9 pointsWe found a forklift last night in Greenfield IN then ran an hour down to Richmond after that to pick up a 953 or 1054, whatever it is. I have all the guards and hood for the tractor along with the right wheels and tires, they're in the truck. The tractor owner also had a cool little dog to play with, my dad used to have one just like her. Can't come home without a of course. I think I will leave the forks alone, just clean them up as they are brass. Now I just have to figure out what should be red and what should be ivory on the soon to be forklift, any ideas?

2 pointsHi All, starting another restoration on a 58 RJ. I bought this one in the spring at mentone as a non runner, got it complete and running and then the trans leaked really bad so I took it out to rebuild it. I have since had the tranny out of it for a couple months...it turned out to need a lot of parts. I finally got it back together last weekend, then realized a sideplate was bent so it don't turn over. I did some diggging around and found a perfect set of sideplates that have no rust pitting...I am going to prime them and sand them so they are nice, so the trans is on hold for a while. Tonight I tore the tractor the rest of the way apart. It will be a easy one to restore because there is not really any rust pitting....I will not have to fill any pits, just prime and sand it...and will have to spend some time on the hood as its kind of dented up. It has an original belt guard and heat shield....it has a newer k91 on it, but I have a correct 3/4" exaust k91 with a shower cap muffler I'm going to swap for this engine off a 400. This will be a slow going project because I still have the 57 rj apart. Anyways...here is it as of tonight. Gonna start sandblasting parts tomorrow and getting them ready to be primed. Thanks, Jake

2 pointsFinally got around to installing a foot control on my GT14 Used 5/16 mild steel rod, yoke and ball end. Made a template with a coat hanger and then got to bending. Between the hydro cylinder supports and to the side of vertical lift arm. View of entire rod. Made the pedal from parts on hand. Large hinge and 3/4 square tube. Added a filler piece of pressure treated wood in the steel frame. Field trials coming up.

2 pointsYes... yes I know... I have a wife, a 1.5yr old and one on the way... So my limited time and money prevent most exploits... Not to mention my wifes thoughts on more than one tractor... (Actually shes been surprisingly tolerant of it so long as I don't spend big $$$.) Thats why this forum exists! I can watch you (and others) spend the money doing what I someday hope to do some of.

2 pointsGeno, My answer to you question is 4. I work on aircraft for a living and in my world 4 is the only answer unless you can find a break using a megger. Caution: always have electronic components disconnected at both ends of the harness when using a megger. Then if you must splice a wire it is always with a sealing splice. Clark

2 pointsWell I'm at my first stop waiting on the customer to open, I slept on it and thought of what all you more experienced guys are saying and I'm gonna call the guy up and say it's not for me, I've been talking with ken last night and I'm gonna meet up with him this weekend and check out his 417...greatly appreciated all you guys advice in steering me out of the clouds you all made great points and just to give this topic closure I wanted to let you all know I'm siding with kens 417 here in CT. It's been a great experience my first time posting and I'll be on almost everyday from here on out, thanks again to you all!

2 pointsSteve i'll just through in my two cents about the electric. I understand that 100 amps is probably all you will ever need. You yourself said you weren't going to take any short cuts on the barn with the money your putting in it and the fact this is the last house your living in for a long time. With that said, I would have Tim do a cost analysts of the difference between the 100 and 200 amp services. If it's not crazy more money, I would go with the 200 amp just for possible future upgrades. If 5 years from now you do want to end up adding electric etc. you'll be glad you did. Remember, when you have 100 amps thats it. Just like a car if the speed limit is 55 then in theory thats all that the car should be able to do. But they make them able to go faster for a reason. You don't want to run at that speed all the time because you'd be running the engine at 100% for extended periods which will end in premature failure. Probably not the best analogy as I know you won't be running everything all at once but I'm sure you get my drift. I'm not an electrician but been around the block if you know what I mean. If it was me, and I was putting the amount of money you are into that project, then an extra $1000-$2000 wouldn't stop me from going with the 200 amp service. But then again, I would have a huge compressor, Bridgeport milling machine, lathe, some type of heating system, welder etc. If you don't do it now and need it later you'll regret you didn't. If you do need a bigger service later on, what a nightmare it will be! Again just my $0.02

2 pointsHere is one of my commando 8 I was trying to sell it and nobody was interested I had it for sale for 250$ and I didn't even get a call on it so I decided to keep it I've been working on the deck and cleaning it up

2 pointsConsider the 314 is a 14HP single cylinder engine. Granted those engines are real work horses, but it still what it is. The 417 is one of the best engines Kohler ever built in my estimation. Twin Cylinder and tough as nails. You said you need something that will be working hard. The Transmission in the 417-A is another very tough piece and will do all you ask of it. I've been around 78 years and seen a lot of deals. I have learned when to walk away. That's my Grandfatherly advise to you. Good luck on whatever you decide.

