Well I was sitting in garage today waiting to go to work and I had the set of 8 inch hub caps from the 520 sitting on the shelf for display until I found a tractor to put them on... then it clicked! And ranger got some much needed chrome! Now I just need the tiny front hub caps.

I was looking through some old pics and thought I would share a picture of the Radio Flyer I redid for my grandson. I bought this for his Dad when he was little from a garage sale. Paid $10 I think. Its a Radio Flyer 2000 from the early 70's. They didn't make too many and you can't find many pictures on line. This was my grandsons first birthday. He will be two in May. Here is a picture of his Dad in the same wagon. Randy

Had some weight brackets made up, one is an RJ58 tombstone bracket and the others and a front weight kit bracket. Time for paint now, the front weight kit brackets will each be going on a c195 and the RJ bracket will be on dads RJ58

Sunday I decided it was time to get the tractors ready for the nice weather. Took the 44" blower off the 3/15 first, then the dozer off the 12. Chains came off the 15 haven't gotten to the 12 yet, the cast iron will remain though. I used the 15 to haul my trailer, blower and a couple rakes and my old power thatcher today. Got all the dead grass up then blew it into the woods. So much easier to operate without 350lbs out front. The kids love the tractors and why not?

There is a little jeep forklift in town that I will try to get a picture of. The guy reversed everything, including the transmission,so he has 8 speeds in reverse--err forward---depending on where Dennis' butt goes The guy is quite a character and just builds everything he needs-- including a car crusher. I am afraid that if he ever quits or passes, the little yard where he cuts and scraps stuff might be a Superfund site due to maybe PCB's or who knows what seeping into the ground. The city fathers are too busy regulating the wrong stuff to have a clue what is happening right under their noses. There is a gas station right by the Ethanol plant in a zero foot traffic area. Construction has ceased because the city got the land annexed and is demanding sidewalks. Just one of many examples....

Nothing makes an Engine run as good as Draining out the GLUE! The 522XI came home Saturday and today had to do some much needed maintenance. Warmed it up good degreased the tractor engine, drive train all underneath front to rear with 4 cans of Gunk Foamy Engine cleaner. Drained the Glue and put on a new filter and filled it up with the best. Changed the filter and pre filter. Tomorrow will do the hydro the same as the engine.

Not too old, but pretty high numbers on the hour meter.

And ohiofarmer, your experiences are all to common, doesn't matter where you live, I think they call it 'progress'. Right now though iiittttsssss loader time, with the help of the cat, (I love my cat) I swopped the subframe for the tractor on the bench and then promptly stripped it down to axles, frame and engine, having already done a bit of measuring. I split the frame from the transmission, blocked it up then wrestled the subframe back into place, first seat mock up But with nothing to go from, steering wheel wise. And the engine was a pita so I got rid of that. l placed the whole steering unit in place. And of course because it's a it slotted right in. So, bearing in mind I wanted to keep the wheel base as short as possible the first thing to work out was the position of the fan gear for the steering. This means lengthening the steering wheel shaft so I wasn't banging my hands against the loader towers. Adding a seat on the beer crate made it more... comfortable. A picture from the other side, and I felt I was on the right track. The bit of measuring I did earlier, (before tearing the tractor to pieces) involved the placement of the transmission belt idler. I would have to replicate this...so I did. It is removable, you just have to separate the tractor frame from the subframe to get clearance. Tomorrow we'll touch on steering and tractor frame.

I've sold three of the front reel mowers at past big shows... let the buyer set the price...complete set up fetched from $250-300.

@Jake Kuhn sells all of the bearings, bronze, seals and gaskets as a kit. He is in Michigan, and I am sure he would ship the whole kit over to you. It looks like most of your gears are OK. If anything, I would try to find a better input shaft gear and a different 1st/rev fork gear. The whole thing should clean up real good.

A fun way to dethatch!

Came home to this brand new 7x16 enclosed trailer sitting in my driveway! This is a huge upgrade from my tiny 6x8 open snowmobile trailer lol! Will be towing my horses in this to the big show. Working on painting the walls and putting black and white checkered vinyl flooring on the floor!

