Tired of hooking and unhooking plows and blowers and putting on/removing chains and weights my two primary winter tractors went into the shed today. They will come down in late Nov/Dec for snow season then back to the shed to rest over the summer. The Elctro is really an now an Electro 16, needed more Hp for the blower. The Charger 12 was given to me for free and had sat in a barn for years. Cleaned the carb new spark plug and she ran great. All original except for 2 leaky hydro lines I replaced. (and the 2 stupid duck decals) She came with snow blower, and mower deck with the old style mule drive. In my opinion the 10 pinion rear end in these two horses is the absolute best thing for snow duty. The limited slip lets them really push snow. i have had plows and blowers on everything from an L-107 to a 418A and these old horses beat them all. I know they aren't as pretty as most but they are mechanically sound.. to quote Donald Sutherland from the Dirty Dozen "Very pretty, Colonel, Very pretty, But, can they fight? " These horse can fight snow

Appreciate the information! Thanks much! One additional question. I have a 1067 (10hp Kohler) and SK-486 (16hp Kohler). Both are in great shape (start right up, no leaks, no smoke) with about 1,000 hours each on the original engines. During the summer I run them both about an hour a month. My question, is what is the best way to maintain the engines during the winter? In the past I have run them about 15 minutes a month through the winter. Not sure if this is the best solution.

Well the weather is going to stop me from going but I have had the best day. I got my truck back from getting tranny put in. And took my girl out for dinner played my keno numbers and won 10 grand.

I do not like the electric clutch as engagement is rather harsh, however the motor in her is a KT17 from a JD 317. JD didn't spec ball bearings on the crank and only used sleeve bearings which cannot handle the end loading o a WH manual PTO The wire bundle is to control the electric linear lift that raises the sweeper...wish it was hydraulic as the electric is slow to respond.... The M274 is a Truck Platform, 1/2 ton aka a Mule The M37 is the 3/4 ton w/winch. The M35A2 in the Picture belongs to my neighbor but I am the support maintenance for it

Believe me that was the first dedicated WH i had. Mounting that sweeper was a huge PIA!!!

Gents, Wanted to introduce myself...I started looking for a garden tractor to restore a few years ago and having no background in this area started from a blank slate. Looked at a variety of tractors and had never heard of Wheel Horse. Stumbled onto this forum and have been lurking ever since. I narrowed my search down to a manual transmission Wheel Horse and was searching every CL from South Jersey to Maine. I ended up finding a 1990? 416-8 restored by a local guy and his son. I was planning to restore one myself, but they had done an amazing job and had it for sale on CL. After a few months with no movement, I saved my pennies and ended up picking it up, interestingly, they live only a few miles from me. The work they did was meticulous and the tractor is beautiful. I have been mowing with it now for several months and yesterday picked up a 48" snow plow from a guy an hour away. I'm planning to knock the worst of the rust off and wire wheel the beejezus out of it, repaint it and have it ready for whatever this winter throws at us. Today while mowing, I had my first scare. The tractor was driving fine, and suddenly it refused to shift into either 1 or R. A quick search here turned up the "dog tooth set screw" issue and I had it back to shifting in a few minutes. So, thanks to all of you for a wonderful forum and the reams of information about these machines. I didn't have a very strong tractor bias prior to discovering WH, but now I'm hooked. Pics when I get them.

this is an edit KEEP SCROLLING DOWN / PICS ARE POSTED BY JRBLANKE this is an edit Well after a couple of years keeping my eye open for a locally owned Round Hood, I finally found one today located about a 40 minute drive from home. I'm hoping James can post some pics of this thing for me as Karl and I still cannot figure out what happened when Red Square had a change this past Summer. Anyway, It looks good and runs quite well in my opinion. It has a slot hitch that works! Tomorrow it will get an oil change. It has a starter/generator Kohler engine and the serial number tag on the tractor shows the number #48441 Can someone tell me what this is based on the serial number. Craig AMC rules says its a 701 because it has the double pullys on the engine and starter. I believe Craig is correct on that due to his vast knowledge of Wheel Horses that far surpasses mine. I would like to know what information the serial number is giving me. Thank you. Hopefully I can get some pics of the tractor on here somehow. Oh, and it also came with a snow blade that I will sell if any of you need it.

