SWEET MOTHER OF PEARL.....I found it Here's what the guy has in the listing You won't see this in many Craigslist ads, maybe ever. This is one of the most rare Wheel Horse tractors ever made. Estimates are that around 600 were ever made, and only 25 or so are known to exist in original condition. This is one of them. This has the 8HP Wisconsin AEN engine and what I believe is a Ford Model A transmission (or something very, very similar to it), with one Reverse and three forward gears. This item will be on display at a downsizing sale this weekend, Friday and Saturday April 29th and 30th at 67 Stull Run Ln, Grottoes, VA. You may feel free to make offers, but this price is based on rarity and condition so low ball offers will be quickly rejected Check out the horses this dude has in the background...some nice round hoods it appears.... Is this guy a member here??? ...if not we need to recruit him (I'll even pay for his supporter status for some seat time) and get him to bring his harem to the Big Show!!!

So I wanted a Wheel Horse for a while, then I got one. One is good right? Well one soon turned into four. I'm fine, only gonna collect made be fore 1968, I have control of this. Then I found this tractor and had to have it. This tractor thing is not an addiction, is it? What I brought home is a McLean Husky made in Indianapolis some time around the 50's or 60's. Not sure on the year, there is not a lot of info on these machines. I did read that McLean was acquired by Wheel Horse, but I don't know if this info is accurate or not. This thing is in really bad shape and has been altered by a previous owner. I'm really hoping that I can find enough info to get this thing back in shape. I'm thinking this project will quite an challenge. Below is the transmission. From what I've read it should be belt drive to the transmission, the trans consists of a selector for different chain drives 2 speeds or a reverse gear set to a chain drive. Then belt drive on each side back to a sprocket then finally chain drive to each rear wheel. This really doesn't leave a differential for the drive wheels, to accomplish that they ran rods from the steering to the tension pulleys for the post transmission belts to loosen the belt on the inside of the turn. Complicated but sounds like it would work, hopefully I can make it work. I'll start a new thread on the restoration once I get started on it. If any one has any info or pics of one of these, I would be extremely grateful!

Just an FYI. There is a nice '55-56 WH Senior for sale on the Richmond, VA Craigslist (tractor is actually in Harrisonburg). It's nice but not cheap, $5.5k. Check it out when you get a chance (I know we're not allowed to post CL links in the forum).

25hp 4000rpm governed modified class. 7 inch front pulley, 8.1 mph. Stock rear end, 56 hp. Kohler Command. This was a nice start to the year. Was getting sick of playing with different belts and pulleys. I think I got it now. VideoEditor1 (1).3gp

Well, for me, hopefully I'm providing a few useful hints. I've already posted my vehicle pics.......you definitely aren't going to miss or confuse what I will be driving. My wife volunteers a lot at the local hospital and goes to lots of meetings, seminars, conferences, etc. So she has the clear plastic name tag thingies with safety pin clasps for name cards. This afternoon, I created my own......complete with RS user name, given legal name, and city of residence.....which I will be wearing, btw. If someone can't figure out who I am with these clues, I'll have to totally recalibrate my approach.

4-29-1986 Roger Clemens strikes out 20 batters in single game On April 29, 1986, in a game against the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park, Roger Clemens of the Boston Red Sox becomes the first pitcher in Major League Baseball to strike out 20 batters in a nine-inning game. Ten years later, Clemens repeats the feat, the only player in baseball history to do so. Clemens was drafted in 1983 by the Red Sox as the 19th pick overall and made his debut with the team on May 15, 1984. Two years later, on April 29, the 23-year-old Clemens broke St. Louis Cardinal Steve Carlton’s record of 19 strikeouts in a nine-inning game, which was set in 1969 and duplicated by the Mets’ Tom Seaver in 1970 and the California Angels’ Nolan Ryan in 1974. In 1962, the Washington Senators’ Tom Cheney had 21 strikeouts in 16 innings. Kerry Wood and Randy Johnson each recorded 20-strikeout games after Clemens; however, the “Rocket” as Clemens is known, is the only pitcher in the history of baseball to do so twice. Clemens struck out 20 batters for a second time while pitching for the Red Sox on September 18, 1996, in a game against the Detroit Tigers at Tiger Stadium. He was so fond of striking out batters, he gave each of his four children names that started with the letter K, the symbol for strikeout. Clemens spent 13 seasons with the Red Sox, during which time he won three Cy Young awards, an annual honor given to the best pitcher in the Major League. He then pitched two seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays and took home the Cy Young award twice more while leading the league both seasons in strikeouts, ERA and wins. Clemens joined the New York Yankees in 1999 and won his first World Series that season. On June 14, 2003, while playing for the Yankees in a game against the St. Louis Cardinals, he recorded his 300th win and 4,000th career strikeout. Clemens was the 21st pitcher in the history of the majors to become a 300-game victor and just the third pitcher (after Steve Carlton and Nolan Ryan) in baseball to rack up 4,000 strikeouts.

