Fastenal stores can ship a Garden Tractor for you, from one store to another Fastenal store. If you ever need to ship one, well worth checking into, they make the process quite easy, very helpful, taking care of all the logistics & paperwork for you, and I think the rates are very fair (you must secure the tractor to the pallet): http://www.fastenal.com/web/en/22/third-party-logistics-(3pl

Lots of good info, As stated the Starter Pulley Thingy in itself is the flywheel nut and it screws off. after removing I then removed the hood. I put the pulley back on and turned the engine over by hand and heard a ticking sound about every revolution. I thought I should spray some AMSOIL fogging oil in the cylinder to lube the rings and cylinder wall so tried to take the spark plug out to no avail. So I took the head off, and it had a lot of carbon so I brushed and cleaned the head and top of piston and valves. I could only turn the spark plug an 1/8th turn and it was very tight. So I heated up the head around the spark plug hole and then turned the head so inside of head was face up and sprayed the sea foam in there in hopes it would draw the oil in around the threads and loosen things up and I left it overnight. Well it worked cause this morning I put the head in the vise and turned the Plug out it was hard but it did come out. The threads are a little galled so I ran a wire tubing brush through the threads and lubed real good. I also wire wheeled the spark plug and then chased the threads with plug and if tightens right up. On that ticking sound I called my pal SHORTS and asked him about that he said it was probably the External Ignition Impulse Thingy. Well sure enough the engine does have the external Wico Ignition and yep that were it. (Thanks Paul) I looked this up on the internet and found this.. http://www.smokstak.com/forum/showthread.php?t=98291 I have since started putting back on the head and will try and start the ole girl and see if she perks. Ill give my report later. ~Duke

Took this one today. Loaded up my Dad's 552 and my 550 in the truck and brought them over to my Gramps to play with his Raider 10. Great day in the yard. Tons of smiles. My Gramps is 88, I haven't seen him climb into the seat in ages.. very cool watching him cruise around the yard with a big smile on his face. Great day!

Traded some parts for this basket case. Trans is locked up and hubs are stuck, but I think it'll turn out OK. The PO visits the forum sometimes, so he knows about us. And the kicker, a Clinton panther two stroke. Don't know what I'll do with it.

Pinned to the top of the forum in which you posted this question, is this thread: You will find many suggestions for the color "Wheel Horse Red". However, since there are no color police out there to site you for using the wrong color, use whatever pleases you.

I have pulled small stumps and logs with the B-100. Sometimes it's a fun ride with the front axle coming off the ground, but 3rd gear seems to work best for me. Maybe I'm lucky, and I haven't broken anything yet (me or the tractor). I always have chains on the turfs, and an escape plan if things don't go well. Years ago we were taking down trees and I had a rope tied about 40 feet up, with the other end hooked to the hitch. I thought I had enough rope to put me in the "safety zone", but I pulled the rope tight and kept pulling while the tree was coming down. The tree didn't go exactly where we had predicted, and I still have the dent in the fender pan to remind me that that was not a good thing to do. I believe there were a few "skid marks" elsewhere as well as I jumped from the seat while moving to exit stage left.

My horizons are expanded all the way. I have 0 knowledge of college football or who's in what conference. All I know is Miami produces a lot of thugs, Oregon has weird uni's, and Mich state has a cool mascot. What do I win if I finish at the bottom of both. You won't win anything, but you are officially no longer in the basement by win count. You passed someone else's win count and stepped right out of the basement. So no coffee, doughnuts, or card games for you! (you can keep the flashlights)

My name is Dave. I, too, am a horseholic... I admit it and I like it. For the past 2-1/2 years, I also have spent a lot of time every day on CL and Ebeigh waiting for another WH tractor or part that I just can't pass on the opportunity to own. I don't smoke. I don't drink. I don't do drugs. My house and truck are paid for and I am now at a point in my life where I have a few extra bucks to spend on my new hobby... restoring classic, vintage WH garden tractors. If my wife is looking for me, chances are pretty good she will find me in the garage tinkering with one of my horses. Those of us who enjoy this fantastic hobby are so thankful for this RedSquare forum. It truly is one of the greatest sources of information available anywhere about anything you need to know about Wheel Horse lagt's. Just check out how many visitors/members visit this forum each and every day. The hobby is alive and well. Kevin, we're all in this together. We're pulling for you.

Got the Safety switches on today along with the clutch spring, NOS on ebay for 5 bucks, and the seat. I picked a seat up on ebay for 20. Not a WH seat but looks alot like one. Had to pull the cover and reconfigure the mounting holes but I think it looks OK. Got started on the Hood today but that is going to take awhile. What a beautiful Fall day here in Pa. for working in the Garage.

Separate thread for bowl games...it is. I like that, just thought I would ask. It will not be all the bowl games, same as last year...start with the first Big Ten team in a bowl and all the rest from there. I will start the thread when the pairings come out. I already know that Iowa will be in the Toilet Bowl...and somebody will wipe their butt...GO ILLINOIS

You would get so wheelhorse high @ the big show it would take you days to come back down....

I definitely like the separate thread for the bowl picks. Like RMC said, we might get more players in a new thread. Not everyone is a Big 10 fan. There's the SEC and many other conferences in play in the bowl games. It makes it interesting to expand your horizons and pick from teams you know even less about than the B1G teams.

