Today I came across a true barn find. these were offered to me, not cheap, havent run in years. what would you fellas do and consider? one rj, 4 lawn rangers, one commando 8, one GT 2500. and possibly a tall shoot single stage. you will see by the dust. I didnt take many pictures, but will go back for more. Enjoy the pictures I took, and please advise. like I said, pricey to. Glenn

Hey guys, I'm worn out - took my 2nd graders on a field trip today! Just wanted to share a couple pics of Emory's 60 and 61 suburbans along with my 61 rat rod. We got them out to play with yesterday. Had to have a little horse play! Even mowed the side of the driveway with Emory's 60.

Be wary.... this one does not appear to be an RJ, but rather a 1961 Suburban... either 401 or 551. I've circled some identifying marks.... 1961 decal suburban lift sector cast clutch pedal choke/throttle on left/right of steering column.

Any way you cut it Howard the Mash Pole and YOU are a Hit at the Big Show ! I Say Carry on this great New Tradition!

Howard's Mash Pole sign was a great idea and it certainly complimented the festive nature of the show. The club was even willing to store in their shed on site so it could be displayed again and again, so apparently they were very happy with it too. Unfortunately It kinda slipped my mind to make a sign for it while I was busy building a tractor but that won't happen again this year. Now that everyone saw it, It might be so popular that one will be needed for each corner of the infield. And you don't need a more comfy chair Howard. By the evidence presented, you'll end up missing more of the show!

I have the enhanced "Mash Pole Sign" ready to go. You do need a more comfortable chair Howard, almost missed your nap.

Ok guys, you got me. I have bad ankles ... flat feet, tendonitis, will require surgery some day. There are days when it hurts too badly to fully depress the clutch pedal. On those days, the bracket below the engine is one end of a double pulley I attach to the clutch pedal. I thread a rope with a handle through the pulleys and before you know it I have a hand-clutch. Not pretty, but it works! I guess if the rope is long enough, my wife could use it as a tensioner on her clothes line !!!

IMO that 551 is worth $150 all day long. I'd leave it just like it is with all the mechanicals repaired and drive it right to a show! But rusty & crusty is appealing to me!

I think it comes down to a question you can only answer. " If you buy the lot at a reduced price , could you sell what you don't want , keeping what you do want and come close to breaking even " or the bigger question how many years will you spend in the dog house.

OK.....this might sound ,,,uh ,,,,,any way,,,,,,,,I ask my wife,, if she wanted to go next year (2017) she has never went.......and she said yes...!!!!! This got my thought process started....... 1 I will make suttle changes to the Mash Pole,,,,if enough of you want it back....N,S,E,W.......looked ok to me....but sum Mash Pole sign owners had issue with just 4 places on the pole.... so,,,we're gonna fix that....... 2. I liked being able to put names with faces....im working on that......fixed really,,,,,just letting the clock tick... 3, I really dont like the folding chairs we bring ....they are really un comfy,,,,So i will find some old folding chairs like we grew up with....the legs dont poke thru the ground and you can take a better Nap....they are still out there ,,,,,just have to look.... 4, My tent got sprung in the wind this past year....I already have a new one...... 5,, I am started on my 867 resto already.....I have pics.....dis- assembly is on the camera.and .It looks like the 401-8 will stay home this year....and 2 85-somthings will come.... 6,,,,am i missssing anything???? 7,, i have a feeling,,,,the turn 2 in-field is going to be packed this year...Where else do you find a Trac Chair and Lawn Tractr cycles.??

Got to agree with Aldon, unless There was a special that I "HAD to have" I would be inclined to walk away unless I could get the whole lot at $100 each and then clean them a bit and go out on and hope the wife would not complain too much.

Look at us , it just into November and we're already thinking of the big show . @Ed Kennell that chair looks awful comfy I need one . Howard...who's the cool dude on the track chair, nailing the teeter totter...now that's talent ! Hopefully next year he'll be on a modified A-81 .