Just searched for your thread and think I might try to do just that...for no more than that little fan costs it's worth a try. Thanks

That looks very similar to the one on GT14 Hydro's. If you can't locate one, I posted a thread on how to duplicate one using a similar fan from McMaster Carr. Under GT14 hydro fan. Probably could use same fan with slight mod.

That's a problem with these swap meets and get togethers. Unless you've been around for a while, you don't know who is who when you end up in the same place. I recognize a few guys, but not many. We all need tattooed to our foreheads with our user names. My son and I will be there about 9am till whenever. Red GMC Sierra crew cab. We'll be dressed warm. I'm built like you minus the pony tail. Best I can say from going last year, as well as Scott's meet and greet last fall, is that it's a group of good friendly people, just ask them if they are on Redsquare and you'll be having introductions in no time. Steve

Since I've never been to the meet at Mentone, or any Wheel Horse gathering for that matter, I have no personal acquaintance or introduction to anyone from here at RS who will be in attendance. For that reason, I'd like to describe myself. I assure you I won't be dressed in formal wear like Lane. I don't have a pic of myself readily at hand, but I'm 6'4" in height, about 275 lbs, and have a pony tail. I'll be in jeans most likely with either a navy blue hooded sweatshirt, Carhartt jacket, or if it's precipitating enough, perhaps a yellow rain slicker jacket. If you can't identify me by this description, look for the vehicle below. It's a beige '85 Chevy Caprice Estate Wagon. I'm sure it will be the only thing like it at Mentone. Only 66,500 miles on her. My name is Steve (ztnoo) and I'm from Gas City. Hope to meet lots of you Wheel Horse fanatics.

Thanks red ranger. I think I found a couple campgrounds not too far from Mentone It's an enclosed equipment trailer that I camp in. I like the word Michiganian but it's awfully long so I guess I prefer Michigander

Ahhh ... TRuck/cAMPER. I get it. "Michigandy"? LOL

You always start with a compression check. If the patient has a bad heart, there is no use in doing exterior things till that surgery is complete.

I don't have a D, but I can relate a small story about those vintage Onans. In 2004, Florida got hit by three hurricanes. Charley, Frances and Jeanne. I had recently completed a Class C RV restoration with a 1976 twin cylinder Onan generator onboard. The generator got an oil change and new plugs during the restoration if I recall. Who knows how many hours were on the meter of the engine itself. Long story short, my house had an additional 5 people besides my wife and myself during the hurricanes. All told we were out of utility power for two weeks. The Onan ran 24/7 for two weeks. I shut it down once to change the oil, crossing my fingers that it would relight after the oil change. It did. A Briggs engine box store portable generator I had at the time blew its rectifier diodes after about 10 hours if I recall. Needless to say, I hold the twin cylinder Onan engines and generators in high regard.

So it's a 5 + hour drive for me from northern Michigan. But I'm adding a trip down to Indianapolis Friday night to pick up some Wheel Horse stuff so that will add another 6 hours of driving before I reach Mentone. Can't wait. See you there Steve.

It's probably down in the hood , that's where I found my 58 . I never seen my son so scared , he thought for sure we're going to get carjacked . If you could have seen his face . Priceless

Well, today was weld the seats day. Looks like it's gonna overlap into tomorrow too!! The way this will be transported, (which is a closely guarded secret!) requires that it be able to be a completely flat deck, so all of the seats are made to be removable easily via some pins. Adds some work, but no other way to do it, without buying a 12 foot longer hauler!! That ain't gonna happen!!! ps ... thanks for all the nice comments. It means a lot to me that you guys like this, as I have a great respect for this "crowd"!!!

Thanks Jim Yep, as Nigel says.. Left to right.. Diff lock, gears (4 forward 1 reverse), high/low ratios and finally PTO.. There is also a handbrake lever low down on the left side. I'm quite clean now Jim, WN has a bit less mud on her too With not much left to do on HG apart from fitting a fuel tap and decals we decided to get her off the bench and out into the sun for a good look.. Me likes

Hello all new to the site, I have a Wheel Horse with an Onan D 160 16 horse twin cylinder engine BF-MS model if I remember right I believe it's a 1976. I bought it a few days ago changed the coil, rebuilt the carb, plugs, standard tune up. I tried to start it and it is back firing through the exhaust, carb, and smoking everywhere. Also shoots the dip stick out and oil all over. Haven't had a chance to test anything yet but any suggestions where to start? And thanks for any input you can give this is my first Wheel Horse really want to fix it up.
  36. 1 point
Well guys I got the old horsey to fire! It won't run on its own because somethings wrong with the carb but it does run! It ran for 2 seconds

It's not difficult to adjust. Disconnect the trunnion a the end of the PTO rod and rotate it on the threads. Turn it clockwise to move the PTO hub in toward the engine and vice-versa. Then reconnect.

