Hello everyone- Just bought my first Wheel Horse so thought I would introduce myself in case I have any questions. I've always been a Bolens guy but could not pass this tractor up. Is a MY2000 314-8 with only 160 original hours. I wanted a hydrostatic but could not find this clean. Paid a little more than I wanted, about $1,250. But think it was worth it for such a clean and well maintained machine. I hear these things are really solid machines. Thanks everyone, looking forward to spending more time here on the forum!

Just went and picked-up this red GT. Owner said it's a LawnChief. Same color as a Wheel Horse! And the tiller is a Murray. He thought all the implements are Brinley. Everything can connect to the tractor. He said the carb needs cleaned. Probably..... there's no lens on the fuel gauge fuel cap. Acts like a funnel now. There's also another set of weights, chains and hitch attachment. Here's the pics. And I hauled it all home in the Caravan. (2 trips though)

Small update: Five tractors and some other stuff left here today. Feels nice to see some things go to new homes. Hopefully the guys feel like they did ok. That makes 8 that have left this summer. It's nice to make room, but even better to meet the folks who are into these things. Thanks to Barry and Heather, and Lane and Theresa for making separate 3+ hour drives to southern Illinois...one couple from southern mo, the other from the sweet corn capital of the prairie state. It was really nice talking about tractors and kicking rocks around in the driveway! one of the neat things is that while we share an interest in old red junk, we all seem to have different specific affinities. Still lots of stuff left. I'll try to keep making time and digging things out. You meet the nicest people on a wheel horse. Steve

Whenever I start a project, and after I have done an initial evaluation, I clean the beast. So, Phase I of C-175 resurrection has now been accomplished. Spent an hour or so scrubbing the tractor down and hosing it off. My philosophy has always been to get whatever machine I am working on, in as clean and presentable condition as possible. It is not near as nasty to work on, and it gives a sense of accomplishment out of the gate. Here is how the tractor looks now, sans mud, leaves, and a whole lot of greasy goo. Note in the photo of the dash, I have already begun the restoration: tractor now sports one of Glenn Pettit's key fobs. Was having so much fun, the 312 decided to join!

8-21-1959 Hawaii becomes 50th state The modern United States receives its crowning star when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs a proclamation admitting Hawaii into the Union as the 50th state. The president also issued an order for an American flag featuring 50 stars arranged in staggered rows: five six-star rows and four five-star rows. The new flag became official July 4, 1960. The 1056 I restored had an awful hood wobble. It came from the hinge pin pivot point in the front. The nylon was long gone and the hole on the hood was wallered out. When I checked the part for the nylon replacement they were 11 bucks a piece, and still nylon. I thought that could be improved upon. Went to Lowe's and got the brass bushing pictured. Had to drill the frame and hood for 1/2" and waller that a tad. Insert pin and secure with pins and presto, hood is solid as it can be. For about 7 bucks and 20 minutes work, if that.

Picked her up today. Model 10141.Not quite sure what year she is.was told it was a 1 owner the hour meter says 16 hours.Deck still has its stickers on it .Was the hour meter a factory option. Most I have seen don't have one.My dad had a round top that I used to mow with,Good times.

Been following your thread with much interest. First Hello and to the forum. Second, what a great idea to get a tractor for your dad, the same model he wished he hadn't sold years ago. Third, I too got what I would call taken on a tractor purchase from a guy in another state who convinced me over the phone that the package deal, 520H, tiller, snow thrower and mower deck were in excellent condition and I would not be disappointed and he was a collector who loved to travel with his wife and offered to deliver to my house for just the cost of his fuel.............. Everything was working, but everything needed LOT'S of work noisy, bearings, leaks and charging system and tach repaired,new belts, fluids, filters, and so on....... Sorry you got lied to and if it were me I would be careful buying anything else from the guy. If he said he has another engine but it smokes, does he really mean it started smoking and he kept running it till it was out of oil and it blew up. I hope you can save your motor without having to put a bunch of money in it. As far as I'm concerned he should just give you that other motor and an apology!

I was not aware there are pans without the tapped mounting holes. But If I had one, I would make two angle brackets bolted to the frame and the ears on the pan. Just not a fan of J-bolts on cantilevered cast iron ears.

Have brought the C-175 home, and in spite of the sorry state of the machine, I am both hopeful, and tickled. Without further ado, here are photos of the tractor freshly unloaded from the trailer. Thing was sitting in a mud hole beneath a bunch of trees, and certainly looks it. Mud, bugs, leaves, and twigs pretty well cover everything, along with some moss starting from the damp. First order is to wash it down to make it bearable to look at. Since the weather is supposed to be sunny and dry for the next few days, will leave it outside the garage to thoroughly dry out. Will then start making runs to the hardware store and NAPA to begin the process of bringing this beast back to life.

When I got to Mathews today my neighbor called me over to see his latest acquisition. He got an old JD (MTD) riding mower, a 314-8 with 800 hours on it with a fairly new 42" deck. The paint on the deck is still bright red, and it has the reinforcing rod around it. The deck wheels still look new and the wheel bearings don't even have any play in them. The tractors look as if they have been sitting for a while, but the gas didn't smell old so all he did was put a battery in them and they started right up! And the price?? $30.00!!!

$1250.....that might buy a new deck, and you got a new 314-8 for free.

I will pull the motor today. Hopefully nothing else was damaged. I will snap lots of pictures. Thanks for all of your help. Been texting with the guy who sold it to me. Told him the motor was broken. Refused to negotiate any refund, but offered to sell me another c-101 with a motor that smokes for $25 off the asking price. Said it ran when he parked it. Connecting rods don't break when the tractor isn't running, and whoever was operating it when it failed certainly knew that it happened.

