8 pointsI have less than 1,000.00 in what you see. Each one was saved from the scrapper, what I enjoy the most. I mowed with the 520xi IN THE SNOW today, at one point I had to squint to see the house.....Now I can say that I have done that. KJC

7 points5-16-1956 GM dedicates new technical center On this day in 1956, executives from the Detroit-based automotive giant General Motors (GM) dedicate the new GM Technical Center in Warren, Michigan. Costing around $100 million–or about half a billion in today’s dollars–to develop and staffed by around 4,000 scientists, engineers, designers and other personnel, the GM Technical Center was one of the largest industrial research centers in the world. The two men most responsible for the size and scope of the Technical Center were Alfred P. Sloan Jr., the enormously influential chairman of GM, and Harley Earl, whom Sloan made GM’s chief stylist in 1927. Earl had made his name with the design of the 1927 LaSalle. Built by Cadillac, the LaSalle was the first production car to boast a sleek, long, rounded exterior, and its popularity made it a trendsetting model for years to come. When Sloan suggested that GM build a compound to house the company’s research projects, the ever-style-conscious Earl urged him to create a structure that was architecturally and aesthetically distinctive. Sloan and Earl turned to the Finnish-born architect Eero Saarinen, who had previously been known for his work in collaboration with his father, noted architect Eliel Saarinen. The GM Technical Center was the younger Saarinen’s first independent project, and it would bring him immediate acclaim. Construction began in 1949 and was completed in 1955. Among the center’s strikingly modern buildings were a 132-foot water tower made of stainless steel and a gleaming aluminum dome that housed the GM styling auditorium. Saarinen was meticulous about the landscaping, planting more than 13,000 trees and 155 acres of lawn on the 330-acre site. The scale and visual beauty of the center invited comparisons to a 20th-century version of the royal complex at Versailles, in France. According to a New York Times article published in May 1956, some 5,000 of the nation’s leading figures in science, engineering, industry and education gathered in Warren, north of Detroit, for the opening of the Technical Center. At simultaneous meetings held in 61 cities around the country, others watched the ceremonies on closed-circuit television. The work conducted at the center ranged from purely scientific experiments and basic research to advanced engineering, styling and development.

6 pointsHi guys! I'm embarrassed to ask what is probably a really simple question, but I just acquired my deceased uncle's 1995 416-8 with a 48" SD mower deck and a 42" snow plow. Since my other herd consisted of 2 older steads plus a 99 Toro 15-38hxi wannabe, I'm a little stumped as to the proper process to dismount this mower deck. The Attach-a-matic works great, but the lift lever mechanism has been fully enclosed apparently on these newer machines, so I don't see a clear way to get the lift mechanism disengaged from the lifter chain. Is the only option to just disconnect the chain where it connects to the mower? My other 2 (854 & '69 GT-14) both have solid rods/bars running from the attachment up to the lift mechanism. All I had to do was reach in, pull a cotter pin and pop it off. I downloaded every manual I could find from this site, but nothing seems to reference this question directly. For those who just want to know the details...this thing is relatively clean, the hour meter shows 673 hours, and it has the Onan P216 engine on it. Seems to fun fine except boy does this mower deck load up the engine briefly when the PTO is engaged. And I'm going to need some practice using the clutch to keep from doing wheelies each time I stop and start again! Here's a few pics. I'm guessing the shield over the engine was to keep excess grass/leaves out of the fan??? My aunt says he only used it to vacuum leaves in the back woods each fall. Thanks for your help/advice! As always, you guys rock! Joe

6 pointsA good source for front wheel bushings used on some of the early Wheel Horse tractors like 701/702 and attachments. Reasonably priced also! http://www.sjmparts.com/bearings-bushings/flange-wheel-bushing-noma-39979-215-145

5 pointsHad a set of newer stile hub-caps that were surface rusted, I cleaned them up with Aluminum foil [that's correct aluminum foil work great, just fold it a few time's and rub of the rust] painted the hub-caps like the older stile. What do you think?

