2 pointsI bought this Wheel Horse tractor late last summer. The po was in the process of converting it into a puller by mounting John Deere round fenders and seat, 26-12-12 tires, and a foot throttle accelerator on it. The engine was also replaced. I know the model number is 1-0110 which is on the steering column tag. That tells me this tractor was originally a 1972 Commando 800. Apparently the hood was previously repainted and the wrong decals for a Commando 8 were put on it. I also know the Commando 800 was only made in 1972. Does anyone here at RedSquare know how many Commando 800's were manufactured in 1972 and if this model is somewhat rare since it was only manufactured for one year? The reason I ask is that I already bought replacement Commando 800 foot rests and seat pan from RS member funengineer. I'm now thinking it might be easier for me to restore this tractor back into a stock 1972 Commando 800 rather than continue down the puller track (no pun intended). So, I am looking for your opinions... what do y'all think???

2 pointsMy money is on a bad or poorly grounded condenser. Since it idles fine with no blowback thru the carb, a burnt valve is unlikely. Also make sure the coil is wired correctly. ..points wire to negative post.

2 pointsHere is what im talking about. Im not talking about parting out machines that are too far gone. there are many good parts on the d 180 i could show you a ton more tractors like the 520h being parted out and most body parts are easley fixed by sanding and re painting i just cant see parting out good tractors for fenders and hoods i realize they buy them and can do what they want but at the rate they are junking these there will not be any left for future collectors From the same seller.

2 pointsThanks for the information. I've seen the rebuild videos from stevasaurus. Without them, I probably wouldn't have even attempted to do this myself.

1 pointFound this in my local cl ad,the guy said it belonged to his parent and had been in his barn 30+ year so I bought it with out hesitation. I gave the guy $600 all complete but missing frame mounts.
-
1 pointPut it back together and run it like you intend to work it. You haven't run it long enough to seat the rings. I never take it easy on a rebuild. Put it together and start working it.

1 pointWhy don't you just go ahead and pull the head off and look at the valves? A new $8.00 head gasket and a half hour of your time will answer your burnt valve question.

1 pointI got it all out just have to get packaged up it a bit odded shape and want to make it fit in a small box to keeping shipping costs down for Frank I was going to give him a call this weekend

1 pointHello all! Haven't been very active on the forum lately. This chemotherapy is a pretty mean deal. It didn't start out too bad, but it gradually has made me feel a little bit worse with every treatment. Good news is, I only have one more treatment left! I take my last one Tuesday. From what I can tell, and feel, I think it is shrinking the tumor somewhat. Will find out for sure in a few weeks, and then, hopefully, it'll be time for surgery. Can't wait to start feeling better. I have a garage full of horses that "need a fixin'"! Lol. Will try to get on more often for updates. Thanks again for all the prayers and well wishes! Firpo....

1 pointI'm excited about the find. I drove through Westby about 4-5 month ago and saw the 520 next to a repair shop. I didn't think much about it. 2 days ago I drove through again. I didn't stop. But on my way back I decided to check it out. The guy at the repair shop said it was his brothers. Said he wanted $750.00. I told him to relay the message that I would give him $500.00 the rest is history! I probably will sell the two stage snow thrower and cab.

1 pointsuper nice 953 good find, those front tires on that 1045 are worth getting the tractor hard tires to find I'm sure you would not have any trouble selling those if you wanted too..

1 pointIt skipped a few ticks Steve. They've lost 12 times in the first round including 4 of the last 6 with some good teams. I think Muffet Mcgraw needs to give them dancing lessons.

1 pointI just took the seat out of the box , boy that really look like it would be comfortable. I just wish there wasn't 4' feet of snow on the lawn.

1 pointThe rust is a non-issue. Just wire wheel it clean and put a little Lucas Oil on it. Input shaft looks like it is OK...need the 2nd/3rd fork gear though. Send a PM to "Racinfool40" first. Jake Kuhn may have one...after that we really have to ask around. Mentone swap is coming up in a few weeks...I can keep an eye open for you if we do not find on by then.

1 pointYou'd need to check the diagram for your exact model but I believe the 312 operates as you mentioned. The engine shuts off when you leave the seat with the PTO engaged. On that model it uses a normally closed contact held open when sitting on the seat. It runs from a PTO switch that closes with the PTO engaged. PTO switch closed, seat switch closes when you leave the seat and the circuit is then complete and it grounds out the ignition.

1 pointI still feel badly about that BUT I am also glad I wasn't IN the wagon when it was hit. My head doesn't need any more jarring...

1 pointI need a hood for an 1964 854. It has holes in it and lets assume that its rusted beyond repair (i.e. welding, putty, etc. wont work). How do I replace that if someone doesn't sell me a used one that's not rusted out already? I agree that its sad to see so many quick fix machines being parted out sometimes, but it is not economical to reproduce every part. My hood for example, was stamped out on a very large die that may or may not still exist, but the man-hours to recreate that by hand would cost 3-5 TIMES what the whole tractor is worth. (If I am wrong, please get me a price quote!) Another example is the infamous 1533 bearing. People have been trying to find a replacement for that for years. Bearing manufacturers wont even answer your emails if your production run is under 10-50,000 units. At probably $10-20 a piece wholesale, who has that kind of money to invest in a long-shot? TORO does, and even they have stopped making it... If not for the guys on here pulling them out of good transmissions we would have none (or they would be selling on eBay for $200 each because of the low supply and high demand), and the chances of that bearing being totally shot on a beat-to-death tractor are probably greater than 60%. Like i said, sad to see some go, but I am personally very glad that I have a source to buy good parts from. (Now their resale pricing, is another story... I think from some parts dealers its far too high. But supply and demand and all that yadda yadda )

1 pointita a tough call, when you arnt able to wrench on her it could be more expensive then the tractor is worth, these sundstrands are nice when they work, but can cost an arm and a leg when not,i have a c160 that has the Sundstrand and I had to have it professionally rebuilt,it cost me near 500 to have it completely rebuilt,ya more than the tractor is worth, but now I have a good pump and I know it will be good for many years, but I took it apart and reinstalled it to keep the cost low, heres a pic of the inside of the pump,i trid to fix but it was too far for me and I needed parts so I ended up getting a rebuild from a guy who repairs large equipment

1 point...and it's for sale. I'll post it in the classifieds later. Here's the full picture. The real reason I bought it was to get this:
-
1 pointI think the answer depends on what you use the machine to do. The tri ribs cited by Pete are great (as I have read) in the snow (and maybe dirt) to keep the tractor going where you want it. They may not be so good as a turf tire. If all you do is cut grass, a 2 ply turf tire will do fine. If you put a loader on it, you will need a 4 or 6 ply front tires. If you snow plow or snow blow, the tri tibs or Vredestein multi rib tires are a good choice. No one tire fits all chores, that is why many of us have more than one tractor. Just my opinion as well.
-
1 pointHey Al, the snow finally melted on the north side of my house, so I gave the Commando 8 a chance to pull the roller up the steepest part of my lawn. The 8HP thumper in second gear really sounded happy pulling the roller up the slope. On the flat part it was third gear at idle.
