12 pointsFirst off thank you all for the kind Birthday greetings. Got myself a B-Day present. Bring on the leaves. I am impressed by the design and quality of the build. The horse is my recent CL find has a Series 2 KT 17 that is gray (service engine) but built to a Wheel horse Spec... She has made a couple of trips with the rake picking up heavy damp grass. Worked well. The screen on top of the rake has to be cleaned rather often with the damp grass. also gets very heavy when full. Mowing uphill in heavy grass with the rake almost full made her hit the governor . Full up the rake will push the C-175 around on turns. may have to look at front weights. Have to do some cosmetic work on the horse. I wanted to make sure she was mechanically reliable first. (Then again none of my horses are show queens)

7 pointsThis is their Wheel Horse hitch plate. Seems to be strong enough for my use. Braced down to the draw bar pin.

5 pointsThe only cost to you would be a few gallons of kerosene, and a $8 shift boot. I had one in similar condition a few years ago and...suprisingly... the gears inside cleaned up very good. Most of the rust is from the cast iron trans case halfs.... the rust hits them firts and...seemiingly...sacrafices itself for the life of the hard steel gears. check out these old pics of mine

4 pointsHello, As many of you know, Terry has been doing this craft part time for quite awhile. I just feel compelled to post something on his behalf. I have purchased many sets of decals from Terry at Redo Your Horse and let me tell you he is the absolute best at what he does! I can be a very annoying individual and when I have had to call him with an issue, he greets me with nothing but professionalism. I have many horses that look absolutely great thanks to him and his knowledge of Wheel Horse/Toro Tractors. So I give praises to Terry at Redo Your Horse!
-
4 pointsJust came across this Wheel Horse Toro . Has less than 400 hours. Can you please tell me the year, model and value. Comes with the front loader, deck and forks for the loader. Thank you very much. The owner is starting at $5000
-
4 pointsWell, get rid of the craftsman, show your 416 a little more love, and who can blame the GT14? It just didn't like that import!
-
4 pointsYou better get rid of them all. They're all trying to do you in.I'll come with my trailer and take them all to Pollack Pete's horse training camp.
-
4 pointsYou probably would do this, but others reading tis may not. Jack up the front end while draining. After filing, jack up both rear wheels and run the tractor thru all the gears and make sure both wheels are turning to ensure all gears are being washed. Repeat this as many times as necessary until the kerosene comes out clean. Then repeat with cheap 30w motor oil. Then drain and fill with proper gear oil. PS I reuse the Kero for future parts cleaning and the oil to lube chain saw bars.

4 pointsOK, here's my experience with the criminal justice system. Many years ago, more than I care to remember, I was called to jury duty on an assault and robbery case. The female victim was assaulted and robbed of her wallet. by a male on a city street. A suspect fitting the description was spotted several blocks away and was detained while the victim was brought to the victim and she made a positive ID. During the trial, the defense was.. The suspect was not wearing a black puffy vest as the victim testified, it was a gray charcoal color. There was no witnesses, it was his word vs her word. It was impossible for the defendant to get from the crime scene to the point he was apprehended based on the timing of the victims 911 call and the police call that they had a suspect. The jury only had an hour and could not make a decision that day, but it was clear the female jury foreman was pressing for a quick acquittal and had a 8-3 vote. I was one of the 3 that voted guilty. I live in the country, but worked in the city near where this crime took place, so that evening I got a city map, marked the to spots in question and walked briskly from the crime scene to the arrest site. It took me 47 seconds less than the phone calls showed. Next day as the jury convened, I caused a major uproar when I presented my map and stop watch findings to the jury. The foreman screamed mistrial, you can't present evidence. and made the statement " you don't have to live in the city, but I do". I am pleased to report...he was convicted. Speak up, do the right thing and the system may just work.

4 pointsPresuming the axle bearings aren't sloppy I would say flush it and see what it is like after. Even if you were going to open it up right away you would want to flush it first. After the flush you can hear how it sounds in each gear and decide what it's fate will be.

4 pointsMy problem was with people from a nearby condo development walking their dogs and not picking up after them on the front lawn. Not a very pleasant thing to get it plastered on the tractor wheels or worse to get it thrown by the blades. Never really caught anyone doing it so i never had any confrontation with anyone. Fought with town for about one year and finally they put the proper sign next to sidewalk . Now the stuff really hit the fan .First day of the sign and there is one pile of crap right under the sign. Then for the next couple of days someone actually picks it up places in a plastic bag and throws it right in the center of driveway. Now as per my wife's words I turn into " a deranged lunatic" and call the cops when there is another bag there. Guy comes and is trying to calm me down and just to call right away when i find who did it. So I proceed to tell him in no uncertain terms that it is from the development and in no way i am going to call and that it is just going to be a very bad day for me if i see it happening. Well i guess that i really made an impression because a few minutes after he left I heard him in the development though the cars loudspeaker announcing that it is illegal to not pick up after your dog and that it is not only illegal but dangerous to throw it intentionally in someone's property. Later that day towards evening i heard him again saying exactly the same thing . Not only did that action fix the problem immediately but also from that day on dog walking traffic was basically reduced by more than half. I guess that it pays off to occasionally lose you mind .

