5 pointsI purchased this wheel horse a year or so ago from the original owner. It had been sitting for years with gas in the tank. Thanks to the wealth of information and input from users on the forum I was able to bring her back to life. It is really satisfying to hear it running strong after almost 50 years.
-
5 pointsJust thought I'd post a picture of the 416-8 at a refueling stop during the 2015 leaf harvest. The leaf vac is the reason I got back into Wheel Horses after twenty years because a riding lawn mower would not handle the load.

4 pointshello men, hope i don't get in trouble with the moderators, but AMC RULES (craig) asked for jeepster with plow pics. so here ya go craig. its a 56 willys cab and front clip on a severely shortened late 70's chevy truck frame. 350 cubic inch engine, NP205 t-case and SM465 tranny. turns on a dime. really pushes snow!!! hope you guys enjoy the pics. thanks to my buddy phil for the help with loading these pics. i forgot to mention the tow boom is a late 1920's early 1930's weaver auto crane. it is the 3 ton model. it is hand cranked and still works great! regards mike in mass.

3 pointsWe had very high winds last week that left this mess for me to clean up. Got the teenagers in on the act with the B-80 helping clean up the yard and burning brush. That's my daughter and her beau. I pulled that limb down out of the old tree with the B-100. Need to sharpen the chain saw now.
-
3 pointsWell, here is the Sovereign ready for winter. I finally got the handle to fit inside the cab. Took a little modification with the mounting bracket, but it works now. Also took a close up of the rubber paddle I put on to improve the performance of the blower. The left side of the cab covers where the rear engine fan is mounted, so it get's HOT!

3 pointsConsidering the fact that you will be painting both sides of the majority of parts and will have numerous small parts I would go for the Gallon, probably a gallon will cost about the same as two and a half quarts and with a gallon you are assured that there won't be any color variation like you could have with multiple quarts.

3 pointsTy, I'm having fun! when I first started tearing down, I remembered, turning wrenches with my Granddad like it was just a day ago, I remember laying in the creeper putting the nuts on the motor bolts while he backed them up from the top! that made it all worth it! Heres another project I've worked on,, not a wheel horse,, or a tractor,, but still a very fun build,, it's a 1941 Chevrolet army truck I don't really work at original,, little changes are fun,, just not to much! The bed is built from scratch , my design, the rear fenders are front peterbuilt fenders, its got a 502 Chevy with a turbo 400,, I take it out every now and then! I also build RC trucks,, since I've retired I just try to find neat things to work on! But the tractor has been special since it has been around for all my past, I used it to pull all my granddads old hot rods around the shops with, mowed a huge yard with it, plowed my mother, and grandmothers gardens with it,, every childhood memory I've got closely ties to this tractor!
-
3 pointsBecause mine was shot and the serial # gone Terry put 'Suburban 400' where the serial # went. I like it. I would be inclined to leave JS's as is or maybe a little polishing. That's a nice original. If you did want the new look with the decal I'd cut a plate to size and just save the original.

2 pointsHello everyone, I've been lurking and reading here for quite some time and finally signed up. I'm probably one of the very few people on the forum that don't own a Wheel Horse (yet) I've been on the hunt for a while and narrowly missed several. The information I've gained on this forum has been very helpful in deciding which model to look for, And for that I thank you all. Allen

2 pointsThis is actually my great niece's birthday cake, but I'm sure some of you will have optional opinions, go for it!

2 pointsIt was excellent talking with you sir. Guys with 857s need to stick together.

2 pointsIn 1979 IH named a new CEO, Archie McCardell, who was determined to improve profit margins and drastically cut ballooning costs. Unprofitable model lines were terminated, and factory production curtailed. By the end of the year, IH profits were at their highest in 10 years, but cash reserves were still too low. Union members became increasingly irate over production cutbacks and other cost-cutting measures. In the spring and summer of 1979, IH began short-term planning for a strike that seemed inevitable. Then on November 1, IH announced figures showing that president and chairman McCardell received a $1.8 million (in 1979 values) bonus. McCardell in turn sought less overtime, work rules, and other changes from the UAW, which led to a strike in November of 1979. Soon after, the economy tanked, and IH faced a financial crisis. The strike lasted approximately six months. When it ended, IH had lost almost $600 million in 1979 value; over $2 billion today By 1981 the company's finances were at their lowest point ever. The strike, accompanied by the economy and internal corporate problems, had placed IH in a hole that had only a slim way out. Things only got worse until 1984, when the bitter end came. International Harvester, following long negotiations, agreed to sell selected assets of its agricultural products division to Tenneco Inc.. on November 26, 1984. Tenneco had a little ole subsidiary called, J.I. Case that manufactured tractors, but lacked the full line of farm implements that IH produced Like combines, cotton pickers, and tillage equipment etc. Following the merger, tractor production at Harvester's Rock Island, Illinois Farmall Works ceased in May 1985. Production of the new CaseIH tractors moved to the J.I. Case Tractor Works in Racine, Wisconsin. Production of IH Axial-Flow combines continued at the East Moline, Illinois combine factory. Harvester's Memphis Works in Memphis, Tennessee was closed and cotton picker production was moved. The truck and engine divisions remained, and in 1986 Harvester changed the corporate name to Navistar International Corporation as Harvester had sold the International Harvester name and the IH symbol to Tenneco Inc. as part of the sale of its agricultural products division. So in the end it was neither CASE or IH that decided on the color, but the owner of the assets, (the wife) Tenneco.

