Well, I've been out of town for a few days, and just got back last night, so I hadn't got much done on it. However, when I got back I had a couple things that had come in the mail. I got a care package from Glen Pettit, including a repro throttle knob, and a few other items. Glen does great work!! I also got some 23x10.50-12 AG's, and some tri-ribs. The clutch pedal came in as well, so now it drives. Here are a few pics. Matt

i got so worked up about steve painting that blade of his, i just knew i needed to redo the blade on this one now before winter. nothing better than red paint shining while pushing some snow. so i took it into work yesterday and blasted/powdercoated it. put it together this morning with mostly new hardware and mounted it on the 416. did a bit of driving around and then decided i needed to paint the black on the grill as its looking a little shabby..... looks like its going to need decals and a seat now.......

And stop searching CL so much focus on what you have instead of what you could have that's really helped me stop spending the money

This will be my first tractor project. Don't get too excited, I have a few other projects going on so this will probably string out over the next decade or so. I love older mechanical stuff. I like finding and rebuilding old motorcycles. I'm only a purist on pre WW2 stuff, so this probably won't be a stock resto. I love the ag tires I have seen on your tractors, so I will eventually get some of those. Other than that, this will be just a basic clean up and paint. I'm still working on a couple bikes right now that I have not yet finished. This one is my current project bike:

After experiencing the pleasure of swapping out attachments a few times I found it would be more efficient (for me) to just buy one tractor for each attachment and leave it on all the time. It wasn't worth my time and back strain to regularly swap attachments. Plus, as I was acquiring various attachments, they tended to come with worker tractors.

603 Special, 500 Special, A-90 Special. 800 Special. Ain't that special! The 603 was special because WH used their remaining stock of older WH parts from their inventory shelves. So they sold that Model for a cheaper price, basically a parts shelf clearing economy tractor. It also incorporated the new for 1964 styled parts. You can have a 603 with a lot of different parts on it from one 603 to the next. A 500 Special is special because it was associated with the Indianapolis 500 Race. The A-90 Special was special because it had the older parts from their inventory shelves like the 603 had. WH did that every few years to use up old parts in their inventory. My A-90 Special is a 1974 WH and it has the 1965 through 1969 style of square hood. It also has an older style of Briggs engine on it and some other parts as well. My 800 Special is a hydrastat drive and I don't know what makes it special as I quit using it a few years ago. So that is all I know about Special Models! LOL!

I don 't own one, nor do I have a picture of one, but I do know of a model named the 420 LSE (Limited Special Edition) that I think was only made for one year.

If I still had my Built 69 SS Big Block Chevelle (with all the hidden goodies and setup proper.) I'd take that bet. Sold it a few years ago so you won't be seein my tail lights anytime soon... I know there are some wicked fast new cars, I owned a Shelby and a Subaru WRX Turbo and it is true, many of these new cars will lay a spankin on the cars of yesteryear. As an old school guy there ain't nothing cooler than an old car from the 60's that is setup proper showin a new car whats up, and from time to time it does happen. I know its an old thread and my comment is totally non related to tractors but I couldn't resist!

Some of those old type garages still exist here in UK , but sadly they are slowly dying out , only the other day i went into a garage to get some fuel and an old guy climbed out from under a car , wiping his hands on an old rag , wearing a pair of oily overalls , He was smartly dressed under his overalls with a shirt & tie and well polished shoes , He then went on to write me a written receipt and then put my money in an old metal tin and then put it under the counter.and then crawled back undereath the car that he aws working on. It brought a smile to my face when i looked into his workshop and noticed all the old tools that he was using with old stickers all over his tool box. It brought back some wonderful memories of my childhood

I put a set of duals on my RJ58 project tractor. Also jacked it down in the front with a set of smaller bar lugs. It's got the original 4 hp Kohler on it. I took the small butt type of seat off it for my 1956 RJ35 and the gas tank got sniped off it too. I replaced the seat with the correct type but now I need a gas tank for it. I will have to sand blast and paint this seat and the front rims. Click on the pics for a larger image. Stick it back in the shed until next time....KJ

Thanks everyone for the help. I put some oil in and so far nothing's changed. It acts like whatever the triggers connected to is not connected anymore. Try and tear it down tomorrow.

