Here are a few pics from the show. We arrived Thursday morning at 7:15 a.m. We had a blast!!! The highlight of our trip is when won the Lawn Ranger raffle tractor! Already looking forward to next year Arriving on Thursday at 7:15 a.m. in the toy hauler 1st tractor we bought at the show! Carter on his new lawn ranger! The lawn ranger we won from the raffle! So after I got my 310-8. I scanned thru this forum quite a bit, because I needed to split the transmission, but after that, I kept checking up and observing different things. Before being here, I had no idea that a dirt plow could be attached to these tractors, or really, all that much else about them. I really have learned quite a bit from being here. So, after researching, and getting a plow and a disc, and doing some planting, I have a garden that is coming along great! I have a little bit of everything growing in it, and learning things here and there about it. I am just so excited that I was able to go thru and make a garden this year! If I had told myself two years ago that I'd have a garden growing at this time, I wouldn't have believed it! but hey, things interest you, and you get into it! Here is my garden, as of 3 days ago: I have to do some de-weeding tomorrow I think!

I was pulling some metal building steel to the back of my property when I heard the axle bearing protesting. I don't hear that well so I decided to change them. That went real well, but the belt came of the drive pulley while I had the trans/axle out. Removed the belt guard and found the top belt guide bent up at a 45 degree angle. Knocked it back down and cracked it so I took off the bracket and welded it. While I had it apart decided to fix the warped foot boards.They were bent down in the middle and gave ever time I stepped on them. I beat them back straight on an anvil with a rubber tire changing hammer to keep from damaging them. Then spot welded a 3/8" steel rod under the lip. They don't give now when I step on them. Will look a lot better when I get them clean up and and painted. I went ahead and put it back together to try out the new axle bearings.

Well finally tore in to the 414 The head bolts were so loose I could have taken them out with my hands alone. Pulled the plug out, pulled the head off, thought what the heck and took the carb off to clean, cleaned up the valves piston and block, cleaned the head up good, check for flatness and then sanded just a little. Then after cleaning carb, I put it all back with new gasket, head bolts, plug, engine oil, and air filter I fired her up. thought to myself where I can find some tall grass... There is a foreclosure on my block so I headed that way roaring down the block at 10:00 PM. I pulled into the waist high grass kicked on the PTO and went to town grinning from ear to ear. Man its like a whole new machine. I brought her back home retorqued the head bolts and went back to the tall grass. Then something terrible happened.... My wife told me I was keeping the neighbors up and asked me to shut it down.

As previously mentioned the club was unable to finish by the end of the school year. We tried our best but just didn't have enough hours to wrap things up. Instead we are continuing the party in to the summer and have met two times so far. 2 weeks ago I was unable to snap any pictures, but this past week I made sure to grab a few photos of the 5 club members that were able to attend. Here they are in action. They really were able to get after it as much progress was made. While out at the "Big Show" Glen Pettit wanted to brighten up the walls a bit and donated one of his cool new flags. We were able to hang it and display it proudly! I just had to grab another flag to add some more color. Glen does great work! Make sure to support our vendors! Here is a photo of the club tractor. Slowly but surely it is making progress. We are also working on the C-121 that Clyde Potts from Wooster, OH donated to the club. Here is a photo of the two red stallions awaiting to be completed. This year I did not plan on going out to PA but as some of you are aware, the kids won the essay contest in the LAGT magazine. So off I went and retrieved the project for next year. It was an interesting journey as some of you know. A HUGE thank you to Van (Wheel n it)! I am looking forward to showing the kids the new project that will be tackled in August! We were also invited to help kick off our county 4-H fair on July 6th. The tractor will have the hood mounted and then transported to the builder of our club building. From there it will be placed on the flat bed of his old restored International truck. The kids will ride along on the truck through the parade. The truck and tractor will then be placed on display at the county fair for the week. The kids are pretty excited and I will be sure to snap some photos. Stay tuned folks......we aren't done yet!

After thinking about what one car I would buy I came to the conclusion that one car wont do it all. So I think I would roll down to the Chevy dealer, find a hungry salesman and buy a 2014 Vette for around $59,000 and a 2014 Silverado Double cab 4x4 Z-71 for $39,000. Now you have the cool performance 2 seater and a great all season vehicle that would carry 4-5 people and be able to yank a trailer. Just my opinion.... Mike............

