Big THANKS! to daveoman1966 for helping me get some needed parts to get the new style deck adapted to my 1276 Tractor, and to replace a worn out drive belt idler pulley and linkage. Thanks again Dave!

I can smile about things, but I'm high and dry. And I have a laptop to work from home with. Right now, all roads leading north to where I work are closed, but as I said, I can work from home. There are others, though, who can't so those will lose some pay. Also, and the worst part, there are those whose homes are under water, or may be cut off from getting to stores, etc. My prayers for those. This about the third 500 year flood we seen here in Missouri since 1993. There are over built levees upstream on a lot of these rivers by farmers trying to protect their land, their livelihood. Understandable, but it just makes things a lot worse downstream where no levees can hold back the raging rivers and streams. It ain't nice to mess with Mother Nature, as the old TV ad used to say.

Bad model? UUUMMMHHH...does not compute...No such thing as a "bad model" WH... Besides - 30 years of faithful service? Seems like you answered your own question!

I have a 1970 Electro "12" automatic, model 1-7255, I do not see very many reports on this model. Was this a bad model for some reason? I have had mine about 30 years, with a 42 inch side discharge mower, 42 inch snow plow and a 36 inch rotor-tiller, it has always done it all for me!! This Horse will always have a stall in my barn! .

Recently someone asked which hole the clutch pedal return spring goes into. Found this. Garry

Massive flooding in the midwest. I-55 is closed now at the Meremec River in Arnold, Missouri. I-44 is also closed at Valley Park, plus numerous other road closings due to flooding from the monsoons over the weekend. And to top it off, it's raining, yet again.

Well now you did it. Now we'll have to change all the part numbers, come up with new drawings, submit material prices & manufacturing cost to the bean counters get new approvals from Mother Mary & Joseph....... Hey Tigs did you know you are missing some engine tins? Hopefully they didn't come off on that last run thru the sound barrier!?!?!?
  12. 4 points
Well, as they say in my trade, I did an "Engineering change" on the cover today. The cover should work out alot better, not causing problems with the hood grill area. Fortunately I know a guy that welds aluminum.

As long as they both continue to buy 1 tractor per year- Jim will never catch Steve.

Decided to put only (1) Gusset inside the bucket for support as two would be WAY OVERKILL. Internally welded all seams on the inside of the bucket and installed the bucket brackets. The next step will be to install gussets to the bucket brackets for support. I have a 1/2" X 4" Wide X 48" Long Knife edge for the Bucket ordered for the leading edge of the Bucket. That will be here Monday. Have plenty of brackets and parts to weld so there is no loss for work that's for sure.

How do the guys in polishing feel about 12 paks & summer sauage??
  17. 3 points
Now There's an idea there Dan but it looks like he already primered it so I think is going red. Ain't there 'posed to a tin over the top of the head??? or is that what you meant? I dunno AL sure does polish nice!!!
  18. 3 points
LOL , not missing any engine tin except for the the flywheel cover/belt cover. Hope to find one or make up one for the K161. You are right about all the changes a Engineering change involves at work..... for sure.

You know the stupid things PO's do to tractors Steve! Really when I first joined here I was what WHX3!?!?!? Denny's free suburban FROM MINNESOTAgot me WHX4..... my my how these things breed! I will blame it on the MN crowd...I'm trying to keep up with the neighbors! As far as chasing girls Cindy says ...well I will tell you about that in Local Circle! Good one Mike...solving that one requires counting to 21... have to get my shoes off!

Well said Bob. I’ve lost count of the number of times somebody has contacted me and starts in telling me what’s happening and what he has already tried and I end up starting out my end of the conversation by saying “whoa! Back the truck up. What are we working on?” Troubleshooting 101, step 1, what are you working on? That goes for any field of work. We kinda got sidetracked here. Now that we know what motor we are talking about my thoughts go to the CH15 I have. I’ve never had the issue with it but I’m thinking about the little quirks that are different from the K-series, B&S, etc. Unfortunately I can’t add anything constructive to what already has been suggested. I think @Mower Man has some good information that will eventually lead him to the problem.

Some of our members here are collectors, others are restorers, many are tinkerers, there are loads of mechanics with collectively 1000's of hours of experience working on small engines, and there are just as many who don't have any idea which end of a screwdriver is the business end. We are all Wheel Horse lovers. For that reason we as a group will try our best to help anyone with a problem. Therefore, knowing what we are dealing with is the first key to finding the solution. Of the 15,000 members out there, one may just have the same model with the same engine who has had the same problem. That is why I asked the question.

Was the PTO on? Is the oil level low? Take a small jumper wire from the battery "+" to the small terminal on the solenoid that is tied to the ignition switch; this bypasses the safety switches and if it cranks will tell you the starter and solenoid are not the problem.

    Mine is missing 3 wheels.?????

My $100 520 I just recently got did something similar. Although when it ran it was ok but idled rough and was hard to keep running when moving. Then I noticed seat switch dash light would come on forward or reverse and found that the switch was barely making contact. Once I fixed that it ran better both idle and rolling. Then I had charging issue running less than 10 volts on the dash gauge. I checked the wiring and corrected some connections but it was replacing the regulator to get back to proper charging. I would for sure check and clean switch connections and make sure they are making connected when in gauged.

For the starting, wiggle the motion control lever, sometimes it's not exactly positioned.

