I recently got a new job at the local metal recycling yard. In two weeks time I was able to save a few Wheel Horse implements. One tiller one snow plow and two single stage snowblower. All of these were headed to the sherreder but I caught it just in time. These findings lead me two my next find a 416 8 with electric lift. Going tomorrow night to pick up the tractor I will get pics of it tomorrow but here are the implements

I think Wheel Horse used up a lot of older parts found on the shelf over the years. Sometimes I feel that Johnny Cash could have based his song on Wheel Horses instead of Caddys. I knew a JP back in those days that worked at the Wheel Horse factory and could have built many, many tractors from all the new parts in his garage, most of which came to be just like Johnny said. We also don't know what has been swapped out over the years. Nobody cared back in the 60's and 70's. When I helped my Dad on his newly purchases 400 I did more harm than good but when he bought the new 704 I was getting old enough to accomplish some constructive things and we were already accumulating quite a few parts and pieces from various years. Who's to say what was original and what wasn't? I wish I could get one of those Dorito time machines and go back to the 60's but retain the knowledge of the collect-ability decades later. In any case Jim, I think you latched on to one of the nicest I've seen there's definitely a great story to go with it. That survivor choke/throttle plate is as nice as you'll find. There's a lot to love about that little tractor.

Hey I'm new to this forum. I just inherited a 63 wheelhorse 753. I'm wondering what are some specs on it and what attachments can i put on. I'm looking more for a plow and or mower deck. Will other year mower decks fit or are there specific decks i need for the 753.

I just drilled a hole in the filter plate to adjust and use a plug when done adjusting. Still have to take the cover off but not the whole thing

Also be sure to check the latch on the trailer tongue for play and make sure it latches solidly on the ball. I lost a boat and trailer on a freeway, safety chains snapped and the boat/trailer passed me. Luckily there was no one in front of me and everyone behind me looked like a restart at the Daytona race. I managed to get back in front of it and try to slow it down until what was left of the trailer jack caught a groove in the road and it made a sharp right turn, went all the way back across three lanes and down an embankment. Believe it or not, the trailer and boat both survived. The only casualty was the wheel on the trailer jack. I drove about 20 miles an hour back to the shop after I got to it and hooked it back up. Found out the inside of the trailer tongue was worn out and the latch was bent. also someone else had hooked up the trailer to the truck for me to use.I always check and recheck the latching system now on any trailer I tow. I don't take anyone's word for it anymore. They won't be the ones responsible if something goes wrong. I'm glad to hear no one was hurt and you guys made it home ok.

Well went to see Dennys502 in MN while on vacation last week and picked up this 400 he was giving away. Story has it this came from VA after the owner was injured on a WH (not this one) and he told Toro he didn't want it. Toro legal possibly had it shipped back to MN where Denny worked for Toro and legal asked him if he wanted it. He planned to do somewthing with it but since he is now retired and too busy...lol... He wanted another member to maybe have a crack at it so here we are. Still awfully nice for him to give it away and i promised that if I can't do anything with it I would pass it along to someone else here. We believe it to be an early 60's hence the Clinton motor and seat with out holes. More pictures of it and a different thread once I get going on it.

Hi Everyone, I am the WHCC Newsletter, and I need your help, you all have seen the pictures from the big show, and you all have such wonderful stories to tell, I want to be able to share these stories with other enthusiasts. If you are not a member of the club, I would encourage you to become a member. They are working hard to help collectors and other enthusiasts out with the big show, I found parts there this year that I have been looking for over a year. Please if you would like to submit an article to the newsletter please let me know, the club and especially the Newsletter would not be without all the amazing members that are out there. In case you are a member but did not make it to the meeting, I am trying something new for the next newsletter, I will be working to send out the Newsletter via email to those that want it that way. It will be in color, and although I will still be limited to the size (depending on how many decide to get their Newslett via email) it will be in color. Please help me out, I know there have got to be some great stories about your time at the show, so here is your chance to let everyone know. If you need help writing it, I can help...I just need the jist of it and some pictures. Please help me out and dont make me beg!!! Karen Thackeray kthack657

A guy in the South end of Lansing had over 150 garden tractors in-and-around his house, mostly hidden by trees and shrubs, probably 6 old Wheel Horses in there, he did let me walk around and look, but he was "collecting tractors" and didn't want to sell any (about 1993). He did do a few crude modifications but not even minor restorations on any. Got most of them for free or very minor cost. After many warnings, City of Lansing came in and hauled everyone of them that were outside away (junk yard?) and added $1200 to his taxes that year. He now moved to within 1/2 mile of me (2006), probably is up to 75 garden tractors, most are in an old pole barn, I can come and look when he is home, but to just look, he worn't sell anything or even trade parts off of them, I asked if I could take pictures, he said no. He has to have help when he goes to get new ones, doesn't even mow his own yard, just collects the tractors to look at I guess, they are all 600' off the road and can't be seen. Actually he is a very nice guy, about mid-70's, not highly knowledgeable about them, but he just likes them, any brand, and I think he actually enjoys it when I come over to look at them (he's up to 8 Wheel Horses now). "Go Figure . . . it makes him happy'. Glen

maybe you guy's could get together and organize a work party to help him clean up the other junk around in exchange for a deal on some horses so the town don't end up the the tractors. just an idea eric j

This is a nice little steam show with beautiful grounds and a nice little flea market. I won't be able to make it this year. They get a fairly good variety GT turnout, but their focus really is their steamers. I was surprised at how many guys just showed up to take their tractor through the parade and then never saw them again all day. Seemed to me the Wheel Horse guys were the only ones who hung out for conversation all day.

