3 pointsOK everybody, here are the pics! Didn't get them posted yesterday due to having to work overtime. I hope you enjoy them.
-
3 pointsHere are a few more pictures of the Sycamore Show from my I phone. Water Tank for the Steam Tractors
-
2 pointsAll 3 tecumseh carbs I have in my parts stash have 10-32 screws to hold the air cleaner on, 1//2" long should be ample.
-
2 pointsWell my stepmom called me and said if I wanted the rest of my dad's tractors, come get them. So needless to say you know what I did this afternoon. I know I got a 312-8 with a magnum 12 in it, think I got a c81 and not sure on the last one. It has a k241 in it. Not sure if any of the motors are original. Try to get better pics later. Ran out of light.
-
2 pointsGet it hot, run it for at least 20 min to 30 min just warming up. Then find a tree, light pole or any immovable object. Bring motor up to power, then engage drive. If tires spin you should have a good trans. If it sits there and groans and doesn't do anything, run run run the opposite direction/ Chains look like four or six link. I'd lose those
-
2 pointsTires didn't look all that bad. New ones are pricey, As other have stated how does it run when heated up? Get her hot then try to push some dirt around. You are buying a basic snowplow tractor what is that worth to you? Ds are not the most efficient or easiest to use device if you want to cut grass...plus a deck will cost you more $$$. I would stay closer to 500.

1 pointI finally got a chance to rebuild a transmission with a hi/low mechanism. This is a 6 speed #5060 transmission with the 10 pinion limited slip differential. Notice the brake shaft comes out the hole closest to the axle housing. The 8 speeds brake shaft comes out of the cluster shaft hole. I did a series of videos for this thread along with some pictures. The videos are split up between different phases of rebuilding...ie...the differential, the hi/low shift mechanism, the rest of the gears 1 & 2 (my batteries died in the camera). Most of the information will be in the videos...be advised that I did some struggling while doing these videos and I left them as is because it is not always easy. Hope this helps you guys. correction... According to the manual the bolts that hold the differential together are in backwards in the video. The nuts should be on the input shaft side (right side) of the transmission. Sorry, I missed that. Just got the trans split. I use a 1" old wood chisel to start and then work the case apart with a pry bar. A couple shots after getting the case half off...trans is in neutral. The trans case works as a work bench for the differential...very cool Here is the reason the trans needed to be opened. An axle gear lost it's teeth and the pieces were lodged in the pinions. Finished and back together. The rest are the videos...1st on is the differential... Next 2 are dealing with the hi/low mechanism...1st one taking apart and the 2nd on putting together...be nice...it was my first time. Now, 2 videos putting the rest of the trans together...batteries died just before I finished the first video. Thanks for looking

1 pointOne thing I do have to say, Martin's 416 looks better in person that it does in his rebuild thread. Outstanding job Martin! I'd love to have that in my garage. I hear you were offering rides..... after I left.

1 pointHeres my commando 8 with the narrow frame plow on it ive moved lots of dirt gravel and snow with it

1 pointI posted a picture of what I think is a very early model this morning. Could anyone tell me something about it from the picture? I'm not so good at this and I'm not sure where this mail actually will end up. Sorry but it's a cute little tractor and it runs great.

1 pointGeno, you're starting to tick me off. Will you leave some red for other folks? Better yet, send some down here. I like the idea of the weights but the dangling would drive me even nuttier than I already am. I think those are old window counter weights. It amazes me how many uses those things have been used for.

1 pointI'd really like to hear that CHIME PLOW play "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas".

1 pointThanks Steve..I wouldn't even think about opening a tranny, but after watching your tutorial videos, I think I'm ready to try it.

1 pointSounds like it is in the differential Ed...axle gear, pinions or the spring. Just did a thread on a 6 speed, 10 pinion, limited slip. Take a look. You 5073 works and looks like this 5060. The noise you hear is the spring rubbing on the pinions...I would think some noise is normal. You may want to open it up to see if the spring is bent or broke, or if any teeth are missing on the pinions or axle gears. You do not have to take out the rest of the gears in the trans, the differential will just pull right out. Make sure you have the shallow or input shaft side of the trans down when you open it.

1 pointThese are some pics I found once. I couldn't mount one on mine as it has the easy ride seat. the seat spring tower uses the bolt holes and block the fans location.