This road was built back in the late 1970s on the mountain behind my house. It was used as a core drilling road. The wood I rolled off the mountain is below this road and I couldn't get to it with any machinery besides my 4 wheeler. This road now has trees grown up int it, in addition to some rocks and dirt slide off the bank onto the road. Now that I have access to my late father in law's Case tractor, I can use it to pull firewood out of the woods on this road. Of course, I don't want to damage the Case, so I took the Wheelhorse out to work the road. I needed to move sharp rocks, trees, and whatever else might bust a tire on the Case. I think the rear tires on that thing are just under $1,000.00 each. That's my story anyway. Actually, I just like to grade a road, make that any road, with the Wheelhorse. And this is a compilation of 3 or 4 different road grading excursions. I speeded it up quite a bit, so it wouldn't be to long. I have worked about 1/2 a mile of the road that is on my property. After I filmed all this, I went back with the chain saw and cut some of the trees that would get in the way of the Case. This coming weekend I may film a ride over the road on the ATV and show the results of all this grading. It looks pretty good now, to hear me tell it. And if any of you have ever pulled logs, you know that they have a tendency to grade the road themselves.

Thanks Guys- I finished the job today- OEM filter from TORO- and 4 quarts Dextron iii- ran it- checked Full- FYI- The tractor transmission ran even smoother after the change- it had a "FRAM" on it. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it- OEM for me ( no experience with the NAPA Filter- it may be OK- Thanks- Al

Evening guy's, here's the last and final update on the Project Horse Gut story.. As some of you will know Nigel and I got an offer we just couldn't refuse.... So she went off to a new home.. Loaded in the trailer... The poo trailer was taken on a second trip before you all wonder how it was fitted in I can't sing, so I won't finish on a song... So let's finish with a video instead... Bye bye Horse Gut, it's been fun and a good laugh..

Ok, everyone wants pictures so I'll try to post some. This is one of my fleet. I fixed er up about 15 years ago. Mostly just needed paint. I'm thinking its a 72, maybe somebody can tell me what year it is for sure.

Jeff. I'll have to look at my two 48" blades tomorrow. I don't think they have any slots on the back side for skids. I have not used them, but many on here have put plastic scraper bars on their snow blades to prevent scuffing of their blacktop coating. I am sure they will have answers for you.

Some people just don't care , have a clue ( common sense ) or see the worth of somethings keeping it whole . We see it all the time even on here . Buy on one site , next week you see the parts on another . Not to say I haven't taken advantage of people doing this . Probably half of my parts I've acquired this way. IMO It's hard for me to see something running or near complete to part it out .

Aw Shucks ! Matt. Ok , but I reserve the right to change my mind if it doesn't work out. Can you wait until I at least get the Hood back from Blast and Powdercoaters?. I took it in today. I'll try and do a 'Mock up' for you when I get it back. tom, if you google that spec number, your engine was originally on a cub cadet 1211. and its a magnum whereas richards's is a k series..... i think i remember richard saying early on that this engine was off something else. the flywheel shroud is a give away as well..... Thankyou Martin for the response on my behalf...... Tom. Yes . Martin is correct. my Engine is from a 1981 Triple Gang Mower. I had to rebuild and adapt it. So it is not original. . Thankyou Rich. It's pretty reasonable considering. It should pass as a 3 Footer before it gets dirty. Had to Backtrack on a little job that had to be re-done. Back near the start of this Thread/project, I mentioned the Steering issue with the Lower Rod and Quadrant being welded out of line and the need for WH to fit Adjustable Steering Rods. I look's like this- Well, I eventually paid a visit to see Ian (Stig) and amongst other 'Thingy Bits' , he furnished me with a replacement Lower Rod...... A big Ian !. 48hours later, the part had been cleaned, stripped, primed, painted and fitted. It's in there somewhere- It's now snug fitting with zero play and I can now line up the Steering wheel Spokes with the Wheels straight. Another job I wanted to sort for a while was to 'Turn Up' new Bronze Bushes for the Rear Fender (I used Gunmetal) Did these on the Baby Lathe. I also Beefed them Up in proportion. Here is the First one just 'Parted off' from the Stock Rod, along with the remains of what came off the Tractor(on the Bolt) and a worn example for comparison- Next, I'll have to make and Harden new Steel Spacer Bushes, and a fair bit of work to do on the Fender when I get it back. Mainly the front Support and Seat Latch area (I'm putting a second beefier Latch on). Still looking at new Seats, May go for a Charcoal coloured High Back Toro Seat, or another Kab P2 (same as Euro original). That all for now, next one should have more content. Regards.
