6 pointsHere is some more pics of my custom Army Wheel Horse tractor, Model # 762. Formerly the very first 702 ever made, I added a 6 Speed High/Low tranny, hence the 762. It has alot of custom made parts on it and rare WH parts as well. Some of the features are custom front bumper with attachamatic brackets, 100 year old barn wood push pads, HL5 head lights, dual 953 tail lights, dual rear hitches, 1045 front tires and monster rear tires, NOS 701 dual belt set up and NOS 701 belt guard, Army oil can with leather strap and custom battery hold down bracket that holds the oil can, 2 grenades just in case, widened drive belt guard, new style brake band and pulley set up, step down foot rests and the Army paint and decals. I used a copper fuel line and a few brass nuts and bolts. Custom Fuse Ignitor (NOS WH Cigar Lighter) and head light switch box. A ton of work went into this tractor to make it look original. I forgot how hard it is to restore a garden tractor, especially when we started to assemble all of the parts on the tractor! It is a matter of trial and error for sure. Put a part on and take it back off. If you get parts installed in the wrong order of assembly, you have to take them back off to install some other part! It all came together late in the evening one day before the Sugar Creek Tractor Show. It was received very well at the show and made quite an impression on those who saw it. A very special thanks to my buddy Larry Packrat Eads for all of his help with fabrication and assembly! He knows his stuff for sure! I still have some paint touch up to do on it and some US Army Numbers to put on the sides of the hood. But for the most part it is finally DONE! It took more than 5 years to finish this top secret machine and now the cat, or Horse is out of the bag!

4 pointsDale, with the increase in popularity, somewhat due to this forum, there are certainly those who are in it for the money, it's not the nature of the beast, but it's human nature. We see it all the time here the sum of the parts are greater than the whole. I do however, think that there's mostly helpful individuals, here and elsewhere and I see it all the time. In one post, someone was looking for a cam insert for a Techie, a member had one and offered to send it free of charge. I'm sure that had that not been posted, there would have been 5 PM's selling the same part for $5 - $30. Whether it be Wheel Horse's or collecting Scotch (which by the way still looking to sip some Crown with ya) the "game" is driven by the times, not by how things used to be or we wish they were. You can thank places like eBay and other auctions where driving top dollar for things is part of the atmosphere. It's also why the classifieds here mention to have a price! Granted, that never stops anyone from saying "will you take x?" in a personal message. The internet is impersonal, and as such many people have been desensitized with proper interaction, but this is age old and nothing new. Now, are people in it for the help? I think so.... the most accessed place on the forum is the Wheel Horse section, where people ask questions and get answers. I know you've been frustrated with the way things have gone, and not just selling things, and we do miss seeing you around here. I am truly sorry to see any one feel this way, especially someone who I have a great deal of respect for. Edit: And I will add, the reply to your post enforces that too!

2 pointsWhen I was growing up my grandparents lived on Sage Lake up in Hale, MI. Grandpa had this sweet tractor that I always sat on whenever I had the chance. He let me start driving it at about age 10. It has been through alot. Been flipped over, put in the lake, stuck in the mud....you name it. He passed away in 1999 and my grandmother could no longer care for the lakehouse so the house was sold and my dad took the tractor to his house in about 2006. There it sat until a few weeks ago. My wife and I bought a house with a pretty huge yard and Dad asked if I wanted it. DUH!! Took it home and did some maintenance stuff to see if it would run....no dice. Cleaned the tank, rebuilt the carb, new plug and a coil and she runs like a top! Anyways, glad I found this place. I look forward to learning all I can about my 1965 856. Thanks for letting me ramble.

2 pointsNeeds a little TLC... I was left out for 4 years with no cover over the exhaust... OUCH... Pulling the head off this week to see the extent of the damage. 82' B8200 with Ford model 951 Bush hog, scraper, and box blade.

2 pointsI drug home 2 tractors 2 weeks ago and got a great deal on them both! The first one is a nice Toro WH 312-8 Speed Classic, it ran and mowed last year but the guy didn't want to mess with it no more. He bought a MTD instead! It turns over and has a nice mower deck but came with the wrong seat. He was wanting $100 for it but I offered him $75.00 for it since he claimed it was in rough condition. He thought about it for a few seconds and said yes but hurry up and load it up before he changed his mind. I said I had been watching American Pickers all day and learned a trick or 2 from them guys! We got a laugh out of that and we loaded it up right away and I paid him fast! He said his buddy had an old Jacobsen for sale for $50.00 and it ran and everything. We went and looked at it and the guy started it up and the 12 hp Kohler ran good but had a blown out muffler and no drive belt. It had some parts missing on it but for $50.00 I bought it right then since it ran good. It is a Hydrostat drive too! The front tires are huge but I didn't care and we loaded it up too. Not bad for a Saturday morning haul! Now if I can get in the driveway without the wifey seeing them, it will be an even better day! Hammerhead

