7 pointsJust my . Has anyone thought of making a calendar that uses members and their horses to recreate the covers of old Wheel Horse sales brochures?

6 pointsHere in the middle of show season, and seeing so many people comment about something being a "calendar shot" or "calendar worthy" I thought I'd post up a place for people to submit recommendations for calendar pictures for 2017. We also benefit from not scrambling for pictures when it comes time to make the calendar! If you're going to post here, please use the highest resolution or picture size possible. If you can't upload a high res picture due to size restrictions, feel free to PM me for my email address and you can send it directly to me to put in here. Feel free to post links to threads containing pictures you'd like to recommend, or simply copy and past them into your post. They should (hopefully) just copy over in the HTML of the post. edit:.... please submit only one photo in each post, with names/model numbers. Please keep commentary to a minimum in this thread and show your appreciation for pictures posted by simply clicking the LIKE button. Located conveniently right here. || || || || \ / \/ Thanks!

4 pointsSlowly making some progress on the tractor. I put the new fuel pump on Sunday, today I turned it over. After a couple cyles it popped and fired. It runs great. Revs and idles down real smooth. I need a battery, I started it today using my 160amp fleet charger on quick start. I took it for a test drive and what a difference between this and any other gt I've operated. This feels like a smaller version of a big tractor. At work we have a jd 460 and the clutch, brake, trans feel very similar. I started using a rubbing compound on the hood and fenders I have a few other tricks to make the decals pop too. At work I found a set of wheels and Firestone terra grips with hub caps too. I cleaned up the chrome and the tubed tires hold air. I like the look and tread on the old tires much better than what's on the wheels now. Next up scraping, painting the deck sharpen the blades and grease the bearings

4 pointsThat's the gear in question Steve. I'm thinking it will swap out if needed as well as the original axles fitting into the new differential. Why do we get excited about this stuff?

3 pointsJust picked up an old 60's model I believe! Still unsure of the model but that's for another day! Anyway the shifter broke off right at the case. What's the safest way of getting the broken half out? I believe it's a 3 speed

3 pointsCooking spray, Mineral oil, oil, wax, wd40, food sealer, whatever seals the surface from O2 and H2O.

3 pointsBack in the day....when we stored old chrome reverse wheels or Cragar mags,,,,we would clean them and put on a coat of wax.....and leave the wax on while stored.....Buff it off then we were ready to use the wheels....

Residents promised that they'd wear clothes or stay out of sight when the postal person came to deliver. How many of you secretly wish that you were the Postman for Paradise Lake?

3 pointsI got this carrier with a 520H. Can anybody tell me anything about it? Did not find any identification on it. It does not look homemade.
-
3 pointsAn 8 pinion differential would be more readily available. If out thoughts are correct you might be able to fit one in your transmission. Sometimes these things work out great and offer a alternative solution as these old parts get harder and harder to fine. Much like when I fitted splined axles and gears to a 5003/5010 transmission differential. That is why Steve mentioned that this could be a great opportunity.

3 pointsAs suggested by @tunahead72 Please only use one picture per post in this section. Also, please remember to include your tractor (or tractors) year and model number, as well as any names of riders you potentially want identified. In previous years I think we've only had tractors (no riders) on the calendar.. but there are often some good people shots.... In a previous year we did two versions (show queens and workclothes )maybe we can do one calendar of just tractors and another of tractors being operated? I like the literature idea too.... maybe a collage version that shows tractors and associated literature or something.... who knows? The finished product is always a bit of a surprise! And just to include my own picture.... 1968 Commando 6 with front tractor mounted Bachtold brush mower.

3 pointsI think I would try to clean out around where the shifter broke, oil the heck out of it and around the jam nut...and let is soak for a few days before I tried to do anything. Don't force that nut...you don't want to break that set screw...it is hardened steel. My guess is that you will be opening the transmission. Not a big deal, it is a 2 piece tranny and anything you need is available. Welcome to Red square.

3 pointsI just compared parts list for the 5045 (953), 5047 (1054) and 5025. It appears to me that the gear ratio was changed with the input pulley. So a transmission swap may be an option. I think the axles may be an issue though. I believe the 953 has longer axles. This is only speculation because I don't have a 5045 or 5047 to play with and just looking at the drawings can be misleading but it appears that the splined end of the axles are the same as other 1.125" axles. This is telling me that maybe an axle swap with another transmission with 1.125" axles. I also can't help but feel that a differential swap could be possible with some creative thinking. Again, this is only speculation and just throwing thoughts out there. With the interchangeability of Wheel Horse parts over the years it just screams to think outside of the box. Something else. I think I remember somebody saying the bolt pattern at the frame was different on a 953. Probably not a big issue but.......
-
3 pointsI'm confused. Is this trans together or not? Can you post some pictures from different angles of that differential?? Just for the heck of it, measure the distance (center to center & diagonally) the bolt pattern for the mounting bolts on that trans. While a different differential will not fit in there, you may be able to replace the trans with another transmission. I happen to have one (#5053) I have just rebuilt. It may be an option. Thanks for the kind words above...this really is a great site.

