentractors-for-sale.html#PhotoSwipe1514492972757 This one is asking $ 2,000 https://www.pinterest.com/pin/432486370436607949/

3 pointsHey Guys! I thought some folks might be interested in a couple Wheel horse videos I posted on Youtube. I bought a B-80 last years and these videos are from wrenching on that tractor.............Like MOST of us, I had to get another WH, so this fall I added a 310-8 to my collection and then a plow! I'm far from done though! Here are a couple vids featuring my B-80. Hope you enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=PostPgGDrQo https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=chMZNoFqoU0 Here are some tractor pics too. Hope you all enjoy the videos.

3 pointsI was at a school Near Rochester N.Y. yesterday finishing up a repair on a swimming pool AHU of all things. The sun was out and like 5 deg with a strong westerly wind. My co-hort calls and asks if I have any Hot Shot R-12 replacement on the truck. I say yes. He asks if I could bring it to him. He's about 20 mi east of me. I say sure. He says drive careful it's a white out here. I get about 5 miles to him and it starts dumping. There's about 8 inches on the ground and when I get to the school, I can't see the entrance road or even the school bldg for that matter.

3 pointsI concur. I think people also don't want to work on stuff...or don't know how, or don't have the time. The manufacturer's probably build stuff now the way most American consumers want it...CHEAP ! Buy it cheap, use it, throw away, buy another. That's not what I like. I try to get the most out of something that I can. 98 Chevy Z-71 4x4, 253,000 miles; 94 WH 520h, ? hrs; 1981 Toyota Hi-Lux 4x4 Pick up, 330,000 miles. Course it could be because I don't have the $$$ for new stuff. I love tinkering...got to always be doing something. By the way, my wife's uncle has 2 GTO's of that era sitting in his garage. I think one is a "Judge." He bought them new and absolutely loves them. Says they would fly. Plus he KNOWS you can't buy nothing today that compares with the quality. Maybe faster, but not better. I'd rather do it with "class", than do it "fast."

3 pointsMy 418-A had some heavy oil in it. Maybe it was thick just because it was old and dirty. The hydro lift was slow to start, so I drained the oil (over a 24 hour period), flushed it, and replaced it with synthetic Mobile 1, 10w30. Made a big difference in cold weather. Jim

3 pointsI did some searching online for info about the store. Found a newspaper article in the Macomb IL. Journal, dated 1927. Seems 2 men robbed the unlocked store of some 2000 men`s suits at night. It was believed that they fenced them in Chicago. ----- John

3 pointsI have a 77 C160 and a 74 C160 and the 77 has atf and the 74 has 10w30. I use the 74 for plowing snow so I use mobile 1 and never have any problems in the winter with slow moving.

3 pointsHear ye! Here ye!, another closed case for the red guys! Cleaned up cam and washer today, dried everything off as suggested, and adjusted to neutral. (Also turnbuckle bolt at left side of disk was loose) getting 5 mph out of her now with no creeping down of the lever. Good reverse too. Takes a little while to finesse it but got it. Thanks to ALL who helped in this phase of my project. Am sure will be back soon with somethin' else, but for now Thanks Terry

3 pointsI got to see some pics of this setupespecially attached to the tractor with belt. I have bought and sold enough GT’s over the years that I’ve seen people “throw in” an off brand deck saying that it was for a specific tractor but it wouldn’t attach nor would it work as delivered. If this one is attached and functioning, I’d like to see how they made it happen. Blackbeard is in storage for the winter and I had an extra deck for a Cub 782 floating around so I slid it under there for the winter... It looks funny every time that I see it. However, knowing how the two different decks are attached to their respective tractors... I’d like to see the “engineering” done on yours to actually make that work @rlf. My my recommendation would be to pick up a correct deck and attachments as it will make your life much easier in the long haul! If you have a cub deck like the one pictured and it has been fabricated to work on your tractor, then it is from the 1960’s or very early 70’s which is much older than your tractor anyway.

