5 pointsI thought I would share this for anyone looking to build a hitch for towing their trailers around the house. I searched on the forum for ideas for a hitch and saw some nicely built one but finally came up with a design of my own, fabricated it, mounted it and it works great. It's bolted to the axles as most others but decided to go an extra step and add support braces. I attached them to the original hitch retaining pin to relieve some stress on the axle tubes and for additional support and strength for moving my 7X14 around the house.

4 pointsNice truck! You can't beat the sound of an old inline 6. I have a 292 with a 194 head, rv cam, offenhauser 4 barrel intake with holley carb, split exhaust manifold and a 700r4 paired up with 3.90 rear end gears in my 3/4 ton 52 pickup. Scoots right along. I also swapped disc front brakes into mine for more stopping power. I've had nothing but problems with that vendor...from missed deadlines to wrong parts sent out. Was an overall bad experience.

4 pointsWell thought I should probably give an update on this one, its been a while! Motor and trans are pretty much completely assembled. I sent another batch of parts into get zinc plated so when i get them back they will be completely done. Also finished up the belt guard and heat shield, and picked up a NOS steering gear from bill jenkins at the show. I'm planning to make a new tie rod and then will have the steering issues worked out. Got the frame blasted and any rust pits filled, also cut off the foot bar and am going to weld a new one on. As far as the hood I didn't want to damage it blasting it because it was in pretty nice shape so I built an electrolysis tank, this is my second attempt at one of these, first one didn't work at all and this one kind of worked. It eventually did take off what needed to be removed but I spent an hr with a putty knife scraping the paint off and it was in the tank for almost 10 days. Hoping I can figure out why my tank isn't working right so if you have any advice I'd be glad to hear it. I used a 55 gallon drum, 6 anodes all wired together with 8 gauge wire, used a 12 amp charger and used the 1/2 cup to 5 gallons of washing soda as I have read. I will beadblast the hood carefully in my cabinet now that the paint is gone and it should clean up nicely. So as far as whats left on this tractor I just need to get a back set of tires and find a good steering wheel for it, finish up the frame and hood stand, and the hood. Hoping to get it done for scotts meet and greet but not going to rush it. wheel painted engine mostly together guard, shield and my new steering gear frame ready for the foot bar to be welded on hood after being in the e tank my e tank setup bought a new set of 3 ribs for it a couple of weeks ago and trans all finished up

4 pointsSo... Purchasing the first truck didn't work out. CT. doesn't require a title on vehicles 25 yrs or older but you do you need a past registration to prove continuity of ownership.. Come to find out the owner never registered the truck in the ten yrs he has owned it. He just used a repair plate when he used it and so did the guy before him so that leaves me with zip for paperwork. No thanks, I don't feel like dealing with the nightmares at the DMV.. Now, I just need to try and get my 500 dollar deposit back. Meanwhile, a truck popped up on Craigslist yesterday afternoon and it was really the type of truck I wanted to begin with. Something heavy duty that can haul a bed full of firewood when needed. So what was I to do? Well, I had to go check it out which meant playin hooky today. Oddly it was only 3 miles away from the blue truck. Long story short, I bought this 1970 C30 Long Horn. Its a one owner truck with only 86,000 original miles on it. The owner had his own roofing company and this truck was NEVER left outside over night and it was NEVER driven in the snow. He was the only person to drive it as well. It has ZERO rust on it and I mean ZERO which is amazing for a CT. truck. It has a 350 with a 4 speed with granny gear. It runs and rides real nice. I have all of the original paper work and owners manual. The purchase price new was almost 3800 bucks. The guy really liked this truck and took great care of it, After very little hand polishing today I can tell that the paint will shine real nice on this old girl. What does it need? Well, the whole going over but I do know it has a bad wheel cylinder in the rear, the muffler has a hole in it and it will need a new set of tires soon. When I got off the exit for my house I happened to notice a green Dodge behind me. It followed me right to my driveway. I'm thinkin WTF did I cut this guy off or something? He gets out of his truck and walks up to me and asks... you wanna sell that Long Horn? Nope! I'm sure everyone will like the last pic best!

