10 pointsWow, wow, wow! What a great day we had yesterday!!! I will add more throughout the week as I am still trying to recover from all of the fun! I will say it again, you folks are nuts! So many die hards driving from all over the Midwest to spend the day with us in less than ideal conditions. You are all amazing and I greatly appreciate your friendships! We are proud to announce that as a group we raised $1233 for St. Baldrick's this year. That puts our total over 5 grand in the past 4 years! You are all to be commended for your support and dedication! The raffle prizes/donations were absolutely amazing. What a great lesson in teamwork, compassion, and love! A huge thank you to Michael Biser (racinfool40) and Shana for all of your help the day before. You guys rock! Here are a few photos from RedSquare member Michael D Conley. I will work on getting more up this week! He captured all of the fun and he is amazing at capturing the festivities. Thank you!

5 pointsSome of you may have been following my latest 4x4, inspired by Bob Rock and a few others. It's taken a while, but today I finally fastened the tin work on and borrowed my sons C-121 hood - (sorry Ewan), its still also still 4x2 for the pics and video - I needed the tin work in place before I finished the idler and 4WD select/difflock. Seat is almost the right height, just the housing to tidy up and springs to add. and the obligatory video

5 pointsI just picked up a D160 last night and 520h last week I think I'm packed now!!
-
5 pointsI bought my 2nd Horse today, a 1990 312-8 with a 38' deck, it has 782 hrs and is in very nice condition except for 1 problem. The axle bearing on the right side is junk, a lot of play there. Will have to do a transmission job on it. I think it will need a new right axle, I will be looking for help here in the near future, it is in my Dads garage now, lots of room and heated also, got all winter to play with it. I think I got a pretty good deal for $200.00!!! Starts right up, no smoke, and purrs like a kitten at idle.

4 pointsHere are a few pictures I took on Friday. I think Michael Conley took a ton of great pictures...hopefully, he will post them. Great meeting and talking with you sir!! Here is Scott's 1952 Ford (with a flathead V-8)...this really sounded nice. Here is what it looks like on Friday... Some neat parts that Scott has... T-shirts sent from Lars... It was a great time. Thanks Scott I should have taken pictures Saturday, but I never got back to my camera. BTW...Duke and MJ's glass ware is incredible. Squonk, I have a couple of things to send you from the raffle.
-
4 pointsMJ and I had a great time. Dino and thantos rescued me, I was froze to some of MJ's glass ware, and they unthawed me with some liquid sunshine! ~Duke

4 pointsWhile we are on Black Hoods, here is another one of my beauties. This is a 1979 C-161 with fiberglass hood and plastic fender. The fender seems to be much stronger than the later version of the plastic fenders. I can tell you there is no iron oxide (rust) anywhere on this horse. As others have reported the hood is a great place to hold your tools or beer cans. The spots on the hood in the first picture are from two beer cans. The spots did wipe off.

3 pointsyou won't be disappointed Steve we have a great time, its approx a 4 hr drive for me and well worth it,would be great seeing you guys.

3 pointsAnyone who has ever removed the tins from an Onan engine after a few hundred hours can tell you that the rear cylinder is packed solid with debris. I wonder if taking temperature readings with a digital meter pointed at the engine is entirely accurate. Remember the engine is covered with the tin and an accurate reading is relative to engine flow. You really are only getting a reading of the outside of the tins. Since the trouble spot is around the valves, that's where the temperature is critical. After seeing what is accumulated under the engine tins on these engines I have determined that it would be most beneficial to the engine to remove the tins every 100 hours and clean and degrease everything. Sure it is a lot of trouble doing this. but why do we collect these things if we aren't going to tinker with them. A hundred hours of running time is probably three to five years or more in most cases. Seems like a fair price to pay for the sound and power of these engines.

3 pointsIt's not so much a cleaning the screen issue as it is the build up of dust and grass on the cooling fins and acting as insulation preventing proper heat transfer and cooling of the jug/cylinder. remember the oil filter and it's mounting pad change the way that the air flows and creates low pressure/velocity areas where the dirt builds up, the cooling effect on the oil filter is also necessary for engine longevity so if you move it to remote mounting it still needs to be in free flowing air and have long enough lines to act as a cooler. also make sure that the gasket around the filter is in the tins to keep the airflow where it needs to be