I agree with slammer. Focus on what you have. Start and finish each project. One at a time if possible. I refurbished a 36" SD mower deck. It took 4-5 months because I hired out the bead blasting and paint work. I probably saved money, because I didn't buy any tractors! I'm working on refinishing a rear attachment bracket. That's a small project! Just a few examples.

Trigger valve "O" rings are probably dry or have some build up, 3in1 or Marvel Mystery may do the trick. Good luck.

I just finished a C160 project where I took all the hydro out of one and put it in place of an 8 speed then put the 8 speed stuff back in the hydro. Still had two running C160s but the one I wanted to keep is now a hydro with hydro lift. My brother now has an 8 speed manual lift C160, and I have my tractor the way I wanted it with the hydro setup. with two tractors sitting side by side it is time consuming but not hard, there are a lot of things different on the two. The shifter box and steering tower combo was a shocker to me the hydro tractor part is an inch taller than the 8 speed. Engine pulley is different, seat pan mount has to be inverted, rear fender pan mount has to be changed, clutch needed to be changed one was electric the other manual, alot of the tractor had to be changed. In the end it was worth it to me because I wanted my tractor with the hydro stuff and my brother loves the gears. I also went from fixed seat pan to the hydro being a flip pan, so I had to convert that all back. I wanted my fixed seat pan also, It was a lot of unbolting and swapping over but they both run and cut and I have the pretty tractor out of the two. I also had to changer running boards for the hydro lift cylinder.

Texas is beginning to look not so far away after all.

This is my new toy,as I said in a previous post I sold my GT14,so I had to get another tractor.I really like this 417-A,the ground speed is surprising.I pushed a little rock with it and there's plenty of power.I got my chains in the mail and am ready. Well once upon a time when you bought a farm tractor and you went down to the library or Ag Extension Office to look up reviews of farm machinery there were several more ratings then just HP of the engine. You had Draw-bar HP(how hard it could pull) Belt HP(later PTO HP) and the HP of the engine. So depending on your need you bought for the HP you needed, for instance your big plow tractor probobly wouldn't work very wheel or efficiently to run the thresher. Another industry that rates machines on pulling power are Railroads. Steam engines were almost never rated in Horse Power they were rated in Tractive Effort or the amount of force the engine would exert on the pulling faces of the coupler. This measurement is still used on Diesel Electric Locomotives. And in recent years traction control advancements have dramatically changed these numbers. While the HP of the Diesel Prime Movers has stayed constant at about 4,200 HP the tractive effort has almost doubled in the last 20 years. Basically the electrical transmission systems used in these engines has changed, where D.C. traction motors were the norm 20 years ago now A.C. traction motors have taken over. With modern electronics the power systems have becoming much more efficient producing more power at the wheel to move heavier trains with less units. Even the Locomotives are built for different purposes. GE produces both passenger and freight units that look almost identical on paper and in person. The HP is the same the electrical wizardry inside is the same the traction motors are the same but the gearing between the motors and the gears are different. Maximum speed for a freight engine is usually 79 MPH but typically does not get much over 45 MPH so they will drag a heavy coal train up a mountain at 10 MPH all day with no problem. However a passenger locomotive of the same HP will have a maximum speed of say 120 MPH but typically will not operate over 79 MPH. It won't drag the coal train at 10 MPH over the hill but once you got it moving on level track it would drag it to 79MPH no problem and keep it there all day. Wait a minute where was I going with this again???

This is my fleet for winter I just switched the blade for a sweepster model c 48 rotary broom. I can't wait to try it in the snow.