3 pointsThe paint is pretty dull. I heard about this plastic gear problem when I researched a John Deere I found for sale last year. I am sorry to now know this Red Guy has the same weak point. We were talking casually when I got the 5K price. I am going to try an offer of half of that with the intention of 3K as my best offer. I will use the plastic cam gear as negotiation leverage. I don't need another tractor but I want this one. Thanks for the info.
-
3 pointsAwesome! I have one. Pay very close attention to what "shallowwatersailor" just said! Your Kawasaki might have the plastic cam gear and the word is that it WILL fail. But, it's all fixable with some time and some money. I would LOVE to have the FEL! I think it's worth what the buyer is asking IF your model does NOT have the plastic cam gear. (Heck it might be worth it if it does but get the owner to pay attention to the below!) Here's my notes. Video of replacing cam gear Http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/topic/55095-1998-520-lxi-worker-rehab-survivor/#comment-512059 Steel camshafts replaced the plastic version in production models starting in February 1998 in FD620 engines so this problem does not apply to the following engines. FD620D-CS00 ? Beginning serial 153727 ? John Deere Model F911 FD620D-DS02 ? Beginning serial 149283 ? John Deere Model 425 FD620D-CS01 ? Beginning serial 150198 ? John Deere Model 445 FD620D-ES11 ? Beginning serial 152490 ? John Deere Model 6×4 Gator "In February of 1998, steel camshafts went into all 620D engines. The following engine(s) should have the steel camshaft and stiffer valve springs. FD620D-DS02 with the beginning engine serial number of 149283?" http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/topic/55095-1998-520-lxi-worker-rehab-survivor/?hl= lxi The same motor (basically) was used in the John Deere 425 tractor. I think - you need to verify this independently - that kawasaki changed to a steel camshaft gear in 1998 so I think all Lxi's are free from that affliction. It is my understanding that if the plastic gear fails, you have better than 50% odds that the engine will survive the event without further damage. Lxi models initially came with a plastic cam gear, if hasn't been replaced for the steel one, that will have to be done around 1000 hours or you'll have a mess in the engine

3 pointsI live in a sleepy, quiet, private neighborhood, most neighbors I know by name. For yrs. I never had a problem and then I began to have two... First one, someone's dog was all of a sudden pooping in my front yard on a daily basis. From the evidence left behind it appeared to be a large dog being fed table scraps or canned dog food. Not a pretty site to say the least. I finally snagged the dog and its owner and confronted him at his house a few minutes after the crime. New guy to the neighbor hood. He lied and said he doesn't walk his dog up the road near my house. I told him if he wanted he could come up to my house and watch the video, On the video you could see him watching his dog do it and I told him so. At first he refused to come clean it up, but after I reminded him that payback is a ****** he did clean that mess up. Second problem I began to have was even worse. Someone was throwing used condoms in my side yard. I was finding them every Saturday morning. I relocated one of my video cameras and sat watching the monitor on Friday night. To my surprise a car pulls to the side of the road at 11 pm and shut its lights off. I waited about 15 minutes and then went outside, snuck around the back of the car and walked up to the drivers door. I recognized the car, it belonged to a neighbor that lived at the end of my street. It wasn't the guy who lived at the end of the street that was inside, it was his grandson and apparently the kids girl friend. I could tell they had just "wrapped things up" When I was looking thru the car talking to the kid who was in the passenger seat I saw a used condom dangling from my fence which runs along my side yard. I told the kid there will be no more parking along side my yard, he nervously replies, yes sir no problem. I then pointed to the 'left over' dangling from my fence and told him to take care of that and that I really didn't appreciate all the others he left behind. He then replies oh, that's not mine. I say's ok, lets go wake up grandpa and we can explain to him what's going on here and I began walking up the road. He then yells no please don't do that! I tell him clean it up, yes sir is the reply. Now, I know his grandfather , but he didn't know that. His grandfather is a real good guy, a real big guy to and he don't put up with nonsense... That kid was lucky grandpa didn't have to get out of bed that night... No more problems.....

3 points@FatJackDurham Didn't the Craftsman try to kill you a couple of times on hills?
-
3 pointsThat would be a hard one. Dump the craftsman and use it as a starter saving account.......
-
3 points@Vinylguy Terry has always been a great supporter of our little part of the Garden Tractor hobby. In the early days so many decals that he has available came from requests that people were making here! Sometimes a crappy old decal picture and a few measurements was all he had to go on. Terry and Lola are a real asset to Wheel Horse collectors nationwide.

