9 pointsFriday I had my seven week check-up following spinal surgery and the doctor told me (in the presence of my wife) that I should be able to start doing anything that I normally did prior to the operation. Sooooo, this morning I got a couple hours of quality seat time mowing the lawn. Came back in the house singing " Back in the saddle again", the wife said I don't sing as well as Gene Autry but she was glad to see me so happy. I start Physical Therapy Monday and should be able to get back out in the barn to give the rest of the herd a little attention very soon.

6 pointsWow, that is good news. It's been 11 months since my wife had L-1,2,3,and4 fused and she is still not allowed to vacuum or do any laundry. She was allowed to drive and shop after two months though. Maybe I should talk to her doctor.

5 pointsI'm not much of a picture taker but managed to get a few. Turned out to be a nice day over there with quite a variety of machines.

4 pointsThis is a story of Hannah Please Vote For Her any vote from you guys goes a long way..... This is for my friends friend Hannah. 4 years ago Hannah was giving only months to live. Today she is a happy and fairly healthy 15 year old. Hannah had a brain tumor at age 11, after visiting 6 hospitals in three weeks only one surgeon would touch her, this was at John Hopkins. It was a long slow recovery and she is doing great now. She loves horses and loves jumping, the love of horses has kept her spirits up the last few years. Even thought she doesn't have all of her motor skills back yet she is a very good rider and jumper If you have a few minutes please see the link below and vote for her, she is in the second photo down Thanks Guys! ~Duke http://eventingnation.com/who-jumped-it-best-millbrook-junior-training-edition/

3 pointsHere are some pictures for you, this one is a late 55, but the same tractor besides the frame. If you need any more let me know. Also that steering link should be straight besides the bends on the ends, but one end is bent at a different angle than the other so it lines up with the steering shaft block. drive system....you can see the brass disk on the engine pulley, when you pull the speed selector arm all the way back it pulls the veri drive pulley onto the brass disk which reverses the direction of the belt. rear hitch you are missing, there are 2 different style hitches they used, this is the earlier style. Both are correct for your tractor I've seen both used. The steering wheel it should have, you can also see the throttle control below it and correct gas tank, however these straps aren't original but work just fine

2 pointsCraig, Doc didn't mention vacuuming so I won't do it, can't be too careful! As for driving and shopping, since I haven't been on pain killers and it never came up following the operation I have been doing both for a few weeks.

2 pointsOK...this post may get a little involved. These transmissions do not usually pop out of 1st gear. Yes, if the transmission is on there that came with that horse, it is a Wheel Horse #5053. That means that it is a 3 speed uni-drive with a 4 pinion differential and 1" axles. Before you end up dropping the tranny, we want to check out the shifter. Does it seem sloppy?? You may want to pull it out and check that the whole bottom of the shifter is OK. It will have a ball at the end of the shaft that engages and moves the shift forks into positions. Also, the dog point set screw that engages the shifter ball has to be locked into the hole in the shift ball...snug but not tight. Check this thread... http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/topic/16582-help-my-shift-lever-pulled-out/ If the above does not fix your issue, you are going to have to open the trans. OK...now I am guessing here...kind of. .. What could cause this from the inside... 1. a worn cluster shaft gear...especially on the top end where 1st gear engages 2. a worn fork gear that engages both 1st and reverse...this is possible because the top part of the fork gear engages 1st and if the bottom part of that fork gear is OK...it will not pop out of reverse. 3. a bad bearing on the top (1st gear end...left side of trans) of the fork gear shaft that would put enough slack in the shaft to let the gear pop out. 4. It is possible that you may have a bad bearing on the left hand side of the cluster gear shaft, but I doubt it would just affect the 1st gear. The rest of the transmission...ie...differential, mushroom gear would not cause that issue you have. They are OK. Do you hear any noises...grindings...howls...etc?? Anything new happening that was not there 2 weeks ago?? If not, my guess is that it is the shifter being sloppy and not engaging the gear all the way. However, if you are using 1st gear all the time and then going into reverse with out coming to a complete stop (check the manual) you may have been grinding the edges of the cluster gear, and the respecting fork gear though the years, and you need a better one at this point. Do the outside observations first...only you know how you have been using...or abusing this horse. It is fixable...let us know.

2 pointsLot's more pics. Tried to get a lot of Ford feature pics in. Also a short video riding along on Skonk. Probably the coolest thing I came across was a steam tractor built in the village I grew up in. Built in 1914 and is the only known working unit left. Also an old drag line was operating and the guy working it let a little boy in the cab and let him work the controls. IH M with Mopar 318 power Ford with flames and Chevy Power!! Mini steamer Steamer built in the village I grew up in Drag line with little boy at the controls Mini Mercedes Need light? Shiney! Trip on Skonk HIGH NOON!! 2 pointsIronically, I have bought and sold off Craigslist many times...from vehicles to boats, tires, and hammocks. Never once have I experienced anything "weird" as a buyer, rather it is usually someone who clearly doesn't have the same level of OCD that I have. For the most part, everything has been as promised and spot on. As a seller, however, I have seen it all. Quick example is when I tried to list a 1988 Ford Ranger XLT super cab 4x4 for $600. The truck was a two owner, had some typical rust over the rear wheel wells, but ran and drove extremely well...$600. Long story short, I got trade offers that I could hardly believe. One local guy...get this...offered me three chickens and a porta potti for this vehicle. I politely declined and told him that I really enjoy the chicken that Kroger and Costco sell, and that I live in KY and we received indoor plumbing and shoes like two months ago. Sigh...this world is something else.