I met Bowtieguy/Frank today in Springfield and he brought me this C-175 auto its in pretty good shape no knocks or smoke i know the series 1 kt17 can be a time bomb but this one seems good it ran kinda ruff at first but it ended up being pretty much out of gas after that it ran good the steering is stiff but the trans is very strong and the deck works well and i added a metal seat pan i think i might see if my brother wants it so i can get my 314H back.

I suppose that technically this is an improper post. Maybe it will disappear shortly, but maybe not. It is about Toro, but pretty sure not Wheel Horse but maybe still ok. I'm sure that others have seen this but I'm not sure that I have... At least it's not GREEN! Bud! You out there? Another idea for you!

New member here, ricky racer. I just want to thank Scott and family for a really enjoyable day. I don't have a Wheel Horse but my father-in-law had one and used it for years and my neighbor across the street worked at Wheel Horse as a draftsman helping to design implements. He also was entrusted to take home tractors and implements to feild test. Anyway, thank you all for making a guy with green tractors feel welcome today. Rick

Well today was supposed to be a local steam/tractor show and I was going to take the Horse but it's been raining all day and I couldn't bring myself to take this baby out in the rain. I did get it all finished and pulled out the DSLR to get some good finished pics. Her she is! I even cut the front yard with it before the pics. Man is it fun!! Thanks for following along and also for all the members who helped me out with parts and advice. I really appreciate it! It's a tractor that is sentimental to me and the look on my dad's face when he saw the finished product more than made the hours of work worth it...heck what am I saying, this stuff is fun no matter what but it was awesome to see how excited he was about the final product. I'm glad it turned out so well and is ready for another 40 years in the family. Enjoy the pics and let me know what you think!

So that's where all those tractors are that you couldn't squeeze into your shed! Isn't having a lift the only way to go!

Since it so close to home I ventured to Zag's....met up with John (Wallfish) and we wandered around. It was cold, drizzly and a bit windy and of course only a fraction of the vendors showed. I guess I would say those of you that decided to not go, you made the right decision. Mike..........
  31. 2 points
Now that's funny right there!!! Like Mike said, taxes on that can't be more then $20 bucks a year. Heck you (and me) must spend more then that at Dunkin Donuts in a week! The insurance is worth keeping on it just incase something happens. If I were you I would get insurance through Hagerty or one similar. Your regular insurance is going to pay you book value which is nothing. I just checked Hagerty and the average value of a 1971 Dodge Dart is like $7000. A regular insurance company would probably give you like $300 if it was totaled! What the old adage, "an once of prevention" or something like that. Could be "Pay now or pay a whole lot later"

I'll be glad to help with your restoration. I have all the manuals and parts lists for both models. Pics are easy. Good luck!

From my notes gathered from folks who know! Long frames 45.5" Short frames 41.25" Mid Frames 43" 1972 to 1975 Wheel Horse 8 horse powered models had a wheel base of 43 inches "A short frame will have a wheel base of 41-1/4 inches and a long frame has a wheel base of 45-1/2 inches. The 1972 to 1975 Wheel Horse 8 horse powered models had a wheel base of 43 inches but the C-series and 300 series 8 hp models were long frames . Another way to tell is by horse power , any Wheel Horse model with 10 hp or more has a long frame starting from the 1966 model 1056 . In 1969 the last short frame model was built , the Workhorse 700 had a 7 hp horziontal shaft Tecumseh engine and three speed transmission . Any old round hood will be a short frame and all but one six speed model was a long frame (the 1967 model 867 was a short frame)" The first long framed Wheel Horse models came out in 1966. Here is a list of short frame Wheel Horses. 1961 - 701 1962 - 502, 552, 702, Lawn Ranger 1963 - 603, 633, 653, 753, Lawn Ranger 1964 - 604, 654, 704, 754, 854, 1045, Lawn Ranger 1965 - 605, 655, 855, 875, 1075, 1055, Lawn Ranger 1966 - 606, 656, 856, 876, Lawn Ranger 1967 - 607, 657, 857, 867, Lawn Ranger 1968 - Commando 6, Commando 8, '500' SPECIAL, Lawn Ranger 1969 - WORKHORSE 700 Other tractors like the 1974 and 1975 model B-80 were considered a mid frame.