2 pointsWorcester sand and gravel has a truck show every year. I go there quite a bit to get materials for work and my house. It's cool in general because they never really retire any of their equipment so you never know what you'll see. You will always see Macks though. Good assortment this year mostly older stuff which is what you want to see anyway. The little man loved it and what else can you do for $2?

2 pointsThose are good hours for a 1999 520Lxi. It has a Kawasaki liquid-cooled engine that has had problems in the past with a nylon cam gear failing when the metal insert would separate from the nylon gear. At some manufacturing run number, it was changed to an all metal gear. Somewhere on the forum is that information. It happens to be the one version that I don't own! There are a few members that have a 5xi with a FEL who might pipe in. With those hours and the appearance in the photos, it looks like a good candidate. My feeling is that the price might be slightly bit high.

2 pointsI agree, get rid of that crapsman and try to recoop what money you can. I'd hate to part with either horse. I know I've become a horse hoarder ... and I don't care! Lots worse things I could be hooked on!
-
2 pointsTerry's decals are on all of my tractors and implements. Great product, great service, great shipping. Cleat
-
2 pointsAlso, Terry has been a strong supporter of RedSquare. Over the years he has come up with coll banners, refrigerator/tool box magnets and other goodies for supporters of the site. Great guy too.
-
2 pointsYou are talking to the wrong crowd; we only have experience buying and coming up with reasons (excuses) for never parting with them.

2 pointsTorches, plasma cutter and a mig welder. Teamed up with a big hammer and determination. I hope it works Coming soon to a post near you.

2 pointsThat truck tire hit the porch right where I had put a double floor joist in. If it had been about a foot to the left it would have gone up the steps and gone through a beveled glass door!

1 pointHey everyone, I bought a new toy! It's a Toro 832 RER, model 56145. Based on the serial series, 700xxxx, I determined its a 1987 model. I bought this for one primary purpose..Autumn leaf pickup. Im still using my 1964 Wheel Horse 854 as my primary summer mower, but it doesnt have an available bagger, so I needed a 2nd machine for leaf pickup. I bought the Toro a few days ago, its running fine! needed a carb clean, and it might need a coil..its stalling when hot. If it needs a coil, I'll create a new thread about that. But as for the leaf pickup, it works! I have the deck set high, because I want to get only leaves, and not grass..but it doesnt really chop up the leaves much. The leaves in the bagger are still fairly complete, chopped into roughly halves or thirds..I would like to get finer chopping if possible. (im collecting the leaves in a big compost pile, to use as garden soil ammendemnet for next year..) Does anyone have suggestings for something like a gator blade or a mulching blade that might give me finer leaf mulching? my main goal is leaves only, collected in the bagger, not grass. thanks! Scot p.s., is there any Wheel Horse DNA in this Toro?
-
1 pointI don't own anything that new, but from the reports I'v seen on here the 520Lxi is the Cadillac of the line. The whole setup looks like new, and I'm sure it isn't too overpriced considering condition.
-
1 pointA tractor model number would ensure the correct belt but here is a start. Click on the picture. You need a belt designed to work over a flat idler pulley like the Gates green belts. Garry

1 pointWhat recoil are you planning to use on this engine. Kohler, Fairbanks Morse, Tecumseh, or Schnacke? Might be a good idea to post up a pict here... to be sure you source the right cup that works with it.
-
1 pointYou can use a short cup for Tecumseh . There cheap , plentiful as are the recoils and they bolt right on . http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tecumseh-HS60-6-HP-Go-Kart-Mini-Bike-Tiller-STARTER-CUP-Ships-FREE/272551479350?_trksid=p2047675.c100009.m1982&_trkparms=aid%3D888007%26algo%3DDISC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D44730%26meid%3D17ef0743a05e4a0fbda3dbcff27c3912%26pid%3D100009%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D2%26sd%3D292156186094

1 pointIt is not too often that a club in Wisconsin chooses to have Wheel Horse as one of their feature tractors. I just wanted to invite every one to help cover the show grounds with 's. This would be a great show to meet up with old friends as well as friends that you haven't met yet. Give a shout out if you think you can make it to the show.

1 pointFor me being a supporter is less about how many photos I can post and more about saying thanks to all the people who keep this site running for us. I had attempted gaining information on other sites and was not impressed, then I spoke to a fellow owner at a show and he told me about RedSquare. My first post was answered promptly and I was given a wealth of information in addition to a dozen or more welcomes. A few weeks later the subject of being a Supporter came up in a post and it seemed like a no-brainer to become a supporter.
-
1 pointI can only tell stories. I got a million of them. So many in fact people think I make them up!
-
1 pointIf you want to party at the show, stay at the same hotel as me, Rich, Steve, and Aldon. Tailgating at it's finest! Why at the Bus Stop of course!
