8 pointsToday I took my father and kids and picked up a 606 with snow blade. Rolls good, steering seems good and the engine turned by hand. The hood is a little rough with a piece cut out of the left side and it is missing the hood latch. Spent some time emptying the small amount of old gas that was in it (I do not think the gas tank is original) and putting some fresh gas in. Then cleaned up the spark plug. I noticed that it does not have a choke cable (but I think it should). Pulled the pull start and got it to run for about 4 or 5 seconds. The motor blew out a lot of blue smoke. I know it will need some carb work, and since it is burning oil maybe some new piston rings. What do you all think? The pictures have my father and my son in then.

5 pointsMy dads 1962 wheel horse 502. its got an 8hp kohlor magnum on it (with a k91 carb i got for free from local shop and a k161 airfilter assembly). this deck is off my dads 754. i freed up the deck(the bars that run from front of deck to thebar between gear boxes was rusted to shaft.) and lubed it up real good. i told dad the belts were shot but i said what the heck lets mow with it till they break. well they lasted past the video infact dad mowed good 20 minutes and almost had yard completely done when one broke lol. also the triple pulley needs attantion its wondering all over the shaft. yea dad didnt have rpms up very high. our grass is mostly weeds and not thick at all. reason i go to front of tractor and remove a strap is because the roll pin for pedal latch is broke.another pin will be put in after paint. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbmjrODh8rY

4 pointsGot another Simplicity . I know , I know , but to good of a deal to pass up . Needs both side panels (battery leaked) , otherwise seems complete . Has been repainted at some point in its life and the engine is free so hopefully it will run . Can't make out the serial # behind seat and need to get the numbers off engine . Better admit it now that I also picked up a Massey 12 (son really wanted it). No pics of that one yet , would like to straighten out the grill before posting pics . It runs and drives , also pretty original .

4 points8-20-1975 Viking 1 launched to Mars Viking 1, an unmanned U.S. planetary probe, is launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on a mission to Mars. On June 19, 1976, the spacecraft entered into orbit around Mars and devoted the next month to imaging the Martian surface with the purpose of finding an appropriate landing site for its lander. On July 20–the seventh anniversary of theApollo 11 lunar landing–the Viking 1 lander separated from the orbiter and touched down on the Chryse Planitia region, becoming the first spacecraft to successfully land on the surface of Mars. The same day, the craft sent back the first close-up photographs of the rust-colored Martian surface. In September 1976, Viking 2–launched only three weeks after Viking 1–entered into orbit around Mars, where it assisted Viking 1 in imaging the surface and also sent down a lander. During the dual Viking missions, the two orbiters imaged the entire surface of Mars at a resolution of 150 to 300 meters, and the two landers sent back more than 1,400 images of the planet’s surface

4 pointsLol thanks but before you give me TOO much credit I have to admit I'm Ford through and through. I was in the market for another truck to run around in and stumbled across a heck of a deal on the old Chevy, it's a 1980 C30 with the 292 inline 6 and 4 speed, but my heavy worker and my baby is still my 66 F350 lol. Oh and the koozie works great

4 pointsNow Howard, is there really... any another brand? Those decals are like the cherry on top Bryce.

3 pointsI'm quite frugal (parsimonious perhaps?) but I'm listening hard to this thread. I've seen countless times where things are over-priced for sure but there are times when a penny saved is a pound lost as well! Please continue.

3 pointswith bearings, you get what you pay for. Buy them from NAPA or Motion Industries and they will run you $12-16 each, sealed both sides. The bearing cups are machined from steel billet (solid steel bar stock). If you buy the ones for $3-5 each, the cups are drawn from sheet stock. Not gonna last as long. If your bearings are toast, the spindles are toast as well. When the balls stop rolling, the inner race will roll on the spindle and wear it down. New bearings will sit in the same position and you have not solved anything. Also, if you are getting sealed both side bearings, do yourself a favor and get rid of the grease fitting on the rim. You do not need it and your tractor will stay much cleaner without all that extra grease oozing out everywhere

3 pointsIf you want to plow 5" deep put the left front and rear wheels up on 5" blocks. Now adjust the plow to sit flat on the floor like it is now. There should be an adjustable link joining the rear vertical bar to the bracket on the plow frame. What it adjusts is called the suck. It pulls the plow into the ground until the angle iron at the rear called the land slide won't let it go any deeper. This process will get your adjustment real close to what you want. If you want to go deeper tip the point down. To raise it a bit raise the tip a bit. Garry