3 pointsThose two white wires on the side lugs are the ACV in to the Rectifier/regulator. The center lug is the DCV out of the RR to the battery. It looks like the battery wire is loose. The black wire on the left side lug is the trigger wire to the tach. Remove and clean all connections including the RR to ground.

3 pointsThere should be a compression spring in the assembly to hold the deck height stationary.

2 pointsDid get about an inch today here not much more than a dusting but enough to make the roads greasy. Went to start the 520 and battery couldn't cut the mustard. Even had a trickle on it. Might be the -1 temp had a little something to do with it too! Older batt and probably got a dead cell so it's not like I didn't see it coming. Jumped it out got it running and in to the shop for a quick swap & some cab time. Driveway didn't really need it but I was jonesing!
-
2 pointsDefinitely! I finally bought a trailer so I will definitely be there Somebody has to keep an eye on @WHX12 - he will probably have changed his name to WHX16 by then. . I will bring my pallet grill as well so there will be some smoking going on!

2 pointsThe problem with changing between 10w30 and ATF is getting the other type fluid completely flushed out. Today's modern fluids have lots of additives that can react (badly) with each other. Years ago there weren't near the additives and you might have gotten by swapping the two

2 pointsFor the other view... i got tired of waiting for my 418A to decide it was ready to lift the snowblower so I could move it outside to warm up. Based on comments here i switched her over to Mobil 1 10w-30... No appreciable change... She was retired from snow duty, now only works summers and still doesn't pick up the mower deck very fast...but at least I can drive it out with the deck down.

2 pointsWith the transmission repairs (knock on wood) behind me, I was ready to move on from that very tedious phase to something a little more fun. It may be putting the cart before the horse, but I wanted to get the tires for this project sorted out. Shortly after I got this tractor 2 years ago, I started looking for some ag lug tires for it. Tires for the GT-14's 15" rims were hard enough to find, and tires in the original 9.50 width were even harder. What ones I did find seemed to come in either 8.50 or 10.50. I eventually settled on the look of the Goodyear Sure Grip tires. They were sort of hard to find, but I stumbled across some on simpletire.com in the 8.50 width for a price that was significantly lower than the few other sources I could find. The price was enough to get me to pull the trigger. Since they tried to cancel the order, I'm pretty sure the price was an error, but when I pushed back they did honor it. A week or so later, they were on my doorstep. Before I got to the point of doing anything with them, as previously mentioned, the project went on hiatus. Fast forward to several weeks ago, when I am once again working on this project and thinking about how I want it to look when it's done. I'm not sure what led me to it, but I stumbled across some ag-lug Interco Interforce ATV tires in a 27" size that would fit on 12" GT rims. I definitely liked the look of the smaller rim and taller sidewall better. Since I already had bought the Goodyear's, I deliberated long and hard about buying a different set, but eventually convinced myself that for the time I was investing into the tractor, it was worth it to get the look I wanted. I waited until I got the transmission back together and proved it would run again before ordering a set in the 27x10-12 size. So, with the backstory out of the way on how I came to have two sets of new rear tires for the GT, on to the fun part, the fit-up. Before getting into the effort to dismount/mount the tires, I decided to take off the stock tires and just set the new ones in place to see how they looked. I found it hard to judge with no rim in the center, so I cut pieces of cardboard to simulate the rim. The Goodyear's actually looked better than I expected. I had recently found some pictures of an MTD 990 with the same tires and thought the tires looked a little small. That still might be the case if I mounted them on the rims, but for the mock up I was pleasantly surprised. Side by side, you can see that the 8.50 width is narrower than the original 9.50's. The Interco's were true to size in width and height. Despite what the tape measure says, to me they looked a little smaller than the original tires. I think it is because even though both are 27" in diameter, the tread makes up a much larger portion of the diameter on the Interco. The smaller rim size may play a part too. Interco does make a 30" size, but I don't think those would have fit without modifying the fenders. Despite looking slightly different than what I expected, I was pleased overall with their appearance and decided to continue down that path. The Interco's presented another small challenge. I had a couple different 12" rims to choose from to use with them, but none with the right backspacing. The stock GT-14 rims are 8" wide rims with nearly neutral backspacing. I had 12" dia, 8" wide Wheel Horse rims, but they all were heavily offset to the inside. I had a set of rims off of a Craftsman GT that were closer, but still had about 1" more offset than I needed. I decided I could probably make that up by mounting the hubs farther in on the axle. I saw on another GT-14 thread a debate about how much strength you loose going from the GT-14 hubs down to the regular hubs for a 12" wheel. The GT-14 hubs are beefier without a doubt, but I have some hubs off of a 520H with dual set screws that should be up to the task of what I will likely use this tractor for.