2 pointsAlways glad to see a younger member come on board, wish I had a web site like this to help me when I was your age; heck, I was 50 when the internet came about so I don't guess that would have helped!
-
2 pointsHere's one that's gonna be 60 next year. Depends on how they're treated. It makes a difference "behind the garage or in the garage".
-
2 pointsThe 953 / 1054 are my personal favorites, the GT-14 is also one of the bigger models. Don't know how plentiful is in your area, scarce as hen's teeth in my neck of the woods. If you attend the Wheel Horse Collector's Club show in June up in PA; bring a big empty trailer and you can go home with a collection!
-
2 pointsI like the C series, The 1054 (missed a nice one a few days ago) and any of the larger models. I'd like to have a couple or 6 of 'em.
-
2 pointsI really wish you would quit posting that photo Bob....males me really want to do mine like that
-
2 pointsNASCAR cars always run a lot of right side camber for better high speed cornering.
-
2 pointsIt will steer better with a little camber in it. I wouldn't worry about it unless you're planning on hot rodding it so it will go 50 and then driving it across the country!
-
2 pointsWelcome to the best spot on the world wide web, and great start on your resto. Anything youll need to know, some one here can tell ya. And agree with C101..nice to see young'ens havin' such an interested in WH tractors....your addiction has just begun.

2 pointsAnd hogs...lots and lots of hogs!! What you need is one of these Doug..... It came with my recent 520...I am considering selling it. Better yet I will trade you for that cab and you can sell the the leaf plow. Lots of hogs = lots of bacon, pork chops, ham, sausage and who doesn't love pickled pigs feet and a good hog jowl ??????????? I would love to have that collection system, but there's 3 4 5 reasons I can't right now........... 1. Have not paid credit card bill for new cab. 2. Have not paid credit card bill for new lawn sweeper. 3. Wife.................. 4. Desire to keep on living. 5. Can't run very fast any more........

2 pointsWell, I've managed to do amazingly little in the last few weeks... It's now rainy season, since I media blast and paint outside I've come to a screeching halt in that department so it seems. I did get the wheels painted, rear tires mounted, and have the tractor on it's own weight today to try and figure out what I was going to do for rear tire clearance. I don't want to just raise the fender pan, but do need and inch and a half or so there. It's now mocked up on a 520 frame, I think I will take the 105 frame and rework the rear mounting to lower the transaxle back and down and then re work the tank/seat supports to keep the pan at it's stock height in relation to the rest of the tractor. It's be running a rock shaft and clevis hitch too so I'll have to make adjustments to the top and bottom of the tank/seat support to keep the cable tube and rock shaft in proper relation. Anyhow, I like the stance of the taller tires, and the swept axle looks at home on any black hood.. My garage lighting and my phone both leave a lot to be desired but here goes: Also the 520 steering shaft is a couple inches taller, and oh yeah, it's got a new motor plate. It's resting on the tires just above the jack stands, but there are no nuts on the spindles if you notice one standing out farther, probably from kicking it straight as the tie rods aren't on. Even with the 10.5 wide wheels I have to stay under 8ish lbs to keep the tires looking square.
-
2 pointsThis isn't a apples to apples comparison, those are old raggedy 14 inch tires on a decently wide rim. Let him try that on a new set of tires like a set of 6-12 AGs with a 5 inch rim, bet he couldn't even get the tire on let alone "blow it up". I pay 200.00 plus for a set of rear tires, sometimes 300.00 I would never "blow up" my investment like that. It is unsafe, no matter how many people say otherwise. I see your point though, if you are installing a set of 30 year old US MayPops that you got for free or 5 dollars, why would you spend money having them mounted, well unless you didn't want your face burnt off.
-
2 pointsEverything original. From the paint to the engine all the way down to the Goodyear tires!
-
2 pointssea-duck i would NOT bet my life on this BUT i'm 99% sure that you have a P series short block, NOT a B 43M the P keepers have 3 grooves, the B keepers have 1 groove. if you do need keepers or retainers i will give you some. boomers_influence@yahoo.com thank you. boomer ( the used onan engine parts guy, also NOS and new )

1 pointNo new pictures tonight, but I'm happy to say that a new shorter belt really woke the loader up. I also repaired the broken roll pin in tge PTO linkage & changed the ATF in the loader. Next...wheel weights & fab up a counterweight. I'm leaving the hood off till I install the gear reduction steering since I'll have to pull the engine to swap the lower steering shaft out.

1 pointLead paint disappeared from the auto industry in the 70's replaced by catalized products complete with isocyanated material. Wow , even more danger, So standing 6 feet away from the product may be safer than to a few feet from an HVLP sprayed material . Eye ports are prone to serious danger as is any exposed skin. Dulux enamel seems so tame . Any long term exsposure to any carcinagentic is not a good way to live... or die .quahog

1 pointI seriously doubt that story as factual, but it sounds good. Being in the paint business on both sides of the counter for over 30 years I would find it extremely improbable. Paint is almost never made or stored in that kind of quantity due to aging and storage concerns, that would be close to 18,000 55 gal barrels of paint. When IH sold out to CASE they were already heavily in debt and leveraged, no supplier would have let them, nor would management allowed the stockpiling of that much paint. IH colors were chosen because it was the more dominant brand. It sounds like one of those stories I attribute to Somerset Frisby, he's been dead a long time, but the stories keep coming around.

1 pointi am still not done cleaning up from a major wind storm in July. 19 acres is to much to care for. Very nice looking crew and machinery. Job well done. Nice to have good help.
-
1 pointCarpenter It is getting harder every day to find all original tractors like that. It just shows that some people took pride in what they owned. Enjoy the ride Gary B.
-
1 pointThe preferred spacing is "Two Link" instead of "Four Link". Is that what tirechains.com consider HD versus medium duty? You want "Two Link" chains either price.
