bad bearings?

Hello Everyone!! A few weeks ago I sold my 2014 X300 and decided on finding a Wheel Horse, after driving many hours/miles and looking at several 312-8s that were in bad shape I purchased a 1990 model 312 Hydro classic 42". It has 600 hours and according to the previous owner serviced yearly. The guy I bought it from bought it new and still had the manual, brochures, tractor hang tags, deck manual, Kohler engine manual, a new unused deck chute he took off when new and 3 sets of blades. He had the transmission serviced last year I'm assuming by a Deere dealer or picked up a Deere filter which I crossed with the Toro number that matched and replaced the front tires and both belts, this spring he installed a new battery, did his yearly oil change and air filter. I paid $900 for it which I hope was not a bad deal. So far I've done very little other than replace a headlight, replaced all the fuel line and fuel filter, also pulled the carb bowl which was spotless. I've got two new deck wheels on the way and the battery hold down hooks. It has a few surface rust spots where the paint popped off on the fenders as well as the front hood decal and very light surface rust that was under the deck covers. I've cut with it some and it mows well. How durable are these hydro transmissions? I've got to get accustomed to using the stick vs the foot to control speed but the transmission feels smooth. I'd like to go with a more aggressive rear tires of the same size like the Deestone Super Lugs seeing these are dry cracked bad but seem to still hold air "I'm open to tire suggestions", I do like the tractor tire look and would come in handy in a few wet areas of my property. Thought about doing a light restoration and replacing all the decals in the near future but this week I'm going to focus my attention to the deck "remove the surface rust, prime and repaint" Got to try out this Attach A Matic feature, looks simple...Overall I like it, I must say Toro built them well! Any tips on these units?

In one of the brochures I've picked up there was a great illustration of the tractor sizes offered by Wheel Horse in 1965. Possibly shared already here, but here it is again.

When bearings start to fail they get tight which causes heat and depletes the lubrication if there is any left at that point. Then they get loose from wear. It can be detected at any time in the failure process. The earlier the better keeps repair costs down. Garry

Dittos on Matt's foot pedal kit. I have a JD X300 and love the foot pedals, so when I got my 416-H, I hated the way the column lever worked. I removed it and installed the kit. I will never go back to a hand operated system again.

Get matt's kit and you will be back to foot control. Really makes the tractor a pleasure to drive. The Eaton 1100 transmission is very durable. Cleat

Very nice looking machine. Magnum 12's are very good engines. Looks like it was well taken care of. Considering it will outlast any of the box store machines you could have bought for twice/three times as much, I'd say you did alright. The hand control does take a little bit to get used to but it's not bad. I'm in the same boat as I started using my 418 to mow with. I'm sure there is someone else who can help you out a little more that will come along. Pull up a chair and make yourself at home........

I work in IT and its lost on me as well. The internet is the biggest waste of time and youth there is. None of them have an attention span past 30 seconds. Thanks Al Gore. Lol.. jk. Its DARPA.

I was driving the grandkids around in a wagon behind the 416-H yesterday. We captured at least 5 Pokémon just in my back woods alone. I don't get the attraction of it, but the kids love it.

I live in a small rural town and scored this one from the local John Deere dealer a few years ago. It was in excellent condition with only 175 hours. The previous owner traded it on a JD zero turn (his loss). I drove it home about a mile and when I got there started to check over everything only to discover that I had nearly run out of gas.

I have always dreamt of the day that I will find a Wheel Horse close enough to home that an overnight stay isn't required to go get it!

So after 20 years of owning this ranger I finally decided it was time for restoring her. This tractor has been a worker and mowed with full time, easy to maneuver around tight spots and fun to ride. Previous owner had painted parts so there was no original nostalgia left as far as true original. I'll keep updating progress and this will be at Big Show next year. I'm leaving all the battle scars on it and not using any body filler. This will still be a worker and not a trailer queen.

