Got...maybe 6" of the slick, dry, powdery stuff here overnight... definitely was a far cry from the Armageddon forecasters were predicting(not complaining)... did the drive and side with the blower, early this morning...wasn't pretty, but did make it happen though. Just connected the dots to the shed out back, chose my plow this time, and went much better.

A friend brought this by yesterday. From what I have read on Red Square the first 500 Special had a H60 recoil start. This one has a HH60 with recoil and electric start. Looks to be fairly complete with the original seat. The cushion is torn, but you can still see the wheel horse logo. Thought some of you might like pictures. I'm more into the bigger HP tractors so I will sell or trade this one.

It's been a while since I added to the WH side of the collection, but today I aquired a pretty nice 603. It has a few minor issues here and there, but with a little elbow grease and some attention I think it's going to be a pretty nice little rig. The original Techy runs quite well - even though I'm not a fan. The steering wheel is super mint.

Well here in central Ohio we only got a mere 5 inches of the white stuff! Bummer for my snow plow rig, a 1974 A90 Special! I fired it up anyways and let it fly. The county snow plow didn't even bother to go down my road so I did part of my road and my one neighbor did part of the road too with his new fangled Cub Cadet tractor. Then I did my driveway and my neighbor ladies driveway too just for fun. It took about 2 hours to do all of this. This is the first time I got to use my snow plow this winter! So far we haven't got much snow this year, not like most of you guys are getting!

Off topic but looking at your avatar brings back memories. Many years ago I was privileged to have this beautiful creature.

Just in case you wondered, everyone in northern Wisconsin and the Upper penninsula of Michigan is laughing their asses off right now. A two foot drop of snow is not historic, does not shut down the city for three days, and does not require the National Guard. It is called Tuesday, and it happens all the time!

Like the one I have, that I cant get done. Lol BUT,,,,,,,,,,and I am no expert. The motor "should be" a recoil start, period. Did not read anywhere of a electric start. The rumor says that MANY DEALERS changed engines to make the tractor more desireable and marketable. Its still sweet, and once done a beauty. All the above, my humble comments. A great tractor. Glenn

Hard to measure what we ended up with because of all the drifting but I have about 14"-20" of new snow here. My small town has two pickups and two dump-trucks for snow removal.....we now have two pickups and ONE dump-truck!! Saw this about an hour ago (sorry, cheapie cell phone pic thru my truck window) The driver was out and talking to another driver so I'm thinking no injuries. Its only on its side so maybe it could be pulled back over and get back to work ?? Mike.............

And if the tranny drive pulley is OK, check the axle keys.
  13. 2 points
Sounds like the woodruff key on the transmission drive pulley has come out or sheared. Jack the back end up so the wheels are off the ground, start the engine. The pulley on the transmission should be turning, and the input shaft that it is mounted on should be turning with the pulley. If it is not, pull the pulley off and inspect the key.

Depends what you like Brrly. Our show will have a lot that the Big Show doesn't from what I've heard. We will have 100's of acres to play on and will actually be able to use them. There will be fields surrounding the main show area set apart for mowing, plowing, tilling, etc. If anyone wants to use any equipment we will have a place for it. I can't wait to see all the horses at work. There's more but that's enough spoilers for today...

Is this going to be the pre-show to the Big Show?? Shall we say warm up!!

I was cruising the back allies of my small home town today and spotted a Wheel horse from a long ways away! I went around the corner and down the next ally and found this oldie buried under some snow! It looked like a Bolens at first with all the snow on it. But after closer inspection I see it is a WH. I talked to the owner and he said he just got it last week with the big Farmall tractor that is next to it. I asked if it was for sale and he said sure. I looked it over and he said it was a 654. It has a 654 drive belt guard on it but after I checked it out further, I could tell it was a 1961 Model #701, one of my favorites! It has the wrong hood and is missing the seat and spring and the double starter generator belt guard is missing too. No big deal since I have one on the shelf. All else looks good including the Kohler motor is loose and intact. He said for me to make him an offer so I said $75.00 and he said no, but he would take $150.00 for it. I said I would go that high on it. I got his phone number and said I would get it next week or next weekend. He said he had some more WH's in the barn, a Raider 12, a Lawn Ranger, a 654 and a very nice old 1958 WH! I said I would like to see the 1958 Horse but he said these weren't for sale. I asked if I bought the other one, if I could see the 1958 tractor and he said yes. So I will get back to him later to get the 701 and see the oldie in the barn. I was hoping it was older than 1958 and maybe I would try to buy it anyways! I will keep ya all posted on this deal!

Here are a few from my neighborhood and around the house. The first two are of the neighborhood's pet doe when it was a fawn last year. It wandered up to me while I was working on a cart. It still is very tolerant of humans. Long story of it being separated from its mother and then adopted by a neighbor after being shunned by the rest of the herd. It had it's own fawn this year. The neighbor has a dog collar on it to prevent being culled. Another neighbor has a farmette with two horse and five goats. Its not uncommon to find the horses broken free. Oke', my dog, was wondering about those "big deer!" The other shots are just some of the local critters. It's interesting living where I am. Rarely a day goes by without taking some type of picture.