3 pointsThey were from the late 1980's and called a "stadium blanket." you certainly don't see many of them. There was a short period where wheel horse had all kinds of promotional stuff available in a merchandising catalog. They had the blanket, seat cushions for taking to the bleachers, pocket knives, a cooler, pens, tire gauges, weather vanes, neckties, sweaters...all kinds of stuff. None of which you see very often. Take care of it. It's a nice piece . steve

3 pointsdont jump to conclusion it need rings yet. get her running good and let her run for a while. many peopleput oil in cylinder to prevent stuck rings for long storage. and if it sat a while it will need to be ran a bit anyway. i had a couple engines smoke at first because thy sat a long time once you ran them a couple hours they stop smoking. been fine ever since
-
3 pointsttatro Can you post some better pick`s of the engine area? It should have a choke cable. Does it look like these picks? this is the same but electric start. It has the original seat and steering wheel that's good. Enjoy the project. Carbs are cheap on E-bay don`t rebuild unless you want to. The blue smoke may be cause it been awhile since it last ran and flooded it. Feel free to ask any questions.

3 pointsFigured it had been too long without an update of some type. I am working on several implements but this update is for the two additional decks I plan to use on Elijah and Lazarus. I currently am using a new old stock 42 inch read discharge which does a good job, but bigger may be better. In search of the perfect deck for my modernized GT14's I am in the process of rebuilding a 48 inch deck with the more modern spindles etc and I snagged a 60 inch Ariens C195 deck from Stevebo which has all new bearings etc. both are basically in the assembly process. You can see from the dust that the C195 deck has been waiting 4-6 weeks for temps to lower to point my motivation returned. I made some headway today.

3 points, as beginner in this hobby and forum , I know the feeling. . I try to help where I can , sometimes right , sometimes wrong , but that's how I learn . With all the different models and the Ponds frugalness , it's like being in school again , except without all the !

3 pointsTypically what happens to an old deck and especially one that has sat around is this. The slide bar rides on top of two little strips of Delrin, causing a little space between the deck top and slide bar in the area between the Delrin strips. Dirt enters the area and water makes the thing rust. The bar pits and if the deck sets around, the slide bar freezes in place and then the mower belts will break.. What I did was buff the deck free from rust with a wheel and use rust converter. I also used my secret weapon abrasive wheel on the slide bar and deck http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?q=polycarbide+abrasive+wheel and these wheels will impart a near mirror finish to steel in short order. I have told people to try them for paint removal and they thank me every time for mentioning the wheels. Instead of riding on Delrin, I just find a piece of Formica and cut it a couple of inches wide and cut two slots in it to caapture it in between two bolts so it is under the slide bar. I slather grease beneath the Formica so there is no place for more rust to form. Then i use just a little plumbers grease [completely waterproof] between the slide bar and the formica. It then slides very easily and there is not a space for dirt to get in. The next step is a judgement call, but I run the mower without the deck belt guard and i blow off the dirt and dust on a regular basis.

3 pointsThat ol` 292 was a good engine. Chevy`s first V8`s were 265, and 283 and hard to beat also...

3 pointsYou're doing good Russell. Wheel Horse did so many crazy things in the earlier years that it's impossible to keep everything straight or know for sure what was factory original on most things. That's part of all the fun we have here.

2 pointsExactly. I didn't know they said that about the 300's. All the 60's round hoods were 4 pinion and folks have plowed with them for many years.
-
2 pointsI talked with @perry before this purchase just to get a idea of its worth . He told me the wheel weights alone are worth what I paid . If the mower deck checks out to be a 48" for a pre 70's tractor he said its worth $$$ . So the tractor is just a bonus . I too like the looks of the Wheel Horse tractors better than the simplicity (especially the 70's/80's tractors) . But with that being said , around the surrounding area its predominantly simplicity . Sure wish I knew how many the hardware sold .

2 pointsIn the northeast, that is a really nice price for a decent lower hour 520H and 2 stage. As long as it is in good condition, I would go for it. A nice 2 stage is worth $300-600 by itself. I agree with elliot, make sure the engine is running as it should. Onan's are expensive to repair. Two stage blower are not to hard to repair. Many will need auger shaft bearing and new idlers. 48" decks are not too hard to come by. 60" are more rare and expensive, often only available with a tractor. My biggest question is what happened to the original deck. I'd check to see if the seller still has it. They can be repaired unless they are badly rusted out. Let us know how you make out.

2 pointsTo answer the original thread question, IMO @CasualObserver hit the nail directly on the head and provided all the correct information to it.

2 pointsLook for oil leaks on the motor, make sure it runs good with out the choke out, make sure one cylinder is not dead.[ they will run on one cylinder] look for rear leaks on the axle seals. and almost any 42 or 48 in deck for a c-series will work oh and so will a 60in deck. Good luck.
