Found this on roadside by a garage at a abandon house. Found the owner and brought it home today. He rebuilt the engine a year ago and lost interest. This will be my winter project.

After mowing with the 312H tonight I left the motor running and started to hose off the grass when I heard this high pitched bearing squealing noise. I turned off the hose and walked around the tractor but could not pinpoint the source of the noise. So I turned off the engine and the squealing noise continued. Found it.....a swarm of cicadas in the locust tree I parked under.

I am partial to the '76 or '77 B/C Series (B-100, C-120, C-160) as well, but I prefer the 8-speed over the hydro. Just my personal preference.

I concider myself a collector where my wife thinks I'm a horder, she cant understand things like keeping blown engines for parts, but I cant understand 10 purses either

I thought this would be a fun thread. What is the difference between "collecting" and "hoarding"? Is there a fine line between the two? I am looking for your opinions. In speaking about the wheel horse line of products, I believe when someone buys everything they can with no intentions of using the item nor any plans of selling it and just to have it to say they have it is considered hoarding. On the other hand when someone buys a item to to use it, show it or resell it then I would consider that a collector.

IMHO... The C-160 of mid 70s with the Kohler K341s is the best ever made...C-160 Auto over the C-160 8speed ...hands down. The 300 and 400 series ...and even the 520H... are not as good and they have too much to go wrong that the average joe would have trouble diagnosing. i.e., electronics, safety switches etc. Also partial to the Bronco 14.

I don't know yet what category I fall into, but I know one thing for sure, and that is I won't show this topic to my wife! I'm pretty sure I know what her answer will be. I have a large "collection" but I don't feel like that makes me a hoarder. I pretty much stopped buying tractors a few years ago when the round fenders were all collected. My personal feelings about these two subjects is this: Hoarders have a condition that can't be controlled. A hoarder will buy just for the sake of spending money, however most hoarders want everything for little to no money. They also don't have intentions or goals of restoring or repairing a tractor, has no real interest in going to a show, and nine times out of ten, don't even know what he has. They just like to accumulate whatever they can, because they enjoy seeing clutter. If they want something in particular, they don't care about how much money they spend on a piece, aren't concerned about originality or condition, and will more than likely die before the piece is ever sold or given away. Hoarders don't usually have their items covered, and their junk usually just sits where ever they decided to unload it. Collectors can stop buying when they know there are other things that are more important. Collectors also have a goal in mind whenever it comes to purchasing a certain piece. They intend to restore, repair, or just get their latest investment running. Some collectors will take their prized pieces to a show, as this gives the collector a sense of pride. Yes, some collector garages are cluttered, however most collectors can't stand to see it for very long. A collector not only knows what the tractor is that he recently bought, but could probably tell you the serial number, the year, and be able to name every attachment that was made for the tractor. Collectors do their homework or research on a certain piece, and know what the value of the tractor is worth. A collector will sell if the price is right, and in most cases, a collector will be willing to help out another fellow collector if needed or can. Collector will also take care of their stuff, usually tucking it away in a garage, shed, or home built lean-to. So with this all said, how do each of you look at yourselves now? Does this make the decision of which group type you are any easier?

I noticed collectors take car of what they have hoarders just let it all sit outside and rot and never sell unless it's for a hefty price. My dad bought his 551 from a guy like this and it was sad to see all the WH's rotting out side. I kept his number for awhile and called time to time trying to buy a lawn ranger he had and needless to say the lawn ranger is still there. Too each their own I suppose

This was my Fathers day present to myself. It has unknown hours on it but runs well and all idlers are nice and tight so I think hours may be low. Only thing to make me think otherwise is the steering wheel is polished smooth. I have not mounted the 48" deck yet because I had to order a belt for the bagger. Not shown in the pics is the plastic tube from the bagger blower to the bagger itself. Deck has some weld repair but seems real solid and all moving parts spin properly. Cleat

Finally received my Simplicity yesterday, and I have to say it's a nice clean example. The engine is not original and there's definitely something broke. Took it to the local dealer to run the serial # . Without the original engine it's hard to determine the year . He went back and forth between some manuals , and he's pretty sure it's a 63 . He may have a engine , but at his pace that might be year . So the hunt is on . This picture was taken before it was loaded up , with the 1919 gas pump behind it . More pics tomorrow , as it's still in my cousins work van .

i tell myself I'm collecting, but I feel like I'm hording. Now that I brought everything home from storage last week I've realized I need to concentrate on certain models and let some go.