1 pointIt is great to attend the Wheel Horse Collectors Club and see all the RedSquare hats and buttons. While most of you know this, I want to be sure that everyone is aware. The Wheel Horse Collectors Club is NOT RedSquare. While we have a large attendance at the show, we could be so lucky to host an event like this. The Wheel Horse Collectors Club pre-dates RedSquare and is solely responsible for the annual gathering which we all enjoy either in person or by seeing the pictures. Please remember that The Wheel Horse Collectors Club needs your support as well. Visit their FaceBook page for information on becoming a member. Their fee is only $10 per year which is such a small amount to insure their continued efforts at providing a quality show. So please remember, both and The Wheel Horse Collectors Club need your support to keep this hobby going and if you enjoy the show, please support the sponsor The Wheel Horse Collectors Club. If you would like to support RedSquare you can do so by visiting our store and selecting the supporter package which is right for you. Both RedSquare and the Wheel Horse Collectors Club are dedicated to the continued preservation of the legacy which Cecil Pond worked so hard to build. edit: The Wheel Horse Collectors Club has had a number of website changes, I think the best place to contact them is their FaceBook page

1 pointI was arguing (discussing) the benefits of synthetic oil, as I know from experience with my own devices, with a friend of mine. I am a strict user of synthetics and use them in every application, except 2 strokes. my friend is a " any quality oil is good enough for anything". he would not believe the evidence I saw with my own eyes and was willing to put his money where his mouth was( when I suggested it). the horse was the tool, and a field of grass (hay field, with very good grass) nearly a foot high and wet was the test. the grass was tough enough that the 312-8 needed low range, 2nd gear to do it !!! we divided the grass into 3 equal sections, drained the 5w50 mobil 1 that I run and poured in the 30w (brand name). I used a fluke with a thermocouple and the temp measurements were taken by shutting off the engine, pulling the dipstick and measuring the oil temp( all temps are oil).the engine was restarted and allowed to cool a bit with a fast idle for a few minutes, then oil drained and changed. the 3rd test was wrapping(rewrapping) the muffler with header wrap. this I have been using on the horse for a year or so and is worth every penny !!! my friend paid up, and vowed to switch.. the wrap may be hard to believe, but the fact is that everyone knows how much heat the muffler pours off when working the motor hard. I guess the radient heat pouring off just bakes the block more efficiently than the air cooling can remove it. the fluke was not calibrated so the numbers are relative to each other only, but accurate in their spread. anyway, take it for what its worth. but numbers don't lie, and the cooler ride when driving into a headwind are something you have to do to know how much better it is.

1 pointI haven't had my thermal dynamics books out since the late 70's when I worked at the Corning Glass Works. I used to know a bit about the subject but Heat Capacity and Specific heat are two different terms but define similar properties of materials. I don't argue synthetics do lower friction, but the overall lowering of the "system" temperature the oil is used in (the Kohler K engine) has to do with many variables in the oil. The ability of the synthetic oil to absorb more heat from the system (mostly thru contact with the aluminum piston that has a much higher thermal conductivity than the cast iron cylinder walls) is greater than conventional oils. The ability of the synth oil to TRANSFER the heat to the cast iron oil pan is also greater than the conventional oils. I also believe the contact between the synth molecules is better with the cast iron due to smaller and more consistent size of the synth oil molecules - i think that's the right term ??? Imagine transferring heat thru two large aluminum spheres that only have a little contact surface between them versus hundreds of smaller aluminum spheres occupying the same area. The contact between the smaller spheres is greater and more heat is transferred thru the material. The MPG increase in the Ranger is substantial. Replacing a defective thermal clutch on a pulley mounted fan with electric fans can by itself make a substantial increase to MPG. The wrapping of the headers lowering the under hood temp - a no brainer as you limit the exhaust heat lost in the headers and force the heat under the floor boards and into the under car portion of the exhaust system. Underhood temps will undoubtedly go down. As far a wrapping the whole exhaust system, I believe most car manufacturers address this issue by using stainless steel in the exhaust system. Stainless has a much lower heat transfer ability than carbon steel and will not allow the heat in the exhaust system to be dissipated as rapidly under the vehicle. The biggest gain in MPG I have seen in my vehicles comes when I am conscious about my driving habits. Driving at speeds closer to the speed limit, limiting unnecessary fast acceleration. keeping tire pressure correct and consolidating trips into one all lead to greater increases in my "miles per tankful" than any other addition to vehicle.