#1. You can afford a luxury vehicle, you need to get what you like! You have to live with it and enjoy it. There are pros and cons on all vehicles and there are NO perfect cars out there. I am a auto tech and was asked what is the best car to buy? My answer was " one you do not have to work on" So go with what you like! You got a nice budget, so that means you can afford the proper maintenance on what ever you decide to buy witch is key to making a good vehicle last a long time!

just to let you think - I put a hour meter on my C-161, put it away for the winter with under 200 hrs showing and in the spring it had a dead battery and over 3000 hr. on it. I left the key in the on postion. so neave trust a hr, meter,.

Going to make a post here today, a bunch of us NW Ohio Wheel Horse guys (a.k.a.Tri-State Wheel Horse club are getting together this weekend at the National Threshers Reunion held at the Fulton Cty. fairgrounds in Wauseon, Ohio. The fairgrounds sit right alongside the Ohio turnpike. It looks like we will have some decent weather, so if your bored and have nothing to do come on out and join us. We are set up to the North side of the track. I will get some pictures posted after the show.

I think when you hit a mile stone like this, everyone wants that post to be something special. I really could not come up with anything...so...I thought I would just do what I do best. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ,...NICE HORSE... ... ... ...HI SPARKY...WHAT SQUONK SAYS, MAKES CENTS.... .... It's been a fantastic ride. I have met a lot of the members and made many friends. I've had a lot of fun here and many laughs, and I have been able to contribute from time to time. Thanks to all of you for letting me be a part of what happens here.

My brother David Ralph and I attended our first Wheel Horse Collector's Club Show this year (at the urging of Ray "Doc" Buesking We thank Ray and Carol for being such good neighbors during our stay. I took quite a few photos and we departed the Big Show site at 6:30 AM and arrived in Greencastle, Indiana at 7:00 PM -safe and sound. I will post a few photos of some things I saw the Wheel Horse Collectors Club in 2014. I want to also thank all the Red Square Wheel Horse members I visited with for their great visits during the show.

Check your breather

I went to the show last week hoping to bring home something to play with. Almost did several times and am really sorry I did not go after that nice D200 that was sitting at the show. Came home disgusted with myself. You can bet that next year I will be ready to pull the trigger a lot quicker. Well I am feeling much better today. I got myself a Wheel Horse 417-8. The deck has a hole in it and one crack. Not hard to fix. There is no rust to speak of on any other part of the tractor. It will need a seat. I suspect that it was kept indoors most of it's life. Now the hour meter says 2050 hours. I find that hard to believe because of the condition of the rest of the tractor. The 17hp Kohler is a series 2 and does not smoke and runs strong with no abnormal noise. Guy I got it from picked it up in Pa. and has had it for sale on Craigslist for about a month. All he knows is that he brought it home and put a new battery in it and cleaned the carburetor. My guess is that the engine was rebuilt sometime in the past or the hour meter is from another tractor. He is one of those guys who picks up junk for free. I happily paid the guy. He asked $450.00 and I offered him $350.00 which he accepted and I will pick it up on Tuesday and bring her home. At least my blues are cured for a while.

I think once you are made aware of this peculiarity of this model engine and can take the precautions needed it will give long service. One thing many owners do as a safeguard (me included) is to run the oil level a bit over the shown full mark - I run mine about 1/4" over the mark.

Better yet, how come not 1 with a Wheel Horse?

Bronco 14 is my favorite horse ! I have a 71 I've had for 20 years & a 72 I bought from Eldon 3 years ago I might bring them both & maybe we can get ken in nc to bring his with the 3 point up too !

I Haven't posted much in a while, but glad to say me and my dad got the 854 ready in time for the big show, we had to put the whole tractor together in three nights but we made it, when we got it out to the show I took it for a ride but found out the gas tank leaked so it had to be parked but I'm glad we made it out there in time there are still a few things to fix like the gas tanks and tune in the carb a little better, we got out there an my brother and I took the commando8 and I took the 854, made it there- with out a problem and same back was glad to meet Jake and get his approval on it , now just need to do the plow and mower deck, but that will be a little while.

I have used the PPG Wheel Horse Red and found it to be on the blue side of the spectrum. Then I was introduced to Ford New Tractor Red. That is what I painted the 857 with. It tends to have a very slight orange tint, but not so much that in the direct sunlight it looks orange. I agree with you Craig. I favor a red with the slight orange tint as well.

I personally talked to Cecil Pond about this and he said there is/was no official Wheel Horse red. Back then they bought paint from different manufacturers over the years and did not have the exact match technology they have now. I painted my C-161 8speed with sunrise red and Mr. Pond said that's as close as you'll get ! Some guys like regal red for the older tractors. So I say pick your favorite color red and that is YOUR Wheel Horse red !!!!!

