6 pointsGood Day, I just wanted to express my sincerest thanks to the contributers on this site. I have spent many hours reading the posts here and they have helped me figure out the "secret code" of the Wheel Horse electrical system. I would like to send out a special thanks to Nick (KM3H) "416 No Start Electrical Problems" and to Gino for his great advice under this topic. I'm looking forward to learning much more here. Your members have a wealth of knowledge they share on this site.....I just wanted to say THANKS! Best Regards To All, Dave

6 pointsMounted my mid mount grader blade to the 314 last night. I was hoping to use it for removing the english ivy in my front yard. I purchased the grader blade off of craigslist for 100 bucks. It is a home made job, but is pretty heavy and I think it will work really well. I bolted some cultivator tines to it so it would rip into the ground a bit better. After using it a little bit last night, I think I am either going to have to flip the tines over so that there is only about an inch sticking below the blade, or move the threaded rod that is used to set the grader angle. Currently the blade cannot be lifted all the way off the ground which makes for driving in the yard a bit of a pain. The thing that is hitting the frame of the tractor is the threaded rod. The blade is so heavy that I did not feel the need to put the solid link onto the tractor, but after using it, I believe that I will. Grader blade w/out tines: Grade blade w/ tines: Grader blade mounted to tractor: Ivy: Ivy: No after picture shots yet

5 pointsWell some of you know that KenB is big into vintage boats and outboard motor collecting and restoring. He got me hooked... Here are two of my boats before and after pics. I want to thank Terry for all his help in making the decals. He made a set of reggie lettering and Crestliner side decal that is being shipped now for the aluminum boat. I love the horses but as Ken says it is a nice change to have another hobby.

-
3 pointsThis show also has a very cool small scale train set-up you can actually ride on for free...

3 pointsNice pics everybody....Thought I'd add a few of my own now ........A few snap shots of wheel horses in the parade.

3 pointsI don't get not running at full speed for cutting grass. Here in GA, our grass gets dry and tough and even with sharp blades can be hard to cut unless you drive slow. I wanted to be able to cut grass in high 3rd with my 160 so I upsized the pto pulley to spin the blades faster. I set the high idle speed to 3600-3650 with a tach and keep it that way when mowing. For other lighter jobs, its set to give enough power for what I'm doing. As far as splash lubrication in these motors, I can promise that there is plenty of oil flying around inside at the 1200 rpm idle speed if the oil is full. Imagine dipping into the oil 20 times a second. Oil everywhere.

2 pointsThis is my first, and probably, only restoration. I couldn't have done it without the help of you good folks, and I thank you for all the help and advice. Thanks especially to Steve, Gene and Zane, and there are many others whose names escape my memory right now. This is my first attempt at posting pictures also, so I hope they are there. Thanks

2 pointsThe Commando 7 was an export only model, built in South Bend, only sold overseas. As far as I know, you'll not find one in the U.S.
-
2 pointsNow I feel really left out! With all the Hawkeye logo stuff I seen laying around (Wah,wah, wah). Looks like MJ has found a new hobby, just as long as she can keep you at bay!
-
2 pointsWell I did build a dump truck when I first got into the hobby and was doing a lot of fabricating. I didn't us a Wheel Horse though because I had quite a few 'FREE' Craftsman's around here. I used two frames mounted end to end and overlapped. I did a lot of work on that project and learned a lot by building it.

2 pointsI have 5 k181 8hp wheel horses I have no complaints about them they are hard working little motors I'm impressed what 8hp can do.
-
2 pointsJasen, don't be surprised if you get differing opinions. I respect them all. For mowing and I run them wide open. For pulling a trailer or just driving from point A to point B, I run about 3/4 throttle or a little higher.

2 pointsnext thing to do is adjust the clutch discs in the trans. I believe that explains my acceloration issue. OK Van, here is what a 6'3" 260 pound guy looks like on a short frame. My size 14 clod hoppers don't fit very well on the foot pegs.