1 pointwell, thats why i called it a gamble. i got time to figure it out. thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

1 pointalright, that makes more sense. (I was looking at the wrong listing.......) i actually found another listing the same as that, but searched for yours in completed listings and for some reason, that one didn't come up. I would search N52M and read all you can about them, it will help in your parts search to complete the engine. of course your cheapest way is to buy a complete junk or used engine for all the parts. almost nothing will interchange from the performer engines......

1 pointnot even close to being true example - leave everything in the engine the same, install an external oil cooler - much lower oil temp and friction stays the same. familiarize yourself with the property called specific heat. it explains 80% of the lower temps w/ synth oils.

1 pointwell guys, i got that part, total was 71 dollars... so i put it on, took her for a rip snot, came back and had to re align the steering piece that the tie rods connect to...got that fixed and now its set! just put the blower on... what an easy job that is!!! want to put the deck on but it sits to low for my garage because of the lip piece the doors sit against.... so i had to put 2 pieces of wood under each front tire to lift it high enough for it to go in,,,, it still rubbed but man.... let me tell u! what a solid find!!! thank you all for the help!

1 pointyou can remove the piston and rings to clean them just hone the cylinder before you reassemble it Brian

1 pointWell I put the tin back on the old girl today and finished rewiring the switch harness and lo and behold it fired up. Blew a little blue smoke for about a minute and that cleared up nicely. It sound great and I am a very happy camper. After I eat supper I am going to put the seat pan and hood on it and cut some grass. Then I think I will have a beer.

1 pointI will be the first to admit that I almost always ask "will you take $x". I am just starting a family, have been married for just under 2 years, have a 1 year old and another on the way. I really enjoy my tractors, but I try to get the best possible deal I can. Otherwise I would not have tractors. I am both a 'low-baller' and a nice guy. There is no actual set value to any of these things, its just a number that people usually pull out of their rear end and around me they are usually WAY over priced. I am always willing to respect if someone is not interested in my offer, and if they respond I will either politely decline or come to a price that we can both agree on.

1 pointHey Gulftane, You should probably start your own D200 restoration topic. You are just in the thick of it and digger (the owner of this post) is at a different point. It will help us follow along yours better! Its hard to follow two different restorations in one thread. Looking forward to it!

1 pointWonderful day in the garden. Mighty 520H, 12 inch Brinley, Matt's foot control kit and this: Foot control is very nice as you can limit the wheel spinning as the ground changes.

1 pointwill combustion chamber deposits increase at lower engine temperatures ? will fuel efficiency drop off at lower engine operating temperatures ? Carnot thermal efficiency concerns? if the purpose of the experiment is to lower oil temperatures then yes, synthetics do indeed transfer heat better - usually about 6 - 8% better and that agrees with your findings. if the lowest temperatures possible are the holy grail, why not run automotive engines without a thermostat in summer months? Discuss.

1 pointusually the parking brake switch wiring is simple - parking brake mechanics are locked and engage the sensor switch -the switch contacts close and send 12 volts to the yellow wire on the indicator pcb 12 volts on the yellow wire signals the indicator pcb to light the parking brake light so 1) your switch is defective and always closed or 2) yellow wire to the indicator pcb is mis-wired to 12 volts somehow 3) pcb is defective or covered in conductive grass / water / grease mixture - falsely triggering the indicator board. check for 12 volts at the indicator pcb yellow wire - it should not be there when the parking brake is release - if it is, remove the wire connector from the parking switch and see if the indicator goes out

1 pointFirst do not take it to a lawnmower shop. They're very conscious of using set prices to fix things. These engines are not that complicated. If you absolutely do not want to try it yourself, take it to small shop that rebuilds engines. I needed to have a Kohler re-bored and the crank turned. Took him the engine and he did the job as well as the valves for about 120 labor. I supplied the valves, piston, and gaskets. You pull the engine he does the work and you reinstall it. Search YOUTube for Videos on the engine. If it was in good condition, it still is. You don't have to tear the whole engine to make that repair. Fix what is broke if you can't afford to rebuild it now.

1 pointOne of these at Portland, IN show today for $1600. No one around to ask about it. Took pix, but mine are too big to load here most times. Can try it? Yep, won't fit sorry!

