10 pointsA teaser pic of my son sitting on our new tractor. I'll post more later. Eating at Popeye's before heading back home. Great morning! And that's my dad standing beside him.

6 pointsJust a thought. Would it be possible to put on the banner that the support member was also a member of the WHCC? I'm sure the show organizers would appreciate it.

5 pointsMy in law went to a revival event at Brooklands the other day, and she brought this back. It was a table decoration but available to buy. I think its kinda funky.

4 pointsTommy, it was very nice meeting you and your family as well. Guys, if you get a chance to talk with Tommy, you'll see he's just like the rest of the horse heads I've met - truly nice and knowledgable. He even gave my son a wheel horse collector's club hat, key chain, and lawn and garden magazine. We had a great trip and look forward to playing with our new machine. Yup, Emory has already laid claim to it, but I'm still the primary stakeholder in this one. He kept saying that he had a great day!! Below are a few pics of the machine, Tommy, my dad, and son and one pic of Dad, Emory, and some goofy looking guy with a goatee . I've also put in a pic of a set of original wheel horse tires and rims for the back - plenty of cracks and checks, but still very nice. Both of the other rear sets are Carlisle and in pretty nice shape. Oh yeah, I took the hoods off to keep wind from grabbing them on interstate. Gotta go clean out a spot in the basement for the new girl.

4 pointsHere is your parts list https://www.partstree.com/parts/kohler-engines/engines-horizontal/k341-71179-kohler-k341-engine-k-series-service-engine-16hp-11-9kw-specs-71105-71384/ The 2nd ignition page shows the stator 237878-S as being 15/20 amp. Don't know how they get that but suspect it is the 15 amp as we know it and 20 amp if they stretch it like everything else. There was never a 20 amp regulator but there was a 25 amp. I'd go with the 15 amp. Garry

4 pointsHere's some pictures of when a storm blew this red oak tree over on the wheelhorse. I cut the tree off the tractor and used it to pull the tree to the firewood pile. "Revenge is sweet" saith the Wheelhorse.

4 pointsNice choice. I'm running the same tires (filled with ww fluid and weights) on my 520H. They are great for mowing on my hilly terrain. My first time using in snow was this last 30" storm we had in Md. Had to use chains and my son on the rear to clean up that one.
-
3 pointsBesides the gold lettering , gold badge in front and the gray plastic hub cap which I don't have what else was special about Anniversary 520 H? What spark plugs do these P220Gs like the best? One other question for now, I'm sure I will have more... Is straight 30w engine oil the best for these? I will only be using her in the summer. The Hydro oil looks clean but I am going to change it and I will put 10w30 in it. Here is a few more pictures.

3 pointsBased on very favorable performance of replacement LED marker lights for the rear lights on my 314, I decided to buy replacement bulbs for the headlights and tail lights on my 5xi and the tail lights on my 416H. The xi headlamp replacements are for an 1159 bulb and the tail lights for the xi and the 416 are 194. I bought the most powerful ones available within a reasonable cost. Headlamp replacement in the xi was a snap. Tail lights were a bit of a problem as LEDs only work in one polarity and of course those small 194 bulbs are not marked. Anyway with a couple of tries, I got them installed and working. The bad: I was very disappointed with the intensity, but at least they worked. Install on the 416 was not as positive. The receptacle design is cheesy and I never could get the 194 LED bulbs to consistently make electrical contact. More disappointment. I had to use the 5xi yesterday to move the wet slop that fell in MA. Midway through, one of the front headlights quit. As I was putting the machine away, I checked the tail lights. One was out and one was flickering. Today, I pulled out the tail light that was not working and I found that there was a thermal runaway condition due to poor connection between the bulb and the electrical socket. The ugly: the socket is burned a bit and the LED bulb was toast. I will have to get a replacement for that socket. I pulled out the other tail light, the flickering one, and there was evidence of a start of a similar thermal runaway. Replaced that tail light with an incandescent bulb and pulled the 1159 LED head lights and replaced them with incandescent as well. All three work. So my plan now is to get a set of red LED marker lights for the 416H (these are stand alone units and for $5 they offer superior intensity and they mount up to the original WH mounting holes-however, you have to drill a new hole for the power lead. It does not match up) As for anyone else who has gone down this road of replacing bulbs only, I suggest that you give a look to make sure your receptacles are not getting cooked as mine were.