1 point$750 max. I don't think the snow blade is even Wheel Horse. Thats only if the hydro Is Strong. My thoughts only
-
1 pointHeard we are in some sort of cycle. Farmers Alamanac says another just like last year is what I've been hearing. I think T town had almost 90" of white stuff last year. I believe we have had two or three days at 90 degrees in other words Yes, a mild summer. Good looking blower, I had one and sold it because the 522xi went away so I sold the blower. Still have the 520xi with blade so it should handle it. Didn't take blade off until July 15
-
1 pointI second what Steve says. I think Sparky sold his absolutely mint D for like $1900. $1500 is like shooting for the moon. In these times even $1000 is high. The D160 his buddy is selling I believe he paid $500 for it. New tires all the way around is gonna run you around $300-$400 for that tractor. Between $500 and $700 is all I would go. Just my $.02
-
1 pointI have a buddy with a D160 that he went through mechanically and it runs really nice. It needs paint etc and cannot sell it for $700 with no attachments. I would tell him to try and sell it on CL for what he wants and if it does not sell in a week or so then he should call you and you can talk. this way he "tried" to get his money for it (which he will not) and you both feel better if you agree on a price of around $750...

1 pointThese are all "garden tractors" and as such are very capable of moving snow, plowing a garden and anything else that they were designed to do. When you start making pulling tractors out of these horses...that is when you get into the number of pinions and the diameter of the axle.
-
1 pointI really don't think things like you're mentioned are any problem with the 4 pinion, 1" transmissions. One of my tractors up north was a 84 GT1100 (the gray ones). It was the tractor I used to push the snow off my 800' of driveway. We had some nasty snows too since we were right in the lake effect area off Lake Michigan. Since it was more fun to push snow the only time I got the 16hp out to blow it was when it was just too much. I also plowed (dirt) with it. The tiller went on the 16hp because the axle hitch was different on mine. As far as why they made them. I'd say is was just a cost thing.

1 pointGreat pics of a great show Steve and Terry! David and I had a great time and enjoyed catching up with all the Red Square members in attendance. The Sycamore Show is as good as Steve says it is -that's for sure! I just got home after five days in northern Indiana and Illinois-but I need to get these posted! Here are a few of the pics I took at the show!

1 pointA Kohler sounds better?? Did you have ear muffs on? Nothing sounds better than an Onan when it's right. Of course I've only had two Onan 16's since I' ve always been partial to the 20"s.
-
1 pointThanks for the info Martin. I have that wiring diagram now but couldn't be sure until your post. As far as liking Onans...you're right, they're not my favorite engine in any way shape or form. I would have been a lot happier finding my Dad a 418. But this thing is in super shape even though it was so dirty. I replaced that molex connector today and she fired right up once fuel got to the bowl. I still think a Kohler 16 sounds better.....

1 pointLucky Boy! All smiles as it should be! You should be ashamed of yourself infecting the youngsters with Wheel Horse Addiction! My two sons have WHA too! Our 1st Horse (forget the model) was 'bout 40 years ago. We did own a few Cubs along the way, not bad. Not the big box thingys of today.
-
1 pointI think that everyone should get a chance to play with the detente balls and spring...push those things together and try to get a shaft by them...while sliding out an Allen wrench and keeping the setup together.
-
1 pointjust watched the differential video, Steve. nicely done. i like the fact that you didn't edit it in anyway, it shows us through your work what to look out for and what problems we may come across while assembling. going to watch the others now!! so does this mean that you have now joined the hi/lo rebuilders club?
-
1 pointI think I'd better stop looking at the pictures now, I'm dribbling too much on the keyboard Fantastic build, love it
-
1 pointI would say that most of the problems with the techy carb and cleaning it and still not running right is the fact that you can not get to the place the carb clogs up just taking it apart and soaking it will not clean the low speed passage which is the place 90% of them clog up you have to remove a brass plug from the carb body to gain access there is a small metal rod in this passage also.with the bass plug removed you can get the metal rod out and use a pipe cleaner and spray carb cleaner on the passage way to clean it a fast check to tell if you have a clogged low speed passage is with the carb off the tractor remove the jets, bowl ,float, needle hold the carb body next you your ear and shake it up and down you should hear a clink of the small metal rod moving back and forth in it's passage way if it does not the passage way is clogged up Brian

1 pointVery cool, I bet you were so siked to finally see it outside, and get to start playing with it a little. Out of curiosity, were you guys making "vroom vroom" noises when you sat behind the wheel? lol In all seriousness though, it is quite astonishing to see this, and I really enjoy watching this unfold. Keep it up!