A few small items needed attending to before my creation headed off to the hydraulic pipe doctor. Wiring the ignition, ammeter, lights was a temporary fix, just to get life and test out how it would perform. I decided the throttle/choke would be best placed down under the seat as shown, basically once the engine is put to work with a hydro the throttle can be set and left alone, so putting it here would save Buying long cables and trying to route them up to the dash. I purchased two LED work lights and with the old seat support bracket made up some mounts. Of course I forgot about the light mount till the machine was stripped down again, so best guess was about here. Then one sunny morning the ILS was placed on the trailer for its appointment with the pipe man. (don't worry I strapped it down). Couldn't resist the 'what's in your mirror' shot, must look a little strange as you all seem to drive on the wrong side of the road. Later on and it returns all piped up and ready for trials. And there we have it, the journeys end, well all bar the grinding and brushing and painting....uuaagh. I'm gonna leave you hanging now until it's done, Thank you all for following along and as Arnie would say 'I'll be back'.

Steve has 40 tractors and Jim has 10. He has 4 times as many tractors as Jim. They go 5 yrs. Steve has 45 tractors and Jim has 15. Steve has 3 times as many tractors. They go another 15 yrs. Steve has 60 tractors and Jim has 30. Steve has 2 times as many tractors as Jim. Question: How many more years will it take for Jim to have as many tractors as Steve? It's ok. Take your time figuring it out!

I sharpen once a year using angle grinder with a flap wheel. Just need to use caution as you can remove material fast. I just make light quick passes over the cutting edge. Prob not the preferred method but works for me

I just have to ask the guys in the polishing department. Actually just ran in though the glass bead cabinet, so ready for any type finish.....
  31. 2 points
Now will it get a high polish finish!?!?!?!
  32. 2 points
At the price of blades mine get sharpened for a long long time. If you are getting streaks of uncut grass you may have the wrong blades or they have been sharpened too many times. or incorrectly sharpened shortening them a tad.

i sharpen mine about every 3rd time i mow. I would try that before i bought new

Well I couldnt stand it or let it go untouched. I cut the plate from the outer sleeve and rewelded it. Covered it with some Regal Red yesterday. Its all in today. Figured Id do while I had the engine and mounting plate off. All straight now!

it was one of the more top of the line tractors, but also very similar to the charger 12. it was a option loaded tractor with the electric clutch and hydro with hydro lift and maybe some other things thrown in there. so i my opinion, which that and a dollar might buy you a cup of coffee, was more expensive and probably sold less then the chargers. I bought one, one time for the rare factory inside wheel weights. the pore old tractor had set out side in the weather to long and had a blown motor so I parted it out. got any pictures ? eric j

I'll help you solve the problem Buzz just bring it to the show and i'll take it off your hands. seriously just check the the safety switches, sometimes it only takes a bump to get it to start. the cheater way to start is to check for voltage to the coil, if present pull the blue wire off the starter and jump to from that terminal on the starter to the battery cable on the starter and she should crank over. did the flashing light stop after a few seconds and then were any left lit. the one that stays on is the problem switch except for the oil light it will stay flashing till it sees oil pressure. good luck and hope to see you at the show this year eric j

I have used the imported kits as well with excellent results and more money left in my pockets. Just remember that many Kohler parts are no longer made in the USA and are coming from Mexico and China. Buying OEM does not always mean buying American.
  39. 2 points
The mere fact that you asked this question "... is this equipped with an electronic shut off valve?" requires someone to know what the model is and what engine is on it.
  40. 2 points
It's not irrelevant to want to know what model tractors he has, and what engine is on it. Not all problems boil down to a "one size fits all" fix.
  41. 2 points
The parts you are looking at are not OEM parts. I used to use OEM parts on my Kohler rebuilds. The aftermarket parts were sometimes less than favorable on their quality. Now days who knows where the OEM parts are made. Myself I can not justify what Kohler is asking for their parts. The last couple of rebuilds I have done I have used aftermarket parts. They seem to be working ok. OEM parts at 3 times the price of Aftermarket is to me just insane. Unless there is something magical about them I don't know, and since my motors are not being built to start in the Indy 500. I'll stay away from funding Kohler's CEO's retirement fund. Don't be scared to use aftermarket, you'll be just fine.

Install the points and turn the engine over bu hand. Observe the points and the plunger that opens them, when the plunger reaches the furthest open position you will be able to set them at .020 to.018". This static timing will set them for proper timing. Kohler static_timing.pdf

Very good chance it's a bad Seat Safety switch, but being a 520 could be a whole host of simple things. A bad seat switch will keep it from doing anything.

I would suggest you keep the mowing deck to go with the tractor you keep as backup for your zero, and hold the other one till Autumn. It's a snow machine so it's out of season to sell for best price now. Sounds like you might have a youngster who may want to help one day. Oh and

It's a great find for sure...been repainted, but that's OK. The pulleys have to be there. Why would anyone pull those off and put on a single pulley?? So, is this going to make you WHX12?? And to think I knew you when you were just 4...where does the time go?? Pretty soon you will be chasing girls.

Just went through this exact problem on a 12 horse kohler last week. First tried spark plug, condensor, coil, and a fuel filter and it finally turned out to have a very small pinhole in the float.

Ya when I picked it up they had half a tore up belt on the middle space of engine pulley and running g back. Not sure the thought they had there. And to Tim's Tractors, I will say your correct. Definitely can't get enough!