The 1045 was produced in order to use up left over parts between the round hoods and the new "square" hoods. They are a hybrid of the round fender seats and fenders, with the newer '65+ hood design and the wider tires. The 1045 uses a shallow oil pan on the 10 HP Kohler so it will clear the hood. I've heard that even though the hood looks like the newer 65+ hoods, it is unique to the 1045. Also, the front tires are unique to the 1045 and were used on no other Wheel Horse. There were an estimated 1100 built between August and October of 1964, though some appear to have been built in time for the 1964 Indy 500. There are a couple of pictures of 1045's appearing at that year's race. My understanding is that the 1055 has square rear fenders, newer seat design, and the 10 HP Kohler has a regular oil pan I really like my 1045. It is a short frame tractor like my 854, but feels larger with the bigger tires and higher hood. In my opinion, 1045 stands for: 10 = 10 HP, 4 = Special Model, 5 = 1965 year. There is also a rare 1046 model (1966) that has square fenders and the shallow pan 10 HP Kohler. That is why I believe the 4 stands for a special model and not the 1964 model year. Just my $.02...

I've been tied up with a couple other projects but have found some time to play a little. I completed the choke/throttle controls. I made the levers using the one that was on the tractor as a pattern. Installed Glens knobs and Terry's decal with the little modification and I'm happy with it. I don't think that roll pin behind the choke lever is supposed to be there. I can't figure why it was installed. It will pop out easily enough. The levers pivot on 1/4" SS bolts with nylon washers and ny-loc nuts which will let me fine tune them once it's installed. The transmission is all painted up with a couple of little tweaks I wanted to do. I'm waiting on two little items that will arrive next week then I'll post pictures of that. With all the issues I had with that it sure feels good to see a complete, working transmission sitting there.

I bet the hrs. are correct. Mine has roughly 2000 hrs. on the clock as well and the KT17 is still strong as an ox. I gave mine a quick refurb, it was a little more paint worn than yours is... All depending on what you will be doing with it you are better off with the 417 IMO. Nice score you made!

You can check the head yourself. Put it on a thick piece of glass (1/4") as mounted on engine and with a .003 feeler guage, check for "flatness". If you can't get the feeler guage between the head and glass, the head is fine. If not, use a fine grit sandpaper between the head and glass and using a swirling motion, grind until it's flat.

Just got it home! I think I did good. The seller is a great guy too. The serial # is gone. Once I get to that point I'm thinking I'll see if vinylguy can modify the overlay to just say Suburban 400 instead of SER. NO. As I mentioned, I need to find a crankshaft and the tranny gear but I want to get it torn down to confirm what I need. After I flush out the tranny I'll tear everything apart and do a complete restoration. Sheetmetal work is my weak link but this one won't be a problem. The hitch will be replaced with an era correct slot hitch. The cable is there. I'll be able to rebuild the throttle/choke controls I want to find a new steering wheel but this one will do until that happens. There's a lot of little things but I can't type fast enough to list them all and I'm sure you folks will see some I haven't mentioned. I did ask the seller if by some chance he had the guard and shield. No luck. He winters down here and lives in upstate New York in the summer. He was debating taking this back so he'd have more potential buyers but he didn't have the room to haul it. This is going to be so much fun. It won't be 100% original. I'll use a lot of stainless hardware and tweak a few things. Of course I'll post my progress but it will be a long process. My wife is happy for me but said last night "Just don't let the projects around the house come to a halt". Gotta do my best to keep her happy.

Finally getting a chance to update our last meeting which was held Thursday night. It was a huge step in us moving forward as we are now able to use the new building. The building is not hard wired but we are able to run an extension cord temporarily so we have light and can run a portable heater. The kids were excited to finally be back in business. We focused on getting the engine torn down and we will focus on getting it prepped for some new paint. We also tore down another 12 horse that had a broken rod. The kids worked with dad and learned how important it is to do routine maintenance. Here is some photos of the club in the new building and back in action....... Of course a little more of everyone's favorite activity........sanding! Still working with the sandblasted and hoping to have the kids apply the powder to the tractor soon so reassembly can commence. I had the problem with my c125 I was told to unhook the fuel line from the fuel pump then cup your hands around the fuel tank where you fill it and blow into it. If gas comes out the other end of te line There is no clog if everything there is ok then disconnect the fuel line between the carb and fuel pump and turn over. If gas comes out then the fuel pump is good, if the pump is good then it's a carburetor problem... This helped me out on my c125 but I'm not sure if anything is set up the same way on yours if you are able to do these steps you should be able to figure out what is wrong.
