Classic study in human nature. I guess it depends what side of the cash register you sit on. Buyer screams foul when he pays seller $20 for a $2 part or service which buyer could have made / performed / located by himself. Vendors proclaim commitment to the hobby when they sell something for $20 that was made for $2. Guess the best bargain on the site is .......... me. Troubleshooting advice is always 100% free - for now anyways. World keeps turning .........................

Just brought home another load, a load of pallet racks to put Horses and Horse stuff on. 12,000 lbs per shelf rating should do it. Now I need a small electric walk behind forklift. If you guys want to organize and make more space this should do it. Got it all from a Surplus place in Indiana really cheap.

FWIW - I was looking for an answer to this question a while back but came up with my own solution. I motorized the chute on my 523dxi blower with a GM window motor. It took awhile to figure out how to connect it to the star drive on the motor. I ended up using a twelve point socket and a short 3/8 extension to connect it to the rotator rod. It works great and is easily removable. I drilled a hole through the socket extension to clip it through the rod. Hope this can someone looking to do the same. I had some requests for more photos

Grade 5 will be fine... truthfully, Grade 2 (common zinc coated cheap bolts) are fine for most of the bolts in these tractors. The grading is the hardness of the bolt... what it's going to take to break it or shear it off. Most of the bolts on these tractors are just holding stuff together with very little shear forces in play. Using Grade 8 or 9 is a waste of money. Remember, the harder a bolt is, the more brittle it is.

My local Lowe's has a fairly decent stock of stainless steel nuts and bolts now, but price checking yesterday for five 3/8-16 x 1" carriage bolts for my snow plow, and they were $1.05 each plus $.30 for a washer and $.85 for a lock nut. Same products from Boltdepot.com would have cost about $.75 for everything.

Hmm, how much is a bag of squirrel feed these days? We better get stocked up before the price increase.

there are other ways of getting oem parts and not paying those prices. for example the headlight is just a GE 4411-1 sealed beam. the Onan spark plug wires are still available new under an Onan part number for half that price if i remember correctly. (even that was too much for a basic plug wire......) research is your key here, this forum is a wealth of info with some searching, and the internet is full of oem parts with some searching too. most of the time the original equipment supplier still has their part number on the part and you can find sometimes the parts are still being manufactured.....

I consider it a miracle in today's world to be able to find original parts for a 24 year old tractor from a long out of the Wheel Horse business company. If Wheel Horse had not sold out and remained in business, many more parts would still be available. What gets me though is the fact that this dealer had a NOS part collecting dust on the shelf. He probably only paid about 10 cents on the dollar when he bought it, and now he has the nerve to try to sell it at highway robbery prices. Just my 2 cents worth.

So... it has been less than a week since my brother and i pulled off our trade of my C-161 for his 417-8. Today I was SUPPOSED to be just sneakin out of work for an hour or so to take a look at a 520 Steve might be puting on the block and to check out THE BARN. Little did I know that a Block Buster was about to take place. Here is a little history on what a Block Buster is according to my brother and myself. It is when there is a creative swap with MANYplayers involved to even things up. I walked away with a 520 and a nice 1958 18 hp Johnson.. Steve got himself a MINT 1957 18 hp Evinrude, a very nice 42 inch rear discharge deck, some outboard repair work on two of his outboards and a little cash on top.. (I hope I haven't forgotten any details?) Keep in mind we put this all together in less than 15 minutes! Now that is how its done! The 520 I walked away with is on the right less the deck and leaf vac that Steve is keeping. Its funny because the 520 on the left was mine that Steve got in our very first Block Buster deal. I have wanted another 520 since giving that one up, nothing can push the snow like a 520.. This 520 will probably get a nice worker refurb..

Today was a really good day. We were able to get all the framing in less the rafters. They are all loaded up on the top of the framing ready to be installed. They will be back on Monday. Jeff and Ken both stopped over today. Jeff had the day off so he hung around and helped out. Ken came over on his lunch break and we did a little tradin' I will post pics of what I got on my end in another thread. Here are the pics of where we stand as of tonight. The first pic shows Jeff (Fireman) up helping set one of the last beams in place.

Hey Frank...at least he stopped and asked about it. We horse hunters have been doing that for years...looking down tree lines...along houses and barns. The difference...we stop and ask. It was probably Geno that stopped.

I've had a "round nose" WH parked on my driveway most of the summer (702)...a couple weeks ago a guy from "inter-city" KC pulled in and said he had been watchin' that ole lawn mower and wondered if I was going to throw it away...needless to say I jotted his lic # as he drove away (without the WH) but he got a piece of my mind!!

Here is the tractor that I picked up off CL locally. I swapped the front and rear tires off another 520. It came with a very low hour 48" deck, tiller and 520 long snow plow. It has 650 hours and runs really strong. I mowed with it today and the deck is the most quiet and smooth deck I have ever used. I hope to paint up the wheels and buff it out and maybe new decals from Terry.

I'll watch up here in the North-central part of the state. There were some homes left unattended that they pulled the copper out of and flooded the places in the dead of winter. They aren't scrappers. They are druggies and they don't give a rat's a#* about anything other than their next fix.

