6 pointsJust picked this up. My first old tractor. I saw it and had to have it, was told it has the stock motor, tires, blade etc. But no cutting deck. Has been repainted (poorly) and the blade has had some repairs but it runs good and starts second pull every time so I think I may keep it. I was also told that it was a one year model (1969) but really dont know much about it. Any comments would be helpfull. Thanks.

6 pointsOver the winter I went completely through a 32" deck that I bought from a guy in Inez, Ky. It was almost a labor of love, but I do have the 701 up and mowing again for the first time in 14 years! Needless to say, I'm a happy camper! Lol!

3 pointsThese little tractors are like Lay's Potato Chips, one isn't nearly enough. Found this one listed on CL and took it home today. The po listed it as an 18hp with a 38" deck??? Okay neither are correct, it's actually a K241 10hp with a 42" deck. The overall condition is pretty good but the engine smokes under load, no knocks or clicking so I might be lucky enough to get out of it with just a ring job, but in the end will do whatever it takes. Now this is not the original engine since it is a 1979 C-111 and was manufactured with an 11hp B&S and from the looks of the frame rails and the left side if the grille it had something much larger in it at one time. Still, I'm happy to have it and will enjoy fixing it up. Below are some pics of it along side my C-161.

2 pointsSo I acquired a 3 point hitch and tiller attachment from a roper. Going to attempt to retro this to my 518H. My plan is to fab a 2" receiver and then weld a piece of 2" square stock to the main mount of the 3PH. This way it will be a quick release sort of setup. Let me know if anyone has any good suggestions. Thanks Jay

2 pointsWell finally tore in to the 414 The head bolts were so loose I could have taken them out with my hands alone. Pulled the plug out, pulled the head off, thought what the heck and took the carb off to clean, cleaned up the valves piston and block, cleaned the head up good, check for flatness and then sanded just a little. Then after cleaning carb, I put it all back with new gasket, head bolts, plug, engine oil, and air filter I fired her up. thought to myself where I can find some tall grass... There is a foreclosure on my block so I headed that way roaring down the block at 10:00 PM. I pulled into the waist high grass kicked on the PTO and went to town grinning from ear to ear. Man its like a whole new machine. I brought her back home retorqued the head bolts and went back to the tall grass. Then something terrible happened.... My wife told me I was keeping the neighbors up and asked me to shut it down.

1 pointDon't forget there is a relief ball and spring. Broken spring = low pressure.
-
1 pointYou were right but I'm having a hard time getting the wife to see it that way
-
1 pointYep, told ya...you'd get more. Two great lookin' 's there... and more are sure to follow.

1 pointThanks AMC Rules. Just what i need. Glad I found this site. Think Iam hook and will have to keep it.

1 pointGood points all Bob. I will add though, that even here in Indiana, people are forgetting about Wheel Horse. When I mention mine, pretty often I get a quizzical look, especially from younger folks, as they have no idea what I am talking about.
-
1 pointTrue, but I have to be careful not to over do it. I don't want to break me. As far as worth, it all depends on what somebody wants to pay for it. Indiana is blessed with a good supply of Wheel Horses compared to some other locations. That can work both ways. There's also more folks that know and want them so in an auction format it could bring more. generally it's not feasible to ship them and a local pick up is more likely. Down here there's not all that many who even know what a Wheel Horse is and that could work both ways as well. For example, I got my Surburban 400 on Ebay. It was just 15 miles from my house. I put a proxy bid in at a number that was higher than I should have paid but I wanted it bad and you just don't find them down here often. But, because of the lack of bidders, there was only 2 bids and i got it for a good price. I'm sure it it would have been located in your neck of the woods there would have been more bidders and the price would have been higher. But....if there was even one other bidder that wanted it bad down here the price could have skyrocketed because of the rarity in Florida. I hope that all makes sense Watching Ebay it's crazy how the prices vary.