2 pointsI picked up this, what was left of a 1961 model 551 Wheel Horse, out of a wooded lot about two years ago. This was a local c-list find for $75. She was pretty much a basket case left for dead in the woods but I really wanted the square pan seat for my dad's 1962 restoration project. The seat you see in the first pic is now on my dad's restored 1962 502 Wheel Horse that I have shown in my avatar. Everything was rust locked solid on this tractor. The transaxle/drive pulley/brake drum does not rotate even though the gear shift is in the neutral position and won't go into any gear. Found a lot of issues to fix including three holes being busted out of the transaxle mounting flange on the back of the main frame... I was pretty much undecided what to do with it until I saw a 1961 Wheel Horse hot rod tractor at the big show this past June. That was all the inspiration I needed. So, I have since started tearing the poor thing down and am building what will become my one-of-a-kind 1961 Wheel Horse hot rod tractor. I have been working on the front end and have painted everything so far in metallic black paint... You can't see the metal flake in the black paint in the pics but up close, it really looks cool. I have mounted 10 x 4.5 x 5 quarter midget wheels/tires on front and installed a racing go-kart steering wheel so far... Next, gotta work on disassembling the transaxle to figure out what the problem with this is...

2 pointsPictures, Pictures, Pictures, Everyone wants pictures! I think my camera is still frozen. Lets take a quick look to see if there were any ROCKWELL moments? Yes here is one I have found. This would be a special moment I caught Scott, with his daughter and a friend walking all the way back to the barn from the middle of the field after the drive pulley decided to exit his 1045! Sorry Scott, didn't think you would post this one.
-
2 pointsSo, I'll make this one short and sweet. I found a 1967 1277! She's not pretty, but she's solid! Runs and drives great! I'll have to make a tie-rod adjustment though & I just wish the rear fender pan wasn't as bent up, but I think I found a new winter worker! OH MY was it wet and rainy getting it though.
-
2 pointsI moved the seat bumpers out to the seat slide/lower rear spring bolt. Makes the seat much more stable greatly reducing the loose rocking sensation. The coil springs are gone because I do not have seat switches. I also applied self adhesive rubber pads on the fender for paint protection. Cleat

2 pointsUse two set screws 90 degrees apart with lock nuts. Put the hub on and tightin down the woodruff key set screw enough to leave a witness mark on the woodruff key. Remove the hub and grind a notch in the woodruff key where the witness mark lies. Reinstall the hubs, tighten the set screws and locknuts. Problem solved

2 pointsIf anyone needs me I'll be fumbling around in down in the basement till next week..
-
2 pointsIf that C-161 can't push some snow I'm gonna have ta call operator error! My brother Dave and myself have pulled off dozens of trades thru the yrs. whether boat, outboard or tractor related. One time a camper was involved! Green Backs are rarely exchanged.. Steve you could have been a player but had no workers to offer? Here is the 417-8 I got thru the trade thru my brother after an hour or so of deep cleaning..
-
2 pointsThe 161 was a unique animal. Kind of a mismash of parts. The hood was fiberglass and slightly different to fit to the older style hood stands. After the c-1x5 series was launched in 80 they all had steel hoods and plastic fenders (not fiberglass) in 81 the hydros recieved the much improved Eaton 11 trasmission. Sometime in 84 they started getting metal fender pans. Oddly enough the modern hood started in 82 or so with the el cheapo box store lt1100 hood. Toro decided unfortunatly to run with that ugly hood from then on. My guess as to why the back hood was discontinued was it was expensive ro manufacture. Being that the hood stand was die cast aluminum and the hood itself was several pieces welded together. My first tractor btw was an 81 c-125 that wanted a 5 hp upgrade and is now a c-175. She is my main worker and is a beast. Certainly one of the best tractors they ever made. You can have your ugly 520's I'll keep my blackhood and its trouble free kohler.

2 pointsFinally, I'm breathing again this morning after that Notre Dame game and then seeing so many "top" teams lose. What a crazy season for all of college football. Gotta love it

2 pointsWell just came in and I am as ready as I can be. Is everything perfect??? Nah......but we will sure have fun tomorrow. Plowing is a big iffy. Hope this wind will help dry things out before morning. We have about 40 tractors on site right now. Biser is asleep in the barn, others are in town in hotels, and even a few more are in the next town over in hotels. You guys are amazing and your dedication is top notch! Everyone drive safe in the morning and thanks so much for coming!

1 pointHere's my C-125 with fenders from a 310-8 that met it's fate in a shed fire. I just can't keep my tire chains shiny! That's a mixing cup over the cracked fuel cap.

1 pointI only had a short time to be there due to an afternoon commitment, so I was happy that Mrs. Bob (my wife Theresa) tagged along. Hopefully she enjoyed herself enough to try it again. She did enjoy meeting and having some pie with Mr. and Mrs. Buckrancher (Brian & Jo). Always a pleasure to see you guys.

1 pointThank you very much guys. That is a great help. I can get 2 5/8 od here in france , so it will be easier for me to get the chap in the village to bore the castings. Once again thanks for your help, Dave
