I've been wanting to include a 520-H stallion in my herd since seeing some run at the WHCC Show this year. So, I took a 150 total mileage road trip today and picked up this 1990 520-H from "Shallowwatersailor" John. This particular tractor was previously owned by "Cable" as well. So, we're kinda keeping it in the RedSquare community... just moved it from MD to PA. This is my 11th Wheel Horse that I have adopted since acquiring my dad's original 1962 Wheel Horse from my uncle for free just over three years ago. Five of my "horse" purchases have come from local C-list posts. I have acquired five of them from some of the nicest Wheel Horse folks here on RedSquare. So, thanks to guys like "Shallowwatersailor", "buckrancher", "fireman", Big Jake", and "Jdog_kustoms" for giving me the opportunity to grow my collection of various Wheel Horse tractors.

Went on a little road trip to the southern part of the state today to pick this one up... Kind of a wierd story behind it all. A little over a year ago I was at the Kent CT tractor show with one of my RJ35's. I got to talking with a guy who said he had a RJ "with the belts" and "sitting in my barn"... I get these kind of stories all the time... so of couse I had to ask if it was for sale... answer: No. So we talk a little bit longer and I wright my name and number down and asked if he changes him mind to give me a call... 9 times out of 10 I never hear back... But this time would be different. Last Monday I get a call from the guy saying he and I met at a tractor show over a year ago.... and he was ready to sell his RJ35. At first I had no memory of the original encounter and had no idea what he was talking about, LOL! It wasn't after about 5 or 10 minutes talking with him that I started putting it all together... long story longer we set to meet today and what does he pull out of the "barn"? A sheet metal frame 1956 RJ35 with a "no-name" hood and original iron steering wheel... Now don't get me wrong it's got issues but nothing I haven't fix in the past or cannot machine an original part for... And it came with a plow and the original belt guard! I will be uploading a vid to my youtube channel tonight of this little RJ, so we can get up close and personal, LOL!

That looks like the makings of a thoroughbred horse. If it were me, I would pull the engine and remove all the tins for cleaning. Pull the intake and exhaust manifolds, to do a valve adjustment. Most likely behind those tins is a lot of oil, mixed with dirt and debris. Onan recommends this be done every 500 hours. Cooling is critical to these engines especially the rear cylinder. You do not have to completely remove the engine although if you can that is the best. You can simply slide it forward a bit and then turn in on the frame. You will have to unhook the 9 pin connector from the engine to the tractor wiring and the fuel line and carb hookups. Easy and won't take long.

Most of you here don't know that I do woodworking on the side. I have shipped pieces all over the world - and have a nice collection of woodworking tools. However some are used more than others. Anytime I need to do a Hole bigger than 3" but smaller than 6" I have to use a Circle Cutter that goes into the drill Press. Its basically a center bit, and a adjustable Arm with a Dagger Knife on the end. The center bit keeps it located as the Knife swings around and cuts through the wood in a Circle. Almost like a Power Chisel. Well .. this is such a rarely used tool, I forgot one time, about the knife that swings around. My left hand was inside the arc and while I did get it back from where it was, I wasn't totally clear of the knife. It cut my Middle finger from the First Knuckle, up the side, over the big knuckle, moved the tendon, exposed the bone, and up into the top of my hand before I could get it out of the machine. When I first pulled it back I didn't realize the damage that had been done. Headed to the house, Rinsed the blood off, saw bone, and in a panic, wrapped my shirt around my hand, jumped in my pickup (Its a Manual Shift btw) and DROVE MYSELF to the hospital that's 9 miles away. When I walked in, the lady working the desk told me to have a seat and wait that they were a bit busy. I untangled my shirt from my hand and all the could see was blood...I was IMMEDIATELY given a room. haha They Did a Xray to make sure that I Didn't fracture anything, and while waiting for the tech I was running my right index finger up/down the exposed bone (i mean really how many times in our life can we touch our own bones while they are still IN place?). She told me that if I didn't stop she was gonna get sick...haha I really don't recall the number of stitches it took but I think it was around 20 ... he did a very good job of sewing. Three years later, the scar is smaller. I still have almost no feeling on the top of my hand, have limited strength to it, and haven't been able to hold a pinstriping brush, or my airbrush (i'm left handed) since ... Though I plan to start learning again. I also Drop things a lot with that hand ... gets frustrating sometimes. Moral of the story? LOOK BEFORE YOU FLIP THE SWITCH! You're digits might thank you later!

