Found this pic the other day of my father pulling me in the wagon with our 701. Thought I'd share it with everyone. Those were the good ol days! :-)

Good Day, I just wanted to express my sincerest thanks to the contributers on this site. I have spent many hours reading the posts here and they have helped me figure out the "secret code" of the Wheel Horse electrical system. I would like to send out a special thanks to Nick (KM3H) "416 No Start Electrical Problems" and to Gino for his great advice under this topic. I'm looking forward to learning much more here. Your members have a wealth of knowledge they share on this site.....I just wanted to say THANKS! Best Regards To All, Dave

Mounted my mid mount grader blade to the 314 last night. I was hoping to use it for removing the english ivy in my front yard. I purchased the grader blade off of craigslist for 100 bucks. It is a home made job, but is pretty heavy and I think it will work really well. I bolted some cultivator tines to it so it would rip into the ground a bit better. After using it a little bit last night, I think I am either going to have to flip the tines over so that there is only about an inch sticking below the blade, or move the threaded rod that is used to set the grader angle. Currently the blade cannot be lifted all the way off the ground which makes for driving in the yard a bit of a pain. The thing that is hitting the frame of the tractor is the threaded rod. The blade is so heavy that I did not feel the need to put the solid link onto the tractor, but after using it, I believe that I will. Well some of you know that KenB is big into vintage boats and outboard motor collecting and restoring. He got me hooked... Here are two of my boats before and after pics. I want to thank Terry for all his help in making the decals. He made a set of reggie lettering and Crestliner side decal that is being shipped now for the aluminum boat. I love the horses but as Ken says it is a nice change to have another hobby.

I don't get not running at full speed for cutting grass. Here in GA, our grass gets dry and tough and even with sharp blades can be hard to cut unless you drive slow. I wanted to be able to cut grass in high 3rd with my 160 so I upsized the pto pulley to spin the blades faster. I set the high idle speed to 3600-3650 with a tach and keep it that way when mowing. For other lighter jobs, its set to give enough power for what I'm doing. As far as splash lubrication in these motors, I can promise that there is plenty of oil flying around inside at the 1200 rpm idle speed if the oil is full. Imagine dipping into the oil 20 times a second. Oil everywhere.

This is my first, and probably, only restoration. I couldn't have done it without the help of you good folks, and I thank you for all the help and advice. Thanks especially to Steve, Gene and Zane, and there are many others whose names escape my memory right now. This is my first attempt at posting pictures also, so I hope they are there. Thanks

You mean you haven't downloaded the mobile app & have a RAM mount for your phone so you can type while mowing ?

The Commando 7 was an export only model, built in South Bend, only sold overseas. As far as I know, you'll not find one in the U.S.

Now I feel really left out! With all the Hawkeye logo stuff I seen laying around (Wah,wah, wah). Looks like MJ has found a new hobby, just as long as she can keep you at bay!

Well I did build a dump truck when I first got into the hobby and was doing a lot of fabricating. I didn't us a Wheel Horse though because I had quite a few 'FREE' Craftsman's around here. I used two frames mounted end to end and overlapped. I did a lot of work on that project and learned a lot by building it.

I have 5 k181 8hp wheel horses I have no complaints about them they are hard working little motors I'm impressed what 8hp can do.

Jasen, don't be surprised if you get differing opinions. I respect them all. For mowing and I run them wide open. For pulling a trailer or just driving from point A to point B, I run about 3/4 throttle or a little higher.

next thing to do is adjust the clutch discs in the trans. I believe that explains my acceloration issue. OK Van, here is what a 6'3" 260 pound guy looks like on a short frame. My size 14 clod hoppers don't fit very well on the foot pegs.