1 pointOn the list today for my possible acquisition was a decent little 312-A, and a latecomer--a C-141. Both of these were posted on Craigslist. I will try to keep this brief. Maybe all this was caused by the recent blue moon... I went to look at the 312-A that was supposed to be a "come and get it--I don't want it" transaction (gas to get there, and a minor amount of sweat loading everything). I get there, go through my process of assessing the Horse, do a test drive, and check all functionality. Everything was good, the hours were at a so-so 1150--but it's a Kohler Magnum 12 and I wasn't too concerned. No leaks, no smoke, no problem. I had pre-arranged the deal over the phone and the owner was glad to have me pick it up... so I thought. Suddenly the price went from "can't you load it any faster?" to $400. It had but one attachment, the tiny 37" rear discharge deck. I drove 3 1/2 hours to get to that one. I left without it. Here's where it gets really strange>>> On the way back home I stopped to see a C-141 that popped up on CL late last night. It was equipped with a snowblower, a 42" rear discharge deck and a 48" side discharge deck, extra set of AG tires mounted on rims, chains, weights, and about three of every necessary belt as a spare. I called this morning and pre-arranged a time and a price--only if everything was as advertised. We agreed to $300, and my adrenaline was pumping. I think that's a steal for a clean and working C series--especially one with lots of extra horsey stuff. So I get there and wait for 45 minutes for the owner to come out of his house (he was home, he knew I was there). Pretty creepy. During that time, I gave it the usual inspection. At about the 30 minute mark, and after knocking on every door I could find and pressing every doorbell button... I couldn't take it. He had verbally given me the OK to test things out as much as I wanted (per our phone conversation). So... I pulled the choke and put it at mid-throttle and cranked it up. It started a little hard--but it started--and purred. There were 2 immediately obvious issues: the motor was loose on its mounts (or broken mounts) and the drive belt and pulley were shot and whipping erratically and causing the drive clutch to jitter. The owner actually had to bungee the drive clutch release in the operating position because the shaking was violent enough to pop the clutch release. The oil was new and fresh, and the trans fluid was clean with a new tranny filter. But--the whole bottom half of the engine block, mounts, frame, and snowblower lift arm were covered in black oily sludge. It did not leave a good impression. It looked like he NEVER wiped up anything in the 25+ years he says he's owned it. He never came out of his house. I had a trailer and cash, and was willing to deal with the issues because they are all repairable. $300 for a C-141... I thought is was worth the price of admission. I knocked, dinged, and called him one last time and then drove away. Super creepy... I got about a mile away from his house, and he called my cell phone. The conversation went something like this... "Hey, are you the guy with the red truck?...Yes...Well, you just left my house...Yes, I know, I was there for 45 minutes and despite all my efforts to contact you, you never came out of your house..." Then it took a very unexpected turn. The next thing he actually said to me was, "You have some kind of balls to show up at someone's house and start his tractor and drive it around his yard... some kind of balls, buddy!" Umm, I was literally speechless. This guy knew everything about our arranged meeting and what I intended to do once I arrived to check out the tractor. He knew I was there, but completely avoided me. So, I left... what else could I do? I won't get into the rest of the ensuing conversation, but let's just say... I politely declined... ...And drove like a bat out of hell away from Wheel Horse Deliverance. Two nice finds, zero horsies on the trailer... crazy people everywhere! And a weird guy ("It puts the lotion on the skin" kind of weird) who couldn't come out of his house to take a handful of cash. I hope the next horse finding expedition turns out much better. WOW!

1 pointI didn't think this topic would have such staying power. I have a new one to share. I call this Craigslist Nightmare II... So, last night I see a brand new post on CL. It was less than an hour old. It was for a sweet little C-125 Automatic, very clean, low hours. I did not hesitate to contact the seller immediately. The post had the dreaded "no text / no email" request, so I called and left a message. This morning, there still was no reply, so I called again... no reply... I called at lunchtime... no reply... I called at 2pm and 5pm... nothing. I don't get this, and it has happened to me several times. If you leave specific instructions to CALL, then ANSWER your damn phone, or at least respond to any messages regarding the sale of your item. WOW. I have a trailer, I have cash, you have a tractor to sell... what is the problem? I just checked CL. The post is still up, nobody has bought the tractor. And if you sold it, take down the post instead of just ignoring every call coming it. C'MON... I'm jumping up and down with cash in my hand----------> it's like trying to buy something from a brick wall. This seems to happen a lot on CL. At least this weekend I didn't have to deal with a seller that couldn't answer his door because he was in a straightjacket.