1 pointJust tear it down and do it RIGHT. Shouldn't take more than 2 hrs. or so and you'll be good to go.

1 pointwheelhorse66...I was not mad at all. You have to remember that when you start a thread, there are a ton of people that want to contribute and offer help...also, a lot of people will read your thread. If the wrong information gets put in your thread, because not enough information was given, it can lead to confusion and even someone going out and buying the wrong parts. I would not have even posted in your thread, because rmaynard had already answered your question, but came in to qualify what RacinBob posted. wheelhorse66...I just went back through the transmission section and re--read all of your threads. For one thing, you never seem to put in all the information needed to get an answer right off the bat...almost in every thread, someone is asking you for more information. For another thing, you never seem to come back in and say if the information you received, for nothing, helped...nor have you ever said "Thank You for your help". I am not attacking you...it is just that a little manners would go a long way.

1 pointYo' Dino, love the pictures! Wondering if you've got your sundial fixed yet? Well of course not, All it does is rain there so I'm sure it's still not accurate, I am also looking forward to next years show. Quick bit of info Winter has been cancelled for 14'-15' so we have more time to get ready for next years show. We can only hope!

1 pointIf I remember correctly, the PTO switch is a slide type deal. There are plastic clips on the back of it behind the dash. You are correct, easy to break if not gentle with it. The switch is probably the problem with the PTO working intermittently. A good cleaning with electrical parts cleaner hopefully will get it working again. Try applying 12 volts directly to the PTO to see if it works consistantly. If so, clean the switch and keep your fingers crossed.

1 pointI mow with my 701 as well with the original hidden rear roller wheels and I love it. I only use it for the small clean up areas that I cannot get to with the 60" on the 520 tho

1 pointI don't think Steve was mad, just a little annoyed. So many people ask questions that are vague, and don't include sufficient information to answer properly. The folks here on this forum really do want to help, but those of us that ask the questions need to make sure we give as much information as we can to assist them. You know it is a 4-speed, but the gurus here don't know what type of 4-speed it is. And yes, it does matter what tractor it is in, as that information can help to pin down the tranny type. Again, I don't think anyone is mad, they just want as much information as possible so that they can accurately help. Quite frankly, i am surprised that they are as accommodating and polite as they are. I see so many questions such as: "Does anyone know where I can get the manual for (insert tractor or attachment model here). I just inherited it from Aunt Millie?" Invariably, the answer is a link to the Manuals section for the specific machine, instead of: "Why don't you scroll down to the documents section on the main page and look it up yourself you dolt!"
-
1 pointI just wanted to know were I could find seals and bearings for a 4 speed.it didn't matter what tractor its in.I know its a 4 speed, and rmaynard gave me the answer I needed.and im going tomarrow to get them.no need to get mad about it.
-
1 pointconsider maybe the ignition coil is defective and only produces spark from one tower on the coil or the rear spark plug is not firing or the spark plug wire to the rear plug is defective
-
1 pointYou are right Bob, wheelhorse66 did not say what tractor the trans was in...him being a member for almost a year and 157 posts...you would think that he would know what information to put in a post so we do not have to guess if he knows the difference between a 3 piece/2piece...3 speed/4 speed transmission. That's the first time I have used that emoticon...kind of feels good...we should not have to guess at what is being posted and asked...put in enough information so we can give you an intelligent answer from the start. This is not about a new guy, but someone who has been around for a year should know better.