3 pointsConsidering how bad the Majic oil-based paint is, I can't imagine their water-based being any better.

3 pointsThe shifter is retained by a "Dog Point" screw (right side). Back off on the lock nut, loosen the dog point and the rest of the shifter will come out. No fear of it falling inside.

3 pointsI have R4 industrial tires on my NH TC35 and I cannot work snow without chains. I also have turfs with year round chains on my C-81 and LOVE them! I'd like to try some ags someday for dirt but for year round use I love my turfs/chains combo. Turfs will get more chain to the surface than either R4s or ags and it's the chains that get the job done.

2 pointsI really wonder if it may depend on the condition of the chrome parts to be stored, as far as what level of protection would be needed. I recently picked up some of the parts I had plated at the chrome shop. They were polishing the chrome parts with McGuire's Magnesium and Aluminum polish. I asked them about a manifold that they plated with a decorative polished copper, it had sat for a while after it was finished, so they instructed me to polish it and then apply a protective coating on it to keep it from future tarnishing. I just used a high heat clear spray.

2 pointsThe top coat (clearcoat) is not solvent based. The clearcoat is (1) clear and (2) activator. It does not dry by solvent release. It hardens by the activator. That is why it can be used over urethane and over waterborne basecoats and still achieve the VOC requirements.

2 pointsOur prayers for your Dad's healing, he is priority #1 now, the trans will still be there.
-
2 pointsDon't want to dampen the spirit of this post, but I would recommend opening the case before wasting any time on the shifter. My limited experience tells me its full of water or has been. Most likely a rusted mess.

2 pointsRed, look on line to find a company that does steering wheel restoration. I bought a Case 300 that had the steering wheel restored. I don't know the name of the company but here is a pic to show you what can be done. It's just a random shot I took and the wheel is dirty and has been used to steer a working tractor for the past 15 years so you will have to excuse the dirt and grime.
-
2 pointsThinking along the same lines Bob. Maybe a different differential would work by changing out the 11/44 toothed gear also. @dells68 let us know when you get the trans apart...I have a 5025 apart now and we can take some measurements. Whether or not, I would like to see what is possible here. It's a great opportunity for the site.

2 pointsFor plowing dirt, either ag tires or chains would work. Most plow with the ags, but I seen and used chains before when plowing dirt. Either way, you will be fine. Ags just give it that authentic, farm like image.....

2 pointsRed144runner Howdy neighbor. Looking good. It is always good when people come over from the dark green side and into the light. So what are the tricks you for decals??? Enjoy your new tractor.

2 pointsYou gotta do it! One of the great things that I hear continually at these plow days in the last year that I've owned my 314 is, "I didn't know you could plow with a WH!" That is why I aim to make one "NASTY" mochine out of GhostRider. If something doesn't hold up, I'll build it tougher (although I'm currently impressed with its factory build quality) if it doesn't have enough power, I'll put in a bigger motor (every time I've put the plow in the ground--power was the least of my problems) and if someone is incredulous about it being a wheel horse they better keep an eye out behind them, the GhostRider is coming! I think it is time to see more WH tractors at plow days. Hydro or GD, these things were built to work. Dan, thanks for the great pics. I'm relishing every minute with my son Zach on my leg while driving. He is my youngest and in a few short years he'll be driving Blackbeard instead of riding with me. Then I'll long for the opportunity to have him be little and ride on my leg once more. You captured that moment in time for me. Thanks (I got some dust in my eye!). It it is a great venue and a fun time!

2 pointsI would say try using a strong magnet then loosen the dog holding screw. As the screw backs out the magnet might keep it from falling on down in the transmission. Just a Idea. Maybe someone else will chime in here that has experience with this.
-
2 pointsHere is a pic of the hitch before assembly. Can't find one of it mounted on the tractor....I'll snap a pic next chance I get..
-
2 pointsThe 953/1054 differentials are not interchangeable with any of the models that use 12" tires due to the gear ratio being different because of larger tires.

2 pointsMy father bought a new Norlett Commander in 1974,it had a Briggs and Stratton engine with an electric clutch and 36 inch deck. The engine seized and I eventually gave it to a friend of mine, meanwhile I bought a new Wheelhorse which was identical except for the clutch.I sold it to my brother and it was stolen from his garage,I replaced it with a Wheelhorse 312-8 Kohler in 1987 and still have it today with over 2400 hours-still on the original exhaust. My friend with the Norlett fitted a Kohler engine and associated bracketry which he sourced in the U.S and refurbed it to a very high standard, even galvanising the deck.It is used weekly to cut his lawn He still has the original sales brochure I gave him with the Norlett,I am sure I could scan it to anyone who is interested.
