12 pointsSwitched my wheel color from creme to black. I like this look better and am told that black is the right color. Now just to find a set of correct size front wheels.

11 pointsEver notice those threads where someone posts a few pics of something nice that they worked hard on, only to have someone else come along and rain on their parade. You know the type. Let's play top this. Mine is better than yours. Man I hate that. If I ever do that, and I'm not saying I never have, I hope you all will call me on it and I will change my post to be congratulatory. I believe everyone deserves their moment to shine a little when they make things.

4 pointsHere we go again.First leaf pickup of Fall. I have about five acres of oak, maple, poplar, cottonwood and pines that conveniently shed their leaves this time of year. I got the 520 out and checked her over added some grease here and there. Then went and got the Jacobsen 720 sweeper out. Adjusted the chain drive and greased the bearings, little air in the tires and charged the battery. I got this sweeper about 7 years ago now off from ebay.I told the wife that if I had to pick up one more leaf and branches the old way i was going to sell the place. I've had a trac vac and about wore it out over the years and the wife and I would hand rake around the trees. It was so darn much work. So I was clicking through ebay and stumbled upon this sweeper. It sounded good to me and it was something I hadn't seen before. So I'm thinking should I or shouldn't I bid. Oh ya had to have this back and time saver.I emailed the owner. He was the supervisor of the parks department for a small town. He said it worked good and they were just updating it. Well the small town was outside of Green Bay Wisconsin and me living by Saginaw Michigan.450 some miles away. Still I had to have this machine. Well I won the auction and started packing for the trip.Landscape trailer that I had to put new seals in and grease the bearings, fix the lights gas the truck up and away I go. Trip was uneventful except for putting gas in the old Chevy, Any how here are some pictures of the 520 and the sweeper. The machine is amazing and picks up the leaves pine straw good size limbs and twigs. Even picks up a lot of the dreaded acorns. Some of you have seen it before in some earlier posts.

4 pointsI wouldn't repaint it...besides it's only original once in it's life time... the factory applied work clothes it's wearing now actually look to be in pretty good condition. A little TLC applied to that little guy would really go a long way towards making it virtually look like new again.

4 pointsYou can buy lumber for your barn any day of the week. You just have to buy these tractors before someone else gets them.Needing something and wanting something are two completely different things. In the last 3 weeks,I bought a 14 horse Economy Power King with a front end loader and an International Cub Hi-Boy with a 4 foot flail mower.Did I " need "them......nope......I " wanted " them. It's only money and you only live once.

4 pointsGentlemen,in view of recent events of the last couple of days, and because the misunderstanding was figured out and talked about to (I hope) the satisfaction of all here. I went back and got rid of a few posts that had some comments in them that did not need to be in here any longer. I did not delete anyone's posts, I just "hid" them for now. If someone wants to have their post unhid, send me a PM and I will do that. If all is well, I will go back and delete them. Do a "like" on this post if all is well.

4 pointsHere's some pictures from this morning. We got some rain last night and it brought some leaves down. I picked up nine loads yesterday.

4 pointsMy tractors are kept at the family vacation house. They're used sparingly. In the winter it was common to have to jump start one with another half dead horse. Once running if leave the jumpers hooked up and start the other horse. A few years ago I purchased $20 solar battery chargers from northern tool. For each tractor. Haven't had any battery problems since. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

4 pointsWelcome to redsquare and great story! That tractor looks like it has every 1960 bell and whistle that it could have! Have fun with it and it'll be a great way to say hi to dad when you're using it. I have a few things from my grandpa and love to have his stuff in my hands when I'm talking to him. Enjoy

4 pointsDon't expect any monies to be gained from spending money on it. You will likely spend more money than its worth. Don't ever plan on selling unless you get really hungry it as it may have no value to some others than parts on ebay. Restoring or just getting it running would be strictly a labor of love and a tribute to your Dad. Guaranteed to make you think of your Dad when you take it for a ride... Shynon knows. You don't have to know anything about this tractor, there are folks here that do and would be more than willing to help.

3 pointsIt all strated with a wheel horse 520h that i bought in early August .wanted one for a long time and got a nice 1995 with 650 hours, then I found a 1974 c160 and a 1966 lawn ranger for $50.00 for both.that started me on the road of no return.then i found a 1978 c160 for $225.00.that gave me a good parts tractor.and this is my story in pictures. i want to thank all the wheel horse members for all there input and help and parts ,thanks to shuboxlover , TT and all those I forgot about. I could not have done this without your help. Not done totally got to pull rear wheels and paint them. I did change hydraulic lever handle ,I liked the one that the 1978 had so I changed it , 2 new hoses , 1 hub,1 axle 1 1533 bearing ,needle bearings and seals did not replace parking pawl just grinded it smooth . I got my plow on it now and it runs great starts and idles nice. pulls and lifts just like new. I had fun pushing dirt today ,I will put tubes in rears and fill with rv anti freeze , And order all new decals tomorrow .its not a show tractor but it looks really nice. I LIKE IT !! THIS OLD HORSE IS NOT GOING TO THE GLUE FACTORY I want to try to rebuild the 78 which has a good engine and rear axle and the lawn ranger next year if the good LORDS willing. we need to show this younger generation that they can do this , I am 67 years young and I can do this. and the lights I added I made fit the holes so if it ever needs to be put back to original it can be. I don't like to cut or modify a work of art.