Sometimes one should consider adding just a little ATF in with the oil. Let her run and get warmed up and then drain the oil. You will be amazed at the junk that will come out and how much longer your new oil (after dumping the oil/ATF mix) will stay clean. ATF is a highly refined oil and an excellent cleaner and it won't hurt a thing. I would think that any avid collector wouldn't mind a oil change with ATF simply to clean the inners. It costs a little bit but my experience is it really cleans and makes your new fixture one that might last just a little longer because its cleaner. As most probably have realized there are a lot of engines on mowers out there that haven't been service like they should have been. Yes, I also feel the engine seems to run better and makes a little more power because its a happy clean engine.

I have followed quite a few of the projects in this section of Redsquare and notice that many contributors name their creations, having given it some thought I've settled on 12 Automatic ILS (Industrial loading shovel) as I think this may have been how wheel horse would possibly have badged it. That is of course, if they had ever produced such a thing! Also one other thing that I failed to explain as a reason for building a ILS and not a FEL. Many members on RS have FEL's on their tractors and rarely if ever take them off, and with four other tractors myself I'd do the same. So sacrificing a tractor to be a purpose build loading machine made sense to me. Anywho in tonight's brief episode....welding the subframe towers and boom. Boom pivot plates at the top of the towers. bottom of of the towers and the bottom lift ram mount. This picture shows the driving axle lower clamp plates. (the angle was spot welded on the subframe to maintain square, later removed) And another view of the same. Back to the tractor tomorrow, Thanks for following along.

Saw this on CL and was wondering if they were from the factory with a Briggs. I had thought I read somewhere that Kohler was in the midst of a strike so they were putting these in some models or is this a repo? Id be all over this for the price if it had a Kohler

I got a soft heart for the old tired ones but the price was too good to pass up. I will dig into them this weekend and see if they both will fire up after new plugs, cleaned carb and fresh fuel. 1994 314h with 900+ on it; All four hub caps 1991 520h with 1200+ on it; All four hub caps 2x 42" SD Deck. Both spin and are quiet that I could tell in the spindles.

Its a mess indeed but at this point actual engine may also be a mess. You should then in the very least take the head and pan off and see what it looks like in there before you go through the trouble and expense in converting an engine to points just to find out that more serious stuff is wrong with it. There are K321s out there running for a reasonable price.It all depends how much time ,money and effort you want to spend with that one.You still don't know how the hydro is also, and that could make or break the whole thing. I believe the easiest thing right now without spending any money and with the least effort is to see if there is spark from that system. Not too difficult.Refer to my answer to your last post on thread #1. If there is spark you can at least start engine and check everything else. If not you then have bigger decisions to make.It all comes down to common sense, time and money. I have been guilty in the past of not having enough of the first one and too much of the other two.

I believe some of the '74s had Teckys in them. Buy it, change the plug, clean the carb and you'll probably be happy with it. It looks pretty well cared for.

If the price is right, jump on it and re-transplant!

Purchased the set new from a going out of business warehouse. Did pull the gang easily with an 8 hp Horse. The idea is, riding, whatever machine, mow, mow, mow. Slow down (mow less often) a bit during dry weather; i.e.: August. Was studying agronomy at Penn State at the time, my lawns were textbook.

@Adams94, thanks all I needed were the dimensions as I can fab 1 up where I work, just didn't want to go into it too blindly, here's the ones I made for plowing ect to hang suitcase weights on, again thanks Jeff.

Jack up one rear axle at a time so all the oil runs to the other side. Change seals on the high side, then reverse for the other side.

The trailer weighs 1400 pounds empty. I can pull it up hills that I can't stop on, if I stop it will drag the tractor backwards.

Is it just just my imagination but do motors just seem to run run best on a fresh oil change?!?!

I finally got around to mounting 1 set of new tires front and rear on my "Good Friday" 520H after 22 years the original Dico brand were weather/dry cracked through the sidewalls only tubes were holding the air inside, @HorseFixer, Duke the 23x10.50-12 Nanco brand Ags mounted out to 9.5" not 10.50" but still more than 8" wide ,I don't think you would've been happy with that for your set up, but I'm OK with them being a bit narrow, means a bit more traction and bit less flotation for my intended purposes mowing,gardening, and snow pushing. The fronts are Trac Gard 16x7.50-8 turfs they were an PITA to seat the beads but got it done, had tire shop do the rears, also did inside MF approximately 45# and outside weights CC 30# on them and put my one off powder coated wheel covers on (they hide the "blue" weights that were originally MF red) all this today since I'm on 4-10 hour days now Friday is going to be project day, anyways here the goods, Jeff.