We've been heating our house with wood and coal for the past 5 or 6 years now. When natural gas threatened to go sky high, that put me over the edge and I put the stove in. It's much warmer now than when we were using the gas furnace, and my gas bill is only about 50 bucks a month now! I gather all the free wood I can get - year 'round, and we buy two tons of coal (anthracite) every other year. You'll love it. You gotta work for it though - that's the only thing - there's no free lunch. We've saved a lot on gas bills over the years. The stove has paid for itself by now.

This hobby can also help you get work done. That's the angle I use with my "sober" wife. As long as I use one of the horsies occasionally, I'm justified in my addiction.

Well I think it would be a shame to restore that tractor. People at tractor shows flock to the old original condition machines. The more I look at your tractor, the more I think it should be left dirty and in as found condition. I see a lot of original condition WH's that people tear into and restore them right away, rather than just backing off and letting it be. You do lose a lot of patina when you clean up such a time capsule. To me, it takes away the history of the tractor. Like Stevebo said, if you clean up the hood, you may take some color off the decals and that would suck since they are so original. I would try to get it running though and I would fix the rims or replace them if they are fried. A descent welder guy could probably fix them without charging you as much as a new set. I'd even keep them old raggedy rear tires for history's sake, just throw them in the barn, there ain't none around! But it is your machine so do what you like to it, we are all behind you on this one. Good luck with it, she is a beautiful old lady! KJ

Thanks Guys, Yep she is defiantly a different beast. well I'm gonna show some closer Pics of the tractors condition. It looks like someone down the road did a lil painting on the hood. Also the hood has 3 holes drilled in the top of Hood, The tires are dusted and the rims look mucked up and I'm not sure they can be saved. Can A Guy get these rear rims? The tractor is filthy with grease and I would think the whole thing should be cleaned wherever Grease or oil is seeping should I replace seals and gaskets? I am also thinking of cleaning up the brakes (Should I Install New?) My Muff is awful RUFF So I need to find one of them. Any leads on Parts? Rims, Brakes Prolly can get bearings and seals and so forth from Motion Industries. How far would you guys go on this? Thanks ~Duke

this past weekend was our first "work weekend" for ourt new cub. holy moly did she work well. i'm at a loss for words. it was pure joy working her this weekend. what a ride, like a cadillac. both the farmall and the wheel horse got work and both were flawless. the farmall can't mow like a wheel horse thats for sure, but oh boy was the farmall smooth. my wife (who is legally blind and can't drive a car) was all over it. it was the fisrt thing she ever drove when she was a kid. and our 4 year old son, gavin, sure enjoyed riding around with mom.

It is definitely fixable. I just love trying to guess what is wrong with transmissions in a thread like this...really. My guess is the differential...either a pinion, or an axle gear on the axle, or both. All it takes to get what you have is a small piece of something stuck in the bottom of a pinion or an axle gear. It will stop the transmission in that spot when those 2 gears mesh, and it will roll until that spot hits again, in the other direction. You do not want to force it...it could be a piece of rust, but it could be a chipped tooth. You will have to split the transmission to fix it. The cost to fix depends on what is wrong...if just rust, the cost of a gasket ($6)...if chipped teeth, racinfool40 (Mike) has good used gears for sale for a great price....if you have to replace a bearing and seals, the cost goes up. At the worst of what you find, you should be under $100, but you would have a transmission that will last another 40 years...if taken care of. BTW...Welcome to Red Square!! WE have plenty of pictures and some videos of tearing down a trans and putting it back together. It is an easy job with these tutorials. All the bearings and seals and gears are available, and we will help you and walk you through the process. Is the horse worth it??? Hard to say with out some pictures (we love pictures), but for $200 or if you can get it for less (because of the trans) and the engine is in good shape...it could be well worth it. Let us know what you think.

Just something to start a discussion. My Ultimate Tractor, and I am seeking 1, is a Steiger Panther IV, 360hp. While the practicality, of it's use, is limited to heavy agriculture use. It also can be used for residential. Just fit it with a 10' plow and you have a great looking, eye popping, jaw dropping winter Green Machine. The Steiger paved the way for the articulated tractor. While there were others before this model. The Steiger demonstrated cost savings, high HP, and versatility for the user. I choose the IV model, only because, I spent a better part of 2 years in the cab of 1. At first, I hated it. The A-B-C-D range was difficult to select when stopped. You had to shake, rattle and roll the levers into place. The 5 spd. trans. was difficult to select higher gears when on the road. < Man it was a pain to get into road range. D-5, was almost impossible to reach while shifting on-the-fly. Starting out in this gear was impossible. But as I grew to understand the unique characteristics of the tractor. I really began to enjoy spending time in the cab. Pulling a 12 bottom plow, or a 15 shank chisel plow was nothing for this brute monster. The "decelerator" pedal was truly an outstanding feature. The ability to swivel the seat, to the right, so you could see the implement better you were pulling was a thing of beauty then. No other articulated tractor, at that time, had the HP, versatility, or economical price tag/for the amount of HP you got. Basically, you could not buy a better tractor that was easy to keep up, high HP and did not break your bank when you took out the loan. Sooooo. The Steiger is my ultimate tractor...... What is yours???