I lost my grandma last year and at her estate auction I wanted to purchase something I knew would be around for a while that my sons could enjoy. That's where her 1989 312-8 comes in. I think I paid $325 for the tractor and deck but no mule drive (it was misplaced years ago) and the tractor wouldn't always start. I pay the neighbor kids to mow my lawn, so the deck wasn't really important to me at the time, and with no mule drive, kinda useless. I ended up trading my father-in-law the deck for a storage tent for the back yard. That was kind of a mistake. I'll explain more later. So late last winter, I started looking for a Rototiller for my 312-8 and that's when I stumbled on this site and shortly after that is when the obsession started. In the last roughly month and a half, I have bought four more horses, a snowblower, Rototiller, snowplow, belly blade. The horses are: GT-1848 that came with the snowblower, a 252-h with deck and snowplow (needs work), a b-165 with deck that needed a starter gear (fixed) mows good. And my most recent purchase a 518-h with a deck, snowplow, belly blade, and a bunch of spare parts. That tractor needs motor work and is for sale: I'm not good with engines. So far I've learned a bit on the ones to stay away from and some good deals when I see them. So, it turns out the tent works good to keep all the junk out of the barn and keep the horses in their stables. I'm married with two little boys 5yrs and 2yrs. Surprisingly, my wife hasn't gotten too mad over the fact I still pay the neighbors kids $20 to mow the lawn with 5 horses in the barn. Sorry for the novel, I guess I was rambling, Matt Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Great write up Van! Nothing like getting a machine running that you have never heard run! In regards to what you are going to do with it, I'm thinking that if you decide to let it go, it won't make it past Raleigh on your way to the big show! I keep waking up at night thinking it is calling my name....

Thinking to much about a couple of the games...... Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, NIU, Oregon, Notre Dame, Ohio State. I am with Bitten and Steve regarding Northwestern last year.... They showed up on games you did not expect to win and lost the one's you were sure they would do well..... Watch them jump all over NIU....The other game I am not so sure about is Maryland..... USF is tough at home, and they have a Freshman RB that was the star of the game last week.... Another "Mack" is back in College football....If everyone remembers the "Dawg" pound used it's first pick of the 2009 draft to pick Alex Mack...... Just a little history is all... Rob

The 8HP is not as good as the big blocks. I have never owned a good one, they all needed rebuilt badly. The first rod damaged the cam but did not break it. The rest is history as the crank has something wrong. It will make a good parts engine, but at this point I would bet the crank is shot.

All due respect to those who run less than full throttle, but every small engine manufacture states in their literature that it is to be operated at full throttle at all times. Many of these engines do not have oil pumps and get lubrication from a splash. The faster the splash the more lubrication. The faster the flywheel turns the more air circulates to cool the engine. When you turn three blades as fast enough to cut grass it takes a lot of horsepower. Remember that the blades have an upward curve which uses energy and causes air resistance.

I need to study mine to come up with some suggestions. The idea of the shroud is to keep the air plenum as tightly sealed as possible so that the cool air flows from the back, over the cylinder heads and finally over the muffler to exit at the front. So what would happen if you drilled a 1/4 diameter hole in the plastic shroud behind the heads so you could insert an air nozzle (the kind with the 4-6 inch tube) into the hole to blow out the fins? I don't think 1/4 would effect things that much. You may even make it larger providing that you have a rubber plug to put in the hole afterwards. Of course, drilling a hole in this confined space is all but impossible unless you have a right angle drill head. I am guessing that is why Jim is going to use a cutoff wheel. BTW, despite my woes about my xi shutting down when it gets hot, I have never had the engine temp gauge go much beyond a tad to the right of center, still well within the green. Also, the fact the gauge is green and yellow (v. green and red) would lead me to believe that there is more margin of error than we think. If there was not a gauge, would we even know? The Command Pro in my 314 does not have a gauge. It is a single cylinder, but when I bought it, I pulled off the tins and the main shroud was packed solid with fine dirt. You could even see where the flywheel had worn a groove in the dirt, yet the fins on the head were free from most debris! Finally, running lean will increase cylinder temps. I assume Rob checked this as well

I have a 32" earlier model blower that has been converted over to an attach-a-matic setup. I used it on my C-81 last year and it worked really well. I am going to make some extensions for the side wings to extend it out to a 40 inch or so cut and put it on my SK486 this winter. If we get hammered with deep snow like we did last winter I will much rather use the Kohler 16 than the 8. I have thrown a lot of snow with a C160 in the past. I am sure the SK486 should work just as well.

When I see anything "restored" or original, the first thing I look for are the decals. I used to have a book somewhere with all the automotive engine decals from years past. Always cool to look at. Duke might have to sprinkle some "Magic Cakes" around the basement and work some VOODOO! but MJ will do fine. I'm looking forward to next year all ready and gonna seek out that Italian restaurant that Steve goes too!