3 pointsI love my horses which has caused me to accumulate far too many and now I find a few things that I would like to see to improve my time with my horses. Below are suggestions for devices, solution, or inventions that may benefit me and others. If I had the time I would work on them myself but as you read the posts you see that we have many very clever dudes among us. If we can tap that resource we may be able to come up with some handy things that can assist us in maintaining and enjoying our horses. Someone might even be able to make a few bucks selling them to the rest of us or at least feel good about performing a public service for us. Matt's foot control is an example of a device made just for us that we all appreciate. I propose that this thread be used to suggest things that will help us in that regard. I have 3 areas that I would like to find solutions for. 1. A vented funnel for filling our hydro transmissions. Some remove a bolt some leave the filter off but what I would like to have is a narrow neck funnel that has some kind of a vent tube that goes down into the transmission case to vent air as the oil goes in. Perhaps a length of thin copper tubing along the side of the funnel bent just right at the bottom and the top would work? 2. A quick change battery holder. The garden tractor batteries they make for our horses, for the most part, appear to be pure crap. I tend to buy the $45 420 Amp batteries since they seem to last a bit longer. With all the horses I have, they don't get used often enough to maintain charge over long periods of time and the batteries do not last. Changing a battery requires undoing and redoing the hold down brackets which is not the worst thing in the world but tends to make us buy more batteries than we need to avoid the inconvenience of using one battery and swapping it among the horses. I would rather use the extra time riding my horses. I do use wing nuts to make it easier to connect and reconnect cables. Therefore, what I would like to see is some kind of a battery fixture that allows a quick change snap in snap out procedure for batteries. I would then be able to just have a few good batteries and snap them in and snap them out as I rotate and use my horses. Maybe a quick connect disconnect for the connections and more convenient battery hold down device? 3. Fixture for our ONAN powered tractors to minimize grass accumulation on those huge volume air, and sometimes grass clippings, suckers. We have discussed the issue a number if times and there have been a number of good solutions proposed and illustrated. I would like to be able to buy something that looks like it was made for the job rather than a Rube Goldberg looking device that may even work well. Perhaps an attachment for the deck rather than the tractor? I have used a piece of card board to deflect the clippings from the left side of the deck from being sucked onto the screen but it is an insult to the beauty of the horse. I would like to find devices that one may even sell on eBay or at the next annual show or at all the shows in between. I just thought I would toss those out and see what other things members would like to see or invent. JackC

3 pointsit was free!! I haven't posted in here much lately and I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, so Mods feel free to move this if you need to. My Sister and Brother in Law recently bought a different house and in the deal he acquired a nice John Deere tractor with a vacuum for leaves. So he decided to give me his other tractor which is five years old with 79 hours on the clock. He knows I've been struggling to keep up with the Horses with all the health issues. So yesterday he delivered this to my house.. It's a nice little D110 that will be a grass cutter here along with one of the Horses, either the B60 or B80, whichever we choose to use any given day. The Horses will get more rest with the new helper. No, I'm not converting to the "Dark Side" but it's hard to no to accept something this nice and especially from a class guy like my Brother in Law Bob Weeks, and my wonderful Sister Lois.

3 pointsWhile I agree that JimD's comments bear some reflection I think that you guys may be to hard on yourselves.I lurked around this site for months before I decided you join your group. As someone who looked around and read many of your posts I came to the conclusion that for the most part this is a great site.I found humor,a great wealth of knowledge and very helpful people.I post regularly on some other sites related to mechanical devices and so far have not seen the sniping and petty name calling as I have seen elsewhere.I totally agree that we should reread our comments before posting but from what I have seen here so far I say keep up the good work.We can all disagree without being disagreable.JMHO,Luck,JAinVA

3 pointsI feel left out because I don't have a computer image of a chest X-ray showing the wires that put my sternum back together when I had my two heart valves replaced. They glow like crazy. The valves don't show that much, they are artificial, some sort of high tech material but not carbon fiber. I like to brag about having serial numbers for body parts.

3 pointsI acquired this token of tractor quality this summer. trying to find out info on it. I buy and sell all sorts of junk, I mean historical items. my family has been known to call me the white version of Sanford and Son. anyhow, my deal is I like old things. I buy them learn about them and then find a home for them. I am interested in the history parts of things. well I found this and now I need to know about it. Anyone have any info?
-
3 pointswell this turned out to be a great thing here. I called the other number which I was given, which now I understand why they were stand offish. I was able to contact the owner of Massdam Repair. I talked to him and his wife for over 15 min. they opened their shop in 1968 and closed it down in the early 2001 or 2002 years. he closed when Toro went to the online ordering of parts and tractors. once again taking the human factor out of business cost a company a dealer. He currently has the 1st and last tractor he ever sold. a 69-Raider and a 414(think it is a Toro). anyhow was really neat talking to them and sharing my hat story with them. I am putting a pin on my map of places I would like to see and people to meet.