I have a 36" one on my 520 and the Onan doesn't even know its ther but Steve does have a point about ground engageing stuff and mauals that one can't argue. No you would not be able to use on on all three unless you get real creative with some custom mounts. They weigh quite abit so make sure your rock shaft & cable are in good shape and always use a lift assist spring. The same tiller should work on any 3/4/500 series tractor.

I like the C-160 Auto for (1)...hand operated motion lever eliminates frequent gear changes (stops) for motion / speed control in grass or gravel. (2) much easier to mow around all the junk..trees...biushes... in my yard, without clutch / gear changes back and forth...just move motion control lever. (3) ability to increase momentum on-the-fly when slamming into a big pile of snow or snow drift. I concede that the 8 speed is better for use with a tiller, but that's all. Just MHO. ps...like the duallys on the C-160

The C-160 is the King of the all around working tractor . But if you can find a C195, they are simple to work on, and have a great wt. distribution for pushing and pulling things, plus you can have a real 3-point and a rear PTO. Now the problem is finding one and then the cost. So maybe just the C-160?

Interesting post, great info. I had no idea the C 160 was so popular, I don't believe I've ever even seen one, but of course, there aren't many Wh's in the southeast .I always thought the D's were the "Hoss" of the horses. My first WH was a D 180, and man what a tractor it was!

Here ya go Bob. I wasn't referring to Matts foot control. This is the control I put on my 312 and 520 and it will work on any hydro with the console located stick like the C-160 and the early 520s.

So...maybe a bad bearing in a 312H sounds like a bunch of cicadas??? Ed, we need a video with a sound track so we can help other members.

For really great motion control, Put a foot control on those hydros Daveo. Frees up a hand to operate the lift for jumping the deck over stump roots and for raising the snow plow and blower. I have foot control on my 312 and 520 hydros.

Jim's right...these horses were made to do this kind of work and any one of the ones you have would be OK for sure. I was just sayin' if the C-120 was a manual transmission...that is the one you want to use. Another reason to equip the C-120...you might find a tiller for that easier...might be less money then for the 520...and if you decide to sell it, I think you will have a larger market. Is that a great picture of Jim trying to keep his lines straight of what??

Dad has had to come to the wound care specialist due to a diabetic ulcer on his foot, but everything appears to be doing well. The redness is gone from his knee thanks to the pic line and antibiotics. I appreciate all of your concerns. Hopefully I'll return to my horsies before too long!!

I don't have a WH yet. Looking at a 551 tonight. Last time I downloaded one of those speed apps was when I got an all Billet 46cc motor for my 1/5 scale RC truck. Zip tied my iphone to the truck and was doing 60+ MPH passes while lifting the front wheels. Needless to say after a few passes it flipped and that iPhone was destroyed!!! haha

Dan, There are two "clasps" bolted to the underside of the outside of each foot board. The clasps fit around the two rods that extend from the frame. See pics. Good luck! Al C.

Stens has them for $28. The quick fix ideas may work in a pinch, but I don't agree with them. I agree with Don 1977 and Wheel-N-it, an injury or accident is not worth the $28 you saved.

Hello all, New to site, tractors, and home owning all together. Wife and I just bought first house, on an acre and I picked up a C-125 to start maintenance on the property. It had been sitting a while so after warming it up, I changed the oil, cleaned filter (till I get new one), and new plug. De-greased and power washed body and wheels only. Familiarizing myself with removing deck and front PTO. Came with snow plow as well. My intentions are to slowly restore cosmetics, but only after making sure engine and other functioning parts are maintained. Suggestions for things to clean, check, replace, all that good stuff are welcome as I don't want to screw something up that's not broken, nor do I want to neglect something major before I start to actually use this beast. Thanks all, Looking forward to future convo's Rob PS. My apologies if this is posted incorrectly or to wrong area..

One of the main differences between the C-160 and SK-486 is the transmission. The SK-486 has a 1" rear axle with 4 pinions. The C-160's have a 1 1/8" axle with 8 pinions. That said, I've noticed no difference in the performance between the smaller and larger axle models. I have a SK-486, it's a great machine. Congratulations on your find!
