I personally love the shade-tree engineering on that braking system! I wish had put brakes on the wheels rather than the transmission. i live on a mountain side and have had the brakes become rather useless because of the design. Since the brakes are on the transmission and the stopping power goes through the differential, the tire with the least traction will stop rotating and the tire with traction will freewheel. My neighbor was grading his driveway with his 310-8, bumped the shift lever with his knee and it slipped out of gear. He applied the brakes and one wheel was skidding and bouncing as he went faster and faster; when he got to the switch-back on the driveway he and the went over the edge. God was watching over him because his mid-mount grader blade snagged on some mountain laurel about teen feet down the bank stopping him. I like two brakes!

Been a while for updating this 1 too, picked up new tires for it, frame and hood are ready for paint, Basically just need to finish the hood and steering wheel. Finally started the body work on the hood today. Still quite a bit of time to spend on it, but off to a good start. Thanks, Jake

Well, here is my first try at making a gasket for my GT-14. Yep, my barn is cold and it was in the 20s here yesterday. First I tried my brass - or copper, or whatever - ball peen hammer. I think it was to soft. So I drug out the John Deere Green Ball Peen. It did better, but I just didn't feel right using a Green hammer on a Wheelhorse. And since I didn't have a red ball peen, I went with the blue hammer. I may have to paint one of the ball peen hammers Wheelhorse Red. The best I can remember, this is my first attempt at cutting a gasket. If anyone here has ever done this and knows how it is supposed to be done, I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Weather forecasters might as well be using a Ouija Board, Wednesday the schools were closed because of the impending snow storm and it was beautiful, this morning they said no singes of snow today, about 9:00 am the snow started and within an hour we had a couple of inches. , seat time! It only took a few minutes but was necessary since the daytime temperature would be above freezing and going down to the teens over night. By sundown I had a nice dry driveway.

SUGGESTION(s): (1) Remove the locating dowel(s) and flip case onto gasket material....on flat surface. (2) With pencil or ball-point pen (better), trace perimeter outline and all of the bolt holes. (3) With tracing complete, set case aside and use a 5/16 hole punch on the 6 bolt hole locations. (4) Flip case and pre-fit the pre-gasket to the case with the 3/8 bolts. (5) use Exacto knife to carefully trim around the inside perimeter and open 2 dowel hole locations. (I have a surgeon's scalpel) (6) Finally, remove the gasket and use ordinary shears to cut the OUTSIDE perimeter. Cutting away the waste of the outside perimeter (as a last step) is much easier to do when holding the gasket in-hand. You could, of course, use the exacto knife on the outside perimeter while it is still held to the case by those 6 bolts...as in step 5.

Nice....gasket and video. When I was still working, I installed a lot of 1/32, 1/16, and 1/8" thick vellumoid gaskets on irregular shaped flanges. I glued the sheet to the flange with spray glue, then used an x-acto knife to cut the edges and the holes. This worked very well, but of course you could not remove the gasket.

whoever designed and made that setup looks to have known what he is doing. I will admit the brake on most of my horses is more for show than anything else...

Funny you should mention this subject. I was just out in my workshop today lining up my WH projects for this spring, and deciding what to bring and what to sell. Temperature is going down to zero this weekend, so the work can't be started for awhile. I'm going to my first show of the year next weekend. It's the Lebanon Valley show in PA, and the feature tractor is all Garden Tractors. I've got cabin fever and the Wheel Horse itch. Jim

We will be having an Iowa show July 9th 2016 at East Lake County Park in Osceola IA. Osceola is located in the area of Hwy 34 and I35. We hope to get as many Wheel Horse tractors there that we can. There will also be a few off brand tractors also. Feel free to bring as many lawn tractors as you wish and it is ok to bring parts/tractors for sale. This event is going to be a meet/greet/swap and just to hang out and talk about the hobby that we all love! Feel free to email me if you wish matt.herr@titanmachinery.com Please mark your calendar and try to make this a great fun turn out. Thanks Matt Herr

You obviously know exactly how it is done! Yours is an old-school method that is tried and true and I have used it too. The only thing I have changed lately is I bought an inexpensive set of gasket hole punches, find the approximate location of the dowel and make a hole for it, then lay the material on the item to be sealed and make a hole at the other end (much as you did) and put a bolt in it. At this point it is held in place and now I take a piece of round stock (like a socket extension) and firmly rub it all around the edges of the casting. This will create an image of the casting on the gasket material and using scissors and the hole punches you can cut a very neat gasket. Probably a bit faster and a whole lot easier.

Somehow the notion of twenty-first century Chinese passengers appreciating the grandeur of a luxury liner fashioned after one from a century ago is a bit far-fetched to me. Some of the oil barons from the middle east may want to be on the maiden voyage as a lark, but long term this will sink financially. Today's yuppies just aren't likely to pass up a Disney cruise for this in my humble opinion!

Update one the parts.... The last few things I needed to get it running and driving are in. I'm waiting on my axle seals for the rear end and all thread for the tie rods to get here tomorrow. I will post pics as soon as everything is here. I ended up ordering an 8" pulley for the front end and a custom exhaust for the motor as well. Its pretty wild looking. Thinking about either painting it with high heat paint or maybe do an exhaust wrap on it. Not quite sure yet. I may also be cutting some out of the hood but I really dont want to. I'm also looking for another wheel horse to start another project. I will give some hints.....I plan on doing a lot from scratch and using a big motor.lol. Thats all for now. I need to find a wheel horse first. Hoping to find one that is original and weathered.

I ran a autobody shop for years and only directly oiled my tools. Absolute must for painting and prep to NOT have an oiler on the line! No real need for the oiler anyway, a couple drops of oil from time to time is fine. Nothing much worse than to have someone over-oil a tool and have it spit out oil all over a hood! Water filtration is something else! Another absolute must in high humidity shops! But put the water filter at the point of usage, NOT the compressor. Even that might not be enough. I swore I would add a cooling condenser but never did. If I had it to do over again I would, even if it were homemade, like a copper coil in an old refrigerator. I did use additional filters at the spray guns and sometimes other tools. Cheap, rather effective and only somewhat of an annoyance.

You might try toothpaste or some polishing compound. Although I've owned my WH for 30yrs. I still haven't learned everything there is to know about my tractor. I've only been on this site for a couple of months and I'm learning something new every week. Again, welcome to this site. Lots of great guys & gals with mountains of info.