2 pointsYou sound like a youngster who walked into a new car showroom and just spotted a 1969 Mustang Fastback with 2000 miles on it and a 460 V8 full house engine. Don't be enamored with the glitter of that machine. The worth of something is always an individual thing. He will never sell it at that price. I don't see how a machine with over 345 hours on it can be flawless. Hour meters are cheap and used ones are available. I have at least four of them in my shop. A good car detailer can work wonders on anything with paint on it using a top grade polish and rubbing compound. All you have to do is a little research on this forum to find the how some of our members have worked wonders on an old machine. That 417-8 of Kens is one beautiful machine and I don't care how nice the other one is, if Ken owned it it is for all intents and purposes 100 percent better for everything you could possibly ask it to do that the other one. Worth more money to. As for the bagging of leaves, There are baggers available. In short, Don't buy it!

1 pointGeno, that looks to be another nice find there. If I were to wager a guess, I would say you have a model 1054 or 1054A based on the fan gear steering, the headlights bracket and the seat frame. Looking forward to seeing a post of the "Wheel Horse" fork lift with its new coat of paint!

1 pointWell it is five months later and I decided to spend some more time on this tractor's problem. A few weeks ago I had gone to one of my dealers for parts. I happen to talk with one of his old time mechanics about the no-start issue that I was having. Believe me, I have come close to just selling it as-is because I was so frustrated. I mentioned that I had cleaned the majority of the contacts but still nothing. He suggested changing the ignition switch. I had thought that I had checked for continuity back in May but decided to get a switch to swap out. I became "a parts switcher" mechanic. Today I changed the switch and also replaced the ignition wires with silicone 8mm solid core wire that I have had since the 70's. It was a bit of a search to find boots and terminals in today's market but I did. Connected a fresh battery that was on a battery tender, turned the switch and - voila, it started!!! Reading through the thread Nick (km3h) suggested the switch. A BIG THANK YOU, Nick! Who would have known that it would have been that simple.

1 pointI agree with you about the younger generation. I'm part of the younger generation and they have no idea how to work on anything. If it doesn't work, throw it away and go buy something at the big box store. When I was looking for a new to me tractor for my new property, my wife wanted me to buy something cheap at a store. I found a 520Lxi on Craigslist and I couldn't be happier. After a year of ownership, I tore it down and rebuilt it. I'm not typical of my generation, if it is a challenge, I'll find a way to fix or rebuild it. Today, my tractor runs like new and looks new; it is also better than anything you can buy at the stores today. (You can see my rebuild on YouTube and Toro put a picture of my tractor on their Facebook page) So, I am happy to see the 520s popping up online because I told my wife I might grab one of those up for a great deal. These machines are beasts and I would hate to see them go to scrap.

1 pointRule#1: You have to be at the meet & greet. Don't just fake others out with a "meet & greet" so you can go get all the tractors in the area!! In CT, we started at our homes, and just took turns. The more we did it, the more people came. A lot of fun. Good luck with yours.

1 pointI can't find the pic but don't tell Geno about a real Wheel Horse truck and trailer,,,maybe we lost the pic during the big forum crash???/////but I do remember a pic of it many years ago!

1 pointSpoke with Tim on this. To add 200 amp I need to tap into the street power and add another line/meter over 300 ft to the back of the property to the barn. With a yard full of ledge and hills that is not something I am willing to do.Code states that I need to bury the line a min. of 18" down and if I cannot due to ledge then I need to mix concrete and bury the line that is less than 18" which could end up being most of the line. If I require it in the future then I will do it then. This is a barn and not a machine shop I think that 100 amp will be more than enough. So.. who is coming over Saturday ??

1 pointA quick check of the starter relay can be accomplished as outlined below the engine should crank as long as the trigger terminal is jumped to the battery stud on the relay. Remove the jumper if the engine starts.

1 pointHey Mike, I think if you are new to wheel horses, and someone is trying to push you into a sale (which he is trying to push you into a sale) then it is time to walk away. It might be a nice mower, but another one that nice WILL come along. It might be a while, but it will come along. That is way too much, and frankly, it aggravates me when a salesmen is pushy like that. One thing I learned this past year is never buy something or trade for something based on the other persons word (unless you know them well). I'm 27, and I know it sucks sometimes getting advice from everyone who is.....more experienced....than you, but in the long run, they are just looking out for you and don't want you to do something you will regret. I think there is some wise advice on this thread. Move on, and wait for a machine that is less money. It sucks walking away, but when you get that next machine, you will be happy that you will have all that extra cash in your pocket. Let us know what you decide!

Supposed to come back next Thursday for a CT scan and to get the results from tomorrow's test.So that's where I'm at so far. Thanks again for everyone's support and prayers! That means a lot!
