One weekend towards the end of September there is an event in Rockville, VA called Field Day of the Past. Antique cars, trucks and tractors are displayed. Also demos of old saw mills and construction equipment. There's lots going on the whole weekend including truck and tractor pulls. I take a truck and a few tractors up there-not a bad way to spend a weekend! Here's a few pictures. Not as many Wheel Horses up there this year. Got 'em loaded up My two Wheel Horses enjoying the sun with a few other tractors. The Sears and Allis Chalmers are mine too. There were a couple stray horses there Another toy I took up there Great weekend as always. Hopefully I will have my C120 cleaned up and painted to take up there by next year.

Got me a used airport baggage cart for a yard trailer. It is a flatbed with drop down side rails. 5 feet wide and 10 feet long, not counting the tongue. Pulls nicely.

Looks more like a paper-wasp nest, just as bad if not worse sting than a bee . . . the Bee Sprays will not work on them,you must use the Wasp-Hornet spray, and be careful. There is a guy in our area that will drive 10-20 miles to come and remove them for free, after dark --- he cools the nest down in his special refrigerator, to 33º for a few days, then "milks" the hornets, one-by-one, to remove & collect the chemical from them that really stings, a drop from each, (850 drops = an ounce), which he then sells to a lab that makes antibiotics. Guess there are dozens of illnesses that is good for. "one mans trash is anothers _____". I think it would hard to remove that nest intack.

Good evening, it's nice to be back with the Red Square forum. I had a membership many, many years ago under a similar name and I was active in a yahoo group for some time. I have owned several different Wheel Horse tractors over the years. The last one I owned and sold about 3 years ago was my 1960 Suburban 550. That was the last one to go and I miss it. I was even the proud owner of two signed "Straight from the Horses Mouth" books and I had a Wheel Horse banner flying in my garage for years. After getting out of the collecting end of it, I came upon a need for another riding mower. I always wanted a more modern garden tractor so I was lucky to recently buy a 1987 Wheel Horse 414-8 with the original 14 hp Kohler. The prior owner thought it was a 1984 but after reading a little about this model it didn't start until 1986? It has a 42 inch mower deck and a snow thrower attachment. The engine runs nice and strong and everything is original on it as far as I can tell. I used to be more familiar with some of the older models but I don't know much about the later models. As for me, I'm from MN. I love to fly, I play guitar, love canoeing in the BWCA, I restore vintage woodworking machines, I wrench on old lawn tractors once in awhile and I'm in the middle of a 1976 Goldwing project. I've finally got another horse in the stable and am looking forward to reading, learning and fixing up this great machine. Thanks!!

Hmmmm....Lets see...24x20=480x2=960 sq ft......hmmm...... too small ...can't ya go any bigger!?!?!? Triple the size means more room for tools, lifts & benches so you can have bunches of WH projects going on at the same time...maybe run three phase power in at the same time.....add a 24x 24 lean to on for parts tractor storage??? Hang on to that thought whilst I go design a proper garage and start a thread on it!

Mid 70's I'm thinkin. We're goin fishin when school get's out. If we make it home before to late. we'll go knock the dust off and see for sure year and model. I feel what your sayin about don't cut up a virgin old stock horse.

It needs a new seat but overall it's in good shape for its age. Here was how my Suburban 550 looked when I sold it.

We had this excellent pine tree in the back yard, but it was just growing to big for the space, so we had to have it cut down. So now we have room for a garden again. I put the word out, "looking for a plow", and my buddy, Denny Clark calls me and says he has one and he will bring it to the Lasueur show. Fantastic. Thanks Denny. Time for a restoration. Took it all apart and wire wheeled the heck out of it. Time for paint...primed first...used Rust-o-leum red primer and Regal Red. Put it back together and ordered some stickers from Terry Dennis. Got the decals in a couple of days. I did get to practice "Watching Paint Dry", but the video will be when I get to use it. I was looking at all the pictures of plows on this site, and I did not see one that was exactly like this...and then Koen finds a video on U-Tube that is just like this in action. I think it really is a plow that Wheel Horse, maybe ordered and put their name on it.

I am going to put what ever motor I can find in it for right now , but I still am going to keep looking for a original motor for it , I will find one someday , I have just started the search

The price of the 5xi series on the street is in the 4-digit range everywhere... If it runs, swiftly drive it on to your trailer, strap it down, hand over the cash, and drive quickly away before he realizes there is a 1 or a 2 in front of the $600. Then watch in your rear view mirror for cops... that's grand theft tractor!

My thoughts are to post a picture first and if it's something old, you should sell it and pickup something newer to make a puller. Please don't chop and destroy if it's original.

Nice little 656 you got there. You might find it easier too find a Kohler 6-8 hp yank start for it. Everything about the Kohler will be a little easier, finding the engine, finding parts, starting it, less headaches, ETC. I have had plenty of Tecky's in my day, good ones and or rebuildable ones are out there but like Gary said, you'll be searching. When a Tecky runs nice and proper they can be a nice little engine...

Im ready! I had to run up to Ardin the other day to Peco Vac and get a couple of baggers and the cool crisp air told me it was getting close to show time again! Im hoping the boys soccer games wont interfere, but Im sure I can get them covered. How many that are coming here also go to the Ardin show?