3 pointsMaking a fully hydraulic snow/dirt blade for my C-195, got the ram mounted on the blade and the frame work, just need to plum it into the second port of the controls. would post pics, but I guess I'am maxed out on pic space? should get the plumbing finished tomorrow.

3 pointsMike, yes the clutch is a workout, my left leg is going to be bigger than the right! Tonight I buffed out one side of the truck, its lookin good. I've never seen a Long Horn either. I read somewhere that in 1970 they only made 700 or so C30 Long Horns... Tomorrow night I'll buff the other side and then Saturday I'll pull the rear axles to check the brakes and do the wheel cylinders.

3 pointsThats awesome! My dad bought the opposite end of the spectrum as far as that style is concerned, 1972 GMC Jimmy same color. Flame Red i think it was called. This is a really old pic of it as it is almost completely restored (showable driver, not trailer queen) now. Very fun to drive with the top down! I love that granny gear. We've pulled some really serious stuff putting it in granny gear, 4wd Low. I think you redline at about 7mph...

3 pointsI'm certainly not an RJ-35 expert, but they look correct to me. 4.00 x 8 were the right wheels, although the rims were normally painted black, not linen beige. In fact they are exactly the same as my 1958 RJ-58. Except your front wheels are on backwards, I believe. The valve stems should be facing inward. 2 pointsI'm sure this isn't new to everybody, but since I hadn't come across it before I thought I would post it. I saw this Wheel Horse plow on Craigslist and it made me curious because it didn't look like any I had seen before. Model ID shows it as a 07-10IP01 "Garden Implement System". Too bad it's just the plow and not all the other parts of it.

2 pointsThat ugly cart is awesome. A friend of mine had a green one like that for sale at our local steam show. He wanted 60 bucks for it and I offered $25. He said he had that much in 1 tire. Yeah right, He pulled it out of the dump. He aint foolin me! He ended up loading it back in his truck! They are nice to haul goodies in so you don't bang up your nice cart!

Some are 1800 RPM You will need to buy a pulley the same size as your PTO pulley for a 3600 RPM unit or twice the size for an 1800 RPM unit.

2 pointsYou want a story? Ok Once upon a time there were 3 bears. No wait a minute! I saw this tractor on CL. Decent price. He said it was a 13 HP Which didn't make sense. Crappy pic with snow on the ground. Coutn't even tell if it was a stick or hydro. Called and left message. Older Guy calls me back just as I'm leaving work Monday. 15 miles away so I go look at it. Ad said mint condition but it had sat under a cover for quite some time. The hood is stained and it's into the paint. Deck has 2 small holes that he didn't see untill I got there. Also came with an older snowblade. I beat him up some and we strike a deal in the nice sunshine iI do not have ramps or the room in my truck for it so I have to come back the next day with the trailer. Tues comes and I'm driving into a severe thunderstorm. I see lightning bolts like in the B.C. Comics ZOT!!!!!! I get there just as the rain lets up enough to not drown pay him and take off the deck as the next wave hits. So I'm allready wet so load up and go! it's a 93 314-8 but it wasn't sold until 98. It has 306 hrs. On it and man was it dirty from sitting in a dirt drivway under that cover. I don't know what my plan will be. I need to clean it up and go through it. I'm more of an old school 60's and 70's WH guy. If it was a hydro with an 1100 I'd definetly keep it but somthing has to go either this or Ezra. At least my cab will fit this tractor like it should Got it's first bath tonight. I think it will need a couple more. I get another pic soon. Now how's that for a story? Is anyone asleep?

2 pointsNo Rick, side load really isn't a factor. If a generator is designed to be belt driven it will be fine. I kinda side tracked you by discussing converting a direct drive to a belt drive. The wonderful thing about running one off the PTO is no motor to maintain. Most generators sit idle 99% of the time. If you make it a monthly routine to run them they will be fine but few folks do that. No worries about direction. They can operate in either direction.

2 pointsWhat about leaving the gen head connected to the engine block but removing ALL the unnecessary parts of the engine and using a pulley on the flywheel side of the crank to drive it? I might be a redneck!