3 pointsThe machine sure saves the wife and I a lot of time and hard azz work. The trac vac I used to have was a nice machine but just too small for my yard and we still had to pick up sticks before we could trac vac.One season the wife picked up 125 loads with it. I can now pick up about 35/40 loads but that includes sticks, limbs, acorns and squirrels if they get in the way. Bad part is the wife won't run it.LOL I miss burning leaves. Growing up, we burned them every year. Now we're not permitted....bleepin' government. Miss the smoke, smell, sound. One caution though...never try to light a pile of wet leaves with a coffee can of gasoline. It just doesn't work too well and afterwards, you have to rake the area again! WOOF! Your eyebrows do grow back though.

2 pointsHey guys, just wanted to say thanks for all the info. I used diesel and it seemed to work really well. I also jacked up the front and seemed to get much more out of it. It took almost 2 quarts of Lucas 80-90w. Thanks again.

2 pointsHello, I'm new to this site, so hopefully I'm posting this in the right spot. My father past away late last year and left with us, among other things, his favorite Wheel Horse tractor. It stopped working about a decade ago and has been sitting in the shed ever since, but it was always his dream to get it running again. I don't really know much about tractors, but I have to say that it would be really neat to get it working again. As you can see from the photos, it would need a lot of work. My dad wanted to have it as a functioning tractor, so before he passed away he bought a newer engine to mount in it in order to get it working with the hopes of rebuilding the old engine eventually. There's a guy who works on old tractors that we know who said he could install the newer motor (not the one in the picture) and get it functioning with the deck for about $400. He said he could also rebuild the old engine eventually, but finding parts, etc., would take a bit of time. I looked all over the tractor itself, but couldn't find a model or serial number. Judging from the serial number on the engine and doing a Google search, it looks like it could be a 1961 Wheel Horse (maybe??). Here are my main questions: Is this a hopeless project or could this be worth restoring? If it is worth it, should I be getting it sandblasted and repainted first? Does sandblasting and repainting drastically increase/decrease the value (I'm not planning on selling it, but if I were to restore it, it would be nice to do it correctly--just in case one were to sell it eventually)?
-
2 pointsWell no wonder I had so many problems. As I recall, oil was 20 cents a quart and I cheapened out!
-
2 pointsDennis, that thingy on the front is the bracket for the dozer blade. The frames you are thinking of that mounted to the rear axle started with the 701. The piece in the slot hitch was to lift the mower deck. The hitch above it was a factory accessory that was available for the 5003/5010 transmission tractors when the slot hitch was being used for the deck lift. 55 years on Wheel Horses and I just learned that a few months ago. Ain't this a great site? The seat back may be factory but it doesn't look quite right. I'm pretty sure they weren't available in 1960 but shortly afterwards. One of the easy add-ons that can be confused for original if I'm correct on that. Oh yea, the seat itself may be correct or maybe not. Seats with holes, seats without, who knows for sure. It was an often replaced item. You look at the original owners manual and you see the holes so I'd say correct.

2 pointsI have to comment on your battery dilemma though I have no solution to the quick change idea . The average lifespan of the batteries in my toys & garden equipment is somewhere between 6 and 8 years . I religiously use a http://www.batterytender.com/Dion/Battery-Tender-Junior-12V-0-75A.html Battery tender jr . I have these little 2 pole plugs hardwired to all my toys so it's as simple as plug each one in every now & again .
-
2 pointsThanks guys I appreciate it. Well said @WHX5. #redranger the wheel with the tape on it has a date with the sandblaster. All rims came out good except that one. For some reason the paint checkered.
-
2 pointsI miss burning the leaves also. I will throw a few handfuls on the grill in the evening after cooking.
-
2 pointsI think I was about 14? I can still smell the odor of singed hair on my arms and forehead. I can laugh now.

2 pointsI think you'll find items like that are just the typical tchotchkes supplied by local dealerships to advertise their name in your area. Not uncommon at all, you'll still find 'em available in local dealerships to this very day. Agreed, the vintage one's are still pretty cool though.

2 pointsFor #2: I plan on wiring in a golf-cart charging plug to my tractors to make it easy to pull out batteries (then you can just keep one side wired on the battery and swap it around). I would like to see a somewhat reasonably priced locking differential for these 8 speeds. And maybe at the same time it could be made to fit a more standard size bearing...

2 pointsI had similar issue with my recent first WH - a free c105. New Fuel line, filter and new gas and boom...runs like a charm... Take it, get it running, then enjoy the excellent advice of the folks who seem to live on this forum when they aren't driving their WHs or fixing them... Welcome!!!

2 pointsIt runs great. All it really needs is a new seat and knobs for throttle and choke. Maybe new front tires.