I was going to say a more comfy chair may cause HOWWWAAARRRDDDD! to miss the entire show! Especially if he stays at the Comfort Inn and engages with the late night bench talk show

"Gentleman" boy you don't know me...! Is the electric one a E-81 , that would be a good one just to play around with , go to the mailbox , drive around shows . They're all jewels in my book . Some of us like them shiny , others in there working clothes . It's all in the eye of the beholder .

I don't think this is a waste of time...it's the hoard every Horseoholic dreams of ! Barn finds...all dirty and prirty with lots of pics and you know we love pics . I'd bring home the nut roaster (because everyone needs one) , the most original ranger ....who'm I kidding I'd bring them all home and figure it out later . You could bring them to the big show do some wheeling-n-dealing , who knows what you could bring home .

Since you asked... As much as I like working on these things I'd pass unless "pricy" became "cheap". Or at least wholesale pricing. Unless there was something in the package deal I especially wanted. That would be different. Otherwise you will have headache cleaning, fixing at unknown cost and time/trouble of distributing this stuff. Oh....and storing. While I would like a Ranger at some point, I would want one correct.

ok, I just got back from taking more pictures. I tried to crawl around as good as I could. I came across an eletric whell horse, a C series 10 hp and 2 plow blades. the rj is a hundred bucks, all other pieces are 150 each. what will I do? I dont know, keep the advice coming in. my wife ( the boss ) doesnt care what I do....lucky me.. You guys can see. the green one has no motor, other ones,,,,I dont know how complete. been in the barn for years and years. the dirt tells that. the rj, no rear tires. dont know here, I am confused. but thats easy to do to me. ok, and on to the pictures. enjoy Glenn

OK...that gear will fit into most RJ transmissions, and Suburban Transmissions. Note: These are the 3 piece transmissions #5003 and #5010. Wheel Horse used the #3523 forked gear in both of these, but there was a point where they changed the number of splines on the spline shaft and they changed the number of splines in the 2 forked gears accordingly...but not the part number. You have to count the splines to know if this gear will work in your transmission. Lowell's gear is the 11 spline...the older model has 10. Lowell's gear will work in all the 2 piece, 3 speed uni-drives...except the trannys with bevel gear differentials. Lowell's gear will also work in all of the 4 speed, uni-drives. If you are not sure, check the parts list for the transmission that is on your horse...and count the splines. The service note is on page 12 in the transmission manual.

In case anyone is wondering, the metal pulley bracket attached to the frame is from the training wheels on my daughter's bicycle 25 years ago. Think twice before you throw away a good piece of wood or metal - there is usually another purpose for it if you just wait a while.

From a gunsmiths forum I ran across a post about penetrating oils. A scientific test was performed with most available oils. WD40 was not so effective. Kroil and PB Baster worked well. The best performer was a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone. I mixed up a squirt bottle full and have been using it with good success on my C160. I'm impressed. Anyone else ever heard of it or tried it?? Mark.

