8 pointsThis is my first Wheel Horse garden tractor. I've always liked the design of these horizontal-shaft tractors. About 4 years ago we bought a larger property and got a cheap used lawn tractor for mowing and pulling stuff around, it worked good enough. But 2 weeks ago the engine crapped out, so I decided on getting a larger tractor. After looking for a week or so, I found a 416-8 with the Kohler Magnum, 866 hours. I took a look and it seemed decently maintained, everything seems to work but it definitely needed a tune-up. Next thing I know I'm heading home with it. Yesterday I took care of a lot of maintenance items: New Air Filter / Pre-Filter New Spark Plug Oil Change Cleaned everything really good Drained fuel tank of unknown age gas The only thing wrong with it right now is once you go a little past half throttle it sputters out a bit and doesn't run quite right, I have heard it backfire (not really loud) if I lower the throttle quickly. But it runs very well from idle up to half throttle and seems really torquey. I was thinking the carb is due for a cleaning, but this is my first Wheel Horse, first Kohler, etc. I would love to hear anyone else's opinion. Tomorrow I could record a video too if that helps, and of course get some better pictures.

5 pointsAfter rereading this thread a couple of times it appears the topic has changed to the conversational abilities of 3 members @857 horse, @squonk and @Big_Red_Fred. Since I have not met Big_Red_ Fred but have been entertained by the other gentlemen (?) perhaps there could be wagers on who takes the first breathe and a grand wager if Howard's lady friend from last year joins in. I know Mike breathes between paragraphs so an accurate stop watch will be needed . All that is needed is a volunteer to handle stop watch duties and keep track of the wagers . I am sure someone will provide hearing protection. I nominate the Rock and Rye king since he will be in his cup and really does not hear too well any way.

5 pointsHere is a drawing that will get you headed in the right direction. It is not for the starter/generator, but the "R" terminal of the ignition switch would go to the Battery (center) terminal of the voltage regulator. The solenoid output that is shown going to the starter would go to the "A" post of the S/G. This S/G wiring diagram may be of some use to you. Hope this is helpful.

5 pointsThere are features I like about all my tractors, but if I could only have one, here are some reasons it would be a C-160. 1. just like the clean hood design 2. prefer points, coil ignition 3. prefer solid mount engine over rocker plate 4 . prefer high fuel tank over under the seat...with a full tank, they run w/o a fuel pump 5. the single Kohlers use less fuel than similar HP twins 6. and they produce less heat 7. they have adequate HP to handle any task....tilling, blowing, 48"deck 8. I prefer hydros with the console mounted motion control....easier to add my foot control

4 pointsHere is a pic or 3 of the mechanism. The CONE does not turn, due to the WOODRUFF key holding it. You need to release and remove the spring and center parts to get at the TINY WOODRUFF key. The WOODRUFF key also stops you from driving out the center shaft. DO NOT CUT THE SHAFT. I can provide replacement parts...and the 5996 nylon cam too.

3 pointsMy C160 has been my worker of choice until the past couple years when odd issues have made it somewhat unreliable. I think it is a better looking, more comfortable tractor than my 300/400 series tractors and it does use less fuel than the 16hp Onan twin. I am hopefully going to have some time this winter to work out the quirks this machine has developed so it will be my go to machine again next summer. Nothing major, just some electrical issues and the adjustment collar is frozen on the shaft for the motion control lever (was like that when I bought it). Still debating on whether or not to paint it. It is the last tractor I would part with even with the issues.

3 pointsPlus it is almost impossible for arthritic hands to install an ignition switch with two stiff battery cables attached. Yep, the hydraulic lift is a must for old worn out hands.

3 pointsThe old gas probably was regular ethanol added gas and has left nasty little deposits in the fuel system. buy a can of Seafoam fuel additive and mix it with some ethanol free gas at twice the rate called for on the can. Also, a few shots of carburetor cleaner directly into the air intake of a running engine (throttle open as far as you can get it) may clear some internal deposits. I did this six years ago on one of mine and have had no further problems.