I imagine you could remove the clips... and use a small dab of silicone, evenly spaced, 3,6,9&12 o'clock around the cap. Once dried, should hold it in place. Especially, a show tractor, that sees limited use.

Very nice find, and can't beat the price! Also agree on a early 60 400 going by the early belt guard, solid seat pan, and the clinton engine. I would say leave it as is, just clean it up well fix mechanical stuff and paint the rims, they are pretty hard to find in this condition.

I'll tell you something about motor homes. I worked in an RV dealer 25 yrs. ago and spent a week at the Winnebago plant. When the chassis come in it's chop and hang where ever and how ever. The frames were comprimised and I saw a few scary hitch arrangements on the rear of a lot of RV's. I'm not saying they are built like that now. but the extra long, short wheel base ones would have a lot of stress towing anything.

Thats a very nice collection of Wheel Horses from a time when life was much simpler and less stressful.

Ok. Here are the pictures I took last night at 11:00pm. It's dusty and dirty in the pictures. I gave it a quick wash today and it looks even better. This weekend I'll give it a full cleaning and detailing, change the oil and filter, fuel filter, and spark plug.

John Fisher and I live about twenty minutes apart and for the past ten years or so have conveyed together to the Big Show. It gives you peace of mind knowing that if you have mechanical problems there is help nearby and a couple of times there were problems. This year the trip was uneventful if you don't mind driving the four and a half hour trip home in a driving rain. After we split up a few miles from home John had a near tragedy. As he turned on a back road about three miles from home, his trailer jack drug on the road. He thought that he had forgot to raise it when we pulled out so he pulled over to check. What he found was scary. The whole receiver had broken loose from his motorhome and was hanging down. The rear metal plates when the receiver was welded to the motorhome chassis had rotted away. The front ones were holding, barely. The part that was hanging down was also where the safety chains attach so if the front plates failed the trailer with five 'Horses on it would have come loose and been a runaway missile. The consequences could have been deadly, at the least the trailer and 'Horses would have been wrecked. Lesson learned? Get under your tow vehicle and check the welds, condition of the metal, etc. Basically the structural integrity of the receiver especially if you tow a boat trailer and/ or live near the seashore. John was lucky, you might not be.

When I designed my new barn I made sure this was included. I may end up going with a second shelf....

You can remove the clips and buy the u-shaped door edge guard at your local auto parts store. Cut pieces and apply to hub cap. The newer rims have a concaved lip for the bead lock and the door edge snaps snugly into that grove.

Holy Red Sky at Night, Bat Man...I am getting pumped for this show. I am already loaded (with horse). I think we will need a camp fire...the mosquitoes by me...if they were red, are the size of a WH Suburban.

All C175s came with a series 1. Conveniently, the engine series switched when they went to the 417. Only if its been replaced would it possibly be a series 2. @scotty If you were anywhere within a reasonable distance of me I would be all over that C-175 with a series 2. Shipping puts it too expensive. Sometimes the blackhoods dont sell so fast but i love them.

I wrap rubberized electrical tape around the cap. It has two sided sticky rubber and protects the painted wheel. It works for me!!!

Jim, come talk to me at Portage this weekend. There's no hidden info in the serial number, they just built them sequentially. 1960 Suburban 400 began production at #21900 somewhere around Aug-Oct 1959.

Come on now Randy. Ya gotta post pictures. I'll never say that rattle cans are the best way to go but I know first hand that beautiful results can be achieved, even to the point where an auto body man didn't believe me that it was done that way. It's really just another way to move the paint from the container to the target. Now.....if I could just figure out how to get hardener in that rattle can

I hear ya Dave, trust me...this thing is waaaaaaay too much fun... I forgot I took the wheelie bar off it to fly the RWB flag off the back today... then caught myself burping the throttle, and picking the front wheels off the ground. Trust me, it's definitely a handful. I could easily see "someone" getting into trouble on this beast. For anyone not familiar with this ... this is the link to Charlie's original build video... http://s393.photobucket.com/user/desertkart340/media/wheel horse/CF8B96F5-2CA8-474E-AEE6-2D37992D8361-2846-0000030FD639EAB1.mp4.html

I am of the opinion that we should have all of Vin's videos on the RJ 35 consolidated in a section like the "Instructionals" so they could be used for reference without having to search all over for them.

I have a theory. You buy a parts tractor, and after getting it home and looking at it with one of your favorite beverages for a while...you decide that the old girl does not look that bad and would not take too much to fix it up. So then you start looking for parts for the parts tractor. Two 520's are better then one. Go buy it.