I left it out by the tree today while I went inside til him and his mother got home, I didn't notice it was raining lightly... well I went out to meet them as they got home and he was crying badly... because I left his tractor in the rain lol

@WVHillbilly520H Jeff how much weigh does your bracket hold?

The wide 520H rims are only 8.5" wide. You MAY be ok with the deestones since they run small, but i know most recommend 10" rims with 12" wide tires.

I had two of those set up as gang mowers for a while. One for the wife & one for my son.

Check a couple of the safety switches IE the neutral under the steering wheel PTO and seat, the "Good Friday" 520 I picked up last year would start without a jumper either till I finally tracked it down to the neutral switch which BTW was technically working just missing the actuator arm, Jeff. 1st pic missing arm 2cd new switch.

Things are moving slow lately around here having a new addition. I got the boys outside this weekend to give momma and the 4 week old some much needed quiet time. They are especially excited to work on this tractor since I tell them stories about working on it and using it when I was a boy. I have been around this tractor for two decades and I never knew it had the rear rock shaft, tube, and lift cable already! Bonus! I always saw the clevis in the back but never knew it was for lifting. We missed out on so many opportunities not knowing what kind of things were available for this tractor! Got it fairly cleaned up (this will be a worker for quite a few years until it gets refurbished). The two different ags bother me to some extent, but they do just fine. Items I need and will be searching around for or posting here: One head bolt for the K341 - Not sure how I lost one, but it is what it is. All front wheel bearings - Need to do some work on the rims to get them to hold the bearing better. New rubber isolators (gosh these are expensive, Not sure if I am not ready to go solid mount yet...) Fuel cap w/gauge rear light cover (or new rear lights) touch up paint to cover scratches until refurb K341 carb. (I have one that was painted but need to dig into see if it is worth it or not) Fuel pump rebuild kit K341AS dipstick Pack of speed clips for the bolts on the metalwork If anyone has any of the above message me! I will probably post a classified later.

I'm an Army guy, having served as a 12B, Combat Engineer. So, I'm a little out of my league when it comes to discussing Navy vessels. But, due to my job, I spent some time on Navy bases, and on a few Navy vessels, mostly Frigates. But, as I said, I was on the USS Missouri, and did go down into an aircraft carrier in San Diego to do some work on Harpoon missile related stuff. And I was on one, or in one submarine, boy was that a tight fit. Having said all that, I was impressed with the vessels I was on, and was impressed with how contain they were, as in, how life related stuff was contained when onboard and deployed on sea. I don't think that kind of military life would be for me, but I can understand the lure it may have on others. I do believe it's a good thing to spend some time in any branch of the military, it gives one some perspective to things other than themselves. This is a very cool thread.!!!!!

My son in law delivered the K90 motor over the weekend. So, now in my "not so spare" time, I can actually start working on the tractor. I am definitely going to need throttle and choke cables..and maybe controls? Here are a couple of pics of the engine setting in place on the chassis. Almost like it was designed to fit here!

By the way since this is my thread and I can go what kind of crack were we on when we checked that 241 bore.....come to find out it was already bored to .030! And I ordered rings for .010? I guess I should have sobered up and saw the .030 on top the piston instead of the .003 I thought my eyes had saw. Oh well $it happens... ain't been my first screw up and morn' likely wont' be my last! Richard...that's enough! So back to reel mowers. .. @Rp.wh has got him down to 275 on the mower, is that good? I have no clue.

Oh sweet Redhorse.... that's a beaut ..... we had a thread goin last year on outfitting. The checker board thing is always cool. If I was inclined to do a checker board floor it would be red & white but to each his own. We all did the bedliner floor for the non skid... the vinyl tiles can get quite slippery when the horse decide to pee on it! We were all camping in ours. Keep us posted and let us know if you would like to search for that thread. Mine was only a 14 footer but should have listened to @Shynon and went with a 16....oh well.

Well Mastiffman it sounds to me you've got everything under control and that's what I do when I get a new old tractor. But some guys don't understand what they got and what needs to be done to these machines to keep them running. I'm glad they both run I wanted to get them but I'm about done working on old machines that need a lot of work. I see you really want to fix and repair them just like I do. It's a lot of time and money to bring them back from the grave. But I love to get a great machine back to doing what it's meant to do. I still think the Wheel Horse is the best tractor ever built and no other brand has parts that fit so many different years and models B,C and 300-500, What Cecil Pond did for wheelhorse owners is unheard-of today.