5 pointsThe ligt mechanism will slide out of the deck hanger when you begin to slide the deck out from under the tractor. Sometimes there may be a clip which needs to be removed, but more often than not that clip is long gone. When you disconnect the quick attach, lower the lift arm, then begin to side the deck out. You should see the lift bar detach (the pin on the lifter just slides our of the slot in the mower carrier). Once it is free, you can raise the lift arm to get the lift bar out of the way as you slide the deck out. Give it a shot, it should be self explanatory when you get things disconnected.

5 pointsWell, round two went to the tree, but there was some movement. At this point if I had been pulling on anything except a lawn that I didn't want to wreck I think 'Hagred' would have triumphed, however. Out came the saw again, another four feet plus brush removed. Hooked the twine onto a branch under the trunk and gave it the beans, no contest. The winner, the (with a little help from his mate Johnsreds) I suppose the moral to the story is, as capable as these machines are there are still limits, but you gotta have a go.

5 pointsSo I had a guy call on one of my old outboards I was selling and after talking I found he was a pin stripper..... Deal done!

4 pointsJust got my first trailer the other day. Got tired of loading RJs in the van and I no longer have a truck. On top of it all only the RJs would fit in it . Also wanted to use trailer to get mulch and that kind of stuff used around the property all the time so I built the box . Then I am looking at it and figure that when not in use its going to get full of dirt and get all wet and it's just a waste. So why not cover it and park a tractor in it? One less for the little woman to complain about I thought. So here it is . Problem though is that now she thinks I completely lost my mind. I tell her that is just not possible since it still works well but she just will not hear it. I am willing to bet however that Grand kids are going to enjoy the tractor rides even more now .

4 pointsFirst of all, thank you all for clarifiying my dilemma! I figured it was something stupid, but never too embarrassed to ask! Oh, and as far as that green thing in the background, that's not mine...these pics were taken at my uncle's barn. My aunt seemed to think the green thing was better/easier to use than the Wheel Horse, but believe me, I tried to convince her otherwise. Not because I wanted the JD, but I just hated to take the good equipment and leave her with green junk. Like I always say "Nothing runs like a Deere...being chased by a Horse!" Thanks again guys, and next time I'll try just following the instructions everyone so diligently posts on here before trying to over-think it!

4 pointsThe 50 inch sickle bar on our 1965 1054-A is a model is an SMS-50 model and has a one inch wider front attachment plate to fit the 1054 frame. The pictures Craig (AMC RULES) posted show the SML-506 which is like yours and one inch narrower to accomodate your frame width. I believe that in Craig's second and third pictures you can see the rear support rod attachment which also shows the locking collar. I think the locking collar can be loosened at the set screw to allow you to place the rear support piece shorter or longer to adjust to your frame. You might check that to see if you can adjust to your tractors.

4 pointsI finally have a running . After installing the new cam I also had to get a new rod. The rod was good until I misread the torque wrench. The threads will pull out at 260 in lbs. Another lesson learned the hard way.

3 pointsSaw this on Facebook today and thought I'd share it here. Don't know what brand it is. I never was into lawn mowers. Looks like a custom job. But it looks really cool doesn't it?

3 pointsI can just hear the Daddy Goose telling the young ones about the marsh that used to be here when he was a kid.

3 pointsI'll tell ya what embarrassing is. Getting on your hands and knees to remove the mower deck from your mother-in-laws .while she is in the garage to help if needed....... Your shirt moves up and your pants move down. I believe its a condition called plumbers butt..................

3 pointsA few more details needed to give the Stallion the finishing touch. Engine air screen "Horsed", steering wheel "Horsed", Terry's 520 decals. Let's "Horse around."

3 pointsThere are no "stupid" questions...we have all been there at one time or another.

3 pointsThe Horse will help shed his deck. See the other thing turned green with envy! Red is for the blood we shed!