I dont know about you guys. Im 39 and the internet is baned in my house. They get an internet treat every now and then but unless its school or im alowing it, its not happening. The reason kids are the way they are is the internet. Dont get me wrong I make my living from it. I grew up on bbs and dial up. Ive see it transform to what it is today and its a time suck. I thought 10 yrs ago kids would be smarter and i would have to retool, but i dont have to and thats sad. They have no clue for various reasons. Im hanging my hat on the thoughtless internet.

A couple of years ago I towed this B-100 home from next door with my golf cart.

Hello! I have an older wheel horse riding mower. I had a flat tire. I took tour off to fix it. Put it back on and note the tire is rubbing frame. Seems like the other wheel is farther out as well. Please help!

Hello: Well I did it again saw another parts D-250 and it followed me home, this one has steel fenders no fiber glass.

I have a 314 h and 522xi loader at the vacation home. They make our property maintenance much easier. What used to be an issue is no more. Stale gas in the carb and dead batteries. After having to clean out a few carbs I chose to take the easy road. These tractors don't see more than 20 hours a year. The gas would often go bad in the carb and leave me with more to do. The easy way around this is to shut off the fuel and let the carb run dry. Starting it up the next time could be an issue. I started by replacing all of the fuel line. Used a simple 1/4 turn inline valve, an inline marine fuel pump, and a fuel filter. Now i I turn the fuel off and let em run dry. When it's time to start a fuel pumps of the hand pump and they fire right up. No more waiting for the mechanical fuel pumps to pull fuel. Also stated using solar chargers on the batteries. Haven't had a dead battery in 5 years.

my guess is that the hub slid inward on the axle a bit.

Is the rim on the same direction as it came off? Is the same amount of axle showing beyond the hub?

Good looking . Love my 312h! But , I've had mine since new and it does everything I ask of it.

cleaned up , with out the hub caps and with the hub caps. This is the nicest 520H I have seen with only 304 hours. hope you enjoy the pics. going to get a cover for it today. It runs even better then it looks . I am afraid to use it.

Haha thanks guys! I worked a double yesterday and haven't had anytime with my kids in awhile so when I got home I got Rosie out and we went for a cruise.. Had a great time and being that I love taking pics of my kids and my tractors...lol great family time. Just one of the biggest reasons why I love these tractors

Purchased from my neighbor John, the K powered 416-8 was only a mile from my house. Unfortunately John had not been in good enough health to drive it so it had sat for several years plus someone borrowed the starter and never returned it so I loaded it and the snow blade and mower deck on a trailer to bring it all home. If I remember correctly I had to take the starter off a K301 that was tucked away here at home to get the big K341 running again.

Fredski53, 6 or 8 speed in my mind is a matter of when the trans was produced.The end results are the same.6 forward and 2 reverse.Try the heli-coil fix first.The load on the set screw is not that large so that even if the tap doesn't have enough metal to be a hundred percent, it may be enough to last a long time.You can always try some other fix if a helicoil doesn't work for you. I spent many years in the aerospace industry and heli-coils are the norm.Go for it.Just make sure you install the heli-coil as directed JMHO,JAinVA

Hi all... Reassembly is beginning. I still have some painting to do, but today I mounted the front tires and connected the rear to the the frame. it was so hot here in NJ today. Oppressive, I tell you... Just couldn't get much work done. Needed Air Conditioning immediately.. Tomorrow I'm going to pickup a 42" snow plow. It's my understanding that it is a long frame plow but may not fit a GT14 without any modifications. So I may be doing a thread on that in the future of things don't as easily as I would like.

Hi All.... Quick little update here... Since the tires are mounted now I figured it was time to paint them. I found that painting the rims before mounting them resulted in them getting scratched up with the tire spoons. So I make use of this tip I learned from the 3 wheeler world. I removed the valve stem to let most of the air out. This allows one to sneak playing cards between the tire and the rim. Then... Just carefully paint. I used ivory gloss for the rims as suggested in paint list thread. Here are some photos. Oh... I did wrap the valve stem with electrical tape.
