15 pointsTook a 1/2 hour drive yesterday and came home with this 418A.I think it's a 1987.42 in side discharge deck looked much newer.I checked the serial number on the deck.It's a 2004.haven't tried starting it yet.Needs the obvious things.Battery,has hard brittle fuel lines,probably carb cleaning,etc.I was going to use my latest C-195 that has severe carb issues for cyclone rake duty.Think I'll push that one into the bone yard and use this 418A instead.It probably needs a lot less work.Here's some pics.Enjoy.

14 pointsbeen awhile haven't had this tractor out since last fall didn't have any snow to plow this year. Took off the plow and chains last week. put my ag tires on. all tires on this have washer fluid in them and wow what a difference it makes!! there a lot of weight pulling this roller especially when it is up and down hills. makes the ole 8 horse grunt a little . got into into an argument with a guy called my 857 a lawn mower dam I got mad . them things you buy at lowes and walmart a lawn mower i told him not this. them lawnmowers wouldn't pull this roller they would smoke the trans on them. was at my local lowes yesterday and looking at the crap they have there and no way in hell would spend that kinda money on them crapy green and orange mowers.

13 pointsI WILL BE 87 ON APRIL 21 I will not give up my wheel horses. I have had wheel horses since the 1950's. I broke my neck last dec. but still planning to go to the big show and about 9 more with my diesel wheel horse.

12 pointsHere are pics from today's first running of the RJ35. The only thing it still needs is the throttle control installed. I had my youngest drive it around for a while so I could take some good pictures. And we both agree that alot of people probably got hurt riding one of those, Things like .... the clutch is the shifter, freewheels down hill, very light in the front end, steers poorly due to lack of weight, one wheel brake throws you sideways. These are all things you have to pay attention to while driving. Oh.... and it can vibrate out of neutral into gear .... this I'm gonna fix! Does this tractor look small? My boy said that when he bought this truck it had a "WHEEL HORSE" sticker in the back window. Was it your's? OOPS.... he went by too fast! Body weight transfer is a must going up hill. Playing in the dirt.

7 pointsHi everyone I'm new to this forum. I have had c145 in the past. I now have a 520H that Dad had that I have inherited. It now runs very good had to go old school to fix it. Will be picking up a 96 416H on Monday. Looking forward to learning more from this group.

5 pointsThough it looks like that rear drive system would chew the tires up if you got stuck for long. On the other hand, he went through some pretty tricky spots. I can't figure out why he was walking with it instead of riding, though. This is pretty cool too...

4 pointsI think stress cracks happen to us all. If you don't have your own welder, find somebody that knows their stuff. I would stop drill the cracks. Which means drill an 1/8'' hole at the end of each crack. That will stop the crack. Thus the term, 'Stop drill.' A good welder will grind a grove in the crack and then weld over the crack. Your keen eye has prevented some future damage. Allow me to be the first to say. TO

3 pointsYour accident just proves that exercise can be a danger to your health. If the helmet had that much damage I would have X rays or other test to insure that there is no damage under your skull. Best of luck on your recovery.

3 pointsat this point, no data has ever been presented to confirm any reduction in rear cylinder temperature by ventilating the belt cover. Evidence shows more effort has been made to perform the mod than investigate the benefit (if any) realized from the mod. My sense is this mod falls squarely under the 500 series "tribal knowledge" category and best that can be said is (like chicken soup) "it couldn't hurt".

3 pointsNot sure I would call the repairs or mods discussed here as "hacking" up the wiring. Relocating the charge wire outside the 9 pin connector to the starter stud is a substantial improvement in reliability. Use of good quality, weathertite fuse holders beats the open air Delta fuse holder in a "molex meets manure" type environment. Covering the top of an older original fuse block is like closing the barn door after the horse is out. Also note the bottom of the Delta fuse holder still remains completely open to dirt, water and chaff.

3 pointsonly if you use a metal battery hold down. the offset [front to back] of the terminals requires the battery be oriented properly so the hold down would not touch and short out the battery terminals to chassis

2 pointsI do not like the violent sudden engagement of electric PTOs i prefer to feather a manual. Started working on a new to me Electro 12 that had an electric PTO. Look at the PTO key. I have seen damaged keys but this one obviously beat itself over the years. I am not sure what implement she will be married to but I may put on a manual PTO.

Says everything is there I was wondering if someone could help me find a parts diagram for it , even the tranny is all apart .cause he said it needed new seals.

2 pointsIst post on the forum. I bought a 1980 C-145A tractor last fall. I just took off the snow blade and was going to get ready to mount the 42" rear discharge mower deck. I noticed that when I got it that the deck had two cracks in it, by each of the brackets that hold the deck to the tractor. The cracks are only an inch or two long. Question is do I just have them welded or should I also have a piece put on from the bottom side of the deck so there is a larger area to bear the weight and stress?

2 pointsA friend made one up several years ago that was powered by a hit and miss. He used an old "hand crank ice cream maker" and a few belts and pulleys to slow it down, do an search for them, lots to pick from. By the way, I prefer Peach Ice Cream.

2 pointsSorry, don't know how to make ice cream or where to find the maker. I have eaten a lot of ice cream, tractor made at numerous shows. Hate to admit it, last show the grandsons pigged out on green ice cream with yellow sprinkles.

2 points@Retired Sparky,I guess weld repairs are a lot like gardening; we do it the way we were tough as kids and as long as we get a good result we did it the right way, even if it was done differently than another's "right way" PS, , the stop drill method also works for cracks in concrete slabs.

2 pointsRan out of steel, I need a couple more squares for the cylinder mounts and the cross beam above the bucket. I tacked on 2 squares and tried the cylinders, it is coming together quickly now. Finished all the pins. got the pump mounted, though I think I am going to have to rework the mount, I can't get the belt tight enough. Finished the angle braces. Beads are getting better. Test mounting cylinders Anyone have a clue what this O ring is for? It is on both the cylinders I fitted today. The specs said they had a wiper, but this isn't going to move once the cylinder extends.

2 pointsFormariz hit the nail on the head -- 1960 550 The 400 and 550 are the same exact tractor with a solid firewall but they used different engines. 550 would just have the extra stuff for the electric start A 400 would've had a Kohler K91 and a few were made with a Clinton B1290. Both pull starts A 550 would be electric start with a Lauson/Tecumseh H55 and the key would be just where yours is. I'm going with a 550. Of coarse it is always possible someone could've changed engines from a Kohler to a Lauson but it would still be factory correct.

2 pointsif you search the electrical forum, i posted a simple fix for this issue - maybe 2or 3 years ago. a simple process of inserting a capacitor across the flasher power line near the flasher body. the long power lines are acting as antenna and picking up ignition pulses from the spark plug wires.

2 pointsHere is the wiring diagram for the later model 520 like yours. Later model 520 wire diagram.pdf You can see how one side of both the 25 and 30 amp fuses tie together and go to the red wire which in turn goes to the battery connection on the starter solenoid via the 9 pin connector.