3 pointsBoy this is a puzzler... your vid really does show the deck running nice and smooth.... plenty of tension (too much??) I have decks that the belt jumps around like the world's oldest profession in church and nary a problem. On one of my decks the slide moves (bounces) back and forth 1/4 -3/8 of an inch but it is the style that rides on nylon u-shaped blocks. The only thing I notice is the belt rides on the idler a little low but not serious. The reason I bring that up is I noticed one side of your belt is frayed worse than the other. Could it be trying to ride on the idler flange?
-
3 pointsShow him that you can remove and reinstall the Wheel Horse deck twice in the same amount of time it takes just to remove a JD deck. I was reminded of that again a couple weeks ago when I replaced the spindles and idlers on my son-in-laws green thingy. It's a good thing no young ones were near me Ya gotta wonder.....if nothing runs like a deer why do they use horses in the Kentucky Derby?

3 pointsIt was a cool and windy day (50 F) after an all night rain, but the turnout was real good. The thing I like about this show, always has some things you have never seen before. Not sure if this is a 1/4 scale replica, but if it is, it is really done nice. I really liked this. Gotta love M&M's...no chocolate mess. How many of you guys know that Jacobson only made the Oliver garden tractors in 1972?? 5 different kinds. Here are all the Panzer shots. Gotta have some Fords.
-
3 pointsNot sure who actually manufactured the Wheel Horse sickle bar mowers Steve. I am pretty sure though that it started with the same manufacturer that they used for the two wheel front sickle bar version that was later converted to use on the four wheel RJ tractor. I also have an RJ front sickle mower which I restored and made a plastic guard for to display at shows.. See before and after photos.
-
3 pointsThe belt should not be touching the guard. You may have a belt that is too long which will allow the engaging idler pulley to ride up higher and the belt will rub. The guard may move up a little if you loosen all the bolts. It's possible it's mounted just a little low allowing the belt to rub.

2 pointsi just got back from looking a suburban and wondering what the far price would be. working on the pictures http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/RUSSELLMC301/library/?view=recent&page=1 The deck is in great under for the age is figured either 400 but could be 401. doesn't run now but has good compression and trans seems to be good. messed with for a little bit and shifts into all gears and everything seems to be there but the pully guards on engine to trans. can easily be made though, any help will be nice
-
2 pointsNo significant difference to its value. So might as well do it up the way you wish to do so.
-
2 pointsIt's just paint, if you decide to sell it someday and the next guy don't like the color then he/ she can always change it.

2 pointsGeez I wish my decks ran that smoothly and quiet -- They don't but I am not loosing belts every time I use it -- Hope this gets figured out!

2 pointsfirst...Welcome to Red Square...and you are just up the road from me. I am not familiar with your horse, but I am going to say that there is probably a tow valve that you open and then you can push the tractor. What year is your horse?? Scroll down the Main Page to the Manuals Section...open that up and click on the years that contain your horse. You are looking to down load the IPL and it should tell you where and how to work the tow valve. I am going to call attention to @gwest_ca ...he is our resident manual guy. I hope he can help you if the manuals are not there for you horse.

2 pointsHi, what happened next, Im dying to know?. This is as good as Agatha Christie. what was it that killed the belts And if nothing else it would be instructive. Are you using the same deck this year.......... Andy

2 pointsIt's actually too cool outside to work with paint. In late May! Crazy. Anyway, I took the opportunity to finish the muffler set up. I had ordered perforated stainless off fleabay and it fortuitously cam in while I am sitting on my thumbs doing shop clean up etc. I don't really have an easy way to trim it so I ordered size that was close to what ideally I thought I'd need. I figured it would be 1/2 inch too long and it is. But I can live with it since it's a worker....or will be after the show. The piece I ordered was 12 X 12. I used 5 inch stainless clamps to keep the shape and snug it up against the tabs or stops on the muffler and a couple stainless sheet metal screws through the perforation into two of the tabs to keep the set up from sliding around. The decals arrived from Terry. They look AWESOME! Can't wait to get this thing assembled.