3 pointsI'll have to agree with @Ed Kennell I have at the moment 4 running wheelhorse tractors and my favorite is my C160. I love the hydro and the hydro lift. It is simple to work on and it can move mountains of snow. My 2000 314-8 is a really nice tractor but a pain to work on. My 67 lawn ranger is for fun. And my 77 B80 is like the c160 in every way except it lacks the power of its big brother the c160. I like the design of it over the black hoods and as for all the safety switchs on the later models nothing but a pain in the butt. I think it's a good looking tractor.

2 pointsMake sure that the belt is the correct length and width, and that it is fabric covered. Most guys swear by the Toro/Wheel Horse brand. Check the guides on the engine and belt cover. Check pulleys on both the engine and the transmission to be sure they are clean. If the return spring is too strong, and the damper weak, that can be a problem. The position of the clutch pedal can also be a factor for some drivers.

2 pointsCheck the implement chart for snow blower numbers. Other later blowers may work if they have the correct mounting kit. There was a kit that uses the front attach a matic, one that bolts to the frame, and one that is only used on the GT series

2 pointsI use a digital cuff I bought at a CVS pharmacy. It's battery powered. My wife also has the same model. Never had a problem with either. http://www.cvs.com/shop/home-health-care/monitors/blood-pressure-monitors/cvs-health-premium-automatic-blood-pressure-monitor-prodid-1170285?skuId=800230 I would point out there may be some minor variations in readings between whatever you choose, and a pressure which may be noted at a medical professional's office. Those differences are insignificant. By using the same cuff at home consistently, you see and track trends, be they up or down or constant. Its consistency within a reasonable margin of variation that you should be watching for. If you suddenly get a huge swing up or down in BP, and it continues for some time, you probably should consult your physician.

2 pointsThe throttle shaft and the hole in the carb housing wear over time. A new shaft fixes half the wear area. By adding the washers your moving to a part of the throttle shaft that is not worn and the washers become an unworn part of the housing.

2 pointsThanks for all the welcome posts and the information. Much appreciated. I will get the pics up soon so you can see it. I have a swisher 44" finish mower that I pull offset to my JD with 48" belly mower. I plan to buy another swisher and pull 2 mowers on my acreage and let the Wheel Horse just loaf along. The hydrostat will work perfect for that. Jim

2 pointsI have an M12 also that runs fine, but if any of my K12s lose fire, I know I can easily and inexpensively make the repair and restore the fire. With the points, I also have the ability to fine tune the timing.

2 pointsAbsolutely! Great looking tractor! I remember reading someone commenting that they would never own a "black hood" and I wondered why? A Wheel Horse is a Wheel Horse! Who cares about the hood! Took me awhile, (oh heck I still don't know why he said that!) but I do like the older hoods better for some reason! More like the older farm tractors of my time I suppose. Great looking! Simple! Clean lines! Love 'em! I suppose that helps explain why with all my choices I very often hop on my C-85 (C-81 is sick...). It's such a simple and dependable tractor that sips a bit of gas from time to time, or it just evaporates, don't know but still gets the job done somehow (but it doesn't blow snow!). I do love the older WHs even though I really love the newer ones too! How does a guy decide? Side note. A friend of mine here on the forum, (yes you know how you are!) commented that there was no need to have more than one GT. I think he has 6 or so now! Oh maybe 5! It's not an addiction! But rather a progression of knowledge! <chuckle!> But really! The more you learn that even if there is one best overall, there are different tasks so the more Wheel Horses you need!

2 pointsThey have removable lenses that let it be a spot or a flood. May make one of each on each side and have separate switches for each pair. That requires planning and I haven't got that far yet.

2 pointsThanks guys. Your comments keep me going. I got out today burning some yard debris left from the hurricane and in between loads I snuck over and wired my "new" 16hp Kohler. After that I was eyeing the fenders that I needed to fix from previous owners drilling them holes in them for spot lights. I got an idea I saw reading an old post about putting lights under the fenders. Well I put mine in them. First one I cut too low so I had to weld up my hole with the metal I removed from the top. I just moved them all the way up. Still have to weld the mounting brackets to the back of the buckets but at least the hard part is done. Once the fenders are all bolted back together and straightened, the lights should be straight across. Still have some hammer bumping and fine sanding to do. Better than I expected.