I used the mid mount grader on the 418A yesterday to level off the approach on my driveway. The city has the road all tore up to put in water mains, so I graded the approach so it wasn't so rough on the car and truck.

Yup... I agree, groundhog, but shipping jobs oversees is only one (relatively small) part of the equation. It all comes back to greed. Can't stop that... but you can regulate just what a corporation is allowed to do to earn profits. Shipping jobs oversees is just one way corporations have been able to earn more for their shareholders, which is the ONLY responsibility a public corporation has... make profit. Unlike people, corporations have no conscience. The human conscience is our own personal built-in regulatory system. Take that away and an individual is by definition, a sociopath. Corporations are sociopathic in behavior. They function wholly without regard for human beings. That is what they are supposed to do. It's part of the fiduciary "contract" they have with their shareholders. Recently, I applied for credit through Trane for an aging A/C. The financing is through Wells Fargo... a huge bank. When did it become okay to charge 30% APR interest? Oh, and my credit is quite good. Just to be clear, lots of little mom and pop shops are small corporations... privately held corporations. I'm not talking about them. Many, if not most, conduct themselves by the golden rule, doing what's right by others, regardless of whether or not it costs them money to do so. Wall Street corporations do not. They will only "do right" by people IF they somehow think it will have a positive impact on the bottom line. I've worked in the financial industry. If any executive at a publicly held corporation were to conduct themselves in such a humanitarian manner, they would be summarily dismissed. Happens every day.

The bigger picture here is everything everywhere is costing more....including to the Toro dealer. I wonder what it cost that toro dealer to open his door in the morning? -Oil/gas/tools/equipment/computers/inventory/taxes/insurances/power/salaries/licenses/his own pay/etc. If he sells at the original markup of say 16% on a 5-10 dollar item he would be making what .80 to 1.60 profit. IMO he can't afford to run his computer and take the time involved in searching for that kinda money. Ace Hardware gone due to the same issues? People go there to buy the nuts and bolts that gave the owner a few pennies profit, but when it came to larger purchases that would actually give them a little meat on the bone the consumer went to save the $50 at a box store....the same ones we complain about today that pack a few screws and bolts in plastic and cost us much more.

I miss the old fashioned hardware store that I grew up with. Stuff stacked to the ceiling, a crabby old man telling you what you need. Nails bolts and screws were stored in buckets, weighed and put in a paper bag. Now everything is on a computer, and hung on hooks in plastic boxes. Combine the computers, plastic boxes and the fact that so many retailers think that they deserve to be part of the new landed gentry and you get prices like we have. And everything is so far away now. My best hardware options are HD and TSC, both of which are on the other side of town. A twenty minute drive. There is a True Value (with crabby old men) in the next town over. I cannot remember the last time I saw an Ace Hardware.

I'm still working on a new formula. I have 3 games I've decided on. Still on the fence on the others. I'm taking Steve's picks adding them to Brrly's and dividing by 12. Then multiply that by 3. I'll take that number and add the number of snow plows Geno has and then multiply that by the number of items currently in Craig's magic shed. That number will go into a hat which I will pick out blindfolded.

If Wheelhorse had a weakness, (besides not marketing their tractors correctly back in the 80's), it would be a lack of an optional 3 point hitch on the 400 and 500 series machines from the late 80's through the 90's. It wouldn't have taken much more dealer showroom invoice money to offer the same tractor with an available 3 point option on their hydro models. IMO, this was a setback of Toro to companies like John Deere, Cub Cadet, Kabota and even Simplicity which Wheelhorse was competing against in the Garden Tractor categories. The Toro Wheelhorse ease of changing implements and the almost universal availability of implements that fit all the C-series plus the 300, 400 and 500 series tractors would have increased sales and put a lot of pressure on the other manufacturers. There is my weakness verses other brands.

Ford 9n with a FEL was the very first tractor I started on at 5yrs. old. Yeah, go figure, how does a 5yr. old drive one of those tractors, without power steering? How does one even depress the clutch far enough to shift gears.... There is a whole bunch of "how’s" in those first 2 sentences.... Anyway, ford 9n, great little tractor.... Had the FEL on the front and sickle mower off the back. Used it to glean the fields when harvest time came.... You see, back in the 70's the combines were not as efficient, as they are today. If the drum was not constantly full of ear corn to separate, it would shuck full corn cobs out the back.. This was standard across all brands of combines. So what you did was take a tractor with a FEL and walk the end rows... Well at 5yrs. old that was my job.... Take the tractor out to the field after the combine went through and pick up all the full ears of corn lying around... We would get anywhere from a wagon, to a wagon and a half of corn... Usually about 325 to 500 bushels. Now, that is a lot of waste back then..... At $1.25/bushel that paid for all 3 of us kids school supplies for the following year. That included new clothes.. So the 9n brings back some very fond memories..... I can't talk good or bad since I was only 5 and by 7 I had graduated to the International 806 Diesel.... All I know is, if a kid wants to bad enough, he/she will find a way to get it done! Rob