1 pointOn a nice lawn mowed often, I find they tend to stay at 90º quite well just using the standard nut and tightness. Another member said "Blue Thread-Lock"was used and he said it was better. Tall thick grass will probably increase the chance of the blades moving, but I don't really think that hinders their performance. The main objective of the Gator Blades is to keep the clippings airborne for double cutting and increase the throw, it's the high-rise on the back of the blades that do this. Alone, the Gator Blades work great. I'm guessing, the dual blade system is a little better. It's the lower original blades that get dull and are doing most of the heavy cutting, the Gator Blades seem to be always sharp. From an older post: Posted 11 May 2013 - 10:00 AM Consider doubling up on the blades, with both sets, regular 'new' blades below the three new Gator blades ( ='s 12 cutting edges ). Adding a baffle on the back of the RD deck will greatly reduce 'blow-up' of the clippings into your tractor. The black on the RD is Slip Plate (black graphite), when I restored the deck, the underside was etched, primed, and painted gloss white, then the 'Slip Plate ($12/qt = 3 coats or 3 years) was brushed on; this greatly reduced the wet grass from sticking to the underside, the exposed white tells me 'wear', where to re-coat for next season. The SD deck had less use, but with no coating gave a lot more build-up. Glen

1 pointI also love the 953. Both of mine are great and they are so far from most other Garden Tractors that they stand out at the shows. Buy It!
-
1 pointWheel horses definitely made it up to VT. With dealers all around the state, but Vermonters hold onto good things for a long time.
-
1 pointMy 953 is one of my favorite tractors I have. I've modified mine a little with a 8 speed 8pinion trans.
-
1 pointIf you have the chance to buy one, I would. I have a 1054 and love the tractor. As far as parts, I have yet to break anything (and I have really beat on the machine) Most 953, 1054, and 1054A parts should he interchangeable. There are a few unique parts between them but I haven't had any issues. Its a great machine if the price is fair. Justin

1 pointIf the old 4-speed has 1" axles, the generic seal is a CR-9815 or SKF-9815 or NAPA NOS-9815. The NAPA price is around $5.00

1 pointUsually it takes 15 min to get everyone lined up. I think it was done quick to avoid a shower in the middle of it! I'm like THE PHANTOM I don't show up in Terry's shot but PING!! there I am in the others! I will change my screen name to THE PHANTOM when my post count gets too high! Dino's have short arms so they can't read a watch if they had one on!
-
1 pointGreat Pics Steve!!! I think we should make you the official WHCC photographer with special privileges like first in parade and special ability to cut in lines for food, ice cream and bathrooms!!! Good job and I enjoyed seeing everyone at the show. GREAT SHOW, GREAT PEOPLE , GREAT TIMES!!! Looking forward to next year!

1 pointWhen I was growing up my grandparents lived on Sage Lake up in Hale, MI. Grandpa had this sweet tractor that I always sat on whenever I had the chance. He let me start driving it at about age 10. It has been through alot. Been flipped over, put in the lake, stuck in the mud....you name it. He passed away in 1999 and my grandmother could no longer care for the lakehouse so the house was sold and my dad took the tractor to his house in about 2006. There it sat until a few weeks ago. My wife and I bought a house with a pretty huge yard and Dad asked if I wanted it. DUH!! Took it home and did some maintenance stuff to see if it would run....no dice. Cleaned the tank, rebuilt the carb, new plug and a coil and she runs like a top! Anyways, glad I found this place. I look forward to learning all I can about my 1965 856. Thanks for letting me ramble.

1 pointIn the not so distant past, I have tried repeatedly to contact TORO regarding wiring errors in the 520 schematics, These errors were found by folks on this forum that traced out wiring issues and confirmed issues with the schematics. On every occasion, my emails were returned with the reply to "send the email to so and so in this department". When you send an email to so and so they once again request YOU send another email to yet another department. I did this about three times before I got the hint. They seemingly don't have any real interest in seeing the errors corrected. Not once did anyone in the TORO organization take the initiative to forward my email internally to the correct people WITHIN THEIR OWN ORGANIZATION.

1 pointI just bought some of the #1502/Nice 412-35 ball bearings for my RJ tranny. Just thought I'd let you guys know that they are available from Kelly Supply Co. as Steve has stated above. The pic below is of the order that I placed for 3 bearings, I found out the next day that you have to buy 10 bearings at a time so with shipping they cost about $6.50 each.