2 pointsTo add to Racinbob's comments, The belt driven units have bearings for the side load of the belt powering it. Units that are coupled directly to the engine probably can't handle that side load or at least do it for very long. BUT, you could add a shaft which is supported by bearings to use one. It would be a bit more work to do it but the generator heads are much more common and therefore, probably cheaper. Harbor Freight was selling a 10,000 watt pulley driven gen head fairly cheap. You wouldn't be able to use the full capacity of it with a 14hp engine but how often will you need 10,000 watts of power all at the same time. Still, a 14hp should handle close to 7000 which is usually enough to run a whole house. A little internet research on the subject will give you a good idea of what and what not to do if you decide to make one yourself

2 pointshere are some pictures of my 502 with the deck on. hopefully they help! please disregard the torn belt and lack of alignment on the top pulley, I've been working on tightening up the engagement arm and will adjust pulleys when I get another belt.

I remember the booming RV market for this style truck at that time. http://www.longhorntrucks.freeservers.com/index.html Ford had it's version as well but really extended the wheelbase that placed the rear axle close to the tailgate. I seem to recall that they sold the whole package of camper and truck.

2 pointsNot for nothing...I like the Chevy truck better. Hope it works out for you this time. CT DMV laws are strange. I don't have the title to my Camaro, but it's registered thru continuity though. Some lady there messed up the VIN # that I'm slowly working on correcting. Might be a PITA down the road, but for now, I just keep on cruising.

2 pointsBefore you do what Ed suggested, see if you can get it started and running again normally. If it runs OK for a while and then starts to die, try to open your gas cap a little (quickly, before it stalls) and see if it stays running. If it does, you may simply have a clogged fuel cap vent.

2 pointsto be continued...ppplayoffs...don't talk about pplayoffs. I want Notre Dame in this. I think it will separate the men from the boys. But just the Big Ten and Notre Dame...after that...it becomes too much to post and keep up with. Having Notre Dame in there, will keep us watching the rest of the teams when it gets down into conference play. I like that. I am going to LaSueur next week...so unless all hell breaks loose about this...Notre Dame is going to be one of the teams we pick this year. Make up our minds by this Saturday...I would like to post the 1st games like this Sunday or Monday...if you don't like it...file a complaint with Brrly1...he will have a process that you have to go through to get your complaint heard...(what did he say Ethel!!!!)...he said Brrly1 would give you a fair hearing and rule on his dissension in good time...sometime before Iowa looses it's 5th game this year....could be October. OMG...it's going to be a fun season. BIG TEN + ND = ????

I didn't like the green so changed it to black always wanted to do that to one and figured this one whould look good black. Just have to get #'s on it and a new drive belt , speaking of what # is the belt/size?

1 pointBummer. Before I sold the C-125, I put a mounting bracket on this shell and it went right on without the funny front thing. It looked identical to the 42" rear discharge that came with the C, except for the front mount. The drive belt looked like it would even have a clear path to the tensioner/idler pulley from the mule drive. Everything seemed to line up. Looks like I will be packaging it with my next load to the parts broker guy.

1 pointThat's exactly why I at least wanted to use the tractor engine, I don't want another engine taking up space that I need to be worried about maintenance for. But now you have me thinking about fabricating a platform near the PTO, and going direct. maybe even using the PTO clutch by modifying it for when I want to hook up the generator. (Just brainstorming though, my imagination. . .)

1 pointI agree with the adage that you get what you pay for.With that said ,as a journeyman machinist with over thirty years in the trade,I don't own any Starrett tools.It depends on what you need and what you want to spend.If you buy an inexpensive set of micrometers that come with standards you can check a mike at both ends of it's range.If you are a careful casual user I doubt that paying for the Starrett name is necessary.You might want to look at what companies like Travers Tool have to offer.They offer you a choice of name brand USA made tools and inexpensive imports.Unless you are building HiPo racing engines you probably don't need a micrometer that costs $150.00.I try to buy American made tools when I can but my first mike was Mitutoyo 1" which lasted me over twenty years making parts for NASA.JMHO,Luck,JAinVA

They don't have to be restored.....we welcome any condition and any brand. The more the merrier! FYI for everyone...............talked to the local farmer yesterday and we may just have a field to plow in across the street. The beans are progressing nicely and he is thinking if all goes as planned that they will be off by the time of the show. More plow time!!!!!!!
