6 pointsStory is guy I got it from bought it New in 1966 and he said the dealer painted it this way to sell it faster... I got new decals with it and it will be restored to original. Sat in his barn for 10+ years, he put battery charger on it and it fired right up and it doesn't smoke a lick. When these techys run good they really run good! First pic is from before I washed it

4 pointsLittle more on the muffler today. Made the cutout for the front outlet pipe and a rear brace to the engine. Also fitted the 418 exhaust guard. Still have to make a mounting bracket for it. Going to weld that to the brace that runs the right side under the hood and try to incorporate the coil and solenoid mount so they are up and out of the way.

3 pointsI saw this thing sitting by the metal scrap pile at the county dump today and I could not leave it there. I haven't looked to see if there's any brand names on it, but it's red! Unreal that someone would scrap this thing.

3 pointsFor financial reasons and Cecil's son not being interested it was sold to AMC in 1974. It was really just big business from then on. In 1982 it was sold to Munn Investment Group. Finally in 1986 Toro acquired Wheel Horse. Personally, since the Ponds no longer owned Wheel Horse I feel that Toro was the best move that could have happened. I doubt they would have been around until 2007 or the design completely changed (severely cheapened) if they hadn't. There's a nice blurb about it in a book written by the CEO of Toro.

3 pointsI was just about to cast my vote for the 416 when I saw this. I only use the twins for winter duty. I am convinced half the fuel generates HP and the other half generates heat. What doesn't the 1100 like about winter? I have four 1100s..... three lift instantly and one requires the warm up like the manual recommends.

2 pointsMounted mine low on the frame near the front axle, sort of a protected area and close to the carburetor. I ran a fused wire from the ignition coil to power it.
-
2 pointsFWIW, I mount mine on the frame in front of the hood stand. Lower than the tank and tucked out of the way. Also gives room to install a filter and convenient for servicing, if needed. Central to wiring as well.

2 pointsThank you Steve. My son gets all the credit for sticking the metal together. I just did the fit up. I wish I had the time and materials to make more but it's all I can do to get one done. I am planning on making a new fuel tank for it made of 1/8" aluminum sheet. Going to have my son weld that up for me too. He got into the right profession.

2 pointsWell, there will not be any measurable snow in Southeast New York this season. That's for sure. I need to put the winter attachments on my horses...then it will all fall in Cleveland and Buffalo.
-
2 pointsI had picked up the 44” blower over the summer, it was run on a 310-8 (bought that too). Was thinking of putting it on the 414, but that does too good as a plow tractor. The 16’s were the best choice because of power, with the edge going to the Onan with torque, since new though, that Eaton 1100 didn’t like winter, so on the C160 it goes!
-
2 pointsYup, sorry, I meant a 29.5" belt, but I jumped the gun on that anyway....the belt guard solved it. Thanks everyone for the help! I see where the bottom edge of the belt guard dishes out a bit towards the engine/trans side, so I see what you mean about adding washers to the spacers, which will push the guard out and give the belt a little more room on the bottom of its path. I think adding some washers are the right next step since the marks the belt left on the guard are all along the bottom and up into the trans pulley a little. I assume the ideal condition is the belt only contacting the guard when the clutch is in, but that may be tough for my old tractor and a brand new belt.
-
2 pointsYes Sylvan great bunch here ....don't anyone get me wrong that I am trying to bash other forums... I am well aware that other fellas here have other hobbies and interests. .. Atvs, boats, snomos, wood working, off road, Jeeps, trucks which is great... the list is endless. RS has just got them beat hands down as far as site layout and ease to communicate. They all offer a small fee much like here to become a "supporter" but yet the ads and the gibberish don't go away. Think I'll stick with my horses!
-
1 pointThat's correct. Also be careful of the trans pulley rubbing on the guard in the center. More common on suburbans for some reason but it happens with the RJs too. All that rubbing equals noise plus it could eventually wear a hole into the guard. All those LITTLE tweaks will eventually get you there. Sometimes you adjust one thing and it affects the other end. Even loosening the bolts and adjusting it in the hole and re-tighten can make a difference. Glad you got it going in the right direction.