3 pointsWell, I finally got some time to play around in the shop. The storage rack works, looks like I will have room for 4 to 5 decks. So far I have 2 shelves built, and decks lifted and stored. The rack is solid as a rock. I was planning on bolting it to the floor, but I don't think I need to. 60" and 52" xi decks loaded.

3 pointsThe paint and body work on this are a definite twenty footer, but it wasn't built to win shows, just to have fun with.

3 pointsI'm not an expert but I believe one of the electrical swami's will chime in hopefully. I believe the Kseries were 15 am systems so a 15 amp rectifier with three tabs AC -, B+, and AC + is what you need. I think if it has those three, it does not necessarily matter how they are configured. I went with with replacement that was new manufacture and 3 in a row rather than the configuration with the one stacked over the other two tabs for easier access when doing the re-wire. I hope an expert chimes in though and have "followed" this thread to get info myself.

3 pointsI've been working from home for the past 14 years. When the kids were younger it afforded me the time to be with them, get them from school, watch them play in the summer. They are older now, they're still at home but don't need to be watched like they did. I enjoy working from home for the most part, about 60% of my day requires interaction with others leaving the rest to be flexible. For me my job is based on the completion of my tasks, not time based so I have more personal flexibility at home.

3 pointsSad, but probably true Jim. Pay attention to the dates of these threads that get brought back up. I know I got caught a couple of times. Felt like Arron Rodgers when they lost to the Bears this year..

3 pointsGot 1 set of RJ side plates ready for paint today. I wanted to install all the bearings before paint for obvious reasons. I had a few burrs where I had to tap out the old bearings. I hit these with a punch and tapped down anything sticking up. I also filed any burrs on the side plate where the bolt holes are and used a hammer on each side to smooth any bumps. In the above picture, something got caught under the differential gear for a while. You can see the worn circle. Cleaned up and ready for the bearings. I'm not sure if I have to do anything about the wallowed out bolt holes yet. They may be OK...this sits on the gasket. If anything, I would fill with JB weld and use plastic wrap for where I did not want it to stick. ??? OK...there are 4 S8K open bearings, and 3 NICE 412-35 closed bearings that go in these side plates. The difference between open and closed bearings is the machining of the bearings themselves. I would call the open bearings on the sloppy side, and the closed bearings more refined and tighter. These bearings have the same ID 3/4" and OD 1 5/8" , but the thickness is different...S8K is 5/16" and the NICE 412-35 is 3/8". When you look at this picture...the left side plate shows where the differential carriage rides at the top...moving down shows an S8K where the brake shaft goes through...below that is the closed bearing that holds the cluster gear shaft...then at the bottom, the open bearing that holds the spline shaft with the fork gears. The plate on the right is a mirror image. The top is the differential carriage, below is the closed bearing that holds the large end of the mushroom gear...right and below that is the other closed bearing for the cluster gear shaft...and then you have the 2 open bearings that hold the input shaft.. I know...that is a lot to chew on, but the picture shows the correct placement of the bearings. Many times, I have opened a case to find different configurations. To seat the bearings, I tap them 1st with a ball peen to start them and then work my way around with the hammer until they are flush with the rim of the plate. You do not want to seat them all the way down, as they will bind...flush is what you want. The bearing should turn freely when seated. ] Now comes the bronze axle bearings. These come in the correct length...the differential carriage ones need to be cut to length first. I take a piece of 2 x 4 to tap in the bronze. Cleaning out the axle housing and a little oil on the outside of the bearing goes a long way. Get the bronze bearing down to flush with the 2 x 4 and then use an arbor to tap the bearing down the last 1/8" to accept the SKF 9815 seal. We are going to double seal these axles. A quick shot of the bronze bearings (both sizes) and then the outside of the RJ plates are primed. Paint was still wet.

3 pointsHey all, sorry for the lack of posting but things have been a bit ... well as Im sure you can guess, crazy. But here is where we stand currently ... The insurance company has settled with me, mostly. There are some issues in their estimate for things like removal of the old structure ... and replacing the foundation... but other than that I think we have it just about settled. Should be wrapping things up in the next 7-10 days .... then comes the tedious process of replacing everything and them issuing the checks to cover the difference between the Actual replacement cost, and the depreciated value they assigned all the possessions... I'm focusing on the warmer months, a new home, and the Big Show (I have a few things I want to bring home with me this year Hopefully!)