Tom, one of the owners of Boyden & Perron of Amherst, MA, the Master Toro/Wheel Horse dealer who sold me my 1998 314-8 Wheel Horse Garden Tractor came out in the middle of a snow storm, at night, after a full day of work,the night before Thanksgiving to fix my tractor when it broke down after 30 feet of snow blowing. Turns out, when I got out of the cab, I kicked the gear shift which caused the safety switch to turn off the engine - as expected. I'm a big guy and new to the more compact nature of the WH controls and the confines of a snow cab. Apparently, when that happened, the magnetic part on the gear shift broke off. I'm new to wheel horse and had no idea and since I only had the tractor for just shy of 24 hours and I was standing in the dark in the snow with now way to get my car up the driveway (it's a Honda and doesn't like steep grades and snow - both describing my driveway), I gave them a call figuring he could walk me through some stuff on the phone. He did but none of it helped, so to my surprise he came out. Unfortunately, when he got to my house, because it was dark and snowing and the mailbox is in between my driveway and my neighbors and a bit confusing, he chose the wrong driveway and being even steeper than mine and not plowed, he slid off into a ditch. He than walked over to my house to get my tractor working again (we jumped out the gear shift switch) and then he called a co-worker to get him home. Unfortunately, he had driveways to plow with that tuck and couldn't get it out until Thanksgiving. Some time on Thanksgiving morning, when he came to get his truck out, he delivered my tractors bagger tube that got left behind when he delivered the tractor. I felt SOOOOO bad for Tom but that just speaks volumes about the level of service you get from Boyden & Perron! I can't recommend them enough! Here's a video of the poor guy testing out the tractor to make sure all was ok (and probably to kill time waiting to be picked up).

Congrats Steve! Thanks for doing this pool. It's been fun, certainly a lot more fun than watching the Irish the last half of the season. I'm looking forward to the bowl game pool. Ya know sumthin? I think I actually won this thing. Have you seen Jims menu? Should we share with the dudes upstairs Jim?

OH...one more bragging rights issue I have to deal with.....wait for it!!! Illinois is going Bowling...Michigan gets to be at home watching the game. Watch out for those cigar store Indians... Who would have thought that???

Sorry to you guys that picked Northwestern to win and then I come in and picked them. I think for next year im going to get one of those Magic Eight Balls and try my luck that way. Congrats to the Dino. Somehow he knew Mary's Land would blow a 25 pt halftime lead at home no less. I thought Donovan McNabb was QB'ing the Terps with all the ground balls in the 2 nd half. Maryland is as ugly as their uniforms and endzone paint. I could choke all of Maryland and Northwestern for that matter.

Found this on Craigslist.....about an hour away. PO listed it for $450 ....picked it up for $380. Test drove it .....seems fine. PO got it for free and it was parked for a very long time by the original owner. (rusty and dirty) The brackets for the bagger are still attached. Needs a good cleanup from all the debris in the engine bay and transmission area. I could use a clean and clear picture of the motion linkage from a 416H if possible. PO took things apart and well it was clear he lost quite a few nuts and bolts.

you may have seen this one on Ebay..but being I make frequent trips to Iowa, I thought I'd go ahead and grab it. Appears to be an early Lawn Ranger and The guy that I bought it from said his uncle bought it new in the early 60's. He wasn't sure what year it really was, but said it had been sitting a long time. Looks to be in rough shape...but there's a good chance I may attempt a restore on it because I've always wanted one of these early rangers for my collection. Here's a few pics of it when it came home .