I have owned 2 old wheelhorse tractors for about 20 years now, that were originally owned by my dad and uncle, and I'm finally ready to part with them. I have questions about their value and the best approach to finding the right buyer. I am located in St. Paul, MN Wheelhorse 1: Was owned by my dad, acquired around 1961-2. I think it is a Suburban model, not sure. Engine was replaced with more current Briggs 7hp. steering wheel replaced, head light added, other modifications to go with an electric-start engine that was on it in the 70s. I'm currently trying to get this one fully functional, (I have the mowing deck) but the Briggs has no spark and having trouble getting that fixed. Am I wasting my time on the Briggs? (Will any buyer immediately yank the engine and replace it with an original 4hp Koehler?) I'm thinking this one might be worth around $300 if I get it fully functional and cleaned up...not sure if that is a pipe dream, considering it has so many non-original modifications to it? In the attached pictures, it is the one with the family around it (that picture was taken in 1963) and the one with the blue seat (picture taken 9-21-15) Wheelhorse 2: Was owned by my uncle, I think he bought it brand new around 1959 or 1960? I think it might be an RJ. It is mostly original, but also not running. I hope to get it running also. It has a mower deck as well, and original tires, I have not seen any other wheelhorses of this vintage with those front tires. I'm thinking with this one being more original with a Koehler engine on it, maybe it is worth more than the other one, though I'm not sure on that, and it probably depends on me getting it operational. In the pictures below it is one the man (my uncle) riding it and looking at the camera, with the silver fish on the cabin behind it. (I think the picture was taken in August, 1960.) Otherwise, I'm just interested in hearing opinions on what I should do to maximize their value and make them visible to whoever would want them the most....also wondering what I can hope to get for them.

That yellow thing has got to go. Looks too much like something from that other brand. It needs to be black. However from a safety point of view, the yellow does stand out more and OSHA would love it.

Almost finished. Got to add some temporary side and front racks, until I can weld well enough to make permanent racks. I am sore now, I could never be a mechanic, bending over for hours kills my back

Too late to help this time, but if you run into a need to drill out a hardened steel set screw just take a torch to it, heat it to red hot and once it cools you can drill it.

My crank measured 010 under so I'm gussing it has had a rebuild at some time? My balance gears are going in........in the bin!

Was a bit concerned at first how the demolition would go but it turned out just fine, I didn't get stung once. People ive shown have been saying they were mud bees. My neighbor mentioned calling in someone but time was an issue here as my neighbors fence guys couldn't work with it right there and im expanding my garage starting tomorrow and didn't want to deal with anyone getting stung. I went in with a shovel and lifted the seat which split the nest right in half and boy did they come pouring out. Never got to aggressive fortunately and about an hour later I pulled the tractor out into the middle of the yard. Her fence guys went right back to work with the bees flying around but they didn't get bothered. Theres a few still flying around the area 18 hours later and they are clear that the is not their home anymore. Good thing I had no intentions of reusing that seat

Just wanted to ad that I looked over the grounds and the large ground wire that comes off the "alternator" (at least thats what it says on it) was barely hanging on. I took it off and got new lugs then re-installed. I ran the mower and cut both the front and back yard a couple days ago and its been sitting since. I grabbed my multi-meter this morning before work and put it on the battery and it read 12.54 volts. Im not sure how much the mower drains the battery running for a half hour but Im hoping its fixed now!?

I am hoping to get it Thursday or Friday by truck delivery. I am hoping it goes well in the swap and I can cut grass again and use my old snow blower attachment from my old C-120.

Oh the joy Tom oh the joy.... not quite as fun as your project, I didn't snap off any hooby doos ...yet All in all still alot less expensive & frustrating to work on than chrome horses tho... Gonna have about 500 clams in this girl time Its said & done, shovelhead project has about 6000 clams in it so far and a looong way from done. Great idea but by the time Id spend finding a place that does it I'd be further off getting Michigan Jake's.

I run 23x8.50-12 Bkt tires on my b-80 and i have 23x10.50-12 deestones on my c 125. I prefer the bkt over the deestones. I seem to have great luck with the bkts. I used the deestones for a one bottom plow filled with rv antifreeze and they worked pretty good. Filling the tires helps a ton.

Hard to beat the cool factor of a little red round hood... running a set of dual ags in the rear. If you ultimately do decide to go the dualie route... I'm pretty sure, you'll be making your's...the happiest kid on the block.

I do have some more "vintage" footage of the old tractor owned by my dad. I just uploaded a video from a home movie, taken with regular 8mm film, probably in 1964. For comparison, Left to right, Firestone, Carlisle, and Deestone all in 23-10.50x12 In fairness, the firestones are on a 10.5 wheel, the carlisles are on an 8.5, and the deestones are on a 7.5, which is plenty wide for them.

This is my "down & dirty" D-160 work horse. Used almost exclusively for pulling yard trailer and dragging logs etc. I have some hilly areas and before ags with turfs I was constantly spinning/slipping/getting stuck. I was simply blown away at the difference in traction after ags! They are 15"s so cant comment as to brands on 14s.

Also look at the Carlisle Tru-Powers. I went with them due to what I'd read about sizing being nominal with Deestone, etc. and people winding up with smaller tires than expected. Also, all Carlisle tires I've had last forever. Here are two pictures, one new before the spring mowing season and one from a few days ago when I test-fit the new 2-link chains for traction this winter. They've made a world of difference already when leveling the packed gravel driveway with the dozer blade and given me some extra traction mowing. They don't tear up the yard unless I start to spin tires, which is a lot harder to do with the extra traction. The V61s up front really help with the steering as well.

While on vacation we came across this Cicada bug. I told my wife if she grabs it, it will scream just like a woman's scream. LOL I didn't think she would fall for it but she has no problem with bugs, snakes, animals ect. She decided to try it and took this video with her phone. I would use it and keep an eye on leakage by the seals...maybe drain out and replace the oil in the spring. Glad that worked for you.

Download the Kohler engine service manual. EVERYTHING you need to know is in it. Download 2 copies. One for the "library" and the other for the garage.