3 pointsAgree. I paid $1,500 for this 1982 SK-486. I just laugh when I walk through Home Depot and Lowes ... A 30 year old Wheel Horse is worth three times what is being sold in these stores and can be had for half the price.

2 pointsMarch 1969 Wheel Horse advertisement. GT-14 $1,495 with free mower deck. That's about $8,900 in today's dollars. These were premium machines in their day.

2 pointsWhere I live, just around the bend from USMA West Point, NY. 50 miles north of NYC on the mighty Hudson River. My '73 AMC Javelin AMX, fresh from paint back in the fall of '09. My '88 520-H set up for snow duty, fall '10. Out for a stretch today, Jan '11. :banghead:

2 pointsFor Hot Rod cars I like the subtle paint jobs but Why Not is a unique machine that deserves some attention. My vote is to go with "In Your Face" , loud and proud so everyone can tell what it's about from a distance. It's not like you need to run a sleeper for phishing tractor races so advertising fast and mean will let everyone know it's something special.

2 pointsBob: The two pulleys are on the shaft and they are separate but just alike. Two belts had to be running to the motor on this. The second pulley added would probably mean the Suburban tractor this was on would not have had its belt guard on due to belt clearance etc. This transmission if you look close had green pain on top of red at one time. It was a backup transmission that was owned by the RJ owner who used his RJ to plow his garden. The cracked center case (with three big weld beads on it) in some of the first pictures Steve posted on this thread was replaced with a second transmission by the RJ garden plow owner. The Suburban transmission I posted yesterday (the so called Fourth Transmission) has not been used for quite a few years!

2 pointsLooking like a major nest rehab project has started this morning.
-
2 pointsI'm just going to post these pictures of these 2 differentials and let you guys look at these and chew on them for a little while. One is the 2 piece and one is the 1 piece.
-
2 pointsOk I picked up a FOURTH TRANSMISSION today from a friend in Indiana. Axles turn on hubs but the shifter is locked in place. I heated this up in the garage today and opened up fill plug and seat spring bolts but no fluids came out of the transmission. I am taking this up to Steve on Tuesday to see if we may have some better spider gears out of the differential in this Suburban transmission (same as RJ inside but a few changes outside) We need three good spider gears and one axle gear to complete three good transmissions. Interestingly the Code on the top of this transmission case is K11%0 which I think translates to November 11, 1960 as date of production. Notice the two matching drive pulleys on the outside of the case.
-
2 pointsWishfull thinking Lane...the only way we could ever hope to see these bearings again is if an OEM decides to use them somehow in a mass production schedule. Not likely to happen unless Steve taps his ruby slippers ..I mean wooden shoes...together three times and even then it's a poke and a hope. It would take alot more than us handfull of addicts to get anybody to start producing them. Sorry but true....bean counters rule.......that was a bad rhyme....

2 pointsI'm there with ya @Mr. 856 I'm 30 and after a 10 year career I decided to let my wife take the reigns because she wanted a steady career and though I had an awesome job and great boss, I wanted a little more freedom. I get up with her in the morning at 5, make her breakfast and lunch, get my 6 and 8 year old girls up for school at 7 and leave the house just after 8 to get them to school. I own a business snow plowing but I'm really the only employee. Mrs. Pullstart can drive a mean plow truck too, if it's blizzard conditions and I need the help of one of my other trucks. Otherwise while the kids are in school, I have some odd jobs working on houses, cars, etc. and I have been making improvements on our house as well. Summertime, I'll be with the girls too. We have our motorhome at a little country campground right on the beach of a no-wake lake so we can ride bikes, swim, play cards and other little activities. Luckily we had the opportunity to switch roles as my wife stayed home most of the girls' younger life and while they still "like" me I figured I'll give it a shot too! When they are teenagers and don't want to be around Daddy so much I can always find another job if that's what it takes. Around here, it seems after 2 kids in daycare it's not worth both parents working just to pay some establishment to raise their kids.

2 pointsNot really radical with flames but a black hood converted to a Linen Biege hood and a black engine to red.
-
2 pointsHere are a couple. I know it sounds silly, but pushing snow with my son's suburban has got me wanting a bigger, heavier horse of my own. Brings back memories of riding a charger v8 with my grandfather. Plus my mom bought the Burban for my son and we lost her in October and I really don't want to tear it up!

2 pointsI got the frame plate mounted tonight and the motor set on , progress is slow but still moving forward