1 pointHoping to get back on it this week, getting close though. Gonna flush it out a bit upside down the fill it with fresh fluid, I checked it out before I took it apart and it was not exceptionally loud and seemed to work fine. I have the same Hydro in my Power King 1218 and it has been good to me after 30+ years of use.

1 pointWhen I think of all that energy expelled chopping wood, it reminds me to go clean the spiders out of my garage heater's pilot burner. The little devils love propane!
-
1 pointAbsolutely right Steve, part of the plan! Ed, the 416 takes several minutes for the lift when it’s cold, been like that since new. Besides, the C has to earn its keep

1 pointI know this is not Wheel Horse but could not pass it up. I scored a Sears made by Roper. As far as I can find out only made in 1981 or 1982. What makes this one special to me is it also has a Sears loader made by Kwik Way.

1 pointVinegar doesn't get its due credit as a rust remover! It not as fast as muriatic or phosphoric but if you are soaking it sure is safer & far cheaper. Don't forget your pieces though! They might disappear if left too long!

1 pointNotice your drive belts have raw rubber sides which seldom quit driving when the tension is released. All our belts are fabric covered to help them slip in a no-tension situation except for the starter/generator belts that use raw rubber for better traction. The other exception is a belt that bends backwards over a flat idler pulley requires special construction to get a reasonable life expectancy. Garry

1 pointYou guys no how this goes. Well I recently let go of a few only to have a few more take there place. Well I tried guess there's no hope. My grandson even approves one of them.
-
1 pointIt's hard to stop half way through the process, and go back. Keep going forward, continue using the same process you used on the hood. Then cut and buff the original paint I see lurking there under that patina/greasey hood. That tractors original paint will easily glow again, if you just keep on going.

1 pointHi guys, picked up new wheel horse 1055 yesterday as you can see it’s a pulling machine! All origanal except for starter wiring and some fuel hoses. Bought new plug, and new fuel filter cause the gas tank was full of crap. Little 10 Horse will have you in a wheelie in no time with that straight pipe adding lots of power. Had three of my wheel Horses at waters farm days in Sutton Mass (anyone in the area should come) left them for the night took this one home cause it wasn’t running right but got it to run like a top in no time. Very excited to pull with it tomorrow, will update you guys. And one more thing, the throttle only goes out about one cm. and I can’t figure out why I will look into it more though. Will get some better pics too

1 pointMy buddy and fellow RS member, Ed Kennell, just left with my last two Classic-style Wheel Horses. So long to my 1986 312A and matching 1986 417A. Ed and I used the hand winch installed on his trailer plus the HF crane on my 518xi to easily load the tractors. Both are must-have accessories in my book! In preparation for our move next year, I am continuing to downsize the herd to a workable number.. So in the Wheel Horse column I now have left three Black Hoods and three 5xi tractors. That still leaves seven Bee Hinds as well. Next weekend we begin the search for a new property further South in the State for Lovers.

1 pointAfter I overhauled the pump on my D200 I ran several pressure test to include implement pressure test holding the lift at full extension for a fairly long period (not a good practice in normal use). After sitting for a day I noticed some drips from bottom of aluminum pump housing. Turns out the actual source was the oil seal on the input shaft. Cleaned it up and haven't had any leaks since. I surmised that holding the control valve open at end of stroke builds up higher pressure in the pump housing enough to overcome the seal. In normal use I do not do that and haven't had any return leaks. In addition to input shaft I would suppose the two side seals could also be a problem.. EDIT: Some people call minor leaks drips seeps etc. a problem. To me they are part of my corrosion control program. Very few pieces of my old equipment will ever rust out from the bottom
-
1 pointI do have more work to do on this but I also use it around my property. It can lift about 500 pounds also goes over 6 feet high. Yes it has hydraulic category 0 3 point on the rear.l