1 pointThe nice Red Shiny ones get waxed often and are used for work. The ones that you can't wax because of in need of paint don't get waxed but they get the same care and constant cleaning as the garage queens do. After being worked they get washed. They may not shine but they are every bit loud and proud as they sit next to the shiny ones in the barn. As a side note, wife just shakes her head and is ready to have the men in the little white coats come get me. Says she can't get the car washed but I find time to wash a rusty old garden tractor. I am just not seeing it what's the problem here.

1 pointTractor 7478 is for hydro transmission 7473 is for 8-speed 106496 is for twin cylinder auto models 106497 is a typo for 106496 @ Toro Mower Spindle belt for 95-42MR01 deck is 106125 Drive belt for 95-42MR01 deck is 108834 (98") in belt chart and likely a mistake so may be WRONG Drive belt 102741 (96.6") is listed for 95-42MR02 in the original parts list Mower belt chart Tractor belt chart Garry

1 pointHello Nick, A belated welcome to RS. Not totally familiar with your Model, but suspect the Belt size differences may be for engine variation ( pulley size). The 7473 Belt is 81.95 inches in length measured around the outer circumference. The 7478 Belt is 84.22 inches .. ... .... .. .. . ... . .. . I suspect you have a Single Cylinder Engine and a Manual Transmission , you will require the 7473 Belt, but at least you can check by measuring now. As for where to obtain one, I only use genuine Wheel Horse Belts from a Toro parts dealer, so can only offer an alternative source without endorsement. I have used an online source for other machinery and have been more than happy with the quality and would consider using on my Tractors if required, so you may wish to check out this company - http://www.beltingonline.com (click on Vee and Wedge Belts in the left hand list) They list by Manufacturers part numbers, Manufacturer, dimensions etc and they are based in Hampshire. Lastly, as you have located all your applicable Manuals and gone to great lengths already to locate the information, there is another of enormous help, it can be found in the Manuals section- Hope this helps and if you need any further assistance, don't hesitate to ask. Let us know how you get on. Regards.

1 pointWelcome to the club and to find the bolt pattern take a tape measure in between the bolt holes and as far as yellow he mean don't by a John Deere seat to put on there that would be like painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa.

1 pointI'll be bouncing around on all the little details for this resto. I'm still waiting on the diff. bushings and once I get those I'll have the tranny back together and the frame/tranny all painted up nice. I'm going to running out of days to paint so I know I won't get the sheetmetal final painted until less humid days return. Have I mentioned that I hate Florida summers? I did get the decals I ordered from Terry today. What an incredible job!! Thanks Terry!! I have plans for the extras I ordered but that's down the road a ways. Take a look at the dash decal. Since my serial# was long gone I asked him to do this little modification. I likes lots! I've got the channel bracket and cover plate all painted up in steel. The original face of the cover was pretty pitted and then there was what was left of the factory stampings. I simply used the backside and it's as smooth as a baby's behind. I'll be making new levers and getting it rebuilt. That's just one of the many things that needs to be done as I wait for better painting weather.

1 pointOh yeah, I wax and polish compound mine too. In between that I use car detail "Spray and Wipe" then "ArmorAll" the tires. But I'm not the least bit OCD about my Wheel Horses. No not me

1 pointI won't compare the WHCC and RedSquare, and I support both. I don't know who made the comments to Vin, but comments like that are usually based out of fear, but fear of what I don't know. RedSquare fully supports the efforts of the WHCC and the annual show. Our members are Wheel Horse enthusiasts FIRST, with RedSquare acting as a medium to share and exchange information. We advertise, support, and encourage attendance at the collectors club show, and I have to believe that through these efforts, attendance at the event has increased NOT decreased. The posting of pictures (enabled for guests to see as well) and open discussion of the events, who is there, the fun being had etc reaches thousands of people around the world, not just RedSquare members. The purpose of this post was to show support for the Wheel Horse Collectors Club and the show that they provide, not to divide the Wheel Horse community. There are people out there, Wheel Horse collectors, who are upset that the hobby has grown as it has, and for them RedSquare is not the place. My question to the people making the comments is simple.... What are you doing to promote the hobby? The WHCC website is an informational site and not intended to be a forum (or at least as far as I am aware). I have no knowledge of the inner workings of the club, except to say they put on a great show which I hope every RedSquare member attends while wearing their RedSquare hat! Oh... fyi, the WHCC does not have an on-line membership application, there is a link to a form which you need to print out and supply your name, address, phone number and of course a check for $10. I encourage everyone to support the club!