Hi Glenn, I am familiar with the machines you seem to like to collect and the conditions of the machines you like to collect. From what I can tell, like me, you seem to like the larger. more muscular, twin cylinder, smoother running primo tractors. Maybe it is the Harley in your genes that leads you in that direction. I would also get excited stumbling onto that find but those are in a whole different collector category. They are all neat machines if you are into that category. I am not. I might be interested in the electric just because it is different, they appear to be very rare, and the world is going electric. Wheel Horse was way ahead of the game, and Elon Musk, with their electric category. Possibly with some strong batteries and new electric motors you may be able to own a primo electric that can cut your lawn and do wheelies at the shows? Even some motorcycles are going electric. Maybe someday Tesla will eventually develop an electric garden tractor line and offer them in red and even bring back the brand. Tesla Wheel Horse instead of Toro Wheel Horse? Oh well, good luck with whatever you decide. I am at the point where I have too many and don't have the time to love them all. My big D-200 is my current favorite low 400 hour, twin cylinder Kohler, primo, muscle machine to help me clear some land at the lake. Not a job for any of the machines I saw in the photos. So far, and this is a BIG MAYBE, I might take a ranger, the gt2500, the snowblower, the blades, maybe the C. Not sure on any of it yet. The wind was let out of my sails. I go from buying jewels to junk. I like jewels. Glenn Oh, I did find out, teckys did come in the Rangers, but you notice, one black teckys, one red teckys, which one is which. Ok finally I have a 1958 RJ that is doing what I wanted it to do! I can not thank Steve (Stevasaurus), Bob (Racinbob) , Jake and Doug Kuhn, and many others for the assistance, insights and suggestions as we entered into redoing these transmssions and this 1958 RJ I bought from Autin McCoid in Underwood, Iowa this January. Thanks to Paul (oldredrider) for the 4 HP Kohler that I put on this just a couple of weeks ago. I changed my Kohler as the motor I wanted to use was just not getting the amount of spark it needed -although it is a good motor I intend to use. I have one more RJ transmssion to rebuild, one that Steve rebuilt that is in this RJ I reworked and we asssited two other RJ rebuilds with parts, Racinbob is going to do a demo three piece RJ/Suburban transmssion for shows and demonstrations with some parts we traded for a good outer RJ/Suburban case. I was able to figure out my RJ brake band was the problem with me properly clutching the transmssion to change geara and also allow me to fit the proper drive belt guard on the RJ (after I made an alternative belt guard that worked but just wasn't wheel horse ) ! So I have the After shots first and the Before shots afterwards for your viewing. It may never reach a 10 rating out of 10 points but a good 7 or 8 and another saved RJ is an accomlishment to be proud of and she runs great.

That is some great engineering there! It's simple and doesn't interfere with other functions of the tractor. You've shown us how creative we can be when necessary and also have given a good idea to others who may find this modification useful. Thank you. P.S. I am always saving old pieces and parts of things like that for "just in case" projects. Just yesterday evening I cleaned off the work bench to work on the vacuum cleaner. I found a small 1/2 diameter coil spring on the bench while cleaning and I didn't know what it was from. So I threw it in with the spare parts stuff. The foot lever release on the vacuum wasn't locking in place any longer to lock the upright section. There was a plastic tab thing that had broken off underneath and I couldn't see any way to get to it to take it apart and even engineer anything to make it work. I had about given up when I remembered the little spring I had just found. So I was able to work it in under the foot lever from above and wa-la!! Now it works great!

Thanks guys, normal - what's that? Things are settling down a little, but life is still nuts! I took this picture in Dad's driveway. He's got plenty of room for the little guys to roam. I've been clearing out some of his fields where they've grown up around the edge and decided to take a break. Emory had a ball as we'd almost forgotten what fun his little tractors could be!

Yes they finally are done! Absolutely you can shift on the fly Jim however I don't recommend it, a person should still stop to shift. However should you want to I could have Terry make up some B&M or Hurst shifter decals for 3rd gear if you'd like.

We would never do that Jimmy D but whatsamatta wich you.......that is obviously an attachment for help in restringing his wife's clothes line poles... even an idiot like me can see that!!

Did those lawn rangers ever come with teckys? Does the GT look interesting? The snowblower looks good. To me anyway. I could take a ranger, but, you see the guy that scored that beauty for 200 bills? Wow..I feel like I am looking through the garbage can. Lol the 2 snow blades are mint, but I have 4 already. The C series 10 hp looks nice, but I forgot a picture of it. The electric One? Maybe? Geeeeeez, I think I find gold, now I feel like I stepped in a dog load. I feel like I shouldn't even have started the thread, wasting everyone's time here. Thanks guys! I bought the rat as a rolling chassis that had been neglected for years (trans. full of water, but not locked up). I decided to go a full on rat without disturbing the original tractor too much. I just used a scotch brite pad to knock the rust down and then shot it with clear. The hood had been lifted with a block of wood and I decided to make a wooden block and weld the headlight mounts to it. I think it looks pretty good. The biggest challenge was rusting the new metal I used to match what had occurred over the years. Pretty cool what a little vinegar, peroxide, and salt can accomplish! Best part is the straight pipe that ends in twin chrome tips under the transmission - almost sounds like a Harley!!!

Another thing I have found in these pumps is the diaphragm can get dried out and that affects its ability to prime. A little bit of oil in the inlet works to solve that for a considerable amount of time.