Sometimes the sending unit for a gauge will work exactly opposite than what's needed for the gauge because of what brand it is. I used to work at a Napa and we had a customer that built seaweed sucking machines for all along the great lakes. They always used Stewart Warner gauges and a certain sender part #. Well Napa dropped SW for a while and the substitute for it was VDO. They were installing these senders on the bottom of the tank. They filled the 250 gal diesel tank and then found out that VDO gauge still read empty. They drained the tank (They weren't happy ) and now the gauge went to full. They really wern't happy about getting that smelly sender out of the tank and having to replace it with a totally different sender so they found another place to get SW. As a side note, the shop burn't down one night with a just completed unit inside full of diesel. Place was an 1/8 mile from my house. Night sky looked like the 4th of July!

Hello, FJ_Russo I was having the same issue on a 416H I recently got. I don't know if your D-160 throttle lever is the same set-up as mine but if it is, I may be able to help. On the inside of your dash, behind the throttle lever. Should be some form of bracket there, where the cable is connected into. And your throttle lever is connected into also. I had rivets on the side of the lever. I took a pair of pliers and crimped real hard. Now, my throttle stays wide open. How this helps!

I was thinking the springs would "assist" in lifting the mower Jim. Not totally pick it up. The springs could be added as necessary to make the lifting of the deck manageable same as a snow blower lift assist spring.

I once used a skid-steer loader with pallet forks to dig a drain-line some 60' or so. Put the forks side by side and a little forward tilt and dug the trench about 12" deep from the house to the ditch.

If you prep well, hammer and dolly well, then there is should be little need for filler. Older cars had such thick metal that you could work the metal and file your way back to perfection! It was also so much thicker that the welding distortion was far less! Today's vehicles are so thin that those old techniques don't work well! I doubt that "paintless dent repair" would have worked well back then for many of the dents! Perhaps my first tip about autobody filler is to try not to use any! Or at least as little as possible! I've seen it an inch thick or better! It was never meant for that!

It sure was....and it was rigged to fail by John! First it runs outa gas (way far from base camp!) and then the spark plug walks outa the head!! C-mon, that only happens in the movies....I was framed! Does it have a roof? And wipers! Dang weather! Mike.........

Hi all—well I got the $45.00 K301 carb off the web and after taking 15 minutes to swap it into my magnum 12, Im happy to report it works perfectly at all ranges and with the PTO engaged as well. It comes preset. The mounting boss was an exact match and the throttle cable clipped in no problem. The only thing that does not line up is my choke cable and the carbs choke lever. It seems that my cable wire is thicker in diameter than the hole in the lever and I will have to move the angle of approach for my cable. No big problem. The only thing I would have like to see different is the new carbs mounting boss. It is sloted on both sides where as the old walbro has holes drilled. Just a personal preference of mine. Anyway I hope this helps some other Kohler Magnum 12 owners!! Bring on the snow!!!!!

Steve, As far as how many we have saved who knows.. I have shipped parts all over and Complete transmissions to Massachutes..Texas...North Carolina..New York as well as indiana ohio and Pa... I even had one older fella drive out from New Jersey to my place in North west ohio on a Saturday Morning we re-built his 953 trans he loaded it back up and turn around and drove back to Jersey...The things we do for these little machines is a blast and the people make it fun!!...As far as the 3523 gear that is the biggest problem I have found...for about every 4 I tear down 1 of them gears can be re-used...As they are no longer available new this gear I think is what is going to be the thorn in these transmissions...

This is my 1956RJ #2. It is 100% original except for the rims/tires as they were rotted beyond repair. History on this one is as follows: I purchased it from a guy in upstate NY who did a barn clear out for an 84 year old women. The woman said she and her late husband purchased this tractor for they're daughter when she was a kid (daughter is now in her 60's). The daughter drove it around the yard for a few years and then it was parked in the barn. I figure it sat for close to 50 years! After rebuilding the carb, installing new coil/points/plug and plug wire it fired up and runs very nice. I need to thank Charlie Pitcher for helping with the hard to find parts that I needed. It came with the very rare clinton electric starter option made for pond/clinton motors by Chief Industies in Michigan. It is missing the actual starter and chain but the housing and optional pull start/electric starter recoil is there. If anyone has a starter motor for this machine please contact me @ 203 448-9310. Enjoy pics...