Thanks all, and yes, this was the first 3 piece trans i have redone. They are not much fun compared to a 2 piece...lol I have parts to do a 5010, for a 400 I'm going to restore soon....may start on that trans in a month or so. Also, dropped off the engine to get bored today...Will pick it up next weekend and then I can put that together, and maybe shoot some red paint on this stuff and my 57.

If I've done my math right I just locked up the basement before the rest of the games are played.

Craig A yes they do have a web sit but best just to call if need parts. Last year for the 606 I ask if they had the very hard to find seat and hood white bushings They had them. WOW . Just type in there name and it should come up with there web site If Calling ask for E.J. in parts he has been at this for over 30yrs great guy.

Ok, maybe I am missing something here. Other than a lower stance and the air cleaner, what has been changed. I like it stock but I love it the way it looks now. Maybe its because I don't come from a farming background. I love hotrods but not overdone show cars. This is tastefully done and still is the same tractor. Think I will do this with my cub. Well done.

Update I haven't had much time in the garage this week. But I did get my tierods in the mail so I had to try them out they are go cart tierods

Nice Horse! The only problems with your new Stallion are the TORO decals, plastic TORO air screen, the plastic TORO steering wheel cap. Other than those items a great Horse!

OK..just looking for AJ's picks...I gave him a loss on Friday's game...sent him a PM. Got Squonk who missed a pick and Hodge who did the same thing, but in time...can't believe you guys can't count to 7...you guys are your own worst enemies.... Next year..no one gets in the pool with out proof of a GED or better. You have to show that you can count to at least 14...and you have to understand that in the 1st part of the season...and maybe the last week...games can be played on Thursday, Friday and not always on Saturdays. :) Give me a break!!! This is not that hard!!!

Yup, '62 with the solid front tires. Good score! That looks better than mine did when I dragged it out of a cornfield! The tins on yours look straight, and I think thats the hardest part of any restoration.

I got up at 6am this morning and headed to Jason's to drop off a few tractors and then Jason and myself hopped in my van and headed all the way to Cape Cod to pick up something I have always wanted.. It's not NOS but it does have only 250 hrs. on it. She wasn't very well cared for in the cosmetic dept. but it is complete and she does run strong. The engine oil was full and pretty clean so that made me feel pretty good.Very rarely do I ever see a 420 come up for sale. When I knew Jason was buying the 420 I made my offer to Jason and he accepted it. It was as easy as that. I'm happy with what I got on my end and I'm pretty sure he is as well. As for the 417 or 520 being on C/L all I can say is at the end of the day the bills gotta get paid and i hope he does well on them...

You are being a bit hardheaded about this. I and several others told you to remove the head and take some photos but you seem to want to go in another direction. Asking for advice and then ignoring it will do you no good. Most us us speak from experience. Since you admit you are a novice, the smartest thing to do is follow directions from those who have been there and done that. Smoke coming from the starter is not a good thing and you may have burned the starter up. It doesn't take much to do that, especially when it is old. Now you have to see if it still will do the job. First remove the plug and turn the engine over till it stops throwing oil out of the plug hole. Check the oil in the crankcase to make sure that it is not overfilled. Put the plug back in and try to turn the engine over by hand. You should be able to do this even though you will get a considerable amount of resistance. You will have to force it past top dead center on the compression stroke. If you can turn it by hand, then try to start it with the key and the plug in. Make sure you are using a hot battery. If it turns over at the normal speed. the starter is most likely OK. You will not get an accurate reading with that type of gage. You should have one that screws into the plug hole for a good reading. Now pull the head and take the photos.

Got some shorter bolts today, and got the trans together today...seems to work fine by hand.

I'm super happy with what I got from ken ! I know he is that's what counts. He's a great dude that is only one of the few on here understand what and why I sell etc and still enjoy the wheel horse machines as Much as any one. Some are not replaceable . I do regret some sales but when I buy my house this upcoming year and have a garage to myself I'm sure I will hoard them as much as I sell them now. As my inbox Will fill up lol there all available... but at the end of the day that 420 lse ended up in the hands of a ken who will do nothing but right for it!