2 pointsNaw seriously...I like Red Square because of the great expanse of WH knowledge I gain here and the fact that you guys are so willing to help and take the time to do so. I like all stuff old, and actually enjoy seeing an old tractor, truck, auto, sitting in the background. When the weather warms a little and I make room in my shop I'll have plenty of questions about my 520h.

2 pointsCrank lengths, keyway sizes, size of tapped hole in the end etc. However one big difference was WH specified a ball bearing on the crank shaft item 11 and 47.. JD did not (sleeve #9 ). Thus I had to use an Electric PTO when i put a JD KT 17 on my C-175. 30 variant number on Series 1 used sleeve bearings only 4 used ball bearings In the series 2 ball bearings were not offered but a roller thrust bearing was used on only 1 variant

2 pointsWhat I find most interesting about this conversation so far is that, by me asking “what is the comparison to a wheel horse 520“, the answers have spanned decades of time, but there is no clear-cut answer. The thing that sticks out is, it seems to be you can’t have an apples to apples comparison… If somebody wanted a large mower deck, a huge engine and a smaller sized tractor, the wheel horse 520 seemed to fit the bill, and maybe they bought that. But if they needed something a little bigger, and maybe needed a three point hitch, then perhaps they would look at the John Deere, although it had about the same size engine is the 520. Perhaps there was no such thing as “the right answer“ all manufacturers needed to make their color tractor in size X, Y and Z?
-
2 pointsThose wheels carry the rear of the deck and are used to set the height. The plate with the holes does get misaligned and bent as does the U shaped channel that houses the lever with the pin. They need to be aligned so the U channel rides on the plate.
-
2 pointsHere's a couple pics the top white/rust is an IH CUB CADET deck the red one is a 42" Wheel Horse deck that should be the correct one that fits the top one shouldn't be with the sorry, that last pic shows where to find the model/serial # tag if still legible, Jeff.

2 pointsNope I never opened it up, here is another video at night with engine running- you can here a little static from the engine but not to much. And keep in mind I didn’t have the volume up as much as the Christmas music Hmmmmm.... that would be good!!

2 pointsOH NO !! Okay so on the list so far - ratchet straps, hand or power winch, wheel chocks, extra underwear.
-
2 pointsAnd don't do as a friend of mine did. We were unloading a street rod project from a car trailer on his rather steep driveway, he had chocked the tires on the trailer and the truck. Unfortunately he chocked the rear tires of the truck and front tires of the trailer. A couple of us were pulling the car with a rope and one was on the trailer pushing. As we rolled the car back the trailer tilted toward the rear and all four wheels that had been chocked lifted off the ground simultaneously! The car was unloaded much faster than we had expected and his truck and trailer were at the bottom of the hill, no harm no foul. Of course the fellow who was on the trailer pushing the car off had to go home and change his shorts.

2 pointsI've always wanted to take the time and borrow a set of racing scales from our local dirt guys and weigh out some of my tractor models front to rear to get some idea of how they are weighted - especially that D-180....might get some surprises . Sarge
