So I've bought many wheel horses, either they were complete to begin with, or they always stayed a bare tractor, etc. Today I made my first few passes with this 656 I recently got. Newer motor, and the deck that came with my Raider 9. Only thing I had to do was change the deck drive pulley from the larger raider 9 pulley, to the small near 1:1 pulley from the deck I have for my other 656. It's seen the torch unfortunately... but it had the exact pulley I needed. With a trip to the hardware store for a belt, I give you! Tire chains will come off for mowing of course.

It's quicker and a lot simpler doing it with a paint pen, and I'm not that steady of hand.

No, I don't recommend it. Sorry... can't find anyone dumb enough to film this on a red tractor! Break ground with shovel cutting some roots if possible, Gently soak before, not saturate (you don't want to create sticky/suction-y mud), Use your truck and a chain, hook low and pull slow (Low gear 4WD if possible.) Garden tractors are not really up to the task of pulling them out of the ground. Across the ground once they're out, yes, by all means. Drag them all over, all you want!

I think this will be less work than loading all this firewood in a wagon and hauling it to the stack. I hope to be able to pick up the wood, turn around and put it in the round stack. When it gets to far away from the stack, I plan on using the Wheelhorse and push it closer. If anyone is interested, I may post a video of building the round firewood stack.

Well, it has been four months since the last update to this thread. I decided not to purchase a "test" engine. Instead, I've been reading the manuals and watching many videos. Yesterday I opened up the SK-486 cylinder head, cleaned things out, replaced the head gasket and spark plug. It was pretty dirty inside, but there were no major gaps or fit variances. The engine ran smoothly with plenty of power before the maintenance and runs the same afterwards. It does startup faster after cleaning and I've been able to adjust the carborator leaner since the maintenance. Overall I feel great that I've inspected the engine, it is in good condition, it's clean, and runs like a champ. See the attached before-and-after picture. Next week I'll do the same to the 1067. Thanks to everyone on this thread for giving me the confidence and approach to trying this out. Al.

When pulling bushes root ball and all from the earth if the soil is very dry and hard, soak the area around the bushes well with water and wait an hour or so. I learned that the hard way. I had good sized evergreen bush I wanted to pull out on a very hot, dry stretch of weather years ago. I had a 1973 3/4 ton 4x4 Chevy with a 500 gal. water tank full of water in the truck bed and a 25 foot log chain attached to the bush and rear step bumper hitch. An automatic transmission in low gear and gear drive transfer case shifted into low range......... I left some slack in the chain and mashed down on the gas pedal. When I hit the end of the slack, The truck instantly came to a dead stop, Some of the water shot out of the tank, went on and over the roof onto the windshield and hood. The engine cooling fan was now rubbing on the fan shroud making a terrible racket and the trucks motor mounts were broke...... The bush was still in the ground and the neighbors were laughing and pointing. I walked to the garage to get a shovel and a towel........ Please be very cautious. You dont want the tractor on top of you.....

Today I came home with the pickup loaded to the top with cedar mulch to put around the garden. So the wife & I loaded the trailer on the driveway and moved all of it to the back yard garden. I lost count of how many full loads it took to empty the truck but we got it all done today. At the garden, we had to shovel he mulch into buckets and carry it into the garden perimeter. I also lost count of how many times I had to climb on and off that seat! A Charger12 and 10 cu ft trailer. G.

Make sure that when you buy them you get fresh ones. I used to use the Elmer's pens, but they got hard to find. I now use Sharpie. Look for a date code. Don't expect the paint to cover in one pass. That hood took about 4 coats plus minor touch-up. When I do the plastic dash panels, it always takes at least 3 coats. Maybe I can give you some hands-on lessons at the big show.

It is like a train wreck you can not help but keep looking at it. I feel sorry for the horse.

Is there one on the top as well Terry? Some of my older guards have one on top and bottom and they definitely have to be there. I had the tip of one come off while mowing and it was a "grind" to get it back to the barn! Check it to see if there was one on at one time. I think they were spot welded on so you might be able to see those.spots. They do wear down but easy to build back up with a bit of brazing rod.

The deck that came with my 520-HC was all cracked up, bent up, and badly welded on so it was time for a rebuild. First, it was totally stripped down. Then a good pressure washing to see it better. Next was to cut off the reinforcement plate (it had been welded on) and sandblast the deck. Holy cracks batman. There were cracks on cracks and blobs of weld everywhere. Cracks are now welded up. 2 of the spindle mounts have been totally replaced. Bolt and rod welded on for bagger mount. There is one thin spot to fix still but it is otherwise done and ready for paint. All brackets, spindles, mounts, guards, idlers etc have been totally rebuilt or replaced as necessary ready to bolt on once deck is done. I have 3 48" decks here and this one is in the best shape. The other 2 are rusted badly.

The drive belt doesn't operate the deck. That's a shorter belt on the second pulley down to the deck. The drive belt is a 1576 which is 1/2" x 70" No problem with the questions. We all like them. Nobody will tell you to take a hike unless you're asking for things to to while visiting the Smokies. Here's the owners manual:

Use the rubber cement along with the pen. If the paint dribbles on the cement, after it dries it will rub off with your hand,

It had a few. Hammer & dolly to get the dents out, then Rage Gold filler. I am no body man either. Practice, practice, practice. The hood was painted with acrylic urethane automotive paint.

I'd kind of like to have it just to hear everyone talk as they walk by it at shows! Out of curiosity, how much are they asking for it? Too far away and I couldn't afford it right now anyway, but you've got to admit it has a kind of kooky kool factor to it!

Not sure but I think member @formariz had some of those diodes. If memory serves me correctly, the charging system is 3 Amp and if running for long periods of time it was recommended to remove one of the diodes so the battery doesn't over charge. There is no regulator in this system, just the rectifier to transform AC to DC power.

Looks like I may have to "borrow" Cleat's blade linkage. Remove the chain and put in a solid bar, because I need some down pressure on the blade when I'm pushing firewood. I'm wondering how the linkage would work if it was made like this, connecting to a pin at the rock shaft and having a slot to hook to the blade. I was thinking that I could hold down on the lift lever and put down pressure on the blade, and then when I didn't need down pressure, just raise it enough so the blade could work up and down in the slot.

Found it on eBay when I was getting ready to buy the Dxi thought it would come on handy, has a factory dealer service manual for the tractor as well as the hydraulic system as well as the sales and marketing literature all originally from TORO for the dealers in 1998 when the Xi series first rolled out, so no more guessing prices,Jeff.

I've seen, lot's of people recommend... the paint pens and a steady hand.

Got lucky kind of... sort of. I have a c-160 that must have been put away with very little to no gas. After some tinkering fired up about the first time I tried but did not stay running. A few days of having to track down a condenser later and off it went. By then though I had the points and new hoses, etc. But was less than 3 minutes maybe even 2 to fire up that first time

Perhaps a 702. Yours looks too fast for you to outrun it.

Deck assembled, decals installed, blades balanced and installed. Installed deck onto 520-HC. Still need to test out bagger whenever grass starts to grow.

i learned about engines by doing. dragged home quite a few engines from the scrapper that i brought back to life, some ran really good, others sounded like they were about to blow up. some of them were for education only