1 pointWent to yardsales as usual this weekend. Was at one talking to the guy and my wife came over to me and said there was a Wheel Horse over by the garage. So kinda jokingly I said to the owner "How much for the Wheel Horse". (I hadn't even seen it) He said "What Wheel Horse?". I said "The one over by the garage." Well, I came home with it. I paid him and loaded the van. It's not perfect. He was replacing the engine. The intake elbow is missing. The rear axle is model #90-2046. He has the correct rear hubs someplace. I didn't see the PTO any place. No seat. He gave me all the extra parts in the pic. A "K301S" with a gear on the shaft. The 15" wheels. A starter generator. The carb and air filter are there. So .... should I fix it up? Nothing is known about the replaced rear axle. I'm leaning toward putting it back together. If he has the hubs and I can find an intake elbow it will be well on the way to recovery. I don't have much in it at this point. Here's the pics. I became a supporter today just to make it easier to share the photos. Thanks, Joe

1 pointYesterday my son and I put the Charger 12 to work out in the back woods. First we used it to pull 3 oak logs out of the woods to where we could use the chain saw to cut them up. The log chain hooked to the hitch did the trick with those logs. Next we had to take care of a second oak tree that had fallen down last year. There was a nasty stump maybe 300++ pounds to remove, not too bad a job because the tree fell over and most of the stump came out of the ground. We wrapped the log chain around it and with a lot of coaxing and prying with the shovel, it came out of the hole. But with a bigger Horse that job would have been easier. The Horse dragged it down hill to the burn pile, for it's final resting place. G.

1 pointI also wouldn't think of not running full throttle to cut grass. I also know most manuals say to run higher RPM's but I never have, only for cutting. I guess I would for tilling or snow blowing but I haven't done that yet. I wonder if the high rpm thing is just when they're working and under load, and is the high RPM for oil, or air to dissapate the heat? If I'm using one around the yard it's lucky if it ever gets to 1/4 throttle, and idles plenty. I figured also that there was plenty of oil slinging around in there. The 414 has been in the family for 27 years and that's how it's been used since it was new, it is completely quiet and there is zero oil use between changes.

1 pointWas there a short frame and long frame version of the black hoods? Reason I ask is that I just got the C175 my dad worked on and the hood on the left side is cut out around the motor and has louvers in the top. I dont think it is the right hood as my dad could have changed it. I do remember trimming a hood for him but that was around 4 years and 12 tractors ago. Just wondering. I think the rest of the tractor is correct.

1 pointComplete impulse buy. It's a pile but for $100 with a deck and snow plow figured why not. 252-h Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

1 pointWell good morning RS. I am posting this for anyone in the NW Ohio or surronding area that wants to bring there tractor and talk Wheel Horse's. Actually the conversation doesn't have to be about tractors, but we all have a good time there each year. This is the seventh year for doing this show. I believe that the Neapolis FD puts on a car show with the church also holding a rummage sale. It does not have to be a Wheel Horse, bring one bring all. It's a good time for all! The pictures I've posted are from earlier shows. There will be plenty more

1 pointI bought the snow thrower at the sale in pa this was when I first got it home I've got wheel weights and chains on it now missed out on a snowcab

1 pointI am sorry I stirred up so much discussion on this topic. I reacted a little too strongly. I will try to get a few more photos this afternoon and post them. If I still get an error that they are too large, I will reach out to one of several of you who offered to help.

1 pointI joined this forum about a week after I repainted it. But I have been thinking about doing a build thread from the beginning to where it is now which has been modified more and more slowly over the last 2 years. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

1 pointThe first thing I would do is check the coil when it starts to misfire. Easiest way is to simply switch plug wires at the coil. If the front cylinder misses then you know that the coil fails when hot. Not sure about the Onan, but on the Kohler twins I used a coil from a Harley Davidson Motorcycle on my 417-8. Lots of other guys have done it also and it works like a charm. You will need to make sure that the voltage feeding the coil is correct as there are two different voltages. I am sure there is someone here who can tell you which one to get. The Harley after market coils are very reasonable. Mine was about $32.00 new. If you have not already done so, you should remove all the tins from the engine and clean the fins thoroughly. The rear of that engine gets caked with debris and causes it to overheat. The maintenance manual states that the engine should be de-carbon every 500 hours. Bet this has not be done before. Heavy carbon can cause all kinds of problems. So I think you should solve the coil issue first and then remove the engine no matter the coil is bad or not and give it a complete cleaning and get that carbon out of there. Here is what my engine looked like after 535 hours.

1 pointBoy don't I feel foolish using a F350 four door long bed and a 16ft trailer and spending $$$$ on diesel fuel. Ya making look bad here. Oh yeah nice find. Looks in good shape.