I would guess a valve stuck open. Take the plug out and put a finger in the hole, crank it over and see if you have compression. Not too difficult to remove the head.

Today I took my father and kids and picked up a 606 with snow blade. Rolls good, steering seems good and the engine turned by hand. The hood is a little rough with a piece cut out of the left side and it is missing the hood latch. Spent some time emptying the small amount of old gas that was in it (I do not think the gas tank is original) and putting some fresh gas in. Then cleaned up the spark plug. I noticed that it does not have a choke cable (but I think it should). Pulled the pull start and got it to run for about 4 or 5 seconds. The motor blew out a lot of blue smoke. I know it will need some carb work, and since it is burning oil maybe some new piston rings. What do you all think? The pictures have my father and my son in then.

Hey fellas... I've been out of the wheel horse game for quite sometime now, however I moved back to NJ.... for now it is just temporary! So I was on a certain, and stumbled across a page that looked like it had some wheel horses in the back ground... Made contact with the guy, and I took a 30 minute ride... Upon speaking to the owner, he used to work for a wheel horse dealer, and has been collecting wheel horses and parts for about 30 years! Well anyways here are some pictures... He only has one round hood, just about everything else is B, C, 300, 400, 500 series tractors and 1 D-160 two cylinder that needs quite a bit of work but is complete with a rear pto, 3pt hitch, and a rototiller. It has a snow plow but I am buying it for a project so hands off! He also has no wheel weights. BEST OF ALL! Everything is for sale! Also has some other brands of tractors as can be seen, but mainly wheel horses.

That depends on what you want! If you are concerned about originality you will want to find out how it looked when the Ponds built it; if you want to personalize it then polishing and new Stainless are a must have. The important thing is that your son will be proud of it and enjoy driving it.

Hey guys, just curious to see what the consensus is here. 1. Do you guys polish your carbs, heads or other aluminum pieces, or do you keep them natural, or maybe even paint them? 2. Do you re-use and paint the original bolts and nuts, or do you replace them all with new? If new, do you go with stainless steel replacements, or do you go with zinc plated. Again, if new, do you paint them or wax them and keep them looking shinny and new? 3. When it comes to the grease zerks, do you paint them, polish them, or replace with new? 4. Wheel lug bolts. Natural or painted? 5. Gas tank cap. Natural or painted?

Interesting ..... look at what I found in the ignition switch! The Lawn Chief is sold by Tru-Value Hardware. This one was made by Murray. Murray probably was making Craftsman mowers at some time also. I thought about hitching it up to the RJ.

True..He parked it when the rod broke. This is why I buy non running tractors as that ...........non runners that may need an engine or tranny or both.

Ray, thanks for the comments. As for steering wheel removal, I have never pulled a GT14 Steering wheel that did not have a Pin that needs removed. Although I think my total experience is only 5 different tractors so not extensive experience. Do note that the diameter of the hole and thus the pin are larger than I would have used. The spring pins are there fore large enough for light to pass through. In fact, I used a smaller Allen Hex key my first time and the hollow end gave enough tension I thought I was backing out the bolt but it was simply turning the sprinted pin in place. Use a drift almost snug in diameter and you will find that there is a pin holding it in place.

I think you will want to pull the engine down prior to ordering parts. Chances are that kit will do the trick, but you will want to measure the crank and cylinder first. I have used kits from "bakt4kids and they are great.

This what I would need? Could the broken rod have damaged anything else? The cylinder wall looks nice and clean. it is not seized. Tapped the piston with my finger and it dropped 1/2 an inch.

First off - if you have a nice flat property with little to no hills/slopes then the negativity of the series 1 drop dramatically, then if the oil is changed regularily and the level is closely watched, and the fins kept clean (theses last 2 are only what any air cooled engine needs) the problems will fall down to what any other engines are....

The fuel pumps for the big blocks (10-16hp) are all the same. Doesn't matter if it's a Magnum or K series.

I think it's a GT14 air filter. That's what is on my C101. The motor is off a Gravely .... probably why it didn't have the tapped holes. And the air cleaner is off a GT14. I wasn't sure if it was going to fit but it was perfect! ¼" clearance top and front. It will still be OK after the dent in the hood gets straightened.

Friday i found a real nice 520H 443 hours tractor is almost like new deck has some marks on it, the guy wants 1800 dollars i think its kind of high what do you WH guys think. Dave in Wi.

You have a 1975 B-80, very capable for mowing and other medium duty work.

Bttatro Well it is looking like this is a short block or it cam out of another tractor. you do have the correct throttle linkage. But the choke linkage is missing or the clip is gone to hold the cable. Unfortunately the speed control bracket that bolts to the head is very hard to find. Maybe use a washer and small bolt to hold down the cable. The cables are easy to find. I would just buy a new carb for it off E-Bay for around $20.00. May be get a some new points and condenser cheap also. The hood latch is easy to find also. If not let me know. Good Luck and Enjoy the Project.

Yes gonna mow a half acre with it.She fired right up.Not sure what it is really capable of.Yes I am hoping to use her till she gives up But I don't think she ever will.The old round top still sits in my dads grave yard of old tractors.

When you get serious about front wheel bearings this is the way to go. I made this revision back in 1989, I had to tighten the nut on the left side last year. I have 5 lug wheels with 3500# trailer hubs with 6 ply tires.

Three generations involved it "Horse Play", can't ask for a better day.

Careful with those small shrimp, they tend to get stuck between the carb needle and seat. Adding a fuel filter is always a good idea if it doesn't have one already and check fuel tank screen for being partially plugged with dirt and crud. Fuel pump failing has already been mentioned. Installing all new fuel line rubber hose is a good thing to do as well.