2 pointsI have used every conceivable belt available. The result is identical in all brands used. Kevlar belts no difference. Toro belts are actually the ones that failed the fastest. They actually snapped.
-
2 pointsSo after another 4 hours of mowing I am pretty sure I still have a problem . I did keep old belt already with some cracks in it but now as you can see from photos it is much worst. It already has some of the usual chunks missing . I video taped deck engaged at full speed and as you can see it runs smooth and true. Belt is not flopping around at all. I had even resharpened already sharpened blades. I am stumped!!! I am going to now change belt to a new one and see how that goes. These new ones I got now are the cheapest ones I found for $8.00 each shipping included. Hopefully that is the secret, a cheap belt. .IMG_0225.MOV

2 pointsWe've got a lot of rain here the past few springs and early summers. I don't like to mow when it's wet but sometimes I just have to. I'm still working and I just have to mow when I get the chance. It makes a lot more work cleaning up the afterwards. The wet and muddy pic are from a couple of weeks ago. The pic of me on the B-80, my young 'un took. I'm trying out an extra 36" SD deck that I've never used. Been using 36" RD deck for 22 years. That was a different experience I must say. Had to do some thinking ahead when mowing around things. The RD deck is undergoing some repairs.
-
2 pointsSetting the points to .020 is only the beginning. It's like the initial 2-1/2 turns on the main jet of a carburetor. It's just a starting point. The static timing method shown above is in my opinion the best way to time a Kohler engine. The other important thing to remember when doing the "static" method, to rotate the engine in the proper direction. Clockwise when viewing from the flywheel side, counter-clockwise if viewing from the PTO side.

2 pointsI bought a new plastic fuel pump for $35.00 on ebay for a k301. I bought a new spindle for $50.00. Bearings were $10.00 . Just trying to help. Shop it a little this stuff is out there. Good luck!,
-
2 pointsWhat you describe is how a bad condenser would act. When cold, the condenser is ok, but when it gets up to engine temp, it begins to fail....resulting in no engine spark. Now, I don't know if the Onan engines have the condenser like a Kohler has, but it is just a thought. Dave

2 pointsGood News. After inspecting the tension pulley on the mower deck, I popped the trunion loose and gave it a few turns and the mule drive belt quit slipping. Thanks everybody! Greg
-
2 pointsI did notice that the steering wheels on them English Wheel Horses are in the same spot as our North American WH's...HHHMMM... So, does that mean you drive the WH's down the center of the road???
-
2 pointsHard to tell if it is mowing properly, why don't you come to my place and do a couple of cuttings to be sure?
-
2 pointsI have recorded just a little over 3" of rain in May......and it's not even 1/2 over!
-
2 pointsI consciously and purposely refuse to mow when its wet. It just creates too many problems........in both the yard and with the machinery. But.......I'm retired, more or less, and I can pick and choose my times to mow. Here in north central Indiana, we typically have dew in the mornings in the spring......and quite often most of the summer...and quite often heavy dew...that can almost soak your boots....unless we have a summer like 2012 when we had 60+ days of 90+ degree temps with no rain. You could have mowed at 6 am........but there was nothing to mow that year. I went 8-10 weeks without even starting the tractor to mow. It's been raining here a lot recently and has the row crop farmers completely stalled out field work wise. They are as nervous as whores in church........they wanna plant.......but they can't........conditions aren't right...... To fulfill their insatiable appetite to get something done and feel productive, they are mowing whether its wet or not, because once they can really "hit it" in the fields, it may be a month before they can mow the side ditches again. I mowed after 3 pm today and used the sweeper to clean up my hay field yard. Its suppose to rain again tonight and tomorrow, and again Monday night, Tuesday, and Tuesday night. Spring in Indiana......but a little on the cool side. Forecast says low of 37 tomorrow (Sat.) night. C'est la vie............