My winter projects are coming along nicely. I wanted to get everything done last fall because it was such a tuff winter last year, and I did. So my winter projects are...sleep late in the mornings, go ice fishing when the temp is in the 20's, light the fire place and watch as much football & basketball as I can, eat a lot of comfort food. I can report that the time line is looking good for a successful winter this year.

Plowed snow again today...It never ceases to amaze me how much these lil tractors do. The 18 Auto is down again...yeah I know...Imagine that...lol.... So Jebs Lil Charger 12 as he calls it has been pulling plow duty with its 42" blade. Heres a vid or 2 of it working and one from 6 months ago of it working at something a bit different around the farm.....

On the last photo....Remove the square headed bolt. If there are 2, remove both of them. The "key" in the 2nd to last photo has to be in the keyway in the axle a little bit. See if you can line up the bolt hole on the backside to the key on the front side. This will line the key-way up, and you should be able to lightly tap the outer end of the key back down and into the keyway in the hub. Pull the hub off and inspect for any damage other than the outer edge of the hub being rounded out a little. Probably be best to use a new key when you put it back together. Your 1st photo of the hub & axle are what both sides should look like.

I just finished plowing my (+ 2 neighbors/friends) driveways with the newly rebuilt transmission. The c-101 is strong!!! Other improvements: Installed solid aluminum motor mounts. I took one of the designs - posted on this site by one of our UK brothers - to a machine shop. Rebuilt/installed brake system. Installed new tie rods. Dipped and rebuilt carb - spark plugs - oil - fuel lines - full lube. Installed new battery. Repaired tire chains - ordered the Terragrip rubber chains.

That's 'bout what we got, five inches of the white junqué! Since we picked up the Work Horse late summer/fall haven't tried a plow job other than push a little gravel. The Work Horse didn't have any problem. Our first Briggs '83 Horse, we like Kohler! Somewhat pleased we added the Dial-A-Height too! The Onan 520-8 took a breather while son pushed the snow.

Well Geno, go for it. I did exactly the same thing you are planning. Back in the late 80's early 90's I was buying all the WH I could find and there is a lot of them out there. One day I looked around and had a 40x65 building full a 24x36 building full a 30x42 building full and a 24x48 building full. I came to a quick conclusion that I will NEVER get all these tractors running let alone restored. Had over 200. So in 2008 had a auction sold all but 10 that I hand picked to keep. Now I am back to 46. But I can work on them at my pace. I only buy certain models now not everything out there.

I agree with all the advice given. Been painting cars, bikes, dump Trucks etc. For 40 yrs. Without Getting all technical primer is made To bond to a substrate. It also is Made to allow the topcoat to bond To it. If you were going to"flip" a Piece of equipment, you could de- Grease and shoot it. It would look Good, for about six months. If you A going to the trouble of stripping To bare metal you are cheating yourself in the long run. Primer for Sure. Sent from my SCH-S720C using Tapatalk 2

I'm hiding. We're busy switching the business over to mostly Wheel Horse this month and making a lot of changes. Our official business name change is looking like it will be close to Feb 1. We've bought and sold quite a bit and adding something new this coming weekend. We have a goal for every month this year and a 3 year plan to make this thing big, so big I can't even believe it myself. Started in Jan, Feb is finish a part of the shop into a full parts fabrication section month, start getting a product list together for our store, getting all the details out for our 1st annual Spring show, and get ready for March when we will start buying like we never have before. We have already made a place for tractor inside storage at the farm that will hold over 500 more Horses. This is what we've decided we're doing the rest of our lives so it is full steam ahead.

On my restorations and re-do's I always use a primer. I have been using the Rustoleum "rusty metal" primer (it is the brownish color stuff) since I don't get all of the panels down to bare metal. It is a thicker primer and you need a bit more patience spraying it or it will run. I have tried the automotive "grey" primer for bare metal but the results have not been as good for me. I think Fireman has given some good tips on painting. I need to check into this "self etching primer" he has suggested. BTW, for severely rusted small metal parts, I have been immersing them in vinegar for 48 hours. It's cheap and environmentally pretty safe. However, the surface is so reactive after coming out of the vinegar that it will rust right before your eyes. Drop them into a bucket of baking soda and water to neutralize the vinegar. Dry them off (I have been using a blow dryer) and then prime.

The short answer is yes. You should always prime before you paint especially bare metal. You also want to wipe the parts down with wax and grease remover before priming. I generally use the Rust-oleum self etching primer on bare metal. Seems like a lot or work to do but it will give you the best results. If your going for a professional looking restoration then take the entire tractor apart piece by piece. Completely strip each piece down to bare metal. Wipe clean with wax and grease remover and prime immediately with self etching primer. Don't wait as moisture will start corrosion right away and eventually cause problems later. Allow the part to dry for at least 24 to 48 hours before top coating. On sheet metal parts like the hood and fenders make sure you remove any dents and use filler to fix any imperfections after you prime and before you paint. Once thats done wet sand with like 400 then 800 then 1200 grit sand paper. It will give you a really nice professional looking finish when it's done. After your top coat is dry for like a week you can wet sand that with like 2000 grit for a super nice finish (stay away from corner and edges when wet sanding!). Just my $.02

I'd love to find one of those light-weight little loaders for doing mulch duty around the place. That is a nice find. You just don't see to many of the old Danco loaders. It does look similar to this WH400 loader. These are some Jacktown show pictures that I think Buzz posted several years ago.