1 pointI know...I learn something every day. Sometimes it makes me mad to do that. I'd like to think that maybe, just maybe, I could get though one day in my life without learning something...but then I would learn that I got through one day without learning something. Dang it. This is an "original...the world according to Stevasaurus" quote.

1 pointSort of related. I have one of those Thermos Grill to Go convertible grills for sale. It's on CL and I have it out front of my house with a sign on it. A guy stops today and doesn't even come to the door. He and his daughter proceed to take the grill apart without even asking if it was ok. They wanted to see how it folded up. I had a window A/C unit out front a couple of years ago. Big For Sale sign on it. I heard a car pull up. By the time I got outside they had it in their trunk and were driving away. They even took the sign!

1 pointHere's another video from last year's steam show. Some great rare iron and even a dog on the plow at the end!
-
1 pointAbsolutely correct, and disproving the theory that you need to "polarize" a regulator. What happens on the second attempt is the battery current "sparks" thru the now connected field coil and polarizes the iron field shoes inside the generator into correctly aligned magnets, allowing the armature to cut thru the magnetic field and generate charge current. And as Squonk says, that s just the beginning of his problems.
-
1 pointHe needs to change out that battery, replace those cables and get that "The Prince of Darkness" regulator out of there. He knows how to get the spark out because he probably has to do it almost every time the tractor gets used.

1 pointHere's the tall chute I picked up from member jmdavid09 couple three weeks ago , didn't think it was going to happen because of the distance between us... but as luck would have it he was coming down from NY to pick up a tractor and we were able to get it done . We met in Pottstown and I was able top get a tall chute . Just finished up tonight, thought after 20 years of service I'd go over it and I put a little more money in it - new chain - new idler sprockets etc - if I see stuff wore after it's been in service for years I'd rather replace things now over January with 2 foot of snow in the D-way . The 10ft bulk #40 chain was a piece of cake and tightened things up nicely First pic is the day it made it's trip from Syracuse to South central Pa via Pottstown Pa .

1 pointHello. So today i thought i would share a few bits and pieces. So i had put my bonnet on to take pictures for you all. i don't do this often and i don't keep the bonnet on as i need to take off the Honda air box and air intake bits and pieces if i want the bonnet on and then put it back when i want to run it so my progress will be little until my parts arrive which should be the 10th to the 20th (they are coming from america). i also have a few option regarding my fuel tank, mounting places etc and what tank to use. so its all good progress and i'm nearly there just a few bits to work out first and waiting for bits. i am on holiday from the 15th to the 22nd so hopefully it comes before then, but obviously i wont be able to do any work while i'm away. But i think it looks very nice with the bonnet on and i'm excited to get it more complete. For reference the rocker cover does not stick out the bonnet its nice and set back just the pictures make it look like it. (In these pictures there was no fuel tank attached aswel) James

1 pointI had heard a rumor that Michigan was trying to move to the MAC Conference. The thought behind it was to not see such an upsidedown score each time they lost. Not sure how true that is, but it sure is funny.

1 pointI had a sad beginning to my Saturday. My buddy, Oke' a 12-1/2 year old Alaskan Malamute, has been listless for the past few weeks which I thought was because of my broken ankle but with a change of food he seemed to back to his old self. This morning my wife took him for his morning walk and Oke' decided to cut it short. While we were eating breakfast he suddenly stood up and let out a cry, then collapsed to the carpet. We rushed him to an emergency veterinary clinic where we found out that he had a cancerous tumor in his spleen that had ruptured, and that he was bleeding internally. Even with treatment the prognosis was to only live for three months. So I made the hard decision to put him down right then. My last photo to share from just three days ago! Little did I know. He had had his afternoon walk and was waiting for his treat. He would jump and pounce into this position like a young dog. "Miss ya, buddy!"

1 pointSo sorry to hear of your loss John. Its amazing the bond we build with our pets, they are like family! I've had many dogs thru the yrs. and loved every one of them. This was my Cocker that I named Archie..The two of us were as close as you could get,, he went everywhere with me. He loved riding in my truck, he would just sit there as happy as can be enjoying every minute.. He is the only dog I ever had that every single person in my neighborhood knew his name and everyone loved him. Many a little kid tugged on his big floppy ears and he never even thought of biting anyone. I could spend hrs. working in my garage and he'd lay on the garage floor just hanging out. I got him from a shelter when he was 2 yrs. old. He lived to be 17 yrs. old. Archie died about 15 yrs. ago., I'll always miss him...

1 pointIf you substitute the name Kolher or Briggs or Kawasaki for Tecumseh, your post sounds identical to 90% of the other posts in the engine category, Troubleshoot the symptoms, and ignore the pissing and moaning regarding what name is on the engine.
